good evening, everyone. welcome to news4 at 6:00. we are following breaking news right now out of fairfax. police say a man has barricaded himself in a parking garage for the fairfax county courthouse. this is on page avenue. >> reporter: we're just a few blocks away from the scene, hopefully we'll be there quite shortly. there is a large police presence around the courthouse from this

barricade situation. police right now are not providing a lot of details about what is happening at this point, but i have been able to confirm in a police spokesperson that there's a person on the top of that parking garage, of the fairfax county courthouse. this happen right around 3:30 in the afternoon. and that turned into a barricade situation where police are there trying to figure out what is going on with this individual, trying to get this person out of there safely. we have heard reports that the man may be armed with a gun and we're trying to get that confirmed with police. again, i spoke to a police spokesperson on the phone, but when i asked about whether the person was armed in particular detail, he said he was still working to try to get those details. but there were initial reports that this person may be armed. we have not received any reports that anyone else is involved in this. it appears to be a single individual at this point, again, on the top of the parking

garage, as it was described to me. and the police have created a barricade around the situation and they're trying to talk to him and trying to get this thing resolved safely. when i get there and get some information, i'll get right back to you. we are also following a developing story out of ft. washington, maryland. that's where a body was found earlier this week. after seven hours police investigators were able to dig that body up. prince george's police will turn that body over to the medical examiner and they expect they will have an identification by tomorrow at some point. on thursday police from alexandr alexandria, virginia. this man's car was found in october and so there's some speculation this body might be his. four people are dead after a

crash in anne arundel county. police say three people were in a vehicle that was going the wrong way when it hit another driver head on. >> at this point the crash team is doing a thorough investigation. it is not evident yet if alcohol and/or speed were factors in the crash. >> two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old were killed. police had to notify the fourth victim's family before releasing a name. we turn now to decision 2012. gop candidates making their final push for votes this weekend in florida. virginia governor bob mcdonnell on the campaign trail with mitt romney today. romney is pulling ahead of newt gingrich in today's primary. >> if you do it, we will win on tuesday. >> reporter: we have three days

open, going through that jumble one by one. but the victims remain hidden. wrenching for the families waiting these two weeks. on the american couple's facebook, needle in a haystack. 17 tanks, heating them, pumping fuel out and sea water in to keep the massive wreck stable. >> there might be some -- these are workable. the only problem we can have is the rough sea and the marine conditions which could be against us, but that's part of the game. >> reporter: another phase away from here has also begun. there's a compensation plan of about $15,000 each plus travel and trip expenses.

festivities included traditional chinese dragon dancing and crafts for the kids. this is the chinese year 4710 and it is the year of the dragon. a woman who made history at the police department is leaving after three decades on the force. she is the first african-american female to retire. over the years she's taken on a lot of different roles, she's been a school resource officer and today she was recognized for her commitment to the community and inspiring the next generation of police officers. >> it was a great journey, i loved every bit of it and had a

lot of fun, the camaraderie was outstanding, i had a lot of fun. >> mack evans says she's proud to be leaving a more diverse department than when she signed on. she said it was a tough goodbye but now it was time for some r & r. chef jeff, chef tracey of chef jeff hired a sign spinner to warn drivers about a recently installed camera. a sign telling drivers to slow down before they get to that camera. it could save drivers $150. that sign spinner will be there for about a week. next on news4 at

frustrating morning for a lot of bruce springstein fans in our area. tickets for his april 1st show at the verizon center went on sale at 10:00. and they sold out quickly. a class-action lawsuit and an investigation by the federal trade commission. thousands started the weekend out by taking a very chilly dip in the chesapeake bay, and some of them are doing it not just once, but 24 times

in 24 hours. and they're hoping to raise a lot of money for a very good cause. >> reporter: a beautiful sunrise over the chesapeake bay. as the sun came up, the superplungers kept plunging. 50 men and women and many special olympic athletes plunged into the cold waters of the chesapeake bay every hour for 24 hours, with all the proceeds going to special olympics. it's all about the athletes. >> a lot of people don't realize that we are hosting competitions and events all year long. so athletes in every neighborhood around this state are training and competing and just getting the opportunity to be the best they can be every day of the year as a result of this event. >> reporter: by mid morning the park was full as people came to take the polar pear plunge. >> this is the 167th annual polar bear plunge and it's not just about plunging. this is a family event.

