tonight a resounding win for mitt romney in florida. now the question is what's next for newt gingrich?

electability seems to be the key factor for voters. >> examine it appears a bombardment of advertising pushed romney over the top with 46% of the vote. steve live in tampa. steve? >> mitt romney figures he has a better chance now to be the gop nominee after his convincing victory tonight in this huge state. it's the biggest primary win so far. >> florida, you're the best. >> reporter: mitt romney celebrated in tampa, site of the republican convention, and showed off how he would take on barack obama if he's the nominee. >> mr. president, you were elected to lead. you chose to follow. and now it's time for you to get out of the way. [ applause ] >> reporter: just ten days ago, romney badly lost south carolina to newt gingrich. he came to florida to fight the former speaker and did in two debates and 3200 tv ads, almost every one attacking gingrich.

>> newt attacks because he has more baggage. >> reporter: as they voted today, many questioned gingrich's character. he lost big by 14 points, but gingrich's signs tonight read, 46 states to go. >> we are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in tampa as the nominee in august. >> reporter: rick santorum says gingrich blew his chance, santorum staying in. ron paul, too. romney said, that's okay. >> the opponents in the other party have been watching and they like to comfort themselves with the thought that a competitive campaign will leave us divided and weak. but i've got news for them. a competitive primary does not divide us, it prepares us, and we will win. >> reporter: florida delegates are not divided. romney wins all 50. now there is a month-long break before the next big state primary. it's time for these candidates to regroup and refinance if they

can. live from tampa, florida, i'm steve handelsman reporting. now back to you. >> thanks to steve, and as he mentioned, the gop presidential race moves on to four other states over the next week. nevada is holding caucuses on saturday, maine officially begins caucuses on saturday as well. several towns there have actually already started caucusing but the results won't be released until the end of next week. colorado and minnesota will caucus next tuesday. police officers spread across a neighborhood in fairfax county tonight warning neighbors about an attempted sex assault. it happened on elmwood street? chantilly and detectives want everyone to know exactly what happened. >> reporter: fairfax county police officers go door to door distributing flyers after a chantilly woman was nearly raped on her way home sunday night. longtime neighbors say this is the first they heard of it. >> i didn't know that happened to my neighbor. that's so scary. >> reporter: police say the

37-year-old was walking along the 4100 block of elmwood street about 9:30 sunday night when she was grabbed by a tall white male with a gun. >> he moved her a short distance and allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. fortunately, whatever dissuaded him, he ran away. and she was unharmed. >> reporter: after the woman reported the alleged abduction and assault, police flooded the area. but the suspect had fled. they returned to canvas several nearby neighborhoods in the hopes that someone saw something. >> it's been a nice place to live so far, so for something like this to happen, pretty shocking. you always wonder about the surrounding areas. >> reporter: fairfax county police hope that this flyer will help generate leads so they can make an arrest in this case of sexual assault. in chantilly, virginia, jane latrell, news4. tonight an electric worker

suffering burns to 50% of his body. a power line shocked him. it caused people to lose power to several customers. quite a scene at the occupy d.c. protest. a man tried to cut down the so-called tent of dreams that's draped over the general mcpherson's statue. that caused heated exchanges. another man also tried to rip the tarp down but only managed to make a bigger hole. demonstrators put up the tent after police told them they could no longer camp at the site. a muslim american group wants the fbi to investigate the vandalism of a mosque in virginia. all the windows of the mosque in chantilly were shattered last night. there is about $60,000 in damage there. the islamic relations are calling on authorities to investigate this as a hate crime.

