i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. big news from the campaign trail today. donald trump has just bestowed his endorsement. >> he is backing mitt romney, and the news comes as a surprise to a lot of observers including romney's chief competitor. let's get straight to steve handelsman live on capitol hill with the latest. what prompted trump to endorse romney today? >> reporter: i think he actually just wants what so many republicans want, and that is somebody who they're more confident can beat barack obama. so that's why the donald said you're hired. he didn't actually say that today. that's what he meant when he hired mitt romney as his endorsed candidate. it was a bit of a show in las vegas. it's not that romney really needed the trump endorsement in nevada which has the republican caucus on saturday because he's already got a big lead in the polls there but this adds to romney's national aura of inevitability.
4:01 pm
here's how it went in las vegas a little while ago. >> mitt is tough. he's smart. he's sharp. he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love, so, governor romney, go out and get them. you can do it. >> thank you. there are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life. this is one of them. being in donald trump's magnificent hotel and having his endorsement is a delight. >> reporter: this gives romney another way to try to change the subject from his gaffe on cnn the night before last when he said that he doesn't really care, he's not really concerned, not very concerned he said about the very poor. he said they have a safety net. this of course not only prompted democrats to jump all over him, president obama here in town today at a prayer breakfast talked about the poor, the importance of keeping them in mind without mentioning the name mitt romney, but newt gingrich campaigned against romney, jim
4:02 pm
and pat, out in nevada today, and said he's not for a safety net for the poor. he's for trampling to power them up to the working class. newt gingrich said he is concerned about helping all americans implying the megarich mitt romney is not. back to you. >> steve, what about the timing? in the wake of the comment about the very poor from romney does it help or hurt him today and does it help him more in the primary than in a down the road in the general election? >> reporter: you have to believe for the republicans, the independent saying, geez, i'm concerned about our nominee being a megamillionaire or paid a 15% marginal tax rate, to have him up there with the multi billionaire donald trump doesn't help. but, you know, donald trump is a powerful republican. you got to believe he's going to reach into his back pocket and help mitt romney that way. he helped him publicly today. and so, you know, romney is not
4:03 pm
shooig aw shying away from the fact he is a guy with an awful lot of money. he didn't shy away from his tax rates or from the remark when he said he is not concerned about the very poor because he says he wants the middle class e said 90% to 95% of americans not the rich, not the very poor, to know he's the guy for them. so we'll see if it works. it looks like he is on a march at least in nevada and looks like the next contest will be his if the prevote polls are right. that would be if you count new hampshire, south carolina, florida, nevada, that would be for mitt romney if he wins on saturday three out of four. >> steve, newt gingrich's camp was kind of counting on a trump endorsement. how are they taking this? >> reporter: they have to be embarrassed because aides to newt gingrich, not newt gingrich himself, but his aides said last night to reporters to the ap, it's going to be us. and it wasn't. it was romney. that doesn't look good. >> all right. steve handelsman live on the hill. thanks so much. >> you're welcome. >> thanks. as steve mentioned president

obama spoke at his fourth national prayer breakfast this morning. the annual event began back in 1953 and is held on the first thursday in february. it is hosted by congress but the president is always a keynote speaker. this morning president obama said his faith plays a role in his economic policies. >> we leave our values at the door. we abandon much of the moral glue that has held our nation together for centuries and allowed us to become somewhat more perfect a union. >> president obama said he starts every morning with a brief prayer and some scripture. that is punxsutawney phil the world's most famous groundhog. this morning he emerged from his layer and saw his shadow.
4:05 pm
that means another six weeks of winter. he made the annual groundhog day prediction in front of 20,000 people. his predictions date back to 1886. phil has now seen his shadow 100 times. there is no tally of how many times he has been right, though. dupont circle is home to a new groundhog day tradition. the only difference? d.c.'s newest weatherman isn't quite as lively as punxsutawney. potomac phil, a stuffed groundhog, predicted the weather this morning in the city's first annual groundhog day celebration. just like punxsutawney phil potomac phil predicted six more weeks of winter but added a political twist indicating there would also be nine months of political gridlock. organizers say they hope next year potomac phil won't be quite so stiff. >> we looked around really quick and couldn't find a live -- i think maybe all of them are reserved for other events. they have their schedules. so we have to start earlier next year. >> reporter: the d.c. council also made potomac phil's
4:06 pm
prediction the official celebration of groundhog day in the nation's capital. >> he is a little stuffed and stiff. you're right. there is mixed bag of predictions about how much winter we actually have left. meanwhile, most of us are still waiting for winter to begin. >> hear ye, hear ye. >> punxsutawney phil advised us to stay bundled up. >> many shadows do i see. six more weeks of winter it must be. >> reporter: but that's a tough sell for most of the country where it's been one of the warmest winters on record so far. >> i don't know what's up with the weather but i love it. wherever it went i hope it stays. >> reporter: at stores most everywhere merchandise associated with winter weather sits unused and unsold. >> we have 500 snow shovels and ice melt ready to go and you got to have it and it's not moving. >> reporter: it is so warm in texas a store in ft. worth
4:07 pm
hurried up a sale on winter clothing. >> nice to save some money. >> reporter: kansas city is a far cry from where it was groundhog day last year. in the throes of a big blizzard. much of the country is far and away warmer than ever before for february. and ground hogs not quite as famous as phil predicted it'll stay that way, like staten island chuck who gave mayor michael bloomberg two predictions today. >> six more weeks of sun and warm weather. that's the prediction. and a giant win. go giants! >> it's the groundhog! >> reporter: about the only groundhog in agreement with phil's forecast is birmingham bill, who saw his shadow, too. but in new jersey they're teeing it up early. while phil's organizers defend his prediction of six more weeks of winter, somewhere just maybe not where you are.
