ship. michelle kosinski reports. >> reporter: the pictures emerging from the costa concordia speak -- scream for themselves. >> people were getting nervous. people were having chest pains. i was having chest pains. i was having anxiety because i don't know how to swim. >> reporter: panicked passengers, desperate for escape. >> trying to put people on the life boat. no one was counting. we were screaming saying how many people are on here? then they released the life boats. people were still trying to get on. they were trying, almost falling. >> reporter: search-and-rescue crews today had a tough job. weather conditions were making the ship shift. its submerged side is a hundred feet under water and there is the danger of it sliding farther down a slope but they say they're not giving up until they can reach every single cabin on the ship, make sure no one is still trapped. it was just yesterday they were able to pull the ship's purser

to safety. he was trapped more than 36 hours. although over night they did find the body of a sixth victim. among the 15 or so still unaccounted for, two americans. jerry and barbara heil from minnesota. a vigil was held at their church today. it's difficult for people to hear this was not apparently the result of some engine explosion or electrical failure as was originally a possibility but the company today came out, press conference, and said they believe this was the consequence of human error on the part of the ship's captain. they say he made a decision suddenly to take the ship off course, bring it closer to an island, now he is under arrest in jail under suspicion of manslaughter, causing a ship wreck, and abandoning ship. investigators say they saw him onshore while passengers were still onboard scrambling to get off. but he's defending his action saying navigational systems showed that his route was clear and he denies abandoning ship.

back to you. michelle kosinski reporting. a couple from virginia beach was vacationing on that cruise ship when it ran aground. tonight their family is talking about the ordeal. rick langland and his girlfriend caroline kennedy left for their italian vacation last thursday when the ship hit a reef off the coast of tuscany the couple was able to escape on an emergency life boat, then quickly called home. >> he said he couldn't get into it at the time being he was on a temporary line through the embassy that just gave him enough time to call home. >> he said, mother, i am safe. i said safe from what? didn't you hear about the costa going down? then it dawned on me. >> the couple applied for emergency passports and caught a flight out of rome yesterday. they are now in new york waiting for a flight back to norfolk. we have some breaking news out of rockville. authorities are on the scene of a carbon monoxide incident in the 12,000 block and an apartment building has been evacuated as authorities determine the source of this. we are told that six people are

being treated for nonlife threatening injuries and have a crew heading that way. we'll update you. a northwest d.c. neighborhood is stunned as police try to figure out why someone left a baby girl outside in the cold. that infant was discovered in front of a home on channing street. the men who found her tried desperately to save her life. pat collins joins us live from the neighborhood with the search for this child's mother. pat? >> reporter: wendy, when this baby was found, she had no diaper, no clothes. when the baby was found it was so cold they say the color of her skin was changing. >> seen the child on the concrete steps. they didn't place it on the porch and knock on the door or ring the door bell and run. they just left the child in a place where it couldn't be found until possibly the next day. >> reporter: that's emanuel

douger. last night he saw something he will not soon forget. he was on his way home from the store. it was after 11:00 and it was cold in the 20s and here on this concrete step he saw a little baby girl. she was just wrapped in a towel. >> i still can't get it into my head i seen what i seen. my mind is still trying to tell me, you know, i didn't see what i seen because i have two kids of my own and i can't even picture that happening. >> reporter: emanuel ran a couple doors down the street, got his father. they called 911 and tried to revive that baby. >> she was cold but we were hoping for life in her. and we jus were hoping for the best. but she never gained consciousness. >> the baby taken to children's hospital and pronounced dead. detectives from the special victims unit in the neighborhood

trying to locate the mother. >> we believe the child is about a week old so we'd be asking anyone who notices somebody they knew was pregnant or recently gave birth to a child and the child is no longer around with no reasonable explanation to please give us a call. >> reporter: this tragic death has brought a great sense of sorrow to the neighborhood. ian mill lives on channing street. the baby was found on the steps leading to his house. he said he didn't know about it until the neighbors knocked on his door. >> we're just heart broken. i mean, we have two kids and, yeah. you just wonder, you know, what -- you know there's a mom that's pretty desperate and doesn't have a lot of support so, you know, that's difficult to, yeah, it's difficult to take in. >> reporter: police tonight still waiting for the autopsy report. police out still trying to find the baby's mother.

