colorado. denver right now could see the biggest snowstorm ever in february. they need 14 inches to do so. they're at about 12 inches right now in and around the denver area but just to the west a little place called black hawk, colorado, a casino town up there. they are just west of denver. they now have 48 inches of snow and that storm system is going to make its way our way. you could see how big this storm is also bringing big time snows into nebraska, kansas seeing strong thunderstorms around kansas city. watch what happens as we move down to the south and east around oklahoma city and down toward dallas, some very big storms and some of those making their way toward indianapolis where dan hellie and jim vance are. they might see a little rain during the night tonight. current temperatures right now 50 degrees in washington. 49 in rockville. 48 in reston. these temperatures are once again key. even if we woere to see snow ovr the weekend we've been so warm i'm not too worried about much

in the way of ice on the roadways as the temperatures have been warm. once again, in a winter that has not seen much snow there is at least a chance for that snow. we'll talk more about that coming up in my full forecast in a couple minutes. >> all right. thank you, doug. the rift between the susan g. komen foundation and planned parenthood turned into a national controversy this week. tonight it's still unclear how long they'll have a future together but there is back tracking and a reversal. news 4's derrick ward has reaction to the new developments. >> reporter: the komen foundation which sponsors the race for the cure raised millions for the fight against breast cancer and gave grants to other groups like planned parenthood. the group founder told msnbc's andrea mitchell that the decision to end their funding of planned parenthood was not politically motivated. the group originally said it was because planned parenthood was the subject of a gop led investigation into its practices. now the komen foundation says such an investigation must be criminally conclusive for funding to be cut. >> i think this came as a
5:02 pm
surprise. given the fact that we're both focused on breast cancer, and in our case at planned parenthood in our health centers we conducted nearly 750,000 clinical breast exams. >> but because the group also supports abortion rights the issue only further heated the crucible of the politics of choice. support for planned parenthood from other sources actually spiked in the days following the komen announcement. some of that support came from private citizens like larry turner. >> absolutely appalled by what happened. and so i came down here and that's what it's about. >> reporter: with komen now rescinding its other decision there is back lash from the right-to-life supporters. >> susan komen foundation should stick to curing cancer and shouldn't dirty themselves with an abortion provider like planned parenthood. >> there are many issues that
5:03 pm
divide us but there are many that unify us. >> reporter: they both see racing toward a cure for breast cancer as a unifying issue and for now there is a notion that the finish line may lie on common ground. come this summer that common ground will be here on the capitol grounds, awash in a sea of pink when the komen race for the cure actually happens. will this issue be resolved? what does today's decision mean for the relationship between planned parenthood and the komen foundation? have more of that on news 4 at 6:00. we are live on the capitol grounds. derrick ward news 4. >> a dramatic couple of days. we'll see you at 6:00. news 4 viewers are sound ofg about the komen reversal on our facebook page. quote, i'm sad that sgk caved to the pressure. they had a reason for making this decision and set that aside because people weren't happy with it. james williams writes, politics and religion have no place in women's health care. guess they should have thought about that first. marvin patrick writes, originally it was claimed that

komen was bowing to political pressure. it is actually the reversal that is bowing to pressure. andrea newman, if planned parenthood was smart they would refuse the offer. sounds like there are strings attached and always the threat of them pulling the funding, again, sounds like planned parenthood got more than enough support without them. angie moore writes, totally disappointed in susan g. komen's original actions. it shows how out of touch they are with women's issues. also today a transgender woman is dead after being stabbed at bus stop. police say bystanders actually pinned down the killer but he escaped when they went to help the victim. pat collins joins us live from d.c. police homicide branch in southwest. pat? >> reporter: wendy, it's a case of murder but it is also a hate crime police are investigating. police have identified the victim as parker jones who also goes by the name.

dione or logan, a 23-year-old transgender woman murdered last night at this bus stop at 49th and east capital streets northeast. they say there was an altercation here and a man stabbed the victim in the face. an unusual getaway. sources say there was a witness and after the stabbing the witness went after the suspect, pulled him to the ground. the suspect pretended to be dead. the witness goes back to help the victim and when the witness does that, the suspect takes off. was this a hate crime? here now from homicide, lieutenant robert alder. >> at this time it is too early for us to say whether or not it's a hate crime. we are investigating it, attempting to determine what was the cause that sparked this assault. >> i talked to some of the officials at the transgender empowerment center. debby mcmillan lives in the neighborhood where it happened.

