globes. from martin scorcese to spielberg, streep to the silent era it was a night that saw hollywood honor its past while celebrating legends who are still creating some of their best work. investigation. now his employer said he made an unauthorized deviation in the ship's course bringing it too close to shore, then made mistakes handle it. investigators say he himself was on shore while passengers were still scrambling to get off the ship. this was friday night. the latest rescue from on board was yesterday. >> this is not happening. >> reporter: the pictures emerging from the costa concordia -- [ screaming ] >> reporter: people screaming. just after, passengers experienced a loud rumble, a shake, tilting and then a reassuring announcement. >> the situation is under control. >> reporter: the calm lasted as long as the lights did. >> people were passing out, getting nervous, having chest pains. i was having chest pains. i was having anxiety because i don't know how to swim. >> reporter: panicked passengers, desperate for escape. some fought for lifeboats.

>> we were dangling above the water with the lifeboats probably for another hour before they even released them. >> 30 feet up. >> reporter: hours on a swiftly sinking ship. >> when we got into the water we couldn't get away from the ship because it kept towing in. >> reporter: many finally just jumped into the cold black water. >> they were saying that it was just an electrical problem, but it wasn't. we saw the big rock outside. >> reporter: the rock that ripped a 160-foot gash in the hull. at least five people died. more are missing including two americans. and now the company, owned by carnival, reveals in a statement, there may have been significant human error, the vessel appears to have been too close to shore, the captain appears not to have followed

procedures. he says navigation showed the way was clear. he was suspected of manslaughter and abandoning ship. days after the disaster, rescuers keep looking. this man, the ship's purser was found on board just yesterday afternoon. this honeymooning couple, saturday night. searchers found the bodies of two elderly men. 120 americans were on board. families from all over the country headed home with awful memories. they never dreamed possible. >> it was virtually a scene from "titanic." it felt like we were doing the actual scene. it was surreal. >> reporter: these are live pictures now from the scene. overnight rescuers pulled the body of a sixth victim from on board. this morning they have had to suspend operations because the ship is still sinking. conditions are too dangerous. the two americans who are missing have been identified by

their local paper as gerald and barbara heil from minnesota. natalie? >> all right, michelle kosinski seeing those pictures, it's unbelievable. the ananayis family was among the last to leave and they just got back to the u.s. good morning to you all. >> good morning. >> how are you all holding up? you just got home last night. >> just been home a few hours. i think we're doing as best as we can at this point. >> we just feel blessed to be alive. >> you certainly are cindy, describe the moment when the ship hit the rock. >> we were sitting in the dining room, just eating our family meal and all of the sudden, everything just started shaking

and a people were running and there was just a blackout. we just didn't know where to go. >> valerie, you described this experience as being pretty much like exactly what happened with the "titanic." describe the chaos on board. what were they telling you to do? >> it was very sad. the chaos was something that you see in the movie "titanic." there was no direction by any of the crew. a lot of the passengers were panicking rather than trying to stay calm and think things through. people were falling, things were flying. it was just a very -- >> how would you -- i'm sorry. we have a little bit of a delay here. georgia, let me ask you. in a statement the cruise company say in handling the emergency the captain appears not to have followed standard

procedures but it is becoming clear that the crew acted bravely and swiftly to help evacuate more than 4,000 individuals during a challenging situation. georgia, in your experience how were the crew members handling this emergency? >> first of all, i have been on over 75 cruises. i have a lot of experience. there was absolutely no leadership provided. there was no direction. there were no officers available. everybody was one man for themselves in this. the only way people got off the ship was not with the help of the personnel. you did not see one officer there. people did not know how to do anything. it was very disorganized and there was no help. you were on your own. >> georgia, i know you describe an encounter you had with a young couple from argentina with a baby. they asked for your help with their baby. can you tell me what happened? >> yes. we were trying to get to a

banister to get as high as we could. we had first been in a lifeboat they didn't know how to get started and they couldn't function well with it, so we had to get out of it. as we got out, this family we had been in the lifeboat with came up and they tried to get up to the banister where we were, where we thought we were safe and they turned to me and said, take my baby and they gave me their 2-year-old and i held onto the baby as long as i could, but we were at the top of a stairwell and i was holding on with one hand and i was afraid that the baby -- because the ship kept going back and sinking hr and i was afraid i would lose balance and the baby would fall down the banister. >> do you know what happened with the couple or the -- >> no. i would love to know if they survived. there were a lot of people --

