third-degree sex offense in 2005 and was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison. he also is listed on maryland's sex offender registry. we talked to one man whose wife and son were tied up in a home invasion. he says he's relieved ray is off the streets. >> i'm glad that they're arrested now and cannot bother my family or other families. >> we know that residents in those specific communities as well as residents throughout the county were certainly concerned at his brazenness and his boldness. so, we're very excited tonight to let the public know that he's in custody. >> ray is facing charges in three home invasion robberies and two sex assaults in montgomery and prince george's counties. he's currently in custody in dare county, north carolina, pending an extradition hearing. police are looking for two men who pretended to be cops and robbed a man. investigators say the imposters had a flashing light on the dashboard of their car and pulled over the victim in southeast early yesterday
9:01 am
morning. both had handguns and jackets that read "police" on them. detectives say the pair ordered the driver out of his car, made him put his hands on the hood, and then went through his pockets and stole cash. investigators have not released a description of the two men that they're looking for at this time. well, prince george's county police have identified a body wrapped in plastic in capitol heights as 31-year-old perry earl hunt. investigators say that a maintenance worker found him behind an apartment complex dumpster on doewood lane early friday morning. detectives are trying to figure out who killed him and why. if you know anything about this case, call prince george's county police. new this morning, rescuers found a third person alive on a cruise liner that capsized near italy. it comes as authorities investigate the captain for possible misconduct. the "costa concordia" hit a reef off the tuscan coast friday night. three people died. nearly 40 others are still
9:02 am
missing. rescuers found a south korean couple alive on the ship yesterday. they had taken the cruise for their honeymoon. just moments ago, the bbc reported rescuers pulled a crew member off the ship who had a broken leg. meanwhile, others who survived say the capsizing seemed straight out of the movie "titanic." >> then we had a blackout and everybody were just screaming. all the passengers were running up and down. and then we went up to our cabins to get to know what's going on. >> at the very end, before we jumped off, one of the crew members was actually telling us we need to stay on. >> according to italian state tv, the captain could face manslaughter charges. authorities say he possibly deliberately steered the ship to shallow waters, then abandoned the cruise line erliner, leavin people on board. that story, we were talking off camera, it's just getting weirder and weirder and weirder. >> why would you steer a cruise
9:03 am
ship with 4,000 people into shallow water? that's odd. >> and everybody that's taken a cruise, that's the biggest night mare. >> oh, yeah, absolutely. at least they were lucky enough to know they were close to shore. there were other ships -- >> a lot of people swam to their safety. >> a lot of fellow mariners helping out there. for us, oh, man, is it cold outside this morning. >> bundle up. >> i know. wintertime. it took a while getting here, but it's finally settled in, at least for one whole weekend. the cold weather isn't going to last too much longer. today's probably going to be the worst of it. tomorrow, the improvement begins, although there's a little chance of some wintry weather around here early on tuesday morning before everything becomes all rainfall. we're keeping a close eye on your monday night into tuesday morning time frame. but for now, all is quiet, skies are clear and temperatures are generally below freezing this morning. 29 in downtown washington, 28 degrees in montgomery county, in southern montgomery county, 25, though, in gaithersburg. 27 degrees in ashburn this morning, 25 degrees as you get
9:04 am
up into the panhandle of west virginia. here's your "day planner." temperatures will be inching their way towards the freezing mark by about 10:00. even with full sunshine today. i think that we're going to stay with highs generally in the mid-30s. sun goes down at 10 minutes after 5:00 today. we've added almost 30 minutes of daylight at the end of the day. >> hey, i like that. >> that is good stuff right there. >> i love it! >> that means spring can't be that far away. >> good, good, good. i'm already getting all the spring catalogues for clothing and children's clothing, so. >> christmas is over. now it's time for easter and all the other stuff. >> they move fast. thank you. >> you're welcome. new this morning, a d.c. nightclub will reopen its doors after having its liquor license suspended indefinitely. the moon lounge shut down last month after two men were stabbed outside the club. mood lounge reached an agreement with the office of the attorney general to reopen under certain conditions, like setting up security cameras. the district's alcoholic beverage control board signed off on the measure this weekend. there's no word on when the club
