yesterday, but there's definitely been a change in the protest here, as we can see, from yesterday. now, i want to show you video of what was going on as park police went through and did what they're calling nuisance abatement. some violent clashes began with protesters. and today, this sort of leaves a sense with the protesters, the ones that we spoke to, is that there is a sense of betrayal on the part of the park police. they say that they were told that the tents that were compliant would be left up and they say some tents that were taken down and some of the belongings that were removed were not compliant. so, it's a matter of what they define compliant as. but definitely, we talked to one of the protesters who was among those arrested yesterday, and we also talked to park police, and it speaks to a definite change in the mood of this protest. >> these are nuisance abatement enforcement of camping regulations. we've identified a large number of camp areas that have some
9:01 am
substantial public health issues. and yesterday, as we were going through some of these tents, they're in violation of the camping regulations. we found things such as urine-soaked bedding material, bottles of urine, we found a family of live rats in one tent, including dead rats. >> things definitely will be changing. i don't believe that people will be happy or believe a single thing a police officer says now, considering the lies that they had earlier in the morning. i think, as you have seen with every occupation that has had violence and brutality shown against it, there will be an upwelling of support. >> reporter: so, what we are told now is that a lot of the protesters who were here yesterday and who have been here have now moved to freedom plaza. there have been a few that have remained on the scene here. we're told that the protest is actually not being stopped or abera abated here. they're working in sections of the park to clear those so-called nuisances that they say they have, and then they
9:02 am
will be allowed back in. now, so, a large contingent of the protesters have moved to freedom plaza for now, but there is a library here that is staffed by protesters, and there is a handful that have stayed on to sort of watch what's going on here at mcpherson square. we're live at mcpherson square, derrick ward, news 4. >> thanks for the update. and turning our eyes to the weather now. >> yes. >> saw a lot of snowflakes coming on in. are there some just lingering around still? >> there are, yes, indeed, snowflakes aflying out there, mainly in northern maryland, towards the mountains of west virginia for now. that little sliver of snowflakes, though, is working its way down the 270 corridor, so don't give up hope yet. just don't count on getting a lot of snow out of this. just conversational snowflakes on a sunday morning, full of cloud cover here in washington. temperature now nosing in on 40 degrees. it's 39 officially at national airport, 40 degrees in annapolis, 39 at patuxent river naval air station, 37
9:03 am
fredericksburg. north of the viewing area, temperatures are just above freezing, as you can see on storm 4 radar. there is a band of light snow, moderate at times, but it isn't adding up to too much. it is rewhitening the ground across parts of frederick county, out towards hagerstown this morning. not sticking to any of the roads. a lot of my twitter followers, @chuckbell4, if you want to be one of them, have reported that the ground has got a fresh little coating and some white up there in frederick county, towards hagerstown as well, northern carroll county, west american minster, maryland. that's sinking down the 270 corridor, so we'll have another chance for some light snow. but as that little band of snow gets closer to washington itself, temperatures are close to 40 degrees. so, i have a feeling that most of that is going to turn over to rain drops and snowflakes mixed in, and that is literally the last game in town before a dry super bowl sunday afternoon kicks off. so, rain mixing in with some snowflakes here for the rest of the morning. that should all be done by about noontime, maybe a little sooner in northern maryland, maybe a little longer into southern
9:04 am
maryland. those should just be rain drops. then we should see clearing late in the day, temperatures well above freezing today. so not expecting any real problems on the roads today or in the early evening hours tonight. early tomorrow, some spots in maryland will be far enough below freezing, you could have a little slipperiness in the morning, but tomorrow afternoon, sunshine and temperatures near 50. that will pretty much be the end of that. >> wow. looking up again. >> yes, indeed. >> all right, thank you, chuck. >> you're welcome. well, the results are in and it is a clear victory in "decision 2012" this morning. mitt romney won the nevada caucuses with 48% of the vote. newt gingrich finished second with 23%. ron paul was next with 19%, followed by rick santorum with 11%. >> the results from nevada and florida give romney back-to-back victories in the republican race for president. he celebrated with campaign supporters last night in las vegas. >> now, this is not the first
9:05 am
time you gave me your vote of confidence, and this time, i'm going to take it to the white house. >> this is the first major contest in the west for the candidates. romney swept nearly every voting group in nevada, including tea party activists and voters who describe themselves as extremely conservative. in his speech last night, romney talked about the economy and said president obama should not claim credit for an improving jobs picture. >> and if you take into account all the people who are struggling for work or just stopped looking, the real unemployment rate is over 15%. mr. president, america has also had enough of your kind of help. >> newt gingrich says he'll campaign all the way to the convention in august and catch up to romney by april. well, the win in nevada puts romney well ahead in the
9:06 am
delegate count. it will take 1,144 delegates to win the republican presidential nomination. romney has 97 total this morning, gingrich has 30 delegates so far, santorum has 16 and ron paul has 7. and we got some perspective on the gop presidential race earlier this morning with "meet the press" moderator david gregory. he said he doesn't see gingrich dropping out any time soon. >> his strategy right now is to raise enough money, make enough noise, create a path to try to get to super tuesday, where he thinks he's got the opportunity to win some southern states and then get new momentum to keep this going until the convention. what he's going to have to do, and i think a lot of this is driven by some personal enmity on the part of gingrich for romney, is make two arguments -- one, that romney is simply disqualified from being the nominee when you think about the fall, and that he, gingrich, has a kind of conservative vision and platform that's distinctly
9:07 am
different than romney's, as we move into a general election. >> newt gingrich will be a guest on "meet the press" later this morning. you can see that right here on nbc 4 at 10:30. and the candidates have a busy week of races ahead in the next week alone. on tuesday, both colorado and minnesota will hold their caucuses. then, right after that is another caucus next saturday in maine. chris? thank you, angie. prince george's county fire investigators are trying to figure out why a smoke alarm did not go off when a fire started at a senior citizen assisted living facility. two police officers passing by saw smoke coming from the building on berwyn house road in college park yesterday afternoon. they ran into the apartment, which was on fire, without any protective gear. a water sprinkler extinguished parts of the fire before firefighters showed up, but no alarm ever sounded. luckily, no one was inside. investigators believe an unattended candle caused the fire. no one was hurt.

