indianapolis right here on nbc in a thrilling game that wasn't decided until the game's very last game. here's nbc's mario solis. good morning. four years ago the giants needed a remarkable catch and a late touchdown to beat the patriots to win the super bowl. last night it was day shah ju all over again or should i say day ja blue. giants trailing late in the fourth when eli manning hits mario manning ham. somehow, some way he makes the catch and stays inbound to keep the drive alive. that sets up this. lamont bradshaw with minute to play. giants rally once again to beat the pats in super bowl 46, 21-17. we'll have much more on the giants super bowl win ahead in sports. for now, back to you, lynn. elsewhere mitt romney hopes to keep his winning streak alive as the republican presidential con tenltders move on from

nevada. after a big loss to romney saturday, newt gingrich says he's still charging ahead with his campaign. nbc's brian mooar joining us from washington with the latest. brian, good morning. >> good morning, lynn. the story within the story is that las vegas is still counting caucus votes. with 90% of the voting in, mitt romney has a big win, right around 50%. newt gingrich coming in second with 21. ron paul right behind with 19%. it's not just that mitt romney won. it's how he won. a broad-based coalition of the very conservative, which chips away newt gingrich's argument that he is the conservative candidate. at this point gingrich looking to count up as many delegates he has rather than win a lot of states. another chance tomorrow as colorado, minnesota, and missouri hold their presidential contest. but mihm at this point looking every bit the front-runner. ron paul had counted on the caucus states.

he is in trouble now, as is rick santorum, who finished fourth place in nevada. lynn? >> brian mooar for us there in washington. brian, thanks so much. well, the two-year long story of a missing mother took a horrifying twist yesterday in washington state after a powerful house explosion killed three in what authorities are saying is a deliberate act. more now from nbc's francis kuo very earlier in the day a social worker with child protective services had arrived with powell'sing two sons. the house exploded killing powell and both of the children. police say this is no accident. >> we believe it was intentional start of the fire because it was scheduled visitation. >> reporter: this is just the latest twist in a two-year long saga in the search of susan powell, josh's missing wife.

she was reported missing. her husband told detectives he had taken the 2 and 4-year-old sons camping. detectives could never approve or dispreev his story and he became a person of in interest in the case. for months on end they searched the powells' neighborhood even isolated areas, hoping to find a trace of the 28-year-old mother. he told the press susan may have run off with another man but her family called the accusations ludicrous saying she's never leave her children. last september josh powell's father was arrested for several charges. following that arrest, custody of the powell children who had been living in the same house was given to susan's parents. just days ago the judge denied josh powell's attempt to regain custody of the children. now a tragic end with no real answers and a community and family in mourning.

frances kuo, nbc news. >> now for a look at other stories making news early today in america. it's hard to believe no one was seriously hurt after a small plane crashed into a montana home. three people were aboard. witnesses say the plane hit some trees before slamming into the house. the homeowner was there at the time, but everyone walked away from the crash. in wisconsin a propane explosion was captured on video. >> oh, my god! >> now, it happened at a propane facility near madison after a truck driver filling his tanker had a malfunction which caused the hose to break lose. the blast shook the ground for miles around, but no one was injured. in california, a car dealership left the motor running on a toyota camry and then left it alone. a man walking by took full advantage making sure no one was around before he just took off with the car.

police chased the man until he crash and kept going for another block until he was captured. and, finally, proof that even black magic couldn't save the new england patriots last night. sorry guys. a group of which, where else, salem, massachusetts, tried to cast a victory spell on the team. they've had an inflatable tom brady watching ore them. but in the end, only the giants had the winning spirit or spirits. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's nbc meteorologist todd santos. he has your weather channel forecast. good morning. bill has a little time off or super bowl hangover maybe. >> isn't that the big deal. people are going to be calling in sick? >> probably. don't get suspicious. >> not at all. bill at least scheduled this one. i want to at least take a look across the country. a fairly quiet setup for this monday, which is great news for those of you kind of dragging yourself into work. but there are only a few areas

called the veto a travesty. the son of transportation secretary ray lahood is among 19 americaning facing trial in an egyptian criminal court for allegedly being involved in banned activities. egypts military rulers accuse foreign hands of being behind protests against them. meanwhile egypts military government promising to move out the president. sails as clashes increase. demonstrators were hurling rocks and broken tiles. and england's queen ee liz bektd celebrates 60 years today. she said she felt deeply moved by the support shown for the anniversary. two official photographs were released to mark the occasion. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,862 after rising 156 points on friday. the s&p climbed 19 points.

the nasdaq rose 45. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei gained 97 points while in hong kong the hang seng added 47. the surprisingly strong jobs data on friday and a few important economic reports could keep the markets continuing their surge this week. coca-cola will report earnings this week, along with more than 60 other s&p 500 stocks including disney. and we'll hear from ben bernanke in a session tuesday. the unemployment rate falling to 8.3% is likely good for asia pushing for consumer products. there's a deadline for state officials to sign on a landmark multi billion dollar assessment for foreclosure abuses. >> the department of homeland security might get the power to regulate the cyber security if companies in critical industries

like electricity and water. boeing is inspecting its newest plane, the 787 dreamliner for cargo problems. china has banned its airlines for paying charges for carbon emissions imposed by the european union which took effect last month. air france says it plans to maintain more than 80% of its flights as they start a walkout. three political figures in greece walked out but will resume negotiations today. and wall street may be happy with the giants' super bowl win since the so-called super bowl indicator supposedly means that since an nfc team won, the stock market will produce significant gains for the year. all right. we'll take that. coming up, the most reluctant winning touchdown in super bowl history, and hear

wood head after madonna was done doing her thing at halftime, tom brady goes back to work in third, connecting with aaron hernandez in the middle. the pats flex their muscle and take a 17-9 lead. the giants would stick around with a pair of field goals, and we now move to the fourth. new york down two, needing a first down. manning tosses one up to manning hamilton and he catches it. he hauls it in. that's a remarkable catch down the sidelines. the longest play of the super bowl, and the g-men were back to business. under a minute to play, the pats let bradshaw score the go-ahead touchdown. giants up 17 with the pats needing a miracle. last play of the game, it falls and completes. a thrilling end to super bowl xlvi, eli manning wins the mvp award as the giants hold on to beemt the patriots, 21-17. >> i'm proud of the guys, proud of the team, the way we fought all year. never got discouraged, kept our

welcome to "news4 today" for this monday, february 6, 2011. today jury selection begins in the trial against the former university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his girlfriend. george huguely was arrested in may of 2010 after his girlfriend, yeardley love, was found dead in her apartment. prosecutors argue george huguely shook and slammed love's head into a wall killing her during a confrontation. but the defense says she may have died from a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol. george huguely faces first degree murder and robbery charges. he could face life in prison if convicted. the trial is expected to last two weeks. a former d.c. mayoral candidate will go on trial today accused of driving without a drivers license. solomon brown's attorney says he was treated unfairly. the traffic charges come as federal authorities continue to investigate a hiring scandal