4:08 pm
nbc news. hey, if this is winter we could get used to six more weeks. okay. not quite 70 today but we did get down into the mid 50s. >> veronica johnson's in the storm 4 center to tell us whether this is going to continue. we're not complaining. at least not here in the studio, veronica. >> that is exactly it. not complaining here either. kind of hard to get six more weeks of winter when you really haven't had winter yet. by the way, that shadow that he saw is from all the flashes that were going off from all the cameras. we're at 54 degrees, ten degrees above average right now. we've got just a mostly clear sky. the temperature at 54 here. 54 also in camp springs. 56 degrees, you folks just down to the south. and 59 degrees currently in warranton. so still doing okay across the area. not any low 70s. there's your rain from the early part of the day this morning. then we've got some clearing that's taken place. most of the rain ended by noon time today.
4:09 pm
so still some clouds hanging up to the north. you folks in montgomery county, howard county over into prince george's county but you can see the big clearing down around front royal areas of prince william county, off to the south and west. so your good night forecast pretty nice for the 5:00 and 7:00 hour. 50 to 55 degrees. then it gets chilly by 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 p.m. down to 43 degrees right inside the beltway, by 11:00 p.m. other locations by 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. upper 30s. so it is going to be colder for tomorrow morning. more like the end of february, though, for tomorrow instead of the early part of february. our weekend, though, guys, well we've added something. what we've added is making the weekend looking awfully interesting. the details in just a few minutes. >> oh, all right. thanks, veronica. three days to go until super bowl xlv. the excitement level is really starting to pick up in indianapolis for the big game. right now there are just over two days and 21 hours until the kickoff to the big game which
4:10 pm
starts around 6:30. news 4's jim vance and dan hellie are in the middle of it all. they have a preview of the big stories they're working on today. >> reporter: greetings from indianapolis. we are here in the super bowl village. everybody already crowding the streets here. big party here in indy getting ready for the giants/patriots game. we're going to go inside the giants and meet a couple wide receivers who could be keys to victory. vance, you got a lot of stuff coming up today. >> a couple really nice things. everyone i've ever talked to has been to indianapolis has said to me you have got to go by long's bakery. it's this little hole in the wall place just a couple miles from here where there are donuts, i swear, to die for. we're going to show you some of that. also, later on tonight we actually, not we, i actually got in one of these things and took a little spin and i got to tell you just the sound of these things alone is enough to make
4:11 pm
your heart stop. what an adventure that was. we'll share it tonight at 11:00. here at the news 4 super screen we want to break down what a lot of football fans and nonfans are looking forward to on sunday, the food of course. and two of the most popular snacks at parties? pizza and wings. this year americans will eat an astounding 1.25 billion wings. that's enough to circle the earth more than twice. and then of course there is the pizza. and this year's big three chains expect to dish out 4.4 million pizza pies. that's not all. factor in 111 million gallons of beer, 89 million pounds of tortilla and potato chips, and more than 71 million pounds of av cados. that is stacked on a football field would be nearly 28 feet deep. now it's traditional for the governors of the respective super bowl teams to bet local grub. so if new england loses, its pies, chips, and of course clam
4:12 pm
chowder. now if the giants lose new york has to pay up big time with yogurt, cheese cake, and new york style bagels. even if you don't have a wager in the game it's a huge foodie day. super bowl sunday is one of the largest days for u.s. food consumption second only to thanksgiving. >> some serious math, pat. you are making us hungry. vance is doing donuts. you can watch the super bowl on only one channel. that would be nbc 4. then don't miss "the voice" as it premieres for its second season. stay up for news 4 at 11:00. big day. >> big day indeed. and our super bowl coverage continues. madonna is gearing up for her halftime performance. we'll go behind the scenes. >> she said today she is freaked out. find out who is giving heidi klum advice. jeanie jones joins us live in the studio next. plus first on 4 the view from a metro driver just seconds before a deadly crash.