in other news this morning an anne arundel county police officer is suspded, accused of warning suspected drug dealers about a raid. police say corporal rick alexander knew drug dealers at a home on juniper street in shady side. investigators say alexander called the house moments before officers showed up to serve a search warrant. >> that's what prompted them to take the drugs out of the home and hide it at a different location, which again, we were ultimately able to locate at a later time. >> investigators say about $830 worth of marijuana and cocaine were moved. alexander faces charges of obstruction and conspiracy to distribute. he is currently out on bail. the murder trial of former virginia lacrosse player george huguely is set to start tomorrow in charlottesville, virginia. huguely is accused of killing his former girlfriend, ayeardle love, in may of 2010.

now, which is always welcome news for those of us that are snow-starved a little bit this winter. >> yes. >> but don't count on this one being the big one, you know? kids, this is not going to be a canceling school event. so, if you've got homework that's due tomorrow, get busy, because you know you're going to want to watch the game right here on channel 4 later today. so get that homework, get your history paper written immediately, as the snowflakes out there in northern maryland will not get you out of school on tomorrow. outside we go, then, a cloudy sky here in washington, temperature well above freezing here in town, so this little band of snowflakes that's coming down from northern maryland heading into the city over the next couple of hours, i suspect, will be converted to rain drops for most, if not all, of the immediate metro area. right now, cloudy skies and well above freezing. 39 degrees now at national airport, winds out of the north at 12 miles per hour. and that weather band of snow sneaking its way down closer to the metro area, but look at these temperatures. 37 at andrews air force base, 38

