with the president. the associated press snapded a photo of brewer pointing her finger at president obama after he got off of air force one today. she handed him an invitation to talk about the border, an important issue to arizonaens and one on which they disagree. the president said he was unhappy about their portrayal of their last meeting in which brewer wrote about it in a book. as the two reportedly talked over each other, the president walked away in the middle of her sentence. moments later she appeared on the fox news channel. >> i want our boerds secured. i want our nation protected. he wants amnesty. we're never going to agree on that and we agree to disagree on that subject. i don't know why he was surprised by my book but he evidently is and he is thin skinned in regards to it. >> reporter: the president said sometime after the confrontation he would be glad to meet with the governor again. good evening. >> college park, maryland where

police are on alert prepared for whatever might happen following the maryland/duke basketball game. >> reporter: good evening. i'm here at lehigh road and baltimore avenue. over here is where the game is going. they are down by 10. we're talking about maryland. come over here and you can see prince georges county police have stepped up enforcement. you see the squad cars here? they are lined up and down baltimore avenue in this direction. a lot of folks say when they see those cars it is a definite deterrent to stop them from rioting. let's roll video. this was the scene two years ago after the university of maryland beat duke. a riot broke out and cell phone video captured what appears to be prince georges police beating a student. they arrested 28 students back then. police stepped up enforcement before the game and the campus cops are in full force. the university sent out letters

warning students not to get out of control and they say a small group may act unruly and others say the police presence is a big deterrent. >> they are ready for it. i think the students will not be stupid this time. >> reporter: the game is over. maryland lost. there are police officers all around here to make sure the folks stay under control. live in college park at the university of maryland, back to you in the studio. a man's plans to rob two guys a t a gas station went wrong when the guys turned out to be off-duty cops. it happened in ed mondayston, maryland. after the 51-year-old allegedly threatened the officers with a knife and tear gas, the two pulled out their guns. stancele is charged with attempted robbery. . thieves are anxious to the steal copper. they are ripping it off of houses while people slooep sleep inside. one local mayor woke up startled

thinking fell fell on their roof. >> reporter: these mccounty homes may look normal but the cops say something is missing. just ask phyllis, the mayor of rockville. >> my dad built this house. when he built it, he wanted to put the best thing he could in it. so naturally he put copper. >> reporter: it's been replaced but thieves stole the copper down spout from her house. >> roughly 3:00, 3:30 in the morning i heard this tremendous ra racket. what i saw was my down spout was gone. >> they say they have been swiped 26 times in bethesda, potomac and rockville. it holds 90% of its value in resale. attracting thieves all times of the day and night. some people have seen a beige, gold or bronze colored late model pickup truck in the area or in driveways.

a few times homeowners confronted the thieves only to be told they worked for a gutter company before they took off. >> this was not an inexpensive fix. >> it cost hundreds of dollars for the copper alone. >> reporter: aaron gilchrist, news 4 bethesda. . we are getting a look at the intense rescue of a caver trapped 200 feet below ground. look at these pictures. the guy got stuck in between rocks caving in the clear spring area. teams from montgomery, frederick and washington counties were called in to help get him out. it took more than four hours. >> it was pretty complex. we couldn't put a straight rope down to him. the cave changed directions and levels. there were six, seven foot drop offs they had to climb down and lift him over i. was an interest ing rescue. >> the man spent six hours last night trapped in the cave.

he got out without serious injuries. police are looking for the man who tried to rob an elementary school employee in fort washington, maryland. it happened in the middle of the school day at fort foot elementary school and forced the school to go on lockdown. the robber took off without getting any money. it is not clear whether he had a weapon. a new road block could be looming for the silver line's extension in to loudoun county because the board of supervisors is in cost-cutting mode. the majority of the board is newly elected and while most supported the project during the election, the board is looking at every financial commitment made by previous boards. they said it will take a month to cut the stations planned for loudoun county out of the budget. what you see here is being called the future of snow removal. it's a program to better inform people during snowstorms and

fairfax county is one of the test sites. jackie bensen has our report. >> reporter: it was february of 2010 when residents of the silent tree development in vienna, near tysons corner, had the sinking realization that the know plows weren't coming, at least anytime soon. they eventually took matters and shovels in to their own hands. how do they feel about a website that will allow them to see realtime progress of snowplows during the next storm. >> it will be happy if it truly does happen. i think they will probably hold their breath to make sure that it does. >> reporter: the experimental program will include 600 snow maps of neighborhoods in fairfax, prince william and loudoun county sghs it is helpful to see people and government sort of working together to get these issues resolved. maybe social media is one of those ways people are starting to get in to more of that, so -- >> reporter: people here in

silent tree say the big digout of 2010 wasn't all bad. they say it made them closer as a community. jackie bensen, news 4. it is not snow but rain that is causing big problems in parts of texas. storms pounded dallas-ft. worth last night. some communities were flooded today. there were tornados all over the state but no injuries were reported. outside tonight, our stretch of really kind of pleasant weather about to come to a close apparently. is that right, doug. >> reporter: it is. we will see shower activity during the day tomorrow. not a washout on thursday but you probably want to step outside with the umbrella. storm 4 doppler radar showing the rain to the west. having trouble reaching the ground at the atmosphere has been fairly dry. a lot of rain at 4,000 to 5,000 feet. it is making its way down here and more to the west. this is the area of rain that will make its way our way. severe weather in to mississippi and louisiana still under a

tornado watch there. i don't expect to see severe weather here. what i expect is the rain to move in. i will show you when the rain moves in and out. and plus, what's behind it for the weekend? my forecast coming up in a minute. >> thank you, doug. a virginia woman is enjoying her first thyme night of freedom after being freed from kidnappers in somalia. she was rescued last night by a team of naef s.e.a.l.s. she was captured in october along with a danish colleague. last night the president authorized a special separations force to parachute in to a camp in mogadishu. she was sent to a safe location and put on a plane to meet her family. >> basically they were out of touch with her this whole time other than little signals indirectly they would get. >> reporter: nbc has no confirmation of buchanan's current health condition. her family has not spoken publicly yet.

