good morning. south carolina serves. newt gingrich makes an extraordinary political comeback with a big victory in south carolina's primary. what does it mean for the battle ahead in florida? serious condition. former penn state football coach joe paterno's health takes a turn for the worse in his battle against lung cancer. as students hold a vigil on campus for the legendary coach. and where is casey anthony? there are reports she's been spotted in florida. we'll hear from people who say they've seen her, and where, "today," sunday, january 22nd, they've seen her, and where, "today," sunday, january 22nd, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television
8:01 am
good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a sunday, i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolf. and what a difference a week makes in the world of politics. we were in such a different place a week ago. >> looked like romney could run the table. now you look back and we've had three winners of the first three contests. we're going to be in this for awhile. newt gingrich pulled out a big win in south carolina. now rewriting his political playbook. just a couple weeks ago mitt romney was expected to wrap up the nomination with a victory in south carolina. now the race seems wide open. we're going to get reaction to saturday's primary and look at what's next for the gop candidates as things get very, very interesting. >> then, as mentioned we're going to head to pennsylvania to get the latest on former penn state head coach joe paterno. the 85-year-old is said to be in serious condition after experiencing health complications while battling lung cancer.
8:02 am
paterno's family says he's inspired by the support he's received while they deny false reports that surfaced on the internet saying the legendary coach had passed away. >> switching gears we're going to talk about a girl's basketball team outside chicago that seem to have the winning formula. this team has been undefeated for four seasons. their record, 146-0. we're going to meet the team and find out its secret for success, as they head into the playoffs. >> yeah, a lot of these girls have never lost a game. they have no idea what it's like because they've gone all four years of high school without, you know. >> great legacy. >> then, how about some synchronized swimming to start your sunday morning? this may look easy but the sport requires great strength, endurance, great flexibility, great grace and great timing. >> and you were there? >> and i was there to kibosh all of those things. >> wasn't sure where we were going with this. >> i definitely played with the grace a little bit. but we are going to see if i sunk or swam coming up. i had no idea what was
8:03 am
happening. let's just say. >> my hat's off to you. that does look difficult. >> it was. give those guys some credit. >> you get water in your ears. and one of hollywood's post popular couples, heidi klum and seal said to be heading for a break. we're going to talk about that and other celebrity feuds coming up. we want to begin this morning with politics. in the history making primary, newt gingrich erased a double digit deficit in the polls to win the south carolina primary. for the first time, three separate winners we've seen for the first three gop presidential contests. rick santorum won iowa. mitt romney prevailed in new hampshire. and now gingrich in south carolina. nbc's ron mott is in columbia with details. ron, good morning. >> hey, lester, good morning to you. newt gingrich pulled off something that seemed impossible just a week ago. he came here, he spoke the language, he got the vote out, and in the end he shocked the establishment, and then some. at 68, he's far from a kid, but not from a comeback.
8:04 am
former u.s. house speaker newt gingrich, after forgettable showings in both iowa and new hampshire, surprised nay sayers and maybe even a few supporters, winning the south carolina primary in dramatic fashion. >> thank you. good luck and god bless you. >> reporter: gingrich capitalized on the electorate's appetite for rough and tumble politics, sharpening his tongue against mitt romney. >> where's mitt? i thought he was going to -- i thought he was going to stay and maybe have a little debate. >> reporter: president obama -- >> he has been the best food stamp president in american history. >> reporter: even a debate moderator. >> i am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that. >> reporter: just about anyone who crossed him or his self-described reagan conservative line. >> what gingrich did in south carolina was unite the conservative vote. if he can do that in florida and beyond, watch out. he could actually get this nomination.
8:05 am
>> reporter: while the gingrich campaign soars to florida on the wings of victory, mitt romney heads to the sunshine state under a cloud of doubt, having lost a double digit lead to finish second in south carolina. >> we're now three contests into a long primary season. this is a hard fight. because there's so much worth fighting for. >> reporter: as for former pennsylvania senator rick santorum, competing with gingrich for the conservative vote, he vowed to continue fighting. in to florida, and nevada thereafter. >> three states, three winners. what a great country. >> reporter: texas congressman ron paul greeted his enthusiastic supporters saturday night, saying his campaign strategy is simple. keep running, keep tallying delegates, keep selling a message of change. >> the country is coming our way, this campaign has a long way to go. the momentum is growing. >> reporter: voters in florida go to the polls in just nine days on january 31st. that is a virtual eternity in primary politics.
8:06 am
expect a lot of money to be spent between now and then before all those votes are counted, lester. >> ron mott, thanks. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." good morning, good to see you. >> hey, lester. >> long night for all of us. it looks like the reset button has been pushed in this case. fair characterization? >> i think so. i think you've got three different contests. three different winners. fundamental questions for romney now, and as chuck todd suggested in ron's piece, the ability of gingrich to unite the republican party. there is a disconnect between the establishment of the party that has clearly said it wants mitt romney, and the revenge of the tea party saying not so fast. there's anger, there's anxiety among conservatives. when the grassroots of the party, and gingrich in south carolina connected to that. he was the candidate of grievance, if you will. that's what played out in the vote last night. >> david, we talk so much about momentum. but you look at the exit polling in south carolina. 44% say they decided just yesterday to vote for gingrich. does that kind of momentum likely follow him into florida?
8:07 am
>> yeah, i call it political climate change. i think there's no question that it goes into florida, as there's a sorting out here of the race. romney's got to think about a response. gingrich has to think about how he continues to unite conservatives in a state like florida, which is perhaps more conservative than people give it credit for. and then go to the contests beyond that. and electability being so important, as well. romney's done very well there in iowa and new hampshire. but last night in south carolina, it was gingrich who scored big on that all-important factor, who can beat president obama? i think there's that other element to that, not only who can beat him, but who can take the fight to obama? i think gingrich in south carolina won the battle of that. who can really bring the fight? >> looking at another exit poll, a white born-again evangelicals broke in a big way for gingrich. 45% for romney -- to romney's 21%. is that surprising given the issue, the interview with gingrich's wife that came out during the week?
8:08 am
>> well, look, i think that it was clearly not an issue in south carolina. i think that we've seen in politics that baggage in one's personal life does not necessarily translate into how people make a judgment about how they're going to vote in a race. i think that in terms of social conservatives, we knew this was going to be an issue for governor romney. critics within the republican party have said that romney did too much to raise expectations about south carolina. getting the establishment stoert like the governor of the state nikki haley. but it was kind of hard not to. when it looked like he had won iowa and he won new hampshire he was going to be the front-runner going into south carolina, one way or another. that air of inevitability has been pierced. >> and this conversation continues on "meet the press." tell us about the show this morning. >> oh, it does. it's exciting. newt gingrich will join me this morning. also talk to governor chris christie. a top romney supporter, and our political roundtable should be pretty exciting. we've got chuck todd and others.
8:09 am
>> david gregory, see you then. now here's jen 2345. switching gears now. for penn state football coach joe paterno is said to be in serious condition after experiencing complications battling lung cancer. nbc's michelle franzen is in state college, pennsylvania, with the latest. good morning, michelle. >> well, jenna, good morning. joe paterno is said to be surrounded by family here at the nittany medical center. that after false reports circulated that the legendary coach had passed away. his son jay paterno responded in his own message on twitter saying not only was his father alive and fighting, but inspired by the outpouring of support from this community. holding vigil. penn state students and supporters surrounded the campus statue of legendary football coach joe paterno saturday night. leaving flowers, and praying for the man they affectionately call joe pa. they gathered after word came from the paterno family he was in the hospital, fighting for

