he bested newt gingrich in the winner take all state in florida. after securing the front-runner status, romney's camp has confirmed he will begin receiving secret service protection starting tomorrow. nbc's steve handelsman joins us from tampa. >> reporter: good morning from tampa. mitt romney and his backer figure he is more likely to be the gop nominee after his convincing victory in this huge state. it's the biggest primary win so far. >> florida, you're the best! >> reporter: mitt romney celebrated in tampa, site of the republican convention, and showed off how he would take on barack obama if he is the nominee. >> mr. president, you were elected to lead. you chose to follow and now it's time for you to get out of the way. >> reporter: just ten days ago, romney badly lost south carolina to newt gingrich. he came to florida to fight the former speaker.

and did in two debates and 3,200 tv ads. almost every one attacking gingrich. >> newt attacks because he has more baggage. >> reporter: as they voted yesterday, mr. floridians questioned gingrich's character. he lost big by 14 points, but gingrich signs last night read 46 states to go. >> we are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in tampa as the nominee in august. >> reporter: rick santorum says gingrich blew his chance. santorum staying in. ron paul too. romney said, that's okay. >> our opponents in the other party have been watching and they like to comfort themselves with the thought that a competitive campaign will leave us divided and weak. but i've got news for them. a competitive primary does not divide us, it prepares us and we will win. >> reporter: florida delegates are not divided. romney wins all 50. ahead now immediately lies

scattered caucuses but there is about a month break before the next big state primary. time for these candidates to regroup and refinance if they can. in tampa, florida, i'm steve handelsman, nbc news. lynn, back to you. >> all right, steve. thanks so much. the latest numbers are out from the federal election commission on campaign fund-raising. among the republicans, mitt romney raised 24 million dollars in the fourth quarter. ron paul was second. newt gingrich third. and then rick santorum. harold simmons, pumped $8.5 million dollars in super pacs last fall. seven of that went to karl rove and his super pac american crossroads. on the democratic side, president obama raised a whopping $68 million in the fourth quarter. meanwhile, ghk democratic raised

more than 14 million dollars of all of 2011. in a special congressional election in oregon last night, the democrats held on to a house seat. suzan suzanne won the vote in portland and some of its suburbs. she will replace david yu who resigned last year after a woman accused him of making an unwanted sexual advance. here is a look at some of the other stories making news early today in america. dramatic video comes from new jersey. showing police officers saving a man trapped in a burning car monday night. the officers were shocked to find anyone inside when they spotted a 57-year-old man passed out in the driver's seat. his door was stuck but one officer was able to brave the flames and free the man. he is now at home recovering. unbelievable. in new york, a five-story building gave new meaning to the term high-rise because police raided a massive marijuana growing operation with hundreds

of plants in an elaborate growing system. each floor was used for a different stage of the growing process. it's not a bird, not a plane, and contrary to what you may think you're seeing, those are not flying people. those are radio controlled planes shaped to look like humans soaring across the new york city skyline. these were flown as a publicity stunt for a new movie and the video has gotten more than a million hits on youtube. now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is meteorologist bill karins with a look at the forecast. that is where i run on the hudson river. i'm relieved i was not there. i think it was friday. it looked so real. >> marketing first and gets a double thumb's up. >> maybe a pack they were wearing may be would have been unbelievable? >> the pack hasn't been developed safely not yet.

a warm january day and now we step into february. yesterday's high temperatures everywhere colored in on this map was 50 or warmer which is just, i mean, look how much of the country was 50 degrees on the last day of january. we had record highs and close to all-time record highs. areas like des moines and a lot of warmth down around the gulf and it stuck some of that warmth all the way into new england. today, things are not quite as warm. things have cooled off a little bit. rain showers popping up and gulf moisture is heading northward so a rainy, drizzly day. storms in louisiana pushing into mississippi. had a couple of strong storms overnight south of alexandria with tornado warnings. no reports of any damage thankfully. but that system is heading over interstate 55 over jackson. still a warm day today but rain down there, especially in the gulf coast states. that's a look at the national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window.

good morning. welcome back. i'm lynn berry. here are your top headlines this morning. the director of the national intelligence told the congress tuesday that iran is prepared to launch terrorist attacks inside the united states and warnings that iran leaders are reacting to u.s. pressure to stop iran's nuclear program. the taliban in afghanistan is getting direct assistance from pakistani security service according to a secret nato report. pakistan's foreign ministry called the accusations, quote, frivolous. search has been called off for 16 people in a cruise ship that ran aground off the coast of italy. susan g. komen for the cure is cutting offer financing for planned parenthood. the breast cancer organization says new rules prevent it from

funding any group under investigation and a republican-led probe in the house disqualified planned parenthood. planned parenthood says the organization is caving in to political pleasure from anti-abortion groups. amazing video has emerged of uganda of american tourist encountered by a group of mountain gorilgorillas. they gathered around for a close look at him and then they went on their way. lucky for the tourist. now here is another look at one of your top health headlines on msnbc.com. researchers have found a way to translate actual words from a person's brain. scientists use sensors to record a patient's brain wave while words were read to them. later, a computer was able to pinpoint portions of the brain wave that matched those same words. needless to say the response of people who cannot speak could be huge. for more information on this and other health stories, check out the health page at msnbc.com.

