a cloudy and slippery start to your weekend across the area. nobody escaped. all a mix of freezing snow and rain, a mess out there. you can see a coating of white across the city early this morning. major roads are just fine. but you don't have to get too far off the major roads into the secondary streets and neighborhood before things get very slippery. i assure you, your sidewalk and driveway are extra slick. be careful out the front door. temperatures remain below freezing. this will stay the case the next couple of hours. everything's frozen will stay just like that. 28 in frederick, maryland, 28 in gaitherersburg, 21 in washington, 29 in bethesda, silver springs, fairfax county, temperatures neur 30 degrees. 30 degrees in leesburg, and 32

head to the policy. just -- to the polls. just a few days ago, mitt romney was expected to win by a landslide and now newt gingrich is in the lead. gingrich is polling 32% amongst voters, romney just two percentage points behind at 30%. they open at 7:00 this morning and close at 7:00 tonight. the polls are now open in south carolina, where we mentioned, results could send mitt romney on his way to the republican nomination or cause a free-for-all amongst the candidates. steve handelsman has more now from any campaign trail. >> mitt romney, the next president of the united states. >> reporter: wrapping up his campaign before today's vote, mitt romney tried to focus on barack obama. >> the american people want a different course. >> reporter: is romney's course changing? his 12 point lead is fading fast. >> frankly, to be in a neck to neck race at this last moment is kind of exciting.

untrue statements about newt gingrich. one e-mail made to look like a breaking news report saying gingrich's second wife was forced to have an abortion. the second was made to look like a message from gingrich, admitting to the allegation. gingrich as well as the south carolina republican leader have called on the state's attorney general to conduct a full investigation. two of the candidates are not only battling on the ballot but in the same restaurant. mitt romney and newt gingrich are set to appear at the same breakfast shop this morning. the two say they will show up at tommie's country ham house at 10:45 despite the other candidate being there. both candidates laughed off the coincidence saying they're okay sharing the stage with each other. two weeks after the iowa caucuses, we finally have a winner. rick santorum has taken the hawkeye votes by 34 votes taken away a win by mitt romney,

we look live at washington. cloudy skies and cold. looks and feels like winter. temperatures below freezing, freezing drizzle in washington. we got about an inch of snow in most locations before it switched over to freezing rain during the pre-dawn hours this morning and now yucky looking outside. fr frozen rain drop on the camera. 31 degrees, wind out of the northea northeast. the northeasterly wind will keep the cold air nestled up against the appalachian mountain. snow and freezing but will take a few more hours. 28 in gaitherersburg and rockville and 28 degrees at the air force base and indianapolis. all temperatures below the freezing mark right now. you have to go below southern

virginia to get above the freezing mark. a mix of rain and snow through the morning hours, and it should end mostly as light rain before it tapers off completely. expect everything on the roadways to refreeze tonight. winter weather advisories until 1:00 this afternoon. most of the light drizzle, southern part of the district, prince george's county, south of route 50 here. that's where the worst is. south of i-95, quantico, fredericksburg, pennsylvania, most of this is light freezing rain with snowflakes mixing in, in southern maryland and northern pennsylvania, a nice drying trend. the back edge of precipitation should be here in the next couple of hours.

the massive brush fires. more than 3,000 acres and land and 29 homes were destroyed by the fires. a man admitted to authorities he improperly discarded fireplace a ashes that caught fire and spread quickly and the weather wasn't helping as they battled the blaze. >> it was extremely difficult working conditions, visibility next to nothing. >> rain come into the area. we could potentially have flash floods or mudslides. we are keeping a close eye on it. >> officials say the man is extremely remorseful for accidentally starting the fire and no word whether he will face charges. this morning, the coast guard will evaluate the stability of a grounded cruise ship to see if they can resume their search for 21 people still missing. they were only allowed to search

it's dark, barren, cold and wet and what sun we have comes up and you see people starting to stir now. on these road, the exit road there hasn't been treated yet. they're packing down ice and snow by vehicles traveling it. in montgomery county there is a snow emergency in effect. if you are parked on an emergency route they designate by a bright red sign, they want to make sure they're clear for emergency vehicles should the need arise. for now, a bit of digout and respite until this evening when things clear up. but that thawing and refreezing could make for treacherous travel as chuck has been telling you. keep those things into account. start getting ready to make your move if you need to. you might want to check your particular street and neighborhood because things vary

administration is considering closing the u.s. embassy in syria as a security precaution because security there is deteriorating. officials say the threat of danger to americans in the country has the u.s. administration considering the move. all u.s. personnel would be asked to leave if the embassy closes. a ten month up rising against syria bashar ashad has lead to the deaths of many people. elizabeth smart, the woman kidnapped at knife point at 14 and held captive for nine months is getting married. a spokesman says smart got engaged last weekend and will likely get married this summer. there are no details about her fiance and smart's spokesman says she plans to keep her personal life private. although smart's father has said his future son-in-law is a fine young man. one time street preacher, brian
