district, but so far no arrests. good afternoon, everybody. >> i'm pat lawson muse. a no camping law is now in effect for the two occupy d.c. camps in downtown washington. that means anybody who violates that rule can be arrested. >> but so far there have been no major scuffles or arrests. police are pretty much just waiting to see if the demonstrators comply. when the rule went into effect at noon today protesters draped a large, blue tarp here over the statue at mcpherson square. protesters have also set up a camp at the nearby plaza. some people have left the sites but others vow to stay. cities across the country are struggling with how to handle the encampments. >> reporter: by high noon monday eviction notices had been posted on occupy demonstrations at two parks near the white house. a no camping rule is now in effect. tents could stay but no more living in them by protesters, some of whom remain defiant.

>> we'll keep doing what we do. i have no intentions of leaving. this is an occupation. >> cops start coming we have people that will immediately start blowing whistles, start shouting and i'll wake up then. >> reporter: many did leave and cleared out tents they've occupied since october. >> i'm going to stick around. i think we are all going to stick around and do absolutely what we have been doing in the first place and peacefully protest. >> reporter: occupy demonstrators in charlotte face similar eviction with one big difference. about four dozen tents were ordered removed, too. >> let us stay! >> reporter: a dozen occupy des moines protesters were arrested late sunday night after they failed to leave the capitol grounds after it closed. while the occupy oakland demonstration turned violent saturday, police used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse about 2,000 protesters when they started throwing bottles at officers. occupiers eventually ended up at city hall. >> they broke in briefly at city hall and vandalized some of the

art in city hall. >> reporter: 400 demonstrators were arrested during a night of skirmishes with police. back in d.c., police braced for at least confrontation tonight with those who vowed that regardless of rules they planned to stay put. our winter rollercoaster ride continues. >> we're about to climb again but before we do, do we have another chilly night ahead? >> a little chilly but not too bad. out there today definitely seasonable temperatures. a lot of sunshine today, too. we've got some clouds though that are approaching the area. take a look at the satellite and radar. you can see the clear skies early this afternoon at 2:30. some of that cloud cover has started rolling into the area out of western maryland right now. so meanwhile for the evening i think a lot of the cloud cover is going to stay just north of the area for the evening and for the overnight. our temperature now at 48

degrees with a west wind at 8 miles per hour. around the area we've got 45 degrees in leesburg, virginia, 48 degrees in manassas, warranton, falls church, toochlt 49 in waldorf and 48 degrees right in d.c. our cool spot up in olney at 43. your good night forecast, we'll be dropping down to the low 40s by 7:00. most of the clouds north and west will stay up to the north. so chilly night for us as we head down to the mid and upper 30s by 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. your fast forecast then for the overnight period again, those clouds stay north. we're going to look at a clear evening and a chilly evening. the warm air comes back tomorrow. we'll talk about how warm coming up in a couple minutes and talk about any chances that we've got this week of seeing any rain. sorry, folks. not snow. just rain for us. that in a few. >> thanks, veronica. a huge fire gutted a warehouse building today in southern california. it broke out this morning in

paramount, california, and sent huge flames shooting into the sky. it took more than a hundred firefighters to put the blaze out. no one was injured. in florida tonight, newt gingrich is fighting to save his bid for the republican nomination, but mitt romney is ahead in polls for tomorrow's primary and he's taken the gloves off. steve handelsman is in tampa now with the latest. >> reporter: mitt romney is sounding like he's already won florida and the nomination. >> people have realized if they want to see change in washington, you can't just elect the same people to take different chairs. >> reporter: the half million floridians have voted early. romney leads, 2-1, in exit polls. at a cigar bar in tampa today was bill rexford who voted early last week for newt gingrich. now he regrets it. >> i don't know if it's the tv ads romney put out or whatever but i just don't think that he -- gingrich can really take the votes needed to win the