now here is an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opened at 12,632, after losing 20 points yesterday. the s&p was down a fraction. but the nasdaq added a point. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in tokyo, the nikkei was up seven points. but in hong kong, the hang seng lost 57. the long awaited ipo filing from facebook is sure to have investors buzzing today. cnbc confirms facebook will file initial paper work this morning for $5 billion public offering. the company is looking at evaluation from 75 billion and 100 billion which would make it one of the largest public companies. the dow and the s&p still notched their best january gains in 15 years. .

disappointing after the bell revenue from amazon will be a factor today. earlier exxon mobile dipped 2% after its probable narrowly beat expectations. pfizer beat earnings estimate. the drugmaker announced a recall of about 1 million packets of birth control pills that may not contain enough contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. transportation stocks dipped as u.p.s. flipped despite delivering a quarter profit. fred goodwin has been stripped of his knighthood after leading the bank into near collapse during the financial crisis. finally, it appears the virtual voice of the iphone 4s doesn't understand scottish. when asked how is the weather today, siree mistakenly hears how is the weather on labor day? you hope the iphone 5 will speak

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, this is supposed to be the year the new york knicks finally put all of the pieces together. but, instead, up until last night, they have been falling to pieces. here is fred roggin with an early look at all of your sports headlines. good morning. the knicks need something to turn their season around. maybe they got it last night. carammelo anthony returned afte missing a couple of games with nagging injuries and claimed the lowest pistons just what the doctor ordered. had he a game high 25 and the knicks won it 113-86. memphis, nuggets and grizzlies down to the wi. mayo tied the game 40 seconds to play and forced overtime. in o.t. mayo again. a three for the lead. memphis wins. college hoops. tough night for michigan state. they lost their leading scorer green with a knee injury and then lost to unranked illinois.

brandon paul had a game high 18. illinois pulled off the upset 42-41. hockey caps and lightning needed overtime. martin st. louis got a step on the defenseman steven stamkos who was there to pop in the rebound. his league leading 33rd of the year. tampa wins it 4-3 in o.t. peng rinse rally from three goals down against toronto. tied game. a little luck, james neal's shot off malkin's arm and not. not exactly how you drew it up but they will take it. malkin scores the winner in the shoot-out and penguins turn it on and beat the leafs. got a hundred players and several coaches and it is super bowl media day. lucas oil stadium in indianapolis, media asked the players anything and everything about the big game. more style than substance. as always, plenty of cliche. >> a team that's going to win sunday is the team that plays the best. >> and this is a dream come

for the grammys. nominated six grammys, adele had surgery on her vocal chords last year but sing on the show for the first time in five months. as showbiz mixes with politics the president of haiti named sean penn ambassador at large since the 2010 earthquake for his work. michelle obama convinced jay leno who said he hadn't eaten a vegetable since 1969 to eat a veggie pizza. does that count? kind of. among other special pacs revealing funding yesterday, comedian stephen colbert raised just over a staggering $1 million. colbert who had used his pac mainly to highlight campaign finance law absurdity is yet to say what he intends to do with the money. in a letter to the federal election commission, colbert said, quote, how do you like me

now, s.e.c.?" hopefully, it goes to charity. a nearby palm bay, florida, a man is trying to get the government to stop declaring him dead. he says he is a former army drill sergeant. but for the fourth time the v.a. have cut off his benefits saying he is deceased. it could cost him a pretty penny after receiving a bill for $94,000 to pay back those veterans benefits. the v.a. says it's looking into it. i'm lynn berry. this is "early today," your first stop of the day today on your nbc station.

pivotal primary in a few minutes. right now, let's look at our forecast. another nice day on tap? >> what a dreamy day yesterday was. got into the 60s. we'll do it again, but this morning we may have sprinkle activity before then. right now, look at the temperatures. off to a relatively mild start here for the first day of february. right now 52 at reagan national. we're in the low to mid 50s in montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county, across most of virginia, maryland, west virginia. we're in the 50s. a few places farther to the north like frederick has dipped to 37. now looking at the areas in green, those are areas of sprinkles that have come through the metro area the last couple of hours. there's another band of light sprinkle activity in montgomery county, western fairfax, southern loudoun county into prince william and fauquier. farther to the north, rain, panhandle of west virginia, washington, frederick, carroll county, maryland. other sprinkles in the northern shenandoah valley and out of the moin