special forces such as s.e.a.l. team 6 will be exempt from deep budget cuts coming for the u.s. military. tomorrow defense secretary panetta will announce a plan that calls for $487 billion in cuts over 10 years. beginning in 2013, the army will be reduced by 80,000 soldiers. several weapons programs will be cut out, and the f-35 fighter jet program is expected to see production delays. it was a rare sight in congress when both sides of the aisle stood for a roaring applause today. representative gabrielle giffords handed in her resignation to john boehner causing him to shed a few tears. giffords is leaving office to concentrate on making a full recovery. she was injured in a tucson shooting that took the lives of six others. tonight gop presidential hopeful newt gingrich is aiming

if they are moon you may see say in his request to win the republican nomination. gingrich told voters that americans need to think boldly, in his words, when planning the future. he then made this pledge to voters. >> by the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon, and it will be american. >> gingrich says he wants to spend part of nasa's budget on prize money for competitions to encourage the private sector to develop space technology. during the debate on monday, mitt romney said he wanted to make space a priority. florida's primary is next tuesday. two of three bills to relax gun laws in virginia are being shelled until next year. a senate committee decided to postpone legislation to stop colleges from banning firearms on campus. it postponed a vote on a bill that would have exempted long guns and rifles bought from gun

more than 30 years after a darging museum heist, a valuable piece of art work is on its way back to france today. immigration and customs enforcement officials returned a piece from pissarro to the museum. a man snatched the work in 1981 and sold it to a gallery in texas. a lost art registry discovered it just before it was set to go to auction for $60,000. ice agents worked with french investigators for years. a local chef is planning to spend his own money to prevent drivers from getting speeding tickets near his restaurant. chef jeff's restaurant in northwest d.c. said he has received three tickets from the recently-installed camera on fox hall road. each worth 125 to $150. and he said before those he

wouldn't that feel nice? i think 49 feels nice, too. winds from the east at five miles an hour. we are seeing a lot of cloud cover. starting to see first inklings of rain showers trying to make their way in here. 43 culpeper, fredericksburg and mass trans mass trans manassas, too. a lot of this is not hitting the ground but it is trying to saturate the atmosphere and when it does we will see shower activity overnight. it is picking up rain from other radars. this is the composite. none of this is a reaching the ground and this is not the rain that i'm worried about. this is associated with a warm front that will move north. here's the rain that's making its way our way. heavy rain in louisiana, mississippi. some severe thunderstorms, too. i don't think we will see anything severe from this but we

will see rain starting tomorrow. high pressure today brought us mild weather. still going to be mild tomorrow after that warm front passes us by. the showers will be out. not an all-day rain and not talking about a washout tomorrow. the best chance will come with this area of low pressure as it passes to the north and west overnight on thursday in to friday. once it moves out of here, friday will be a nice day as far as sunshine is concerned. expect windy conditions and cooler weather to reach you on friday afternoon. take you through overnight. by 6:30 tomorrow the best chance is north of 66 in to virginia and route 50 in to maryland. frederick to the westminster and gaithersburg. throughout the afternoon not much. not expecting much in the way of rain. clouds will stick around. more shower activity during the rush hour tomorrow afternoon. here comes the heavier rain right around 6:00, 7:00, 7:30 on friday morning. that's when we could see some problem s with the rush hour. tomorrow morning, don't expect

many problems. mild start with a shower chance. 32 to 40 degrees in the city. tomorrow afternoon we will see a chance of showers pretty much all day long but not a washout. high temperatures mild in the 50s with the southeasterly wind. the next four days 56 on friday with early rain. saturday and sunday looking dry. and temperatures starting to cool off, the coldest weather comes in on sunday night and in to the day on monday. monday highs struggling to reach 40 degrees. >> thank you, doug. still to come, we will tell you what brought actress drew barrymore to georgetown. and the terps unveil the gary williams court.

some game may not mean more than others but they get more attention, right? >> it was a fantastic atmosphere at comcast center tonight. a fun night. >> and they played well for a while there. >> for a majority of the game. whether you watched or listened to it on the radio it was a fun game. maryland hosting duke for the first time on the mark tergen era. the unveiling of gary williams court. the cherry on top would have been a maryland win and the terps played tough. a silhouette of a fist pumping gary outside of comcast center. an actual first pumping jerry inside. he said it was spontaneous and he didn't practice it. there it is gary williams court. as for the game, the terps came out strong. terrell, check him out here a couple of nifty moves, slicing

and dicing his way through the duke defense. man, a nice move. >> sure is. >> puts the terps up by 8. maryland trailed by three at the break. terps down by one and he splits the defenders and hit the short jumper. he had a team high 16. maryland up 43-42 and the place is going crazy but the terps couldn't find an answer for mason. he goes reverse dunk on maryland and had a game high 23 and 12 rebounds the best game of his career. duke wins it 74-61 and duke has beaten maryland in ten of the last 11 games. it was an emotional night for everyone, especially gary williams. >> obviously, this is something special to me. it's a big thrill. when i left here in 1968, i never thought anything like this would ever be possible. i never thought i would be back here as a coach to start with. it has been a great ride.