4:15 pm
4:16 pm
with a look at how everybody is getting ready for the big night. >> reporter: the energy and excitement are building in indy. the atmosphere. well, there's a reason. a lot of what happens at the super bowl is under the big top. >> it's like a circus. >> reporter: the ring masters for the big show also understand this will not be a normal sunday. behind the scenes of the broadcast there are more cameras, producers, over all preparations, more buttons to push and monitors to tweak. >> it's not routine but you don't want to get nervous. it's pretty much a case of getting excited and you want to just temper the excitement. >> reporter: that may be toughest for the players. they are polite but understand four days before kickoff it's time to get to work. >> time to go to work. time to go to work. a time to work and a time to play rnch a big part of the play on sunday will be the halftime show. when it comes to all of the hype, there are few who understand that better than madonna. but even she says that she is
4:17 pm
overwhelmed by this stage. >> i am so excited to be here, incredibly nervous. this is a midwesterner girl's dream. >> reporter: most of the players say they're in awe of the legendary performer. >> i think it's a perfect fit for the biggest stage in the sport we play. >> reporter: but a very random unscientific check of some of the players' ipods reveals -- any madonna on there? >> no, i don't have madonna. >> no madonna. i'm sorry. sorry, madonna. >> reporter: and then there are other issues. >> i just hope that she keeps her clothes on. >> great attention to detail has been paid to my wardrobe. there will be no wardrobe malfunctions. promise. >> reporter: everyone involved working to make sure the big show goes off without a hitch. now a lot of people have been asking what madonna will play during the halftime show during the super bowl. she would not reveal the set list today but did give a few clues. she says that she will sing

4:19 pm
expect. they wonder if she swallowed the bar or just what is going on. they're tired of the revolving door like a circus. >> all drama. >> the papparazzi is staked out whether she is home or not. it has to be a nuisance. okay? >> okay. >> a human earthquake. i have not heard that. very fitting though. okay. on to brad pitt. more popular character out in hollywood of course. >> yes. >> his secret for getting his kids to do what he wants them to do. this is not an easy task. >> no. every mom and dad knows, i mean, time to wake up. brush your teeth. sometimes doesn't happen the way we want it to happen. brad pitt, guess what he uses? coca-cola. >> coca-cola? >> the soda. yes. i think brad is going to get in trouble for that because we know that sugar is not good for your diet and, kids, they already are hyper. >> and the caffeine. >> are they drinking it or brushing their teeth with it? >> all of the above. brad is like me and angelina need to be on the set and they have to get up and go. they have six. go figure. there is a trick maybe some

parents might want to try. maybe. seal' ex-girlfriend has a message for his wife. >> yes. go figure. you know, what a tangled web we weave. seal's ex-girlfriend who is a german model i hear called heidi klum up and said look. if he is trying to crawl back into your life don't let him in. the meltdowns continue. we all know in recent news, you know, they split up. she is considering divorce because she is concerned about the mental effects on the children. you know, with seal having these outbursts and getting upset so the ex-girlfriend has called heidi like, girl, don't believe the hype. he is going to try to woo you. get rid of him. but something about that seal. he keeps getting those blondes pouncing. he's doing something. >> maybe the songs he writes. >> hey. >> okay. speaking of music rapper jarul is in jail on gun possession conviction charges but certainly is not hanging out with the wrong crowd. >> this is nothing new.
4:21 pm
his career has not been happening. he can't pay for a hit record. you know, a lot of times in the music industry folks will do anything to get a buzz. that's what i'm figuring. i mean, hey, i'm back in, you know, behind bars. still not going to work. >> okay. >> i don't know. >> if he could conduct himself well outside as he does inside maybe he would be further ahead. >> not happening. still not working. he's trying anything. >> okay. what do you have coming up tomorrow? >> hey, tune in. got tickets for everything. everybody big coming to town including t.i., new edition. and we have so many sexy singles and couples in the dmv so just cupid is running rampant at my show. >> okay. count down to valentine's day. >> absolutely. >> it's february. >> great to see you. >> you too. i have a blast. >> thank you.
4:22 pm
thanks so much. we'll tweet you. >> you have to. >> all right. >> thanks, jeanie. coming up, the faa weighs in on the fireball in the sky over texas. >> after two perfect days this week, well, the day was cloudy. what's in store for the rest of the week? storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the answer.