wendy, back to you. >> pat collins, thank you. tonight in prince george's county police are on the hunt for three men who are behind an armored car heist that happened in bowie about 8:00 this morning. investigators say the men wearing masks robbed the truck at a shopping center on crane highway. and they took off with some cash but so far no arrests. it is a day of remembrance for slain civil rights leader martin luther king jr. his dream and his legacy being honored with charity and parades today and for the first time at the new martin luther king jr. memorial on the national mall. here is tom sherwood. ♪ all around the world i'm going to let it shine ♪ >> reporter: a washington area a capella group called song rise was singing old civil rights songs. ♪ all around d.c. i'm going to let it shine ♪ >> reporter: this was the first martin luther king holiday since the memorial opened along the tidal basin last october drawing

tens of thousands of visitors, especially on this day. >> we're so distracted today by our technology, by our jobs, by just trying to get more out of life. and i feel like the message of martin luther king is to just slow down and pay more attention to how we treat each other. >> reporter: from a parade in southeast washington that was revived after several years absence, to a quiet, carnegie library open house sponsored by the d.c. historical society. it was a day to celebrate king in many different ways. >> they, too, elected to come in and give back in their way and i think that's important. we all cannot go out and paint and scrape but there are other intellectual and cultural ways we can contribute on a day like this. >> reporter: groups and individuals throughout washington, maryland, virginia, and the nation celebrated the king holiday monday. >> we were actually just talking, it's great to not only come to see the monument for the first time ourselves but to see

other people seeing the monument. >> myself, who remember king as a little guy, was ten years old with the march on washington, and i remember being down here. i was just telling my family how i stood in front of the reflection pool. it brings back a lot of memories and fondness. >> reporter: tom sherwood, news 4, washington. more than 2 million people have visited the new king memorial since it opened last year. the first family celebrated dr. king's legacy by doing some volunteer work. the president along with his wife michelle and daughter malia helped spruce up the library at brown education center in d.c. president obama used the event to help paint a clear picture of dr. king's words action. >> if you look at that speech talking about dr. king as a drum major, what he really said was that all of us can be a drum major for service. all of us can be a drum major for justice. there's nobody who can't serve.

>> the president painted a quote from dr. king on the library that read the time is always right to do what is right. and the first lady painted the words "i have a dream." well, our little crazy weather pattern is going to continue and we're going to actually get some rain mixing in with cold air a little bit later. let's get the latest from our chief meteorologist doug kammerer. our weird little winter is just not leaving us alone. >> no. it's gone up and gone down. we see temperatures in the 60s and this weekend we saw temperatures in the 30s. and now it looks like we'll see a little bit of both over the next 12 hours. right now 39 degrees the current temperature with winds out of the south at 11 miles per hour. that puts our wind chill currently at 32. so a little bit of a chilly evening. temperatures to the north and west into the 30s. 36 in fed rick. 35 in culpepper. there is milder air starting to work on in as well as the precipitation. you can see that rain, most of it very light rain at the time. some of that could be mixed with some light sleet to the north

the field of gop candidates for the white house is smaller tonight. former utah governor jon huntsman dropped out and he threw his support behind front-runner mitt romney. steve handelsman now with a look at how that decision could affect saturday's pivotal primary in south carolina and

beyond. >> reporter: jon huntsman pulled the plug in south carolina where he was polling last. >> today i am suspending my campaign for the presidency. >> reporter: the former utah governor was beaten in new hampshire by mitt romney who huntsman endorsed today. >> i believe it is now time for our party to unite around the candidate best equipped to defeat barack obama. >> reporter: with a seven-point lead in state polls in five days until the south carolina primary romney hopes conservatives stay split. between rick santorum, who dismissed the huntsman endorsement. >> well, moderates are backing moderates. >> reporter: and newt gingrich. >> if every conservative votes for me we will win on saturday by a huge margin. >> reporter: this past saturday evangelical leaders urged christian conservatives to unite behind santorum to try to stop that romney backers launched an attack ad. >> santorum voted to raise the

debt limit five times. >> reporter: jon huntsman deplored the negativity. >> this race has degenerated into an onslaught of negative and personal attacks not worthy of the american people. >> reporter: but just one week ago in new hampshire, the former utah governor personally slammed his fellow mormon moderate. >> governor romney enjoys firing people. i enjoy creating jobs. >> reporter: as huntsman endorsed him today the front-runner stayed away. he's focused on conservative votes. mitt romney figures if he can win some and the rest of the conservative votes are split in south carolina, he gets his third win and a clear path to the nomination. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. after a three-week break for the holiday congress goes back to work on the hill tomorrow. some of the key issues, lawmakers tackling during the 2012 session, how to pay for an extension of the payroll tax cut. and unemployment benefits. all that while also trimming the

