nbcwashington.com starting at 8:00 tonight. now to a developing story in prince georges county, there's been an arrest in the murder of lenny harris, a community activist who disappeared several months ago. the break in the case seems to have come last week, when an anonymous tip led police to harris' body at the bottom of a well. >> reporter: police did make one arrest, but they also made it clear, additional arrests will happen possibly as early as today. the motive for the killing was robbery. police also said the man in custody for this crime has confe confessed. >> prince georges county police have charged linwood johns with the murder of lenny harris. >> the motive in the murder is robbery. we have recovers what we believe to be the murder weapon. >> reporter: police would not say what led them to johnson,

but the arrest comes just five days after investigators got an anonymous tip that the body was in a well on old fort road in washington. harris' remains were found at the bottom of the well. the medical examiner confirmed sunday that the remains belong to lenny harris. the suspect has admitted to the crime p. >> mr. linwood johnson gave a full written and verbal confession to detectives just a few hours ago. >> reporter: harris was last scene september 21st at an alexandria rec center. his phone was found on the wilson bridge. police previously released this surveillance photo of a man using harris' credit card at an atm. police would not say if that's the same man in custody. but they did say lenny harris knew his killer. >> regarding the relationship between the person who's been

tonight crews are scaling back the search for rescuers, because conditions have gotten too dangerous for divers. the costa concordia hit a reef more than two weeks ago, 17 people were killed, 15 others are still unaccounted for. the ship contains thousands of gallons of oil. there are growing fears it could spill. tonight we're hearing the 911 calls from a deadly pileup on the florida highway. the crash was triggered by fog and smoke from a brushfire. now there's serious questions about why the road was even open. >> reporter: heavy smoke from a

wildfire mixed with fog led to the horrific string of accidents in which about 20 cars and trucks slammed into each other, some catching fire. the pileups occurred in the pitch dark around 4:00 a.m. sunday. terrified callers described one crash after the other. >> oh, my god. oh! oh, my god, what is going on? >> okay, we are getting help out there, okay? >> oh, my goodness. >> how many vehicles have been involved that you have seen so far? >> we cannot see, ma'am. this is the third one already. >> a few minutes later, the same car described many more crashes as cars and trucks began to stack up on the highway 37. >> oh, my god. >> how many vehicles? >> yes, ma'am? >> was that another one? >> yes, ma'am. >> okay, how many vehicles now? >> 16. >> okay. do you see any fire? do you see anything like that? >> no fire, we can't see. we can hardly even see the

hazards. >> reporter: steven camp survived being hit twice and says he saw another driver get killed. >> it almost looked like a terrorist attack, can you just see the pain and uncertainty and despair everybody has on their face. >> it's impossible to see. the haze is -- the smoke is very thick. >> reporter: as firefighters worked to extinguish still burning hotspots from the fire, the florida highway patrol faced serious questions about why the fog and smokey highway was open sunday morning, after being closed because of poor conditions earlier that day. >> the supervisor determined the conditions were improving and continued to monitor the roadway. based on the observations of the troopers on the scene. fhp made the decision to open the roadway. >> along with the crash investigation, officials are trying to determine what caused the wildfire and whether it was arson. >> that was mark potter reporting from florida. the governor of that state is

i-70 as it makes its way our way, we will see a chance for showers early tomorrow morning. new york at 56. philly at 58. roanoke at 62. and i think we're going to see similar numbers during the day tomorrow. we saw the warm air today with the sunshine, tomorrow, here comes the frontal boundary, a few showers out ahead of that front tomorrow morning, in the afternoon, we'll be on the warm side, we'll see partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. we'll see sunshine out there. we'll watch that area of low pressure on thursday. it will pass to our south, that's where the best chance of rain is going to be. i don't expect a lot of rain on thursday, everybody seeing a chance of rain thursday afternoon and behind it on friday, cool, but not cold for sure. we'll be above average as we end the weekend this evening mostly clear. 55 dropping down to about 50 degrees around 9:00.

hours of january 22nd. the victim, lance corporal jake aaron hill was in a 7-eleven in crystal city. he got into an argument with another customer. the argument spilled outside, police say that cook's boyfriend hit hill in the head with a metal club. cook and dawkins are charged with malicious wounding. the suspects accuse hill with a racial remark. he was nominated for a silver star for his valor in combat after losing his leg. a moosing in fairfax county will have to rebuild after the new house of worship was able to open. the mosque was vandalized last night. someone threw rocks and other debris through dozens of custom made windows. the mosque was scheduled to open at the end of the february. >> it's very sad.

both polls show mitt romney with the commanding lead. newt gingrich appears to be trying to find a way forward. this winner take all primary is worth 50 delegates. police in prince georges county made an arrest in the murder of lenny harris. linwood johnson confessed to killing him last september. he had been shot to death. investigators say the motive in that murder was robbery. a man who says he's tired of watching protesters deface mcpherson square took matters into his own hands bring cutting some of the cords that held up the tent of dreams. protesters confronted him and police intervened taking him away. there's no word on whether any charges will be filed. here's doug with a check on our forecast. >> beautiful day out there today.

could increase to 18 cents or more by year three. the proposal will be formally introduced shortly after tomorrow's state of the state address. a limit on guns in virginia may soon be a thing of the past. the state house has given approval appealing the one handgun a month law. those in favor of the appeal say a national system of background checks on gun buyers makes the bill unnecessary. police in fairfax county investigating an abduction sunday night in the 4100 block of elmwood street. the man with a weapon grabbed a 37-year-old woman while she was walking and tried to sexually assault her. former prince georges county executive jack johnsen will report to prison two weeks later than expected. last year he pleaded guilty to

charges. he was scheduled to turning himself in this friday, but the federal bureau of prisons says it has not finalized plans for johnson. he could be heading to a federal prison in north carolina. that's where bernie madoff is being held. johnson is expected to report to prison february 18th. a deer smashed through the window of a washington highlands library in southwest causing a commotion there. tom sherwood has our report. >> reporter: just before the normally quiet 1:00 opening of the library, there was a crash. >> looked down the hall, and i'm like, what is that? a deer was laid out across the floor. he got up, he started charging back here, so we ran into the workroom and closed the door and locked ourselves in the workroom. we were in there the majority of the time, we could hear him

it's time we go back to indianapolis. are we to understand that while vance was strolling around the football field taking in the silliness of media day, you were stalking to some athletes? >> we were trying to get serious. you know, you have to enter media day with an open mind. because there is so much nonsense going on, isn't there? >> there really is. it's not about the players at all, it's about the media. and the focus on media day is about the media, but you did get a chance to actually talk a little bit of football. >> yeah, we did. we had to talk to a couple guys. i can't promise you that we learned anything new, especially from the patriots, they don't reveal a lot. there was some football being talked about, as the focus, at least from my perspective for a few minutes was on the media.

on the players. the patriots were first up for media day. we didn't learn too much from the normally tight-lipped pats, 7,000 fans were here. the first time fans have paid to watch the media ask questions. some of the folks brought the whole family, upwards of 5,000 media members were here today. everybody was out there checking out the players. they were listening to the interviews over headsets, so they were cheering depending on what answers the blairs gave. even the ones who were not rooting for eli couldn't help but root for him when he was talking about being in indianapolis. >> i mean, look at this, how could you ever take this for granted? this is pretty cool to think as a kid growing up, a bunch of people would come and watch you play a football game. we love to play the game, we love to be out here, we love to