>> dean, i know you were, in fact, one of the last to get on a lifeboat. can you tell me how you finally got out? >> i never got on a lifeboat. yeah, we got a lifeboat but we had to climb up. when the ship turned over completely 90 degrees we were actually walking on the outside walls. >> you were walking on the very outer perimeter of the ship? is that right? on top of the ship? >> yes. on top of the ship because we were all down below on the interior passageway. a ladder came down and we all climbed up the ladder, hundreds of us. >> how long then before -- from the moment the boat started to list to when you were able to get off the boat, how long did that rescue then take? >> we were on the boat between

9:15 and 9:30 in the mediterranean. we didn't get off until 2:30 in the morning at that time. >> wow. >> there was only two crew members behind me. we had to get up actually on the outside of the ship. we walked along where the windows were. i don't know what deck it is. there was an open deck area. with help from others, some german nationals and an austrian national which actually put their lives on the line, helping us pull passengers up. we had to crawl along and there were license left from the boats that were guidelines. they eventually cinched them off down where the last boat was coming around. we shimmied down those ropes and

had to jump into the lifeboat. that was not far from where the damage was from the rocks. >> what a harrowing experience you have all been through. george, dean, valerie, cindy. we are glad you're safe and sound and back home once again. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. >> now here's savannah. >> now to presidential politics and another shake-up to the republican field. jon huntsman is quitting the race just five days before south carolina's primary. peter alexander is in charleston, south carolina, this morning with the details. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. and then there were five. governor jon huntsman will make official today the announcement he's coming out of the race at 11:00. one adviser says huntsman's

concern was that his path going forward would only take votes from governor mitt romney saying he was not one to stand in the way of a candidate best able to beat barack obama. just hours after winning the endorsement of south carolina's largest newspaper, former utah governor jon huntsman told advisers he's dropping out of the race. short on cash and struggling to revive the campaign after a third place finish in new hampshire he's expected to endorse mitt romney today. barely a week ago he got into this exchange with mitt romney. >> this nation is divided because of attitudes like that. >> reporter: south carolina may also be the last stand for romney's remaining republican rivals who this weekend courted the large block of social conservatives. >> we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights.

>> who will be faithful to your values? >> faith at the center of your lives and the center of our country's life. >> reporter: rick santorum wins a coveted endorsement from 150 evangelical christian leaders in texas. >> we're going to get a network of grassroots leaders here lining up behind us and giving us the surge we need coming down to this last week. >> reporter: the influential group in texas hopes to rally behind a conservative to the front-runner romney. several candidates are targeting evangelicals including rick perry who counts on christian conservatives to keep his campaign alive. >> we are the most social conservative and fiscal conservative in the race. >> reporter: and newt gingrich. >> i hope every conservative will reach the conclusion that to vote for anybody but gingrich is to help romney win the nomination. >> reporter: gingrich and his supporters are consistetinuing attack mitt romney's business background. but newt gingrich was booed when

coach for not helping him hire a lawyer to fight a criminal conviction. zappos has been victim of a hacking and is notifying customers their personal information may be compromised telling users to reset pa passwords but say credit card information wasn't accessed. and a big upset in football as the new york giants trounced the packers 37-20 at lambeau field. they now head to the nfc championship game against san francisco. earlier sunday the ravens advanced to the afc championship and will go head to head with the new england patriots. the first lady will make a guest appearance on "icarly" tonight to champion one of her main causes, supporting military families. michelle obama is a big fan of the show and watches with her daughters malia and sasha. now back to natalie, savannah and al.