budget deficit. there are major differences on all of those topics between house republicans and democrats. the senate reconvenes on the 23rd. >> doug is here now and i'm ready for a warmup. >> are you? three days? that's all you got? three days of cold weather? >> yeah. >> you're going to get a warmup. temperatures are going to skyrocket during the day tomorrow. but any time they skyrocket, you know it's coming with some wind. i think we'll get above 60 tomorrow in some areas. >> nice. >> not bad at all. if you like it warm for those of you who like it cold and you're wait forgue snow keep waiting. here is snow down toward floyds county in virginia. the mountainous area did pick up a little snow. not a whole lot but enough to get out the salt. you can see that guy salting there. yes, even a couple icicles. we've not had much at all around our area. as far as winter weather is concerned to talk about. high temperatures though did feel a little bit more like winter today than they have most of the winter. 41 degrees the high temperature

today. low of 25. the average low is 28 so below average. today is the third day in a row below average and we've only seen that one other time this winter. we have not seen much in the way of cold air and right now any cold air that's left is quickly getting out of here. here's why. winds out of the south right now at 11 miles per hour. current temperatures 39 degrees. we do have a little wind chill to talk about. right now actual temperatures 37 in winchester. 39 martinsburg. 39 d.c. 40 in annapolis. a little warmer down to the south where that warmer air is of course. you put in that wind and you get a wind chill of 31 in gaithersburg, 31 in frederick. 30 in winchester. 37 down toward fredericksburg. a little bit of a chilly evening. we have some rain making its way our way. right now most of the rain is off toward the west. you don't tz around the i-95 corridor but back toward the mountains right along the blue ridge back toward front royal maybe around winchester and martinsburg. back toward petersburg. would not be surprised to see a little light sleet mix in here but i'm not expecting any

problems on the roadways. and this warmera will move in fast enough that it will change it all over to rain by the time you get up tomorrow morning. there is the moisture making its way our way. this is just one set of the moisture. a lot more off to the west as that storm makes its way to the west. speaking off to the west, 55 in atlanta. 66 in memphis. 66 in st. louis. and that's some of the warmer air that's going to start to move our way over the next 24 hours or so. really over the next 12 hours or so. thanks to this area of high pressure. this is the area of high pressure that kept us so cold the last couple days. that is sinking off to the south and east. we'll give us a return flow. we'll see moisture around 8:00 tomorrow morning. but then windy and warm during the day tomorrow. do expect some rain. winds could gust 30 to 40 miles per hour but it will be of the warm variety as the temperatures soar into the 50s and close to 60. another cold front moves through, a few more showers and then breezy and back to the cool air. maybe even cold weather during the day on wednesday. let's break down the rain for you as we make our way through

the night tonight. you can see the rain around 10:30. pretty much around the i-66 area to the north. that's why i expect most of this activity to be right on through the morning tomorrow. then look what happens tomorrow morning. just about everybody. seeing some rain. maybe some moderate rain showers. i don't expect to see anything heavy but i do expect to see some rain around your rush hour. so give yourself extra time tomorrow morning. then a break in the afternoon. if we get sunshine temperatures will go up even more. clouds on the increase. showers moving in. breezy. 35 to 40 degrees this evening. tomorrow morning, a few showers and i'll call it showers likely across our region. 36 to 42 degrees. not nearly as cold as it was this morning. tomorrow afternoon, how about this? 57 to 63. rain likely early. then heaviest north. mild, rather windy. could be some clearing down to the south. so once again if we do get that temperatures would rise even more. 42 on your wednesday. rather breezy on wednesday. possible flurry on thursday. but i'm not expecting much. then a little cold snap coming in on friday.