police think teens partying in the woods may be to blame. drivers hit with tasers left stunned and vulnerable, and that's when the robbers swooped in. we hear exclusively from one of those targeted. here's shamari stone. >> this robber too embarrassed to show his face on camera. police arrested two of his suspected attackers. the third one was allegedly involved in a separate cabbie robbery. joe said he picked up two of the suspects at the rockville metro station on a sunday night, dropped them off, and then he said they used a taser on his neck. >> that was hard. i started fighting back. the one behind me was holding me to my fist. so i stopped fighting. at that time my shoulder was dislocated, you know. i was unable to fight anymore. >> reporter: then they ran away

with his hard-earned money. you work hard and someone comes and takes your money away, you can't feel good at all. >> reporter: five days before, police say another driver was hit with the same type of weapon. detectives identified, arrest and had charged the three suspects with armed robbery and first-degree assault. >> i wish they could stay behind bars. >> reporter: the good news is both cab drivers are going to be okay. as for the three suspects, they have preliminary hearings later on this month. shamari stone, news4. the transit agency closing the 19th street side to replace the escalators there which are some of the longest and least reliable in the system. the work is expected to last through october. in the meantime, riders will have to use the north entrance near q street. outside tonight, absolutely gorgeous. not you, doug, i'm talking about the weather. >> oh. but you're enjoying it, at least, right? >> i'm definitely enjoying it. as a matter of fact, i was

super bowl ro46. >> there were 7,000 of them that were allowed inside the stadium this time.roll some tape and wel show you what they all look like in there. it was 7,000 fans who really wanted to be in there because some of them paid up to $5,000. there was the caped crusader there and others who were part of the crowd. fans got to lirsten to some of their favorites on the field. the pats, belichick, m. chad ocho cinco for so many years a superstar, and has hardly played in the new england run up to this super bowl.

one guy that was on the field, though, was a man who knows everything there is to know, i guess, about the nfl players. he's the head of the nfl players association and one who believes in those contested labor negotiations last year. shamari smith we're talking about. he's a d.c. native, and wheile e has to represent all the players, i asked him if he thought the redskins would be in a bowl. >> are we -- i mean the skins -- ever going to -- >> don't even. you're talking to a guy whose dad had tickets at the old griffin stadium. i grew up four years old started going to games in 1968 and went all wait through. i root for them equally, but i know there are a lot of broken-hearted fans in washington waiting for their

year. it is a proud franchise with even prouder fans. and the good news behind that is when you do have good fans and a good franchise, hopefully sooner or later, things work out. >> i asked jamar if during those negotiations he wondered whether or not we would get to a super bowl this year, whether there would even be a season, and he said quite frankly he wasn't so sure from time to time. that was a bitter time. >> yeah, that was tough, and it's actually amazing they got that done as quickly as they did and saved the majority of the pre-season. coming up in sports, talking about the redskins. as we know, the giants lost twice to the redskins this year. i posed to the g-men, how are you goes in the super bowl after losing to the skins? the answer kind of interesting. >> can't wait to hear that. >> thank you, gentlemen. more in a moment. ahead in the broadcast tonight, a deer darts around the library in the district, forcing employees to take shelter in the

breaksing news tonight, pfizer is recalling 1,000 packets of pill because they may

not contain enough to prevent pregnancy. they are 14 lots of lo-ovral and 14 lots of norgestrel and ethinl. it won't hurt you to take them but they may not work. police say the man behind the wheel is a manager of another pizza shop that just closed down. they say he was mad because he thought the sign made fun of his restaurant's misfortune. the driver pleaded not guilty. take a look at this. a deer crashes through a window at the southwest washington library. employees of the washington highlands library locked themselves in a workroom. that deer eventually had to be put down. the library will be closed tomorrow so crews can finish cleaning up that mess. deer hunting is causing anxiety for park lovers in one part of fairfax county as neighbors worry about the proximity of the hunters. jackie bensen reports from lorton.