>> reporter: there was a wood worker, people were hula hooping. there was something for everyone. >> my friends and i use this as an opportunity to get together and support a good cause. >> the opportunity for our coun company to be able to give people a hot beverage when they get out of the water. >> it benefits the special olympics. >> reporter: then as 1:00 p.m. it was plunge time as thousands rushed into the bay. the maryland state police polar bear plunge. there is nothing like it. >> this is so amazing. i am so impressed that all of these people came out to help raise money for -- and awareness for a special olympic athletes. >> it's just an awesome experience, it brings joy to my heart that the community are coming out and supporting us. it makes me so happy that people

aren't all that cold, a little bit of a bundle up factor nonetheless. 45 in maryland, 44 in marchberg. temperatures will dropback down into the low and mid 40s by 11:00 this evening, under a partly to at times mostly cloudy sky. nothing going on right around the immediate washington area, a little sprinkle here and a few dying sprinkles out on the coast of delaware as well. most of the moisture with this little weather front has bypassed us well to the north. a cold front is coming through tonight, the winds will be out of the west/northwest for the rest of the night, and it's going to stay breezy as well. definitely going to need your scarf and your mittens out there. tomorrow a decent amount of sunshine. a fast weather front is going to race through here tomorrow night. might bring a sprinkle or two, that's about it. and the cold air that is behind

that is only going to stick around for about 24 to 36 hours. this is tomorrow, notice hardly anything zipping on by here, so no more than a passing snowflake late tomorrow night or early monday morning. tomorrow partly cloudy, breezy and chilly. then tomorrow a mix of clouds and sunshine, might pick up a sprinkle late in the day, probably not until after the sun goes down and it will still be relatively mild by january standards. the chilliest day out of the next seven will be monday, but then look at that, tuesday and wednesday back up near 60 degrees again. wednesday is february 1, 612. >>

we're staying on top of breaking news in fairfax right now, police say a man barricaded himself in a parking garage across from the courthouse on page avenue. darcy spencer is live with the latest. >> reporter: we're on judicial drive, we're just down the street fwra the fairfax courthouse. if you look up the street, that's where the investigation is taking place. i was able to talk to a fairfax police spokesperson who said they received a call right around 3: 30 from a man threatening to harm himself. he was apparently in a vehicle at the top of the parking garage at the fairfax county courthouse.

that's a large judicial complex. police will not say any additional details about this. there was a call that came in, they have cordoned off the area, this is a barricade situation. all the roads leading into the journal complex have been blocked off. >> let's get to sports. local sports in action. the georgetown hoyas begin to be one of the biggest surprises in college basketball. remember, preseason polls had them tenth in the big east. now at the end of january, they barely beat rutgers just by two points. they proved you can't sleep on any team in the big east. the panthers play well at the peterson event center. 11 and 0, pate goes inside.

jam on the other end. just like that virginia tech is within 7. but the hokies could not find an answer for terrell. he nails the second of back to back threes. gives maryland a 12 point lead. later under three, watch stoglyn again. marilyn wins 73-69, terps are now 3 and 3 in the acc. a little caa action, paul huet and george mason. hitchens nails the three from the wing, humpity dumps 27 on mason. jmu down two at the break. but mason starts the second half on fire.

latrell goes up and under for two of his points. six minutes to go now. mason up just three, who do the patriots go to when they need a big basket? ryan pearson, the big man knocks down the huge three and pearson had a game high 27 points, george mason wins 89-79. in the a-10, tony taylor and g.w. taking it to the bronx. under 30 seconds to play, g.w. down four. a shot blocked. fordham going for it on the other end. but tony taylor comes up with the steal. this is a crazy sequence. taylor brings it back up the floor. a huge bucket and the colonials are down just one. less than 10 seconds to go, ignore the scoreboard, it's wrong on your screen, g.w. was down just three here.