>> it lets me know that there is balance still going against transgender women and i do personally believe that this individual was targeted because they were a transgender woman. >> reporter: this act of violence has people in the neighborhood upset. wendy medley lives about a half block away. >> i don't think that just because of a person's sexual preference that they should be stereotyped and crimes should be committed on them. i don't think that's right. >> reporter: last july not too far away in the 6200 block of dick street northeast, la shea mcclain a 23-year-old transgender woman shot and killed after an exchange of words with two men. no arrests have been made in that case. now back to the bus stop murder. coming up at 6:00 we'll hear from the victim's mother. reporting live in d.c., i'm pat collins, news 4. >> all right. thank you, pat. the funeral is set for an alexandria activist who was found murdered in a well.

that is the lowest it has been in three years. employers added 243,000 new jobs in january. it is the fifth straight month that the unemployment rate has fallen. president obama and republican house speaker john boehner had the same reaction. the new numbers are good but not good enough. that may be their only point of agreement on this new report and a visit to a fire house in arlington today the president urged congress to stay out of the way of this economic recovery. >> i want to send a clear message to congress. do not slow down the recovery that we're on. don't muck it up. keep it moving in the right direction. >> so if the president really wants to get the economy moving again, really wants to improve his own chances for re-election, maybe he'll pick up the phone and call senator reed and ask senate democrats to get off their rear ends. >> speaker boehner said there are 27 jobs bills that the senate has yet to pick up. meanwhile out on the campaign

