what his rivals want, money, and now, momentum. >> reporter: the day after his big win, mitt romney is upbeat. >> this is an exciting time. i'm happy for a little celebration. this is confetti. we just won florida. >> reporter: he was in minnesota, where republicans vote next week. >> thank you tonight for this great victory. >> reporter: florida was romney's breakthrough. voters gave him a 14-point win and proof, romney claimed on the "today" show, that the republican right is finally on the romney train. >> people who call themselves conservative and very conservative overwhelmingly supported my campaign. tea partiers supported by campaign. >> reporter: not true, according to exit polling. newt gingrich beat romney with very conservative voters and with evangelicals. >> it is now clear that this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader, newt gingrich, and the massachusetts moderate >> reporter: but there is still ron paul and rick santorum. >> this race is just beginning.

there's only four states that have spoken. >> reporter: over the next week in nevada, maine, colorado and minneapolis, santorum could do better, paul, too. they are caucus states, where fewer but more enthusiastic backers can tip the balance. meanwhile, megarich mitt romney raised eyebrows, saying he is not concerned about the very poor. >> i'm not concerned about the very poor. >> reporter: he scrambled to clarify, saying the poor have a safety net, the rich are doing fine. he's concerned about the middle class, 90 to 95% of americans who are struggling. was it a stumble or an appeal to the staunch conservatives romney still needs to win over? speaking of wealth, romney's fundraising for the fight ahead is far surpassing his rivals. his campaign has 20 million in the bank. his super pac is taking in million dollar contributions. i'm steve handlesman, news4, tampa, florida. >> thank you, steve. and the gop presidential race moves on to four other states over the next week,

nevada holding caucuses saturday, maine beginning caucuses saturday as well. several towns have begun caucusing but the results won't be released until the end of next week. colorado and minneapolis will caucus next tuesday. president obama went to northern virginia today to announce a new mortgage refinancing plan that would provide relief for what he described as responsible homeowners who tried to make their mortgage payments on time. news4's erika gonzalez has details. >> reporter: president unveiled his new homeowner bill in falls church, today. >> the government must take responsibility for rule, fair and fairly enforced. >> reporter: the plan would save responsible homeowners current on their payments with no more than one dell link yes, ma'amcy

in the last six months as much as $3,000 a year. many homeowners aren't flocking to refinance because they can't. >> falling prices lock them out of the market. they were underwater, made more difficult for them to refinance. then you have got all the fees involved in refinancing. >> reporter: the president's plan includes a noticeably shorter mortgage application. >> simple, not complicated. informative, not confusing. >> reporter: with an estimated price tag of $5 to $10 billion, john waller with the northern virginia association of realtors says he is almost certain the bill will get resistance on capitol hill. >> realtors don't really care whether the democrats or the republicans propose this. we are thankful that the president has decided to take a stand. >> reporter: but he says obama's plan is just what the nation needs to get people over the edge of the housing crisis. >> president reagan said a recession is when your neighbor loses their home. depression is when you lose your home. >> that was erika gonzalez reporting. the president said the application process would also be streamlined so it is easier around faster to apply. he you recalled congress to

approve the plan but some republicans already imoppose it because of the costs involved it was a chaotic scene in northwest d.c., a driver losing control of his car clips a mother pushing a baby carriage this all happened at 14th and h streets. the vehicle also hit a building, sending car parts fledding and pedestrians scrambling. pat collins has our report. >> reporter: a one-car, high-speed accident amount sidewalk, the cadillac comes up over the curb. into this building, smashes out that window, bounces off this column, ricochets into that tree box. be still my heart. the scene, 14th and 8th streets northwest this cadillac car jumps the sidewalk, slams into this building with such force that the car's front wheel and

suspension flew away. people inside the building said they felt the impact. they say it was like a bomb went off. you were on the third floor. what did you hear, what did you see? >> it sounded like the whole building shook. it sounded like something had ran into the side of the building, i looked out the window and saw that car on top of the grate of the tree. >> loud explsounded like. we all rushed to the windows, we had no idea what was going on. but then all of a sudden, people were running all over the place. >> reporter: on the sidewalk, they say the car grazed a woman who was pushing a baby in a carriage. the mother and child transported to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. now, the car came to a stop an an iron tree box fence, the motor still running, wheels still spinning, james sherrod ran to help. >> i was driving eastward toward h street and tried to avoid a car and swerved into the wall