8:11 am
paterno seemed determined to tell his story, even though the cancer treatment was taking its toll. >> he's pretty lucid. he does wander a bit. he's hard of hearing now. the chemotherapy has made him a little bit foggy at times. and so, you know, we doesn't talk for very long periods. >> reporter: paterno has been part of penn state's football program for six decades, and has the most wins of any major u.s. college football coach in history. in november, his firing was so controversial, some students rioted. with paterno himself calling for calm. despite being forced out, paterno told jenkins, he still loves the place he worked and called home for most of his life. >> i've had a wonderful experience here at penn state. i don't want to walk away from this thing bitter. >> reporter: the family has also asked for privacy during this difficult time. meanwhile, onward state, the

8:13 am
how much of his reputation or this legacy that you talk about might be tainted because of the recent penn state sex abuse scandal? >> well, i think that when it's all said and done, and we look back, that will be very dim as a part of his legacy. i think it's right at the tail end, which was a bad time for it to happen, but when it comes to remembering joe paterno, i mean, he is synonymous with penn state and penn state football and that university. his generosity, his loyalty to that university over the years, that is what will be remembered. >> all right doug flutie. doug, thank you so much for joining us. once again, here's lester. >> all right, jenna, thanks. now to italy, where the death toll is up to 12 in the cruise ship accident. nbc's duncan golistani is on the island of giglio with the latest. duncan, good morning. >> good morning, lester. you know the costa "concordia" is so close, and yet for more than a week divers have struggled to get the access they need.

the families here are desperate for information so when it does come, it's not what they're hoping for. finally, the costa "concordia" is opening up to rescuers. navy divers have been blasting their way in to search for the missing, yesterday they pulled out the body of a woman near this deck, wearing a life vest, she was close to one of the emergency gathering points. for the families of the other 20 people missing, all they can do is watch and wait. that includes the children of gerald and barbara heil from minnesota. they made the painful trip to the "concordia," the cruise liner that was supposed to give their parents a dream vacation. meanwhile, new audio of captain schettino telling the coast guard he would be the last person to leave. captain, one question, everyone will abandon or will someone remain on board? the captain's reply, i will stay here. of course, he didn't. later blaming the ship for turning on its side quickly.