>>i >> it's known as lorton park. it was once part of the lorton prison complex. owners began to complain about road hazards caused by some of the area's four-legged residents, deer. so fairfax county added lorton to the list of bow hunting properties from february to march. they questioned whether it should be allowed during the hours when jog gers and walkers were there. >> they wondered how to use this property once fairfax county took it over. >> some believe the cars pose more of a danger than a stray animal. >> they're a problem. we see them on the roads. it's kind of scary. >> i think it's okay. control the deer population around here for sure. >> a spokesperson for the parks department says signs have been

posted and notices were sent to people living in the area advising them of the times and dates of hunting season. reporting from fairfax county, jackie bensen, news4. >> probably more deer out than normal this time of year. they're probably as confused about the weather as we are. >> i saw something you normally don't see in january, and that's bees. i saw a couple bees outside my house. that is very odd for this time of year. >> some flower shoots coming up? >> still talking about the pollen. we really haven't had a lot in the way of freezing temperatures to kill that pollen off, so some of those allergy sufferers. speaking of january, how about this number. doesn't mean a whole lot, but $404 40.7 degrees. that's the number that's the

average temp for the month. it is amazing how warm it has been and it is still warm out there tonight. as a matter of fact, temperatures just went up a degree. they're now at 56 degrees at the airport with winds from the south-southwest. leesburg, the hiottest area. d.c. coming in at 12 degrees above the average high at 11:00 tonight. 56 in virginia beach, 66 in our area. i think we will see similar numbers during the day tomorrow because we are still ahead of our cold front. no rain out there right now across our region on storm front radar, but one thing you notice as we move back west, this side becoming more enhanced. it's going to have a hard time making its way over the

mountains, but when it does, it's going to come around, say, 5:00, 6:00 in the morning, just about the time many of us are stepping outside the door to get our morning commute. more warm conditions today with the southwesterly wind. we saw plenty of sunshine, but tomorrow, look, this is 6:00 and notice that little line. that's a line coming from the west at 6:00 a.m., right through new york. that's the 95 corridor that will at least see a chance of rain. we're not going to see much in the way of rain tomorrow. most of this will dry out as the frontal boundary drapes across the area. still warm tomorrow and then we'll watch this next storm, this area of low pressure that moves in on thursday. a little bit of a chance of rain on thursday, most of which will stay in washington, and then down south. we will get a little cooler as we make our way to the end of the week. mostly cloudy, breezy, mild with

sto stosh. thousands already in indianapolis for super bowl xlvi. check out the media guys. >> dan, i know this is your sixth super bowl? >> fifth. >> fifth super bowl. but i know it's the first time you've been at media day, which you're not a huge fan of. >> lots of fans there, which they should be, some of them having paid $500 to get in there? >> there were scalpers selling tickets for $300 for people who wanted to get a last ticket for media day. dan makowsky did not have a walking boot on. they're counting on him to help out sunday. matt white did not show because he was feeling under the weather. all in all, it was a rather calm media day. the patriots took to the field for about an hour. the giants were up next, and

things were livened up a bit because the fans were there. you would hear the occasional roar from the crowd. the giants picked by many to win this super bowl because they are peaking at the right time. still hard for many to believe who live in the washington, d.c. area because they lost twice to the redskins this season. i asked the guys how that happened yet they're in the super bowl. >> we struggled against their good defense. i think their defense got overlooked throughout the course of the year as to how good they were, and, you know, we just lost and we got outphysicaled by that defense. >> we're a better football team, and what i mean is we're a better team, we're a better unit. i think after that game when your backs are up against the wall and you still control your own destiny, i think we had kind of an up against the world mentality, that it's about us pulling together as a team, not just offense but defense and special teams going out there, and that's been our formula. it hasn't been just one group

winning games, it's been all of us. >> anton roll, one of the most out spoken players on the giants team after that loss. they had to win out to make it to the playoffs and now they're in the super bowl. anton roll not so serious today. he provided one of the best moments of media day when he gave us his best rendition of a madonna song. >> playing a madonna song. ♪ we are living in a material world ♪ ♪ and i am a material girl i like that one. and "like a virgin." but i can't say that because i'm not that. i don't know, man. i don't even know what i'm saying right now. you might get me in trouble. let me stop talking to you. >> how many times do we feel like that on the air when we just say, i'm going to stop talking for a little while?