over here, crashed, he struck a lady on a leg, i went to the car, turned the car off, me and another citizen turned the car off, because it was smoking. >> reporter: the driver had some head injuries. they think he will be okay. he was taken to the hospital for treatment. reporting live from downtown washington, i'm pat collins, news4. a few blocks away from there, a police officer on a motorcycle was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle. this happened at f and 14th streets northwest in front of the national press club building. the officer was escorting a motorcade from the country of georgia when she was hit by a woman driving a camry. the accident made a mess of traffic in that area for a while. well, the countdown to the super bowl is under way, just four more days before the giants and the patriots do battle in indianapolis. >> and jim vance is in the center of it all and joins us live from indy with an interesting perspective on the nfl from a former head coach. hey, vance. >> hi, when day, hi, doreen. i think we can expect a heck of

a game on sunday, in part because these guys are just absolutely world class athletes n fact, there could be no question about the athleticism of the player in the nfl today. they are truly gifted men, most of whom really work hard to fine tune their god-given talents. the question has been raised, perhaps legitimately, about the character of some of them. it has been suggested that many of them are lacking in character, far more perhaps than back in the day, as the saying goes. we put the question of character to a couple of guys who know something about it. former indianapolis colts tony dungy and also former redskins doc walker. >> nfl is a great livelihood, it is a great profession. we have got a great brand. and what guys have to understand is that there's so much attention on this game and on the players involved that one guy's actions really come earth

whole landscape and so you can have 53 guys on your team and 52 guys doing great things, being exactly what you want. if one guy is off, that's who gets the attention and that's how you're looked at. >> you're supposed to be an adult and yet these guys have agents, but they don't have people in life skills that can deal with them. the league, ironically, 32 teams to me ought to have 32 guys with street sense that are in their organization and most of them flat out don't. they don't even know how to communicate to the people they pay millions of dollars to i think quite frankly, a lot of them are afraid to talk to them. to me, if i'm an openewner, i go get guys to speak same language i'm paying. >> i think one of the things doc walker is saying, they ought to have 32 doc walkers to go around to these different leagues to teach the guys life skills a lot come into it, get all that

breaking news from cap top heights a man was hit by a dump truck. the scene is central avenue and daimler drive. police say witnesses told them the man jumped in front of the truck. we are told he is still alive at this hour. central avenue west bound is closed between peppermill drive and cindy lane. we have a developing story just this one out of egypt. more than 70 people killed, 1,000 hurt, after a riot following a soccer match in port sayyid. fans stormed the field when the home team pulled off a rare win against their top-ranked rival. rioters threw sticks, rocks and fireworks at opposing fans and players and many were caught in a stampede. players rushed to the locker room for safety this is the deadliest soccer violence since 1976 when 78 were killed in a

world cup qualifying match in guatemala city. he was as legendary as his long-running tv dance show. soul train creator and host don cornelius was found dead in his california home early this morning. as stephanie stanton reports, it appears it was a suicide. ♪ soul train, soul train >> reporter: it was the first tv dance show to prominently feature african-americans and played a critical role in bringing soul and r & b music to mainstream america. >> and to this day, they are still going as strong as ever. >> reporter: "soul train" creator don cornelius died of an apparent suicide early this morning. police responded to reports of gunfire around 4 a.m. at his mulholland drive home. when they arrived, they found the 75-year-old with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. he was pronounced dead about an hour later at a los angeles area hospital. "soul train" was won one of the longest running syndicated shows

in television history. cornelius hosted from 1971 to 1993 and was instrumental in offering wider exposure to black musicians like james brown, aretha franklin and michael jackson. >> he brought so much. he brought a different light to television. he brought, you know, just a different aspect to generation. he has changed generation. he changed the marketing of how we view tv now. >> reporter: in recent years, cornelius faced medical and legal troubles, including a 2008 arrest for domestic violence against his estranged wife. in this 2005 "today" show interview, he talked about his "soul train" legacy. >> i thought it had tremendous potential. >> reporter: sadly news of his death comes just as the "soul train awards" plan to return to the airwaves in november after a two-year hiatus. >> peace and -- >> soul. >> reporter: stephanie stanton, nbc news, los angeles. people in europe are trying to cope with an unusual cold snap that started in eastern europe and hit ukraine and poland especially hard. at least 60 people were killed

