well, i don't think we should go to the moon. i think we should send politician up there sometimes. >> virginia is on the verge of requiring ultrasounds for every woman that wants to have an abortion. >> and rain is coming in that could cause problems in the morning. >> right in front of the white house a young woman was hit by a van. she was crossing the street. the accident still has constitution avenue closed down. jane wattrell has the details. >> reporter: reconstruction officers are here trying to find out how the young woman was struck and critically injured. it happened tonight at 17th and constitution. park police say the white van was traveling southbound on 17th street and crossed over constitution avenue when it hit the woman and pinned her under the vehicle. she was freed and taken to a

local hospital where sheer has life threatening injuries. investigators are trying to figure out whether or not the victim was in a crosswalk when the accident occurred. >> the crash happened just south of constitution avenue on 17th street. we're looking into the location of the pedestrian and ambassador of the vehicle prior to the strike to determine where the pedestrian was prior to the incident. we haven't determined whether she was in the crosswalk or not. >> the driver of the van is cooperating and did remain on the scene so no arrests have been made. we are told by park police that 17th street and constitution, constitution between 18th street and 15th street will be shut down for several more hours. reporting live in northwest, i'm jane wattrell. >> also in the district tonight, doctors are working trying to save a stabbing victim who collapsed inside a northwest rec center. the victim is described as being 17 or 18 years old.

washington. >> the white house is downplaying the so-called tiff on the tar mark between arizona governor jan brewer and president obama yesterday. we told you about it last night on news4 at 11. governor brewer seen pointing her finger at the president. brewer handed him a letter, an invitation to meet with her about immigration. that's when the president said he wasn't happy that she had called him condescending in her book. the white house described the evidence as overblown. >> in virginia new abortion restrictions are moving forward in the republican nominated johnson assembly. the senate education and health committee approved a bill that would require women to have an ultrasound before they're allowed to get an abortion. the ultrasound is meant to determine the gestational age of the fetus. the bill also requires that each patient must be offered the opportunity to see the ultrasound image or hear the fetal heart beat this women,

lights to protect evidence at a scene where a bodiy was found i a well. police received an anonymous phone call. removing the body from a 20-foot deep well will be a process. >> we have to excavate around the well. it requires a lot of equipment and manpower. there is is a potential for a well collapse. >> reporter: also called to the scene, alexandria police detectives. they're investigating the disappearance of community activist lenny harris. his wallet was found on this bridge a few miles away. his stolen credit card was used in prince georges county. neighbors on old fort road say the discovery leaves them concerned. >> i just have to be positive. i just buy the house a couple of months ago. you know, i can just wish, you know, it doesn't happen again, you know.

>> reporter: one long-time neighbor told me that that unoccupied house has been the frequent target of illegal dumping and other suspicious activity. reporting live, jackie bensen, news 4. >> thank you, jackie. >> a police officer shot a man in northeast washington tonight. it happened on pond street about 8:00. it's not clear what led to that shooting. the man who was shot was taken to a hospital. he's expected to survive the officer was not injured. >> an arrest in the case of an elderly woman scammed. investigators claimed mccorkel asked an 84-year-old woman to drive her and her children to a bank to cash a check earlier this month. once at the bank, the victim of the ordered to withdraw money from her own account. she was identified from surveillance video and an anonymous tip from

unmasked, saw flashes as he fired his gun at the museum. he was arrested last june at the arlington national cemetery. he was a marine reservist at the time. under the plea deal, he'll go to jail for 25 years. you can see that entire video right now on nbcwashington.com. >> tomorrow the woman convicted of killing a co-worker at the bethesda lul lul lululemon store will learn her fate. tomorrow a judge will decide if she should get parole. her parents argue she has a true, caring nature and can be an asset from society. the father of the victim in the murder says he doesn't want his family to ever have to endure parole hearings. >> a doctor subjected to racial slurs by virginia state police over the summer came face to face with one of the troopers today. dr. maria pereira was arrested after a minor accident near the pentagon back in july.

she crashed into a set of gates blocking the hov lane on 395. a dash cam from the trooper's cruiser showed he's used racial slurs and ethnic jokes before arresting her. >> she probably works at taco bell. burrito doctor? yeah. >> it's very difficult to trust people now, especially the police, you know. i have nightmares almost every night. >> prosecutors reduced his charges to a $50 fine. now the doctor says she's considering a civil suit against state police. the trooper involved would not comment outside the court. he remains on regular patrol duty. >> coming up tonight, some video just seconds after three buildings collapse as people literally are running for their lives. >> a plan to change the taxi system in washington that could have our streets looking a lot more like new york. >> we'll tell you why a school is banning uggs and other boots

earlier. >> weird. >> last year, kind of a cold winter. one day at 60 degrees or better. this year we've seen 12 at 60 degrees or better and tomorrow could be number 13. and that 60 degree temperature could come before 9:00 in the morning. how about that. take a look outside now where we are looking at cloudy sky bus no rain really out there. a few areas of shower activity but most of us are on the dry side. it is is a beautiful night in january here in the district and all around the metro area. 55 degrees the high temperature earlier today. low this morning was at 40 degrees and, yes, i do think we will see rising temperatures overnight tonight. currently 51 degrees at the airport with winds out of the south and that's the key. so southerly winds will help to row dues those temperatures rising overnight. look at the temperatures in fredericksbu fredericksburg. but the warm front still not making it to the north, 37 in

hagerstown, a 22-degree temperature difference between those two cities. look at virginia beach, 63 now and that warmer air will continue to filter on in here overnight tonight. a few showers right along i-70 here. once you hit frederick over toward hagerstown, a few there, but that is it. these are very light. overnight tonight we'll see the shower activity increase. right now it's still well to the west and down to the south. as we move on down to the south, we're looking at a lot of yellows, a lot of oranges here and these do have some thunder associated with them. this storm will move to our east. as it does, it may produce showers and maybe thunderstorms, maybe a couple of strong storms tomorrow. i don't expect any severe but we could see strong thunderstorms with locally heavy winds, talking about winds up to 30, 40, maybe 50 miles an hour south of washington. by tomorrow morning here's that frontal boundary and right along that front, say 7, 8, 9, 10:00 in the morning we will see the

potential for heavier rain, some heavier downpours and stronger winds with that -- with the possibility of some of those storms. southern maryland, you're going to be the ones on lookout for this. you have the best chance of seeing some of those storms to the north and west, just the rain. then behind it everybody gets on the windy side. we clear out and see sunshine but we will see the wind during the day tomorrow and right on in through the day on wednesday, too, as -- or rather on saturday as another cold front moves on through the area. so tomorrow morning waking up to some very warm temperatures. it could be rather windy with rain likely tomorrow. as we move on to the next couple of days, the temperatures will go down but not much. 53 on saturday, 51 on sunday. we will get cold on monday with a high of around 39 degrees and then right back up. >> unusual. >> when a winter. >> still to come together, a bank robber shoots himself in bank [ male announcer ]elf in citibank's new app for ipad

this guy down in brazil who has been locked up, he was trying to rob a bank. his own fault he got caught. he was standing outside the bank as the lookout while two other robbers went inside. apparently the guy got a bit nervous. when he lowered one of his two guns, fool shot himself in the foot. it was all caught on the bank surveillance camera.

[ laughter ] police arrested the guy and a hospital near -- at a hospital near the bank. they haven't found his acome polices yet. >> that's embarrassing. this brings new meaning to drunk at the wheel. "wheel of fortune" host he and van a white used to get tipsy during their dinner break before taping their final show of the night. he said they'd go to a local mexican restaurant and knock back a few drinks.