9:05 am
will reopen. well, for the first time since the sex scandal broke out at penn state university, we're hearing from former head football coach joe paterno. paterno was fired two months ago after former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky was charged with sexually abusing at least ten boys over a 15-year period. now, in an interview with "the washington post," paterno says, in hindsight, he wishes he had done more. according to court documents, in 2002, assistant coach mike mcqueary told him he saw sandusky abusing a boy in a locker room. paterno says he was confused about how to handle the situation. >> and then i called my superiors, and i said, "hey, we've got a problem, i think. would you guys look into it?" because i didn't know, you know. i had never had to deal with something like that. and i didn't feel adequate. >> sources close to paterno say that he was furious when he was fired, but in the interview, he
9:06 am
insists he is not bitter. penn state will continue to pay out paterno's contract as well as his legal fees. south carolina is new battleground for "decision 2012." the state's primary is next saturday, less than a week away. fox news hosted a republican presidential forum last night in charleston. each candidate appeared on stage separately and took questions from the audience. newt gingrich zeroed in on his rival's tenure at bane capital. he says republicans need to scrutinize mitt romney's role with the private equity firm. meanwhile, romney focused on the economy. he said he wants government out of the housing business so that free market can work. ron paul was the only gop candidate who did not attend the forum. instead, he's spending the weekend in his home state of texas. the latest poll out of south carolina shows romney once again holding a comfortable lead. according to the reuters/ipsos poll, he's ahead with 37%. ron paul and rick santorum tied for second place with 16%
9:07 am
support. gingrich fell back after holding a strong lead in south carolina in december. he finished fourth with 12% in the poll. well, rick santorum gained a key endorsement this weekend ahead of that south carolina primary. a group of national family and religious leaders are now backing him. the endorsement comes on the last sunday of worship before next week's race. earlier this morning, we had "meet the press" moderator david gregory with us here in the studio. we asked him about romney's commanding lead and if he thinks anyone can catch up. >> but everybody recognizes that romney has a great deal of momentum, down even in south carolina, you know. there's a thought, well, this is going to be the most challenging primary state for him, and that's probably true, up until now, but he's still a very commanding presence, having gone 2-0 thus far. a group of evangelicals have thrown their support behind santorum, but they're not calling on anybody else to get out. so, the field remains what it is, and as long as it's that
9:08 am
big, romney has an opportunity to win with even a relatively low percentage. if you go back four years ago, john mccain had 33%. romney could do that and win with a field this big. >> gop candidate newt gingrich will be a guest on "meet the press" this morning. david gregory will also interview senate majority leader harry reid on whether anything can be accomplished on capitol hill this election year. you can catch "meet the press" right here on nbc 4 at 10:30 this morning. many people are headed here to the d.c. area this weekend to honor dr. martin luther king jr. tomorrow's holiday honors his birthday, which is actually today. and one of the biggest attractions right now is the new king memorial. news 4's derrick ward talked with some of its visitors and joins us from the newsroom live. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, angie and chris. you know, he would be 83 years old today. we can only imagine what role he would be playing in our political and social discourse, had it not been for that fateful day in memphis in april of 1968.
9:09 am
an official holiday reserves his birthday tomorrow, deemed a day off of action, instead of a day off. remember martin luther king's deeds and words are what we do have now, words placed on the memorial on the mall, words not without some controversy. now, inscribed on the north side of the memorial, take a look at the actual phrase. it's actually the actual paragraph, where he reluctantly accepts the role of drum major with some conditions. but the inscription reads simply, "i was a drum major for peace," a quote some say is without the proper context, while others see an accurate paraphrasing of his sensibilities, but there's been a suggestion to include one more inclusive of his statement. those visiting the memorial come down on either side of the argument. >> the letter captured the spirit of what he said, so they should change it. if it requires changing the structure so the whole thing fits, put another slice on there, then they should do that.