are talking about changes coming up, we are going to be talking about rain moving into the area, 72 degrees, that was the high today. 48 the low this morning. so, well above the average. the record today, 77 degrees, so we did not set a record at any one of the airports. currently, 65 degrees at the airport, reagan national. winds out of the northwest now, 12 miles per hour that northwesterly wind shows you the frontal passable has made its way through the area and will continue to do so throughout the evening tonight. we do have some rain down to the south but first off, the temperatures around the rest of the region this evening, still just gorgeous, 68 in fredericksburg, 55 back toward leesburg, there is the cooler air, 54 in winchester, 56 in marti martinsburg, trying to make its way in there do so overnight into the day tomorrow. temperatures around the region, 72 in richmond, 71, richmond, 72 in washington, 66 in philly, back to the west, 57 in pittsburgh, 58 in morgan town, the kind of air we can expect in

here tomorrow, that is 15 degrees cooler than where we were today but yet it is still going to be 10 to 15 degrees above average. storm four radar, nothing to show you now in our region, we widen out here, notice the rain down toward southwestern portions of virginia, starting to move in around roanoke, around virginia tech, down through richmond, very close to the richmond area right now, if you are getting ready to travel down i-95, could be a wet ride for you as you make your way into southern virginia and the carolinas that area of low pressure will pass us by the mild weather we have seen today, call it recall with a, will pass by off to the east. see shower activity, most likely early tomorrow morning, but then that front will move through and that is going to clear out any rain and really just give us some sunny skies tomorrow, so still a beautiful day, you will need the jacket tomorrow but not going to need those heavy coats any time soon because wore going to stay not just cool but temperatures will remain above average. so yes, it is cooler but still going to be quite nice across

our area, high pressure starts to move in for date on friday. as far as our weather is concerned this evening, just going to be perfect out there tonight. you can definitely take the dog for a walk, kids outside, let them ride the bikes for a little bit. mild, increasing clouds, 52 to 58, out of the northwest, 5 to 10 miles per hour. tomorrow morning, walking out the door, may need that small umbrella, call it the little purse umbrella, showers likely, not chilly, 40 to 47, average high temperature this time of the year to start off the day tomorrow and back above average tomorrow. temperatures 53 to 57 degrees, still nice but not nearly as mild as we were during the day today. we make our way through the next couple of day 52, friday, you abundant sunshine, saturday, sunday, watching that storm system off to the west is going to be a pretty good snowmaker out there toward denver, it is going to wait to get to us until late sunday, pos bly into the day on monday. temperatures should remain above

capitol hill now the house gets ready to vote on the federal worker pay freeze. the bill would extend the current pay freeze through 2013. house republicans who support it are highlighting a new congressional report that shows federal workers make 2% more than their peers in the private sector. gop members also point out a provision that would freeze their own pay and all salaries of members of congress.

president obama is against extending the pay freeze and instead, wants to allow a small .05% increase starting next year. be the largest internet ipo ever. social networking giant facebook is planning to go public, he filed the paperwork an hour ago asking to be traded on the stock exchange, a price per share is far from set but as chris clackum reports, now investor interest is at a faefer pitch and facebook users may get a chance to cash in.ever pitch and facebook users may get a chance to cash in. >> reporter: after launching facebook from a harvard dorm room eight years ago, founder mark zuckerberg, who is now 27 years old, will take it public and get a great big like from headquarters in menlo park, california, as well as from analysts who say it was inevitable. >> facebook has become such a huge part of our lives tapped is really hard to replace now because it has taken the place of a lot of just personal e-mailing, a lot of other social

face with the suspect. darcy spencer has the exclusive interview. >> just to see the love that people just given my brother is amazing and it's given us peace. >> reporter: sherman harris is the brother of lenny harry, the missing alexandria activist who was found dead inside a well in fort washington over the weekend. ws4, he said family's faith is holding them together. >> how is the family holding up? >> well, first, i want to say thank god, because had it not been for god, we don't even want to imagine what it would look like. god's been so good to our family, covering us and we were so grateful. >> reporter: linwood johnson is the man charged with shooting harris to death. the motive was robbery, police same johnson was hired to sell t-shirts by harris after johnson got out of jail. does that bring you any sense of peace? ere's more. re 'cause i know the direct tachesd media, everybody did such a great job and we were thankful.