in ft. belvoir, 38 manassas, 34 restin, 35 in falls church this morning. even up across northern maryland, where it is snowing, temperatures are only just at the freezing mark. so, again, this is not going to add up to too much, rain and some snow off and on through much of the late morning, done by noontime and then a little clearing taking place. there is the back end of the snow right there just now coming over the pennsylvania border. that will be the last of the last of it for this whole series of little events that we've had this weekend. but it is enough to rewhiten the ground now along interstate 70 and 270 here, through frederick county, out towards hagerstown. so, be careful this morning, even though the roads are generally above freezing. we're not seeing much sticking to the big roads. sometimes the side streets and a sidewalk here and there might be a little slippery, so just be careful this morning. this is going to come right down the 270 corridor, and as i said, temperatures are far enough above freezing where as it gets down into and south of the city, like southern maryland here, i think that will mostly be a hit of very, very light rain as high pressure builds in, pushes the
9:21 am
drier air further and further south. that will turn off all the precipitation shortly, and eventually, it might even lead to a peek or two of sunshine very late this afternoon. skies will clear out for the most part overnight tonight. we'll be left with a mostly sunny day tomorrow. as we get into tuesday morning, again, still a mostly clear sky, temperatures holding in the upper 30s and low 40s today but back near 50 tomorrow. here we are in our future weather, up close and personal. there's a little band of snow through 9:00, 10:00 this morning. but watch that. as we get towards noontime today, all that snow disappearing and a peek or two of sunshine headed our way. for today, rain and snow coming to an end. otherwise, cloudy and chilly, a break or two of sun, that's it. highs today upper 30s and low 40s. tomorrow, mostly sunny, a good bit warmer and highs back up into the upper 40s and low 50s. same story again for tuesday. next little weather event we're keeping an eye on will be late wednesday and wednesday night. it's probably like the last several, probably going to be mostly rain drops, but i can't completely rule out we couldn't have a few snowflakes in the

angie. good morning, everyone. we're just outside lucas oil stadium, where we expect in the next couple hours we'll start to see lots of crowds, just like we've seen all weekend. keep this in mind, just under 70,000 people can fit in this stadium, but hundreds of thousands of people have come to indianapolis to be around the nfl atmosphere. the nfl experience and the super bowl village. and we've seen those crowds. last night wasn't so bad. they've been coming down for free concerts and other activities. but on friday night, it was described as a mob scene. there were 11 people who got injured. fortunately, not too badly. there were 22 people who were arrested. and you know, when you consider hundreds of thousands of people, those numbers really don't look too bad. now, back to today, getting into the stadium. got to have a plan, just like a game plan. you've got to have a game plan to get into the stadium today. traffic is going to be tight around here. they've got colored traffic zones all around the area. just walking to the stadium is

the super bowl, which is in indianapolis, our hometown, just is amazing and it's going to be something special that we hold with us for the rest of our lives. >> well, the players said they might even use some of the plays from the pros in their high school games next season. right now, salvage teams are working to remove fuel from a cruise ship disaster off the coast of italy. the "costa concordia" hit a reef nearly a month ago and has been partially capsized ever since. there are more than 500,000 gallons of fuel on board that could threaten a nearby island. officials say it could take between seven and ten months to remove all of the fuel. the disaster killed 17 people. more than a dozen others are still missing. well, more violence this morning in syria. the death toll continues to mount in the nearly year-long uprising there. >> now, this comes as the china and russia blocked any u.n. action against syria. we have this nbc report

especially for news 4 from cairo with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, angie and chris. the united nations vote yesterday in new york has drawn strong condemnation from many countries here in the region and some support. inside syria, supporters of president bashar al assad took to the streets to thank the russians and the chinese for their veto, but all of this happening against the backdrop of continued violence all across the country on sunday, particularly in that city of homs, where activists say on friday there was a massacre that killed more than 200 people. here in cairo, the arab league, which has been leading the charge in trying to solve this conflict, says it is not deterred by the outcome of the united nations security council vote. it will renew its efforts to try to call on president bashar al assad to step aside from power and resolve this peacefully without any international intervention. not one member of the arab league, which was the birthplace of the arab spring, if you will, tunisia, it has cut off diplomatic ties with syria, but no indication so far that the