presidential election. >> reporter: gingrich is being out spent, 4-1, on florida tv, slammed by pro romney attack ads. >> 196 house republicans that voted to reprimand newt gingrich when he was speaker. >> reporter: at a romney rally today a gingrich ad man vented to reporters. >> well when you dump you know $15 million to $20 million worth of false advertising it's going to happen. >> reporter: romney claims gingrich was on him in south carolina and won. >> there is no question politics ain't bean bags so we've made sure our message is out loud and clear. >> reporter: staunch conservatives aren't impressed. >> i'm looking for something that is going to help small business and mitt romney i don't think has been able to do that. >> i could feel it the last three days. >> reporter: and newt gingrich claims he is researching. >> we have closed the gap despite all of the ads and all of the falsehoods. we're within five points. >> reporter: in fact, today's polls do show a closer race. gingrich vows he is in this

until the republican convention, which incidentally will be held in this city. romney said that's what politicians always claim, when they know they're going to lose. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, tampa, florida. tonight president obama is hosting a post state of the union conversation on google plus, the social networking site from google of course. for the past week americans from across the country have submitted their questions via youtube. the president will answer some of those questions at 5:30 tonight for about 45 minutes. the president will also chat directly with people online. tonight opponents of same sex marriage legislation in maryland will gather outside the state house in annapolis and hold a rally beginning at 6:00. a similar bill failed in the house last year but it's back on the agenda this year with backing from governor martin o'malley. lawmakers are scheduled to hold a hearing on the bill during tomorrow's general assembly session. metro service is back to normal this afternoon after workers found cracked rails

along the blue and orange lines. this morning metro reported cracked rails near the roslyn metro station. while crews worked to repair them trains had to single track between foggy bottom and boston and between foggy bottom and arlington cemetery. crews will make permanent repairs after the system closes tonight. temporary repairs were completed around noon. federal regulators have stepped up their investigation into air bags on the jeep liberty. 50 people have now reported they were hurt when the air bags inflated by surprise without a crash. more than 387,000 jeep libertys from 2002 and 2003 are involved in this investigation, which started back in september. regulators say the air bag computer may fail due to an electrical voltage spike. on wall street the three major markets were down slightly this monday when the closing bell sounded just a few minutes ago.

the dow was off 131 points this morning because of concerns about a debt deal in greece. however, stocks rallied and ended the day just seven points higher at 12,653. the nasdaq fell 4 1/2 points to 2811. and the s&p 500 was down three points to close at 1313. six days and counting now until super bowl sunday. we've got it. patriots and giants now in indianapolis. news 4's dan hellie is there, too. >> reporter: hey, jim, hey, pat. here in lovely downtown indy 45 degrees so actually the weather much better than we expected. it's still early during super bowl week. you could see here we have a lot of colts fans here in town. we have yet to see the patriots and the giants fans rolling in but this is the center of the city, the center of indianapolis, the center of marian county. it's war memorial circle.

"the help" took a bunch of prizes last night. any surprises? >> the best ensemble win was great for them and is more of a, sort of the help train rolling into the oscars is now steaming.

octavia spencer another win there. viola davis a lot of people thought she'd win the gold. it went to meryl streep instead. viola davis goes into the oscars very strong as well. great night for "the help." they could win best picture too there. it's got the most momentum for sure. >> best actor for "descendants?" >> yeah. george clooney, i thought that was his night. the oscars love george so don't rule him out there but now the best actor picture is very exciting. the academy is another place -- "the artist" could win best picture. i can see that working out and then clooney maybe best actor because there are two things the academy loves. one, george clooney and, two, you know, a real artsy fartsy film like "the artist" says we are the academy more than anything else. maybe both. maybe that's how it'll break down. also, billy, a survival thriller was number one for movie goers.

how about that? >> yeah. unbelievable. liam neeson. look, he did great with "ransom." any time he does something very suspenseful and action packed, people seem to respond. he did "taken" as well. that was tops. so a big weekend for liam and no surprise there for sure. >> what you got, billy, coming up on "access hollywood" tonight? >> heidi klum and seal. you know, listen, my kids go to school with heidi and seal's kids so i see them all the time up at school. not only do i see them in the professional realm but up at school and they really are such a close pair. everyone was stunned by that. i talked to seal for 20 minutes about what's going on there and because of the personal relationship we could get right in there and tonight we talk about the kids and, you know, how they're going to tell them if they've told them and what kind of, you know, how they factor into all this. it's touchy stuff but a good interview tonight with seal. >> we'll look forward to that. all right. an exclusive. see you on "access hollywood"