>> harris was last seen at this rec center in alexandria in september. his body may have never been found if it weren't for an ano mouse 911 caller. that directed police to the well. johnson appeared in court in upper marlboro and held without bond. records show he has a criminal history dating back to the 1980s. records show johnson was still on probation in d.c. on charges he was in possession of counterfeit dvds. >> i'm not upset with lynn wood johnson, i would like to talk to him and pray for him. i know it is just a bad spirit in him. >> reporter: lenny harris's family made funeral arrangement, held at the greater mount calvary holy church in northeast washington on monday. it gets under way at 10:00 in the morning with an hour of remembrance. in alexandria, darcy spencer,

news4. a loudon county woman pleaded guilty to today hiring a hitman to kill her boyfriend's alleged mistress. ann janine cinnamon of sterling, virginia, offered a man she met online last fall $500 to carry out the crime smechblt three months plotting out the murder and planning her al by the man she thought would help her called the fbi. cinnamon faces up to ten years in prison. she is due back in court in may for sentencing. the first step into a legal battle involves a historic farm and a prestigious maryland university n 1988, elizabeth bell beale banks gifted the 138-acre bell wood farm to johns hopkins university, she sold it for $5 million, even though it was worth much more and her family says she asked it not be heavily developed. recently, hopkins announced maps to turn that farm into a commercial science park. banks' family is suing, saying it violates her wishes. there was a hearing today on a motion by hopkins to dismiss the lawsuit. no word on when the judge will

decide. maryland governor martin o'malley laid out his vision for improving the economy today and it could cost taxpayers more money. in his state of the state address today, he gave several suggestions for building revenue, including shifting who pace for teacher pension bus everyone is not on board with this plan. chris gordon has mix reed action from annapolis. >> reporter: maryland governor martin o'malley says they have to continue to make choices in spending doubts remove an era of recession. maryland schools have been named number one four years in a row because of the state's investment and now asking local governments to help pay teacher pensions. >> our proposal balances this responsibility 5050 between the state and the counties. >> reporter: both the month come rained prince georges county executives say that governor o'malley's map to shift the payment of teacher pensions from

the state to the counties is too big a burden ton bear. the government is cycle maryland motorists to pay more at the pump. the price of gas could go up 21 cents a gallon is'6% sales stacks applied gas purchases. i think the bottom line is we need to significantly improve the transportation in the state of maryland. >> reporter: senator ej pip ken gave the republican response to the state of the union. >> the governor's gas tax increase could be as much as 21 cents a gallop which when you add to the nightmare that consumers are already paying shows just how out of touch the governor is with the working families of maryland. >> reporter: governor o'malley says it is time to pass a marriage law that protects free lynn joyce freedom and marriage rights equally. >> the governor made a powerful statement on the behalf of marriage equality that the speech, stayed is about the dignity of every individual and whether we are going to be fair to all of the children of

maryland. >> reporter: but it is still unclear if there are enough votes to pass the same-sex marriage bill this session. >> unemployment in maryland is down to a three-year low? in richmond, a bill that would allow home-schooled students to play on public schools sports teams a big hurdle in the legislature, parents who home school their kids argue. administrators and teachers say it is not fair. it is named after tim tow bow, home schooled in florida and played for a public high school team. first time in five months, louisa county, virginia, high school and middle school students are back in class on the same day. the students had been sharing the middle school campus, going to class on alternate days after that earthquake last august. now high school students moved into a mobile campus made up of 90 trailers converted into classrooms. school leaders deciding whether to build a new high school or

normally at this time, i'm not storm center but not today, today, we are in downtown, state of fairfax, look ac the a beautiful night tonight, a lot of people out and about tonight, very close to the area i grew up, had my fifth birthday back there down the street, preschool down the street, too homecoming for me. as far as the weather is concerned, couldn't ask for more than this. as far as what we are going to see the next couple of days, excuse me, we do have some rain that is going to try to move in. currently, 65 degrees out there at the airport, 12 miles per hour the rain in roanoke, should move in here maybe around 11, 12:00 tonight, light shower activity, mostly what we will

d.c. lawmakers took the first step today toward abandoning a highly criticized plan to offer online gambling in the statement council committee voted to repeat measure.

as tom sherwood reports, the move followed complaints that the original process was poisoned by a lack of public scrutiny >> reporter: d.c. lottery officials hoped to be the first in the nation to capitalize in online gambling last year, with tens of millions of dollars to be made in city revenues. after a year of controversy, allegations of secrecy you complaints of no public hearings and critical inspector general report, a key d.c. council committee voted to repeal any online gambling with a full council expected to do the same tuesday. >> really goes took this whole ethics thing. we passed an ethics bill and that's, in my view, talking the talk. what we did today was walk the walk. you know, implement the ethics that you voted for. >> reporter: at-large council added online gambling to a budget bill in late 2009, defended the bill and said the much revenue. >> i have said from the beginnings about revenue and protecting the residents of this