metro buses are heading to the area right now to help people get home. we'll have more as it comes into news 4. well, talk about a firestorm. today as we mentioned at the top of the newscast the susan g. komen foundation reversed a decision announced earlier this week to withdraw some grants to planned parenthood. >> and that withdrawal prompted a storm of criticism. some women's groups blamed politics. "meet the press" moderator david gregory joins us with some perspective on this. so they reversed it. >> yeah. >> how do they put that into context considering it was a policy issue that they said started the original decision? >> right. i think they totally misjudged how much opposition there would be around the country to this. you know, i was reading in california a number of the branches really lodged a very serious protest. they misjudged that i think and now they had to recalculate. the overlay of politics into this and some questions about who's running the organization
5:15 pm
and where it goes from here. i don't think that this is easily recovered from. i think there's going to be more fallout from this because it was a policy decision and about how the organizations continue to work together as we move forward. i think that was, you know, certainly not what was intended. but now they've got a bigger problem on their hands. >> it's still not over. >> i don't think so. i think the anger will persist. the decision as you say because it was a policy matter the initial decision made is continuing to make people angry. >> allegiance is shifting back and forth. how much money are we talking about? >> well, it was -- there was a number of grants that were offered, people online donating money, the mayor of new york offering $250,000. they were able to overcome their original grant money but now it becomes a principal issue and where komen is coming from and what they'll do in the future. >> let's switch to more politics. >> yes. >> we have nevada tomorrow. romney has donald trump's
5:16 pm
blessing. is that anything, does that have any legs? >> i don't think, you talk to the romney people and they say, look, people are with us and against us. you can understand that. trump might be able to help with some fund raising. it's tea party support. look for romney now to spend his time not on establishment support, not on senators and governors and what not. he needs some real conservatives. the bigger names besides donald trump are mike huckabee, michele bachmann to a lesser degree but still somebody that gets tea party attention. i think that's where he would like to really gather some momentum as well as the contest we're talking about in nevada. >> he is way up in nevada in the caucuses, polling. >> i guess neeuess nevada. i'm from california. >> we say nevada. >> she says nevada. >> you know, aunt, norfolk. whatever. >> okay. you can get away with it. >> you have a huge guest. >> we do. >> the polls show or if they stay as they are in nevada he could lose in a big way. newt gingrich is going to be
5:17 pm
with you sunday morning. >> newt gingrich will be on the program. nevada is not decisive in that sense. i think gingrich will have a money and organization problem but he wants to keep pressing until super tuesday in march. that's part of the calendar that makes it a little more favorable for him. february is tough for him. that's the difficulty. >> right. all right. good to see you. >> good to see you. big sunday. we got "meet the press" and then the caps-bruins game and then super bowl sunday. a huge weekend. i can't wait for sunday. >> get up early. >> i will. >> big pot of coffee. >> always. thanks, david. >> good to see you guys. again, david will have all the latest political news and analysis sunday morning. "meet the press" starts at 10:30 here on nbc 4 guess who is going to be up late after the game. very late. our own doug kammerer. >> david, are you going to the game, the super bowl? >> no. >> i'm happy to be -- >> you know, he can help you out with some tickets. >> i couldn't leave my kids. i like watching it on tv. if i got tickets i mean --
5:18 pm
>> kids, dad's got two tickets. can i go? sorry, buddy. >> you know what? sunday is now turning out to be a day everybody is going to enjoy watching the super bowl because i tell you what we're looking at some rain and maybe some snow in parts of the area but nothing, nothing compared to this. take a look. you might remember pictures like this from last year during snowmageddon two years ago. carmageddon last year. this is denver snowmageddon. this could be and could end up being the biggest snowstorm ever in the month of february in denver history. right now denver about a foot of snow. they need 14 inches to get to that record breaking number. just to the west of denver, how about 48 inches in toward black hawk, colorado? that is just west of denver and, wow. four feet of snow already. 50 degrees the current temperature for us right now. we are not going to see any of those travel problems in our area from that storm. but we are going to see something. we'll talk about it in a second.
5:19 pm
50 degrees right now with winds out of the northwest at 6 miles per hour. as far as the temperatures go, around the region we're currently seeing into the 50s or upper 40s to around low 50s just about everywhere and i'm going to have to step out of here just for a second as i click on to yet another map. what are we going to be seeing? you know those temperatures are going to be cooler this weekend. we'll continue to see those numbers dip down just a little bit. overnight tonight we are looking at a cooler evening. temperatures right now sitting at 45 degrees in winchester. 46 in leesburg. 48 right now in culpepper. 52 in fredericksburg. let's show you the radar. nothing on our radar screen. but as we widen out to that storm, you could see just how big it is. this is a monster storm here. but it's running into some blocking along the east that is going to allow it to really just kind of fall apart. we'll only see a piece of that energy. here is denver. it is still snowing in denver. still seeing heavy snow west of denver. once again upwards of 2 to 4 feet already. they may see a little bit more overnight. they still have the winter storm
5:20 pm
warnings in effect there. here's the area of high pressure that we're seeing today bringing us all the sunshine and the nice weather again but say good-bye to high pressure. just in time for the weekend say hello to our chances of rain. we could see rain in here as early as 5:00, 6:00 tomorrow afternoon and then i think it continues right on through the night tomorrow and we could see it change as some colder air moves down. we could see it change to a mixture of snow, sleet, and rain just to the north of washington. we're going to have to watch this very closely but this is not going to be a big deal as our temperatures have been so warm over the last couple days. clear skies this evening, looking at 43 to about 47 degrees. the next couple days here you go. those temperatures dipping down. sunday, cold. high of 43 degrees. with that chance of rain, snow in some areas. 50 degrees on monday though and rebounding nicely as we start next week. super bowl sunday, you know you'll be inside anyway with all your friends and buddies. good time to do so. >> all right. thank you, doug. still ahead "the washington post" food critic tom seitsma