the north and west with a few high clouds. those have been making their way just north of the area. a little bit of a wind chill, too, at 44 with that 8 mile per hour wind. other locations take a look north. 43 degrees mount airy. frederick up in northern maryland. 43 only in gaithersburg. germantown. 48 into d.c. then we've got the low 50s just south around waldorf, around culpepper. fredericksburg and stafford, virginia. not too bad at all. tonight we'll drop down below freezing but not by much in some of the outlying suburbs. 30 there in frederick. leesburg 29. 28 manassas. right at freezing in fredericksburg. so not that bad of a start again for tomorrow morning. we're talking about clouds that are going to be drifting through with this little system here. it'll skirt just to the north of the area overnight. right now snow coming in to buffalo again, toronto, toorks snow. and a little mix of rain and snow around cleveland. our best chance of rain this week is going to come very late wednesday night probably

starting around thursday morning and pretty wet. the one day out of the week will be thursday from a system organizing in the northern plains where you can see a little rain there. as i said a mild week for us. going to step out of the way in a minute. we're at 48. look at raleigh, north carolina. close to 60 degrees now. you're likely to top out over 60. st. louis, missouri at 66. 67 degrees in jackson, mississippi right now. so all off to the west and down through the south temperatures are very mild. that's what we'll see the next two days. very mild air over us. overnight the clouds will stay north. we've got a chilly overnight. we are back to sunshine for tuesday and again a major warmup out ahead of the next weather system. you can see the southwesterly flow there. there is your green and that is the rain. staying dry. the bulk of wednesday. that rain probably not developing until very, very late wednesday night. thursday is looking wet. 38 to 44 degrees. light breezes under clear skies and cool conditions for your evening. and then for tomorrow morning,

really got the nurses talking. >> it's amazing that we have a baby actually that big. >> 13 pounds 12 ounces. what's more amazing is that asher is au natural meaning no surgery and no drugs for joshua's wife, not even an epidural during delivery. >> whenever anybody hears about it they're like oh, my word. she's got to be a hero. >> reporter: natural delivery carries certain risks but kendall took it in stride. >> she is doing very well. >> reporter: no problems for this baby born nine days past due despite his large size. >> everyone always like double tabs wh takes when they see him but for us it's pretty standard and it wasn't much worse than probably most people's. yeah. >> just have two that had absolutely no issues is just, we're definitely very blessed that way. >> reporter: i have to ask just because women are going to want to know, what did it feel like? can you describe it?

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here's what's making news at 4:30. a no camping law is now in effect at the two occupied d.c. camps at freedom plaza and mcpherson square. under this law the tents can stay as a symbol of the movement but protesters cannot live or sleep in them. if they do, they can be arrested. when the law went into effect at noon today protesters draped the large blue tarp over the statue at mcpherson square. meanwhile in florida there is an all out battle in the republican presidential contest. mitt romney has taken off the gloves and he's pounding newt gingrich with a barrage of attack ads ahead of tomorrow's

primary. the latest polls suggest romney remains in the lead but gingrich is closing the gap. >> reporter: trains were single tracking on metro's blue and orange lines earlier today after workers found cracks on the rails. the problem was centered near the roslyn station. crews finished a temporary fix around noon and will make permanent repairs after the system closes tonight. a rally on wall street after early concerns about a debt deal in greece. stocks dropped sharply after the opening bell but climbed their way back up before ending the day slightly down. the dow lost seven points, the nasdaq fell four and a half, and the s&p 500 was off three points. search operations resume this morning off the coast of italy on the capsized coast only to be halted again later in the day. workers were pulled off the ship all day sunday due to poor weather conditions and some movement on the ship. >> rescuers are still searching for the bodies of more than a dozen people, including a retired couple from minnesota.