the man suspected of cutting women's back sides in fairfax county is now behind bars. police arrested johnny pimontel last friday in his home country of peru inside a shopping mall. he is accused in more than a dozen attacks here in the washington area between february and june of last year. in each case investigators say he went up to shoppers in fairfax county and cut their rear ends with a razor blade or box cutter. police are working now to extradite him back to the united states. former penn state coach joe paterno is talking about the scandal that cost him his job. in an interview with "the

washington post" the 85-year-old says he regrets not doing more when it came to allegations of child abuse by his defensive coordinator jerry sandusky. he recalls a very upset mike mccreary telling him he saw sandusky fondling a boy in the penn state locker room in 2002. >> and then i called my superiors and i said, hey, we got a problem i think. would you guys look into it? because i didn't know. you know. i had never had to deal with something like that. and i didn't feel adequate. he reported the incident but admits he never followed up. according to prosecutors sandusky's child abuse continued for six more years. paterno who is now battling lung cancer says he had a, quote, wonderful experience at penn state and does not want to walk away from the situation being bitter. a man who is wanted for a series of home invasions in maryland arrested in north carolina. tonight the search is now on for his accomplice. new details about these attacks come to light.

we are following breaking news out of montgomery county this evening where authorities are on the scene of a carbon monoxide leak. we go live now to veersmill road in rockville. bring us up to speed. >> reporter: we are at the rock creek terrace apartments in the 12,000 block of veersmoore road. at 6:00 someone became ill and complained of nausea. some people fainted. this is concentrated to a ground floor apartment in the building at 12,510. we are told one person has been transported and five or six other people are being checked out. authorities got here and began doing some checks and found concentrations of carbon monoxide of about 100 parts per million in that ground floor apartment. we're told that 35 parts per million and below are safe.

again, no one -- no life threatening injuries at this point. one person has been transported to a hospital. other folks are being checked out. they've evacuated the entire building and brought a ride on bus here to keep people warm while they clear the building. they don't know the exact source yet but are concentrating on a ground floor apartment. again, high concentrations of carbon monoxide. we're told the saving grace is there wasn't a long exposure. luckily this happened before people went to bed because carbon monoxide of course is a silent killer and could have been a lot worse but luckily those people were awake and did begin feeling ill. they called authorities and found the high concentrations of carbon monoxide here. they're clearing the building and expect to let people back in hopefully once they determine the source and that it has been abated. one person transported. five or six others being treated. and other people evacuated from this building being kept warm in a ride on bus here in montgomery county. that's where we're live. now back to you. >> thank you. a registered sex offender is behind bars facing charges in

three violent home invasions across maryland. >> the crimes happened last week in bethesda, wheaton, and temple hills. this weekend a break in the case. >> the suspect was tracked down nearly 300 miles away in north carolina. news 4's darcy spencer has details of the arrest plus reaction from the suspect's family. >> reporter: a woman who says she is the aunt of kevin ray showed up at a press conference to hear first hand the evidence against her neve unite. >> this is dumb founding to us. this is not the person we know. we're being made out in the media to be a family of thugs and other things and that's not who we are you know. it could be a bad apple in some families. >> reporter: police say 33-year-old kevin ray had an accomplice when he committed a home invasion robbery and sexually assaulted a housekeeper in a bathroom in bethesda last wednesday. that suspect has not been arrested so far. >> the second suspect didn't go in immediately. he went in after some period of time and joined the first

suspect in the house. >> reporter: ray is charged in three home invasion robberies and two sexual assaults that happened in wheaton, bethesda, and temple hills from tuesday to friday of last week. in the friday attack he tied up six residents including a 7-year-old and sexually assaulted a woman in the home. >> the things that occurred in all three of these are evil. >> reporter: police say ray used some of the victims' credit and debit cards. police say the photo of him using one of those cards led to him being identified and tracked down to kitty hawk, north carolina, where he was arrested saturday morning. police in prince georges say they executed a search warrant at a home here on dallas drive in temple hills where ray had been staying and recovered evidence linking him to the crimes. >> there were several hand guns recovered, several items of clothing, wigs, masks. >> he was staying right here. >> he was very quiet about it. didn't hear or know anything about it. >> reporter: ray was put on

maryland's sex offender registry after he was convicted of third-degree sex offense in 2005. records show he also pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a case dating back to 1995. ray's aunt says this has taken a toll on the family. >> we had an opportunity to look -- haven't had an opportunity to look him in his face. this as highly publicized case. we are victims, too. because we didn't do it and we're getting punished too. >> reporter: kevin ray is being held without bond in montgomery county. he is scheduled to have a bond review hearing at some point on tuesday. in palmer park, darcy spencer, news 4. montgomery county states attorney is exploring prosecuting ray under a repeat offender law. that could lead to him being locked up without the possibility of ever being paroled. a 22-year-old charged with driving under the influence in a crash that killed an 8-year-old boy in alexandria. police say victor aldona was driving on duke street near i-395 yesterday afternoon when he hit the victim brian