a lot of speeches, as you mentioned, you were called god by meryl streep, the punisher by madonna. so you have quite a tough reputation, i think, with your talent. is that fair to say? >> well, i think you sit with michelle williams, meryl streep and madonna. they are all at the same table. they're all nominated for golden globes. i think somebody -- we were incredibly lucky and incredibly honored. >> you obviously have "the artist," "my week with marilyn," "the iron lady," all big winners. what's your secret? >> i think you take risks and there are rewards. these are great movies. you know, "the iron lady" in the middle of an election, you see the values that margaret

thatcher espouses. it's incredible. there are myths we blow away in the movie. she was a social progressive, pro choice, pro gay, pro health service. yet she was fiscally conservative. those people who put her name in vain are just lying about it. i think the movie is explosive and fantastic. i think marilyn is an entertaining, smart movie with the performance by michelle williams and "the artist" is just fun and a good time. last night was, for me, truly amazing. i loved getting kidded around by -- you know, when you're kidded around by madonna you've just got to react with a sense of humor. >> right. absolutely. before we go, we'd love to say good-bye to uggy the dog. can he give us a farewell? does he perform on command unlike some other talent?

john edwards. his criminal trial is being postponed now because it's been revealed edwards is battling a serious heart condition. nbc's senior investigative correspondent lisa myers has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. a family friend tells nbc news that john edwards is suffering from irregular heart rhythms and the condition has caused him to lose consciousness at times. the problem is described as serious and potentially more dangerous than doctors first thought but not immediately life-threatening. when john edwards arrived for a hearing at the greensboro, north carolina, federal courthouse a family friend said he'd already had two episodes which involved chest pains or loss of consciousness. the friends said edwards has had an irregular heart rhythm since december and was experiencing symptoms during the hearing that day. judge catherine eagles said the

cardiologist wrote that he'd had three episodes, that the condition could be life-threatening if untreat d and that he needs a procedure next month and shouldn't drive or travel until then. eagles said, clearly there are some limitations on mr. edwards due to real and serious health issues. >> i think the right thing to do is continue, but i also think the judge sent a clear signal that a she's not putting this case on the back burner. >> reporter: reaction in north carolina was mixed. >> of course i had sympathy for him. it did seem that it occurred at a fairly convenient moment. >> i'm so sad. sorry, john. >> if i had a heart condition they wouldn't delay my trial. why should he be different? >> reporter: edwards is charged with six felonies associated with almost $1 million provided by two wealthy donors to hide his then pregnant mistress rielle hunter while he was running for president.

the government says that amounted to illegal campaign contributions. edwards's lawyers argue he didn't vie laolate the law and money was to hide the affair from his wife elizabeth. new photos taken on christmas eve show rielle hunter and edwards with their 3-year-old daughter quinn. a family friend said edwards and took his daughter to a christmas eve church service. the drama made edwards one of the most disliked figures in the country. will his health problems and the stress on his children, jack and emma, who have already lost one parent, make him more sympathetic to a jury? >> a few jurors in the end may feel sympathy for him. if his health condition is as serious as the judge thinks it is. >> reporter: edwards's trial is set to begin march 26th at the earliest.

the story. 85-year-old joe paterno, frail and battling lung cancer, is speaking out for the first time about the events that led to his firing aspen state's football coach. >> and then i call mid superiors and i said, hey, we got a problem i think. woul you guys look into it? because i didn't know. you know, i had never had to deal with something like that and i didn't feel adequa. >> reporter: in an interview with the washington post paterno said he was confused what to do when an upset mike mcqueary first told him he had seen long-time defensive coach jerry sandusky fondling a young boy in the penn state locker room the night before. paterno reported the incident to athletic director tim curley but acknowledges he never followed up and according to investigators sandusky's child abuse continued for six more years. i didn't know how to handle it,

your yard. provide woodpiles for the little critters around. we'll bring out a porcupine. >> porcupine! so much air time. >> so cute! >> these guys need water just like all animals. >> he has a cute face. >> if you have a pond or bird feeder, leave a fountain or drip running in it so it doesn't freeze over. that will provide water for all the little critters that want to come into your yard. lastly, we have a bobcat. >> oh. >> he's going to get hoda. >> his eyes are following me. >> good, get it. >> you never know what he might do to that. this is one, when you start getting into this size, the wildcats, you don't want to encourage them. don't leave your pets out at night or the pet food out at night. they survive by finding those places to hide during the coldest parts but these are built for being out in the cold. >> unfortunately they find small
