>> i'm wenldy rieger. jim vance is on assignment at the super bowl. we begin with the republican presidential contest. there is big news from the campaign trail. donald trump has just endorsed mitt romney. the news comes as a surprise to a lot of observers including romney's chief competitor. let's go right to steve handelsman on capitol hill. hi, steve. more drama? >> it was reality and it was a show but the show part was a little weird. you'll see. the next republican vote is saturday. it's a caucus in nevada. and mitt romney's already got a pretty big lead in prevote polls. but this endorsement today by donald trump in nevada could add to mitt romney's national aura of inevitability. it looked like a culture clash. >> there are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life. this is one of them. >> reporter: but the flashy tv star real estate mogul did throw support to the gop front-runner. >> it's my honor, real honor, and privilege, to endorse mitt
6:01 pm
romney. >> reporter: donald trump had hinted he might run. those who really did came like pilgrims to the donald. as late as last night, aides to newt gingrich claimed he'd get the endorsement. but it was romney. >> mitt is tough. he's smart. he's sharp. he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love. >> reporter: but megamillionaire mitt romney laughing it up with the you're fired billionaire is a reminder of romney's latest gaffe. >> i'm not concerned about the very poor. we have a safety net there. >> reporter: even romney backers cringed. rush limbaugh spoke for them. >> he makes himself a target with this stuff. he comes across as the proto typical rich republican. >> reporter: touring a factory in nevada today newt gingrich said he'd offer the poor not a safety net but a trampoline to the working place. >> unlike governor romney i really care about making sure that in fact every person has the right to pursue happiness.
6:02 pm
>> reporter: and in a preview of what romney will hear if he is the nominee. >> for the poor, for those at the margins of our society. >> reporter: president obama offered this at a prayer breakfast. >> we are our brother's keeper caring for the poor and those in need. >> reporter: mitt romney's need now is party unity. donald trump helped. but republican enthusiasm or lack of enthusiasm for mitt romney is a different issue. and the relatively poor republican turnout in the florida primary has gop elders concerned. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. doreen, back to you. >> thank you. federal workers face another pay freeze. the house voted yesterday to approve the measure and a similar bill was introduced by senate republicans today. those in favor say the pay freeze will save the government billions of dollars but critics say federal workers have not had a raise in three years. erika gonzalez with reaction from both sides.
6:03 pm
>> reporter: the bill could mean a third straight year of pay freezes for federal employees and one for members of congress as well. the bill was sponsored by republican congressman sean duffy of wisconsin. republican lawmakers like him say the freeze into 2013 would save taxpayers $26 billion. it would not apply to military personnel. duffy says hard-earned taxpayer dollars should not go to pay raises for federal workers who earn 16% higher than their counterparts in the private sector. >> he doesn't even know enough to know what he doesn't know. he just got here. >> reporter: democratic congressman jim moran of virginia says duffy is wrong. >> this is a punishing piece of legislation designed to send a message we don't respect you. >> reporter: president of the national federation of federal employees bill dugan says the nearly 2 million federal workers of this country have helped contribute to lowering the deficit enough already.
6:04 pm
>> with the two-year pay freeze that they're under, that translates into $60 billion of savings over the next ten years. the fact that they tied freezing congress's pay to freezing federal employees' pay for a third year is inexcusable and shameful. >> reporter: the pay freeze legislation now has to make it through the democratic controlled senate. 85% of the federal work force lives and works outside the d.c. metropolitan area. the national federation of federal employees says a third year of pay freezes would not only have an adverse effect here but in the rural areas and smaller communities throughout the country. on capitol hill, erika gonzalez, news 4. there is new information tonight about a young girl sexually assaulted on campus. it happened yesterday at the elementary school in southeast. tonight school administrators are trying to figure out how a man talked his way into the building before the attack.

pat collins joins us from the school with details. pat? >> reporter: doreen, somehow this guy gets inside this elementary school. somehow he's escorted around by an 11-year-old girl. then he sexual assaults her. you can imagine how parents feel. after what happened at the school yesterday, this woman says she plans to take her children out. you didn't hear from the school? >> no, i didn't. no call, no phone call, no note, nothing. >> reporter: are you worried about your child? >> yes. my children walk. so now i have to leave work early and i'll pick them up and i think the best result is for me to transfer them. someone could come into the school. where is the safety? >> reporter: security concerns at ketcham elementary school after an 11-year-old student was sexually assaulted inside the school. sources tell the story this way. around 3:30 yesterday afternoon they say a man managed to get
6:06 pm
inside the school. he claimed he was looking for a student. in a hallway they say he sexually abused a girl who was escorting him around the school. police chief kathy lanier talked about it today on wtop. >> there was an adult male who entered the school, i believe asked to speak to someone in the school and was given an escort. during the course of that escort inappropriately touched a female student. >> reporter: to get into the school you have to ring a bell. right above the bell is a security camera. was it working? did it get a picture of that man? no word on that. at dismissal today, an increased level of protection by school and security personnel. as the concern among parents continues to grow. >> we bring our kids to school, you know, thinking people are supposed to protect them. >> reporter: are you worried about your child?