hernandez chavez. the boy was walking with his mother at the time. aldona is charged with dui manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving without a license. he is due in court tomorrow morning. the crash marks the first deadly pedestrian crash of 2012 in alexandria. today hundreds of gun owners rallied in richmond. they are lobbying lawmakers for expanded gun rights. opponents also demonstrated. julie carey has a report from richmond. >> reporter: like dozens of other rallies stanged on the capitol grounds only these protesters carry guns, their stickers a clear statement of their view. with the virginia house and senate now both under gop control, the gun owners hope this will be a big year to relax weapons restrictions. >> this is a good year for us to be able to get a lot of things passed with the way the senate and the house turned out. so i thought it was important to come out and show force. >> reporter: among their chief priorities they want to drop the requirement that gun owners get a permit to carry a concealed

weapon. >> if you are trusted to own a gun, why do we really care how you carry it? if you carry it openly or concealed what difference does it make? >> reporter: activists will also push for repeal of the law that limits them to one hand gun purchase a month. and they support a measure to allow college faculty who have permits to carry a concealed weapon on campus and into the classroom. >> if you're eligible to own a firearm, if you carry one normally i see no reason why you should have to disarm because you're walking across a magical line of the campus boundary. >> violence in this country and world. >> reporter: a few hours later on the same spot a gun control rally. these gun control proponents can see the political shift here in richmond makes their fight that much tougher. but they will still push this session for more restrictions. led by virginia tech shooting survivor colin godard and his father they'll continue their years' long push for a requirement for background checks for all virginia gun purchases even with private sales. >> background checks that will allow legal law abiding gun owners to own their guns and

walk out of the store or gun show and actually stop dangerous people with criminal or mental illness histories to not easily arm themselves at very publicly advertised events throughout the state. >> godard and like-minded lawmakers say they'll fight any attempt to lift gun restrictions. julie carey, news 4. >> gun control supporters say they'll oppose the effort to allow guns in college classrooms. the number of deaths and injuries among pedestrians listening to head phones more than tripled in the past six years. researchers at the university of maryland looked at more than 100 crash reports between 2004 and 2011. they found a lot of cases the vehicle or train sounded a horn but the pedestrian couldn't hear the warning. that led to deaths in theerl 3/4 of the cases. the stud liss found more than two-thirds of the victims were male and under the age of 30. still ahead, a maryland casino has hundreds of jobs and we'll tell you how you can apply for them coming up next. plus more pain at the pump.

i'm meteorologist doug kammerer. right here, where am i? storm center 4. at nbc washington. you can always check us out at nbc washington.com. just had to get that in my head. a little bit on the cool side during the day today. high temperatures only in the 30s in most low cases right now sitting at 39 degrees. to the south though we did reach the 40-degree mark. some areas in the low 40s right now. winds out of the south currently 11 miles per hour. that gives us a wind chill currently 32 at the airport. 31 gaithersburg. 34 manassas. right now culpepper coming in. no real wind chill there. storm 4 doppler radar showing the shower activity starting to make its way into the region. most of these showers will be on the light side. you notice the pinks. we are reporting some sleet down there toward hot springs in toward virginia around harrisburg and also western maryland around allegheny county and also garrett county, maryland reporting a little bit in the way of sleet too. watch out into portions of west virginia and that region. for the rest of us we're just talking about that chance for some rain overnight tonight. low temperatures down to about 38 in washington. 36 in gaithersburg.

but i think the numbers will be going up by the time you wake up tomorrow morning and look how far they'll go up tomorrow. high temperature around the d.c. area. could reach 60 degrees if everything works out correctly. i do at least think everybody will be into the mid to upper 50s during the day tomorrow. so if you were hoping this cold air would go away quickly, there you go. >> all right. thank you. >> sounds good. it is going to be one, going to be maryland's largest casino. it is going to have hundreds of jobs and today its ploemt center opened and it started taking applications. maryland live needs to fill more than 1500 positions for its new location near arundel mills mall. there are full and part-time jobs available in all departments and for all shifts. that employment center in hanover will be open monday through friday from 10:00 to 7:00 in the evening until the casino opens in june. you can also make your application online. >> the price at the pump is high ans going to get higher. the american automobile association says the price of