4:25 pm
the day is not ending as it started. >> right. i was on my way to work going come on, clouds, break. we need some sunshine! we promised everyone some sunshine. >> you must have connections. >> somewhat. >> and our temperature is not bad either. but we'll talk about a colder night coming our way. early part of the day today we started out in the 40s again but tomorrow morning we'll be starting out in the 30s. chilly for some and cold for others. let's take a look outside. we're still trying to get rid of the rest of the clouds out there. we have a partly sunny sky now. the temperature? 54 degrees. and on top of that behind the system we've gotten a little bit of wind. that wind out of the north-northwest at 21 miles per hour right now. look at the numbers throughout the area from 46 degrees in hagerstown. there is your cooler air already starting to come in. to still hanging on to a little
4:26 pm
warmth down south. 61 fredericksburg, virginia and 61 degrees in charlottesville, virginia. so overnight and for tomorrow morning it is going to be chilly. 46 to 43. 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. there is your clear skies. right into the day tomorrow. and cold starting out between 30 and 34 degrees tomorrow morning. sun is up at 7:13. we are talking about sunshine for tomorrow indeed. there is the clearing off to the west down around roanoke. radar shows not much here but they've got a big storm system that is really starting to ramp up in denver and around colorado. yeah, throughout this entire area the rockies getting hit with a big storm stem. they'll get about a foot of snow here and by tomorrow a lot of that on the ground. the snow blowing, drifting around because they could see winds up to 40 miles per hour. that system will start heading eastward and it could make our weekend a little interesting at times. but until then there is your area of high pressure moving south. we'll have sunshine around for the day tomorrow.
4:27 pm
then as we get into friday night and saturday, saturday still what i think is going to be a pretty day for the early part and the mid part of the day. clouds start to increase and by the time we get to saturday night, the system pulls eastward and we could be looking at a mixture of rain and snow at times. so you want to stay tuned for that system. for us a few clouds continue. nice and breezy as temperatures step down to the 40s by tomorrow morning. much cooler. 30 to 36 degrees. but that really is seasonable for us. then 47 to 53 degrees tomorrow. that still puts us above average. so i'll leave the four-day forecast up here so you can see saturday the clouds increase. we're talking about a system that comes in late probably after 8:00 p.m. and leaves out of here probably early in the morning around 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. so it's an overnight system for saturday and sunday. we're watching it closely. those temperatures overnight will be critical between about 32 and 37 degrees. >> okay. sunday is a good time for it if it has to happen.
4:28 pm
4:31 pm
welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here's what's making news at 4:30. donald trump has decided to endorse mitt romney for the white house. trump made the announcement late this afternoon in las vegas ahead of the nevada caucuses on saturday. the news came as a surprise to many, including the gingrich camp. they were so sure of trump's support they leaked the news last night that the endorsement was going to newt gingrich. >> puxatanie phil emerged from his lair and saw his shadow this morning. the world's most famous groundhog predicted another six weeks of winter. the annual groundhog day tradition dates back to 1886. on wall street stocks ended on a mixed note on this thursday the news came following an encouraging report on jobless claims. the dow industrials fell ten points but the nasdaq picked up 11 and the s&p 500 ended a point higher. >> now to a story you saw first on 4. a camera onboard a metro bus
4:32 pm
captured the moment a truck crossed the median and slammed right into the bus full of people. despite the violent impact the bus driver was able to keep her hands on the wheel and likely saved lives. >> reporter: it was sudden and shocking. the metro bus driver whose view you just witnessed lived although she is seriously injured. but the driver of the pickup truck that crossed the median did not survive. metro's assistant general manager for bus operations describes the importance of the bus camera video. >> drive cam clip, when the bus brakes hard or has an incident, brakes hard, gives us a 12-second clip of the activity just before the incident and just after. >> reporter: he also praised the 13-year veteran bus driver's handling of the collision, which happened in december at the height of evening rush hour on rockville pike near cedar lane. no shoulder lane, no room for
4:33 pm
error. >> obviously she was alert. she made every attempt possible which was very little time to do anything. we're very fortunate the injuries are serious but fixable and she's in recovery and she's recovering now at home going through some rehab. we look forward to her coming back and providing that service again. >> reporter: police say they still haven't determined what caused the pickup to jump the median. >> while they're narrowing their focus they are not ready to confirm any of the causes at this point. >> reporter: metro says it is hopeful the driver will make a full recovery. reporting from bethesda, jackie benson, news 4. and we have just received the 911 calls from passengers aboard that bus. we'll hear from them and have a live report coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 tonight. a wealthy florida man is getting a lot of attention for legally adopting his 42-year-old girlfriend. personal injury lawyers say 49-year-old john goodman is trying to protect his fortune from an upcoming civil case.