it will hold responsible anyone that was behind that attack. they have launched an investigation. all of this is coming against some political fallout here in the country. the governor of the city resigned after that incident. security officials in the city also have been suspended. and the parliament has launched an investigation with members of parliament calling on the ministry of interior and prime minister to resign. there are reports that some 400 people have been injured in today's clashes in cairo. doug is here with a look at our weather now. it happened just pretty much the way you described it. kind of rainy and yucky and then the sun broke out. >> wasn't too bad. >> it really wasn't. maybe for rush hour this morning we talked about having the umbrellas early and then this afternoon the sun came out and it was a spectacular afternoon once again. if yesterday wasn't 72, today would have been amazing with a high of 58 degrees. today was a very special day. groundhog day. >> yeah. >> you knew that.
6:17 pm
we have some pictures. i was going to think about how special it was but it was just groundhog day. >> dunt want to disthe groundhog. >> exactly. i didn't want to go against my good friend phil. we go way back. we've had some -- let's not talk about it. let's show you the video. phil came out of punxsutawney a little earlier today and of course this year just like many others he predicts six more weeks of winter across the area. look at that. everybody is so upset right there. one thing you notice not a lot of heavy coats right now going on up there toward the punxsutawney area. it was a little bit -- i saw that, too. a little earlier. did you see that? let's not talk about that. phil by the way you might as well flip a coin. he's not right very often. but 58 degrees out there right now. you ladies, 48 right now coming up with the low temperature. so far we are 23 degrees above average for the month of february. that is simply amazing. very, very warm. but we'll start going down.
6:18 pm
we're already down there. 50 degrees right now the current temperature. winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. so it is much cooler than it was a little bit earlier. that wind bringing in some cooler air. 43 right now in frederick. 46 in leesburg. 48 in culpepper. right now 54 down toward fredericksburg. high temperature around the area 41 in state college. 40 in pittsburgh. 46 in morgan town. you can see we're going to get cooler as the colder air starts to move in. but still, not too bad for this time of the year. as we make our way through the day. this morning we saw shower activity make its way through here. just some wet roads for the most part. you did need the umbrellas from time to time but at least it was a mild rain as that storm system moves on out. we are now looking at clear conditions as storm 4 radar, that's what we're going to see the rest of the night and into the day tomorrow. there is the area of low pressure that produced some showers. very mild evening right now. but there goes that area of low pressure. here comes high pressure. it is going to be cooler tomorrow. but with plenty of sunshine. still a pretty nice friday out of this. then we're going to watch for the weekend.
6:19 pm
we've been talking all week about this big storm system out to the west. high pressure moves out. here is this storm that's going to bring 1 to 2 feet of snow toward the denver, colorado area. but it's what it's going to do toward the east. it's going to break apart a little bit but we are going to have some energy make its way our way late in the day on saturday. possibly into sunday. this forecast is still a very, very tough forecast so i want you to make sure you stay tuned. we aren't going to see a whole lot either way. we could see some rain and if it lasts long enough maybe even changing over to some wet snowflakes. once again, it's not going to be a big deal for this. nothing like out there where they are dealing with blizzard conditions just to the east of denver. a lot of flights canceled, too. if you're traveling through denver you may want to call ahead of time. a few clouds this evening. continued nice and breezy. 47 to about 52 degrees. tomorrow you'll wake up to a much colder morning than we've been seeing. 30 in some of the coldest suburbs to about 36 but that is still seasonably mild for this time of year. the average low? normally around 29 in the d.c.
6:20 pm
area. and we have not been below that number very much this winter. mostly sunny. not as warm tomorrow. but still above average. 47 to about 53 degrees with winds dying down to 5 to 10 miles an hour during date tomorrow. here are the next four days. 66% chance of showers late on saturday then 40% early on sunday. if it's cold enough and if we have enough moisture left over could even be a mix of precipitation there. we'll talk more about that in the next coming days and look at the extended. dry and temperatures about where they should be this time of year. so no real cold air and i keep talking about ten days from now that cold air coming in. now it's about eight days. we may see a pattern change just in time for next weekend. >> okay. >> all right. >> a lot of people at ski resorts would be really glad. >> yes. >> pretty slushy up there. still ahead a montgomery county teacher is arrested accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student. >> plus a virginia law that limits hand gun purchases to one a month may soon be history. an unusual legal strategy. a man is adopting his girlfriend

now his legal daughter and over the age of 35 she has access to his trust fund. but attorneys for the victim are skeptical of goodman's motives. >> i was flabbergasted to learn of it. >> it is definitely unusual. >> as weird as it may seem, as odd as it may seem it does look as though this is perfectly legal. >> his attorney says the adoption has nothing to do with the civil lawsuit and says it is to help stabilize the future of goodman's two biological children. a probate court is expected to rule on the legitimacy of the adoption. more testing is under way in upstate new york where 15 students are suffering from a mysterious illness that causes uncontrollable tics similar to tourette's syndrome. environmental specialists are testing a super fund cleanup site on the outskirts of le roy. a train derailed in 1970 dumping toxic chemicals that caused water and ground contamination. the site is four miles from where the students go to school. officials are trying to determine if there is any connection to the mysterious