nbc's duncan golistani has the latest. >> reporter: recovery operations were again interrupted today because of bad weather. experts monitoring the ship's stability said it moved three and a half centimeters overnight on sunday because of high winds and waves. it comes as officials warned it could take up to ten months to remove the liner from the sea bed. there are still 16 people missing as well as thousands of gallons of fuel that need removing. rough seas keep stopping the efforts for both. high waves are also bringing garbage and debris off the concordia worrying locals about the long-term effects on the environment. >> translator: let's hope we are able to solve everything without pollution. that's the main worry. that is the serious worry we have. >> reporter: that calling for an island wide meeting to discuss how to protect the area from pollution. duncan golistani nbc news

london. police in maine are disclosing the nature of troubling evidence they found in the first days of a search for a missing toddler. ayla reynolds is almost 2 years old. she's been missing now for six weeks. her father says someone abducted her in the middle of the night but police say they found blood in the basement of his home, more blood than a small cup would produce. ayla's mother was in drug rehab when her daughter disappeared. now she wants some answers. >> my reaction is i'm still trying to concept the fact that blood was found of my daughter's. that's my reaction. >> what we have been told is obviously someone came into that home, grabbed ayla, and vanished in the middle of the night. but at this point, we have not found one piece of evidence to back that up. >> police haven't named a suspect but say they suspect foul play. the focus of their investigation has been the last couple to see ayla, her father, his

girlfriend, and his sister. a dentist who used paper clips when performing root canals will spend a year in jail. michael clair was sentenced today by a judge in massachusetts after pleading guilty to medicaid fraud. he is also charged with assault, battery, and illegally prescribing medications. his license was revoked in 2006. he now lives in crofton, maryland. a piece of dried glue apparently resembles a famous cartoon character. this piece of glue looks like homer simpson and the owner is getting a major pay day. chris herbert of the united kingdom sold the glue glob online for a little more than $239,000. he says he can't believe someone would spend that sort of money on a glue glob but he is not complaining. >> actor nicholas cage is now immortalized in wax. the star of the upcoming "ghost rider" sequel unveiled his new

wax statue at a paris museum sunday night. the statue now lives among those of other celebrities including michael jackson and marilyn monroe. cage said he found it weird to look at the statue because it looks so much like him. >> totally weird to be looking at that. now he has boots on so he's a little taller. another inch because of the heefl the boheel of the boot. i can't look too long because i'm afraid it's going to turn and say something. >> bears quite a striking likeness doesn't it? nick cage's new movie "ghost rider spirit avengeance" will open in mid february. a little taller than the real nick. get ready for the next new and exotic thing in the world of produce. it is a black tomato known as the black galaxy. it was developed by an israeli company, and scientists say the color is the result of a special pigment derived from blueberries and introduced into the new species. the tomato is said to have a

a new drug to treat the most common form of skin cancer will be on the market in just a matter of weeks. earlier today the food and drug administration approved a once a day pill called aroveg for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma. typical treatments include freezing or surgically removing the cancer. it's intended for patients who aren't candidates for surgery or whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body. it's made by the drug company genentech. it says trials show the drug shrank carcinomas in 43% of patients with localized cancer and 30% of patients whose cancer had metastasized. with super bowl xlv just around the corner, are you stressing a little over what to serve at your party? we've got just the help for you.

president obama is moving to help military familiar lais just to changes brought about by serious injury or deployment. today michelle obama announced a proposal to extend the familiar lane medical leave act which allows employees to take unpaid leave for certain medical or family reasons. the initiative creates a special 26-week leave for the care givers of seriously injured veterans who served within the past five years. there are also provisions to help the families of troops who deploy on short notice or come home for a break. the proposals will be open to comment for 60 days at the department of labor website. there will be a lot of laboring going on in a town in central england. thousands will be racing this weekend in the 25th annual tough guy race. this is billed as the toughest race in the world. contestants wind their way through an eight-mile-long obstacle course that includes barbed wire, thick mud, a

several dozen high school students who applied to vasser college in new york thought they'd gotten in. then hours later they found out it was all a mistake. >> reporter: when mary hanley logged on to check her acceptance status at vasser college on friday the news was great. at least in the beginning. >> 4:00 i logon. it says dear mary you're in. i called my mom. i called all my friends, updated my facebook. it was a good old time. >> reporter: mary was caught in a computer glitch. vasser college says for 30 minutes 122 early decision applicants were told they had been accepted in the school. in reality 76 had been rejected and mary was one of them. >> before my mom got home i went back on so i could show her and then it was like you've been