>> our last question comes from robert in crofton. robert has an electric oven that currently uses regular watt light bulbs. he wants to know if he can replace them with fluorescent bulbs. >> the alliance of save energy gave us this answer and says it simply depends on the type of light bulb you are trying to replace. if it is that light bulb inside the oven, no. you cannot replace it with a cfl yet. stick with that type of incandescent bulb made for the oven but in the fan hood over the range top it is perfectly safe to use cfl, halogen, or l.e.d. bulb. some of these bulbs are specialty bulbs however and may not yet have energy efficient models to fit them. if you have questions about whether your oven range can take a cfl simply call your oven manufacturer. if you've got a question you'd like us to consider for ask liz send it to ask liz@washington.com. also on twitter and on facebook.

lose oxygen to your brain. the ultimate effect is that, you know, someone could die from this. >> reporter: students told school administrators they learned the game online while they can't access social media sites within charles county schools many are doing it at home. >> i don't know why anybody would promote something like that. >> i heard vaguely about it when i was a kid. it's very serious and alarming so hopefully kids will understand the severity of it and not do it. >> the school system has decided that students who are caught participating may face disciplinary action for interrupting the school day and their parents will be notified. in charles county i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. well, in fairfax county a teenager there got the surprise of her life today. she entered a nationwide sketch your prom dress contest and she won. 17-year-old samantha bryan is a senior and art student and entered the contest a few months

sketching a prom dress inspired by vincent van gogh's starry night. david's bridal and "17" magazine sponsored the contest and judged more than 2,000 entries and today surprised her with a big win revealing her dress and a $25,000 scholarship. her dress will also be sold at david's bridal shops starting next week. >> i always wanted to be a fashion designer since i was 11 but i didn't think i would have anything of my own in stores until i was in my 30s or even later. i always assumed it would take me so long. i'm 17. >> good for her. >> vera wang watch out. >> she says she plans to wear her dress to the prom as she should and says it's okay if other girls are wearing the dress as well. i'm sure she would love that. >> that is astonishing. >> lovely. i like the inspiration from van gogh. good for her. >> might need a coat over it this weekend. maybe an umbrella too. we got a little mix going on. >> yeah. a little bit of a mix. i think we are going to see cooler air move in for the weekend.
5:48 pm
enough of that cool air moves in, we may see some of this rain moving in late tomorrow into early sunday morning change over to some sleet. maybe some snow. i don't think it's going to be very big in the way of problems but it is still a storm to watch. this one is developing and we'll continue to watch it for you. 50 degrees the current temperature with winds out of the northwest about 6 miles per hour. nothing on the radar right now. don't expect rain on this friday evening and don't expect it tomorrow morning either. i think we still have a good 12 hours before the rain starts to move in. maybe 24 hours. storm 4 radar though showing that big storm system back to the west and this is a monster. most of it, though, will peel off and that's what will make its way our way so that monster of a storm will not make its way in here intact. that is for sure. temperatures tomorrow, a little bit cooler. 49 in washington. 47 in gaithersburg. 47 at frederick. right now looking at 48 manassas with rain coming in late in the day. there it is. lucas oil stadium where they are playing the super bowl. if you're going out there, a

