if we follow their example. >> reporter: build consensus and lower the temperature which will be tough in this election year. >> thanks, steve. a toughing moment tonight before the state of the union. president obama gave congresswoman gabrielle giffords a big hug. tonight is one of giffords' final appearances at congresswoman. she's set to submit her resignation tomorrow so she could concentrate on making a full recovery following the shooting last year in tucson, arizona that killed six other people. now to a developing story in washington county, maryland tonight. a man stuck in a cave for more than four hours is safe. the ordeal began just 5:30 tonight in the clear spring area. rescuers say the man slid down an area of the cave, got stuck in rocks about 200 feet below ground. teams from montgomery, frederick and washington counties were called in to help get him out of there after a long re ceus

operation. they report he's going to be okay. the man accused of shooting at the white house pleaded not guilty today. not guilty to trying to assassinate the president. oscar ortega hernandez accused of firing a rifle at the white house from constitution avenue in november. the president and mrs. obama were not home at the time. he was arrested several days later in pennsylvania. his lawyers said previously that no evidence exists that puts him at the scene on that night. we're joined now, and we welcome nbc anchor brian williams, who has stepped over. >> i like too where the highest ratings are at 11:00. i was in the neighborhood and i'm here. >> we appreciate that, brian. thanks for stopping by. you know, what many of us heard tonight and i think some might agree was constitutionally mandated state of union, but also a man using the bully pulpit to his maximum advantage.

north. these two systems come together and make a big storm as it makes its way in here later on this week. i'll show you when that storm moves in, what you can expect from it and of course what comes after it in my forecast coming up. >> thanks, doug. a driver who took an exit ramp in the wrong direction tonight was killed. it happened in herndon. they say the car hit another vehicle heads on at leesburg pike in mainsville road. the driver going the correct way was injured, but he's expected to be okay. it's not clear why the driver of that first car went in the wrong direction. look at a live picture of the beltway in fairfax county where a major road closure is less than hour aaway now. it's part of the hot lanes project. it will result in all ramps from the beltway to 95 south being closed. jackie bensen is in springfield. here we go again, huh, jackie? >> reporter: that's right, doreen. imts a big detour and happens in

about 15 minutes. the decision to reroute motorists trying to get to i-95. the major north-south traffic artery on the east coast even for a few hours is not taken lightly by virginia transportation officials. >> part of the 495 express lanes, tonight's activity in this area will be the hanging of a sign across the roadway. we have to get it up. >> reporter: in addition the inner loop of the beltway is affected from 9:00 p.m. to midnight, the left lane of-94 west before the springfield interchange will be closed. after md night all lanes will also be closed. all lanes will be re-opened by 5:00 a.m. wednesday. drivers we spoke to say they're learning to live with it. >> i usually look at my phone to see where the construction is, and i avoid it all the time. >> it's so hard to get through. for now if i want to go through

tonight residents demand pd an end to a series of armed robes in the tinnily town area. the most recent robe was last night. they usually involve two or three robbers who hold up people out of their cars in the evening. at a meeting tonight d.c. police chief said the crimes are part of bigger trend. >> we always catch these folks. we always do. our goal is to catch them as quick as possible, but the biggest challenge is so many different groups are committing these robberies. >> she's working on to get the fcc to make it impossible for smartphones to be use would after tha befr stolen. a dramatic walkout by d.c. firefighters tonight who are angry about the chief's proposal to change their schedule. it happened as the chief ended his state of the department speech as he prepared to take questions, one firefighter called the others to attention and ordered an about face and

dismissed them. the chief wants to change firefighters' shifts from 24 hours to 12 hours. he says it will save the city tens of millions of dollars a year. firefighters say the change will only disrupt their lives. at the end of the 6:00 news tonight we told you about reports of a shooting near south lakes high school near rest ton. they searched the neighborhood for 30 minutes but found no victims or evidence of a shooting. ahead of the game a new crime fighting app goes live on the college park campus tomorrow. university of maryland computer science professor designed the app. in an emergency users can activate the app that sends live video and audio to the campus police dispatch center and potentially on to officers on the street. it relays the user's location. the developer thinking it will make criminals think twice about coming onto campus. >> this is a video that's

implts. man who lived for years claiming to be a member of rockefeller family will be tried for a murder this fall. they determined he was fit to stand trial. he's accused of killing his landlord's son near los angeles in 1995. in 2008 he was arrested in baltimore under the name clark rockefeller. there was an international manhunt. he's charged with kidnapping his daughter. more than 10,000 people stood in long lines and cold weather today to say good-bye to joe paterno. the former penn state football coach was fired as part of the jerry sandusky scandal. to many people paterno will be remembered not only as a

away too much, at least too far out of reach because you need them on thursday. tomorrow should be a day we see slight changes as our storm system moves closer to the area. outside at the capitol gorgeous aacross the region tonight. temperatures have been well above average today and really all the way through the rest of the evening hours. currently sitting at 39 degrees with a high temperature today of 55. 11 degrees above average, 14 out of 24 days this month have been above average, and we go back to december. so far we have seen a very much above average winter. as far as the temperatures out there the last couple of days, 34 on saturday, 32 on sunday, well below average there. but then here we go on the steady climb. 44 degrees yesterday, 55 during the day today, and that roller coaster, that temperature swing continues during the winter months here. 39 degrees is the current temperature out there with our calm wind across the region. really a nice evening to get out and about if you think about doing so this evening at this late hour. 41 in martinsburg and 32 in

frederick. a lot of you wake up to temperatures into the upper 20s early tomorrow morning, but that's not too bad for this time of year. sform 4 doppler radar, nothing across the area. there is a developing storm system off to the west. we're watching this closely. it has a ton of moisture. look at all the rain in through dallas and oklahoma, an area of the country that has been very dry over the past year or so. they really need the rain, and that rain will start to make its way our way during the day tomorrow. let's talk about our weather. first off, high pressure was aacross the area today. nice and warm during the afternoon today. high pressure moves in, but look at the cloud cover. we see high clouds throughout much of the afternoon tomorrow, and then we see that storm pull closer to the area. shower activity during the day on thursday. i don't think we're in for a washout on thursday, but in this area of low pressure moves closer, we'll see the heavier rains late thursday night into early on friday morning. speaking of mornings, how about tomorrow morning. mostly clear a nice start and 27 in the cooler suburbs.

tomorrow afternoon we see sunshine early but more clouds late in the day. cooler and mild, 45 to 49 degrees, but i wouldn't be surprised to see some areas move above 50 across the region to the south. 50 degrees on thursday, 52 on saturday -- rather friday, saturday 48 and sunday is the cold day. high up temperature it there of 40 degrees. most of us on sunday stay in the upper 30s, but no real cold air still and no snow. >> we have been very lucky so far this winter. thank you, doug. ovechkin is sitting out but

i guess flip did his best, huh? >> yeah. it doesn't matter if jon wooden was in there with this team, they're not going to do much better than they have been doing so far. the wizards on a road to nowhere and the president decided it was change for a change. flip saunders fired after two-plus seasons in washington and replaced by assistant coach randy whitman. saunders really didn't have a chance to succeed. the gilbert arenas disaster took this play from playoff contender to lottery regular. this season the wizards 2-15. it's the worst record in the nba. saunders couldn't get any sfars to respond. john wall, nick young and andre all having down years, and as a unit the wizards lack intensity on a nightly basis. the final straw, last night. they were down by 30 in philly at halftime. gr grunfeld felt like he had to make a move. >> i don't know if the players were responding the way we