investigators say equipment malfunction caused this huge explosion at a propane facility. it happened friday near madison, wisconsin. a truck driver was filling his tanker with propane from a holding tank when a hose somehow got disconnected. the blast shook the ground for miles and flames, as you saw, shot some 20 to 30 feet up in the air. amazingly, though, no one was hurt. well, the improving economy means you'll have to pay more for a car. according to the national automobile dealers association, the average price of a new car is expected to go up 6% to $30,000. used cars are expected to rise 1%, while pick-ups and suvs could go up as much as 8%. also, more people will be buying luxury cars. overall, u.s. vehicle sales are expected to go up 9% to almost $14 million this year. a powerful winter storm is making its mark across the

midwest. check out the road trouble this system is causing in nebraska. cars having trouble getting traction and slippery streets are contributing to a number of accidents there. the same system dumped more than two feet of snow in colorado. and in addition to the snow and cold temperatures, high winds knocked out power to more than 10,000 customers. >> now, that is a snow event. >> yeah. >> that is a weather event. not here. >> not here. it was so much snow that it actually set a snow record in denver, of all places. when you start setting snow records in places like denver -- >> wow. >> -- now, you've done something there. more than 15 inches of snow, their greatest february snowstorm on record in denver. >> wow. >> so, that's a ton of snow out there. and obviously, the high spots out north and west of there, ski resorts loving it. >> i'm sure. >> four and five feet of snow in some of the favorite spots out there, so lots of snow for them. snow you saw in omaha, nebraska. you're saying can we get any of that here? no! no, we cannot! >> okay. >> no matter what i do, no

matter what i say, i can't actually make it happen, for better or for worse. outside, we've just got a cloudy sky for now. we do actually have snow on the radar. i'll show you that in just a second. it's close by, too, and it's nearing in. it's just not going to last or add up to too terribly too much. cloudy skies, temperature comfortably above the freezing mark for snow haters in the washington area. 39 degrees now at national airport. winds out of the north at 12 miles per hour and temperatures right around the heart of the metro area well above freezing. now, we had a little band of snow in northern maryland that's going to be coming down through the metro area here over the next couple hours. but with temperatures this far above freezing, i suspect most of those snowflakes will change over to rain drops as it moves in. snowing now in hagerstown at 32 degrees, but that's going to be about the end of the snow. so, the rest of your super bowl sunday planner, by about 1:00 this afternoon everything should be done. by about 6:00, when the game is kicking off, skies will be clearing out a little bit, temperature 41 degrees. and at 11:00, when everyone is driving safely and soberly home from their super bowl parties,
9:48 am
hopefully, temperatures back down into the upper 30s. so, here we go. here it is on radar. there's that last little band of snow showers, those sagging its way southward on to the northern parts of interstate 270 now, but you can already get a sense that this over here is light rain now, northern anne arundel county. and i think as most of this little band of snow drives down into the washington area, it will change back over to mostly just rain drops, but there will be a few conversational snowflakes mixed on in. it's whitened the ground up here across northern maryland. that's just about it. mostly just light rain now getting ready to move back into annapolis and a few folks in southern maryland. spritzes and sprinkles down across much of calvert county. this whole band of light precipitation is going to go grazing down through here over about the next one to two hours or so, and there's already sunshine breaking out in places like pittsburgh, pennsylvania. so, high pressure pushing the drier air down into the area. that will turn off the rain and the snow and clear the skies out late tonight. back to work and school tomorrow, plenty of sunshine, temperatures tomorrow about a ten-degree improvement over