al michaels getting ready to broadcast his eighth super bowl. his first in 1988. that was super bowl 22. you probably remember that one. >> the one in minnesota? >> no the redskins and the broncos. >> 42-10. >> the one where everybody lost their voice. the second quarter. >> explosion. >> oh, yeah. >> that was his first one. he said it was a great game if you're a redskins fan. terrible game if you're a broadcaster because you're not hoping for a blowout but a close game and there have been a lot of close games lately. we caught up with al michaels to find out what else he was hoping for on super bowl sunday and exactly how he gets prepared for the big game. >> there's no such thing as another super bowl. you get excited about it but again like the players you don't want to, on tuesday, start to go over the top. so in other words i will know how to get myself to the game and ready to do the game. i've been there before. that's the great benefit of having some experience. then you're excited and you want the game to be a great game.
5:52 pm
that's the key thing. and once it starts, you're kind of back in your element and we've always treated our primetime telecasts as a mini super bowl. we have a large audience on sunday night. it's the only game that's being shown on sunday night. games normally feature, you know, great teams and great individuals. and that's the way we treat it. this is just taking it up a notch. we are pretty much doing the same things we always did. and then all you want is for the game to be good, to either be close, have great plays, maybe some controversy. and all of the rest and then if you hit the all time jackpot home run it goes to overtime. >> do you feel like this is the dream matchup? obviously people say nbc must be elated to have a new york team and then new england there as well. do you feel like this is a dream matchup in the super bowl? >> i think there could have been a number of dream matchups. last year don't forget green bay played pittsburgh and that was pretty much a dream matchup. >> sure.
5:53 pm
yes this is in a way but that is not to say if green bay had got filene it, san francisco, that would have been pretty good and compelling. the thing about the super bowl is that no matter who is in it, it's a stand alone game. we did the super bowl three years ago. when the pittsburgh steelers met the arizona cardinals who of course had no history at all but here was arizona getting on this amazing run in postseason and larry fitzgerald looking like the greatest receiver in history and kurt warner and all of the rest and around the country people saying nbc really has to hate this. that wasn't the case. it turned out to be a phenomenal game maybe the best of the 45 superbowls to this point and when the ratings came out the next day more people watched that game than any show on television history. that tells you it's about the super bowl. >> and a man who knows a lot about the super bowl, joe gibbs weerks had
5:54 pm
we had a chance to chat with today. >> we learned things that were surprising as a matter of fact. was that not one of the most pleasant interluds since we've been here? that guy is totally cool. looking forward to that at 11:00. coming up at 6:00 we'll have a report on a part of town that is not on the front page of the chamber of commerce brochure but we'll report on how the tens of thousands of people there will benefit from all the hundreds of millions of dollars that are pouring into this town because of the super bowl. >> reporter: that's all coming up at 6:00. >> a busy night. thank you, guys. coming up next a local woman is accused of stalking the yankees' general manager but she says it was romantic says it was romantic relationship that went sour. il? not yet. i want to buy used but how do you know what you're really getting. check out carmax. all their used cars are guaranteed.

a woman from gaithersburg is in jail tonight accused of stalking and extorting money from yankees gm brian cashman. prosecutors say the woman has done it before but defense attorneys say cashman is not a completely innocent target. nbc's andrew siff has more. >> reporter: her name is luis meanwell although the manhattan da's office says she's also known as several aliases. prosecutors call her a serial stalker whose latest victim is the yankees general manager.
5:58 pm
court documents acknowledge he knew meanwell and even paid her $6,000 personally depositing money in her bank account at two manhattan chase branches. but court papers state he wanted to cease all contact with her, that she persisted in calling and texting over ten times in one night and that she threatened physical harm to cashman and his family unless he paid her up to 15 grand allegedly for medical expenses. >> i think it is inappropriate to comment on the case. >> reporter: defense attorney steven mccarthy acknowledged meanwell has been charged with stalking before but said a recent charge in new jersey was reduced to trespassing. her punishment? probation. >> the judge in new jersey is actually very pleased with her progress. >> reporter: in the cashman case meanwell is charged with theft, stalking, and harassment. a spokesman for the yankees executive said mr. cashman is very gratified that this matter is in the hands of law enforcement. defense attorneys argued in court this isn't a stalking case
5:59 pm
at all but instead involves a married man who had an inappropriate relationship and the manhattan da's office bought his account hook, line, and sinker. meanwell's bail has been set at $300,000. her mother was expected to post bond today but so far that hasn't happened. that's it for news 4 at 5:00. we hope your weekend is a good one. stay right there. news 4 at 6:00 starts right now. tonight the nation's largest breast cancer charity reverses its decision to cut funding for planned parenthood. >> the economy has been front and sent inner the race for the white house and new unemployment numbers could play in president obama's favor. >> and stabbed to death in a d.c. bus stop the victim's sexuality may have been a motive for murder. >> good evening everyone. i'm doreen gentzler. >> i'm wendy rieger. jim vance ness indianapolis for the super bowl. after three days of controversy