9:10 am
>> it sounds so pompous, and i am the drum major. and then, of course, if you read it in context, it's completely different, so i'm actually very happy that they decided to change the inscription into something that makes more sense. it's more like him. >> the attempt was to get it rig right, and he would be satisfied with what was done and he wouldn't have commotion about it because his bottom line was love. >> reporter: -- at the memorial in his honor. of course, this is the first commemoration of his life since the memorial was dedicated. and of course, tomorrow, events at the memorial, a parade in anacostia, and the celebration at the national cathedral as well, just a few of the official observations of the day. we're live in the newsroom. now back to you. >> a lot of great things going on there, derrick. thank you very much. well, it's 9:10 right now, and still ahead, airfares on most carriers may be about to go up without costing you an extra dime. we'll explain why when we return. and iran is blaming the u.s. for a bombing that killed a

and israel for the attack. now iran state tv reports that the iranian foreign ministry has reliable documents and evidence that the bombing was somehow connected to the cia. the white house and state department officials say the u.s. had absolutely nothing to do with the attack. big changes are coming to airlines that could change how you buy a ticket online. starting january 26th, all airline ticket prices must include any government taxes and fees when the ticket price is made public. once it's added up, that can raise a ticket price by 20%. in all, airlines will also have to tell you the cost up front of checking the luggage. >> all of the fees that the airlines will charge you will be listed, whether it's a baggage fee, the taxes that you might pay. >> southwest, spirit and allegiant airlines are suing to block the rules. meanwhile, a few other customer-friendly rules take effect this month. airlines must promptly notify passengers of cancellations,

outside, beautiful sunshine out there but it is january sunshine, for sure. temperatures are responding ever so slowly now. but at least it's a good-looking day to be outside. temperature now up to 29 degrees at national airport. that's a two-degree improvement from last hour. those winds still remain, though, out of the north-northwest at 12 miles per hour, and that northwesterly breeze will keep windchills in the mid-20s for most of this afternoon. so, it's going to be a chilly day to spend any extended periods of time outside. definitely walk the dog on the sunny side of the street, for sure. 27 now gaithersburg and baltimore, 28 silver spring and college park, down towards buoy, maryland. 31 degrees in buoy this morning. get out into fairfax county, falls church out to restin, temperatures in the mid-20s. like i said, at least the sun's out, so that's going to help a little bit but temperatures starting in the 20s will only climb another five or six degrees for afternoon highs. no precipitation out there with the blue skies and a little light rain and snow way down
9:25 am
across tidewater this morning, nothing in the way of accumulations. and around the mid-atlantic, skies are clearing out as high pressure builds in from the west. a weak front dropping through, sort of the reinforcing push of the cool air. that's why today will be colder than yesterday. nonetheless, after a crisp, winter feel outside today, this area of high pressure's going to promise some changes in our weather as we get into monday, and especially into tuesday. so, that's going to lead us to another very cold night tonight, teens and 20s for start-up temperatures on your monday morning. then tomorrow, or monday night into tuesday morning, here we are on our futurecast. at 3:30 tuesday morning, we're focusing on the overnight time frame, monday night into early tuesday. possibility of a little frozen precipitation as the precip just gets started, temperatures may be just close enough to freezing to be watched very, very carefully. eventual eventually, this warm front will put everybody well into the 40s and 50s for daytime highs on tuesday. so, what may start out as a little wintry mix will quickly all become rain. not expecting anything in the
9:26 am
way of accumulations or problems. nonetheless, here's your sunday forecast. plenty of sunshine, a few fair weather clouds, that's about it definitely a bundle-up day today with temperatures only climbing into the mid-30s. then tomorrow, a bright and sunny but cold start. temperatures in the teens and 20s in the morning. a milder afternoon coming, highs in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees, but clouds will really be on the increase tomorrow afternoon. so it won't be quite as pretty of a day as today will be. then overnight monday into tuesday morning, we're keeping a close eye on that. i don't think we'll have much of a winter weather threat in washington itself, but you folks in the shenandoah valley, northern maryland, panhandle of west virginia may have a little bit of a different story. we're going to watch that very, very carefully. then windy and cold weather returns for wednesday and that lingers into the end of the week. >> all right. thank you, chuck! >> you're welcome. well, the nbc 4 health and fitness expo has some mojo working. >> it's officially under way. it started yesterday and continues all day at the washington convention center.
