11:01 am
now, more breaking traffic news. what's going on? >> we have two situations, the first one inner loop of the beltway you cannot connect to i-95 southbound right now. we have an accident involving a tractor-trailer, also a van that was on fire. the fire is out but right now again southbound i-95, this ramp is completely blocked. the second incident inner loop of the beltway as you approach the interchange, you have an accident that's on the right side of the roadway there taking away it would have your right lanes and you are jammed at van dorn street. i'll keep watching for you all morning long but again can you not get on i-95 southbound from the inner loop of the beltway. back to you. police are back this morning at mcpherson square after the weekend brought about big changes for occupy d.c. parks police entered the camp saturday morning at 5:30. over the weekend they arrested 11 protesters, including one
11:02 am
that threw a brick at an officer seen in this exclusive video. they also cleared out many of the tents that stood at the camp for months. news4's megan mcgrath joins us now from mcpherson square. >> reporter: it really does look a lot different. where i'm standing used to be covered, pretty much every square inch, by tents. can you see most of the tents in fact here at mcpherson square have been removed and the enforcement effort continues. let's pan over here and show you live here, you can see police officers are removing a tent that was here along right at the base of this tree. they went inside, they looked inside. there were some personal belongings and things which are against the rules. they began to remove this tent and there was a dead rat inside, a couple of live rats came scrambling out as they began to take it down here. now you can see that things are very different, not the same situation as what we were seeing on friday. frankly, the folks who work in this area are really hoping the people we talked to today that
11:03 am
things are going to soon get back to normal. park service workers emptied crash cans in mcpherson square this morning. their job is easier than it has been in months. gone are most of the occupy d.c. protesters. police cleared away many of the tents over the weekend. >> it's a mess. >> reporter: this man walks through mcpherson square every day on his way to work. he's glad the occupy camp has been whittled down in size. >> seemed like it was getting more and more out of control. i can understand people wanting to protest and that, but this is just getting to be too much. >> reporter: but not all of the tents are gone. those that were free of bedding an personal belongings were allowed to stay. there were a few protesters keeping vigil early this morning, but nothing like the numbers seen over the last five months. park police continue to monitor the square looking for anyone who violates the no-camping rule. but people who work in the area are hopeful that things will soon get back to normal.
11:04 am
>> i actually like the smaller presence because it's not as much stuff going on so i don't think there will be as many police down here. >> reporter: area businesses are also hoping for a return to pre-occupy days. sam kim of saxby's coffee says there was sometimes tension between his regular customers and protesters. >> they gathering around, fooling around inside. so regular customers doesn't like it. >> reporter: while the large-scale occupy camp is gone, cleaning up mcpherson square will take some time. crews hauled away the metal fencing used during this weekend's enforcement effort, but restoring the grass and landscaping, that's a much larger job. >> it's sad that the park service spent a half million dollars restoring the park just last year and i want people to protest and i want to respect free speech, but the park is sure a mess.
11:05 am
>> reporter: and you can see right now, police officer is holding up what remains of a dead rat that was found inside this tent. this particular tent has been declared a biohazard. they're putting it into a bag and the tent and all of the contents found inside it will be thrown away because, again, they just determined that it is a biohazard because of the rats that were found inside of it. now people who are just in violation, people who have tents that have bedding inside, the procedure for that is that they will tag the items inside, they'll take them away, they'll tale them from the square but you can come and claim those items at a later time. again can you see the enforcement effort here continues. live from mcpherson square, megan mcgrath, news4. it was a wild night for fans of both the giants and patriots. police in massachusetts arrested 14 people after crowds got unruly after the super bowl. they threw smoke bombs to get the crowds to disperse. luckily there were no serious

"the washington post" survey found that for the first time president obama holds a clear edge over republican front-runner mitt romney. 51% of voters say they would re-elect the president compared to 45% for romney. those numbers have been much closer in earlier polls. gop presidential hopefuls are in two states today looking for a way to cut into romney's need. after another convincing win in nevada on saturday. voters will caucus in colorado and minnesota tomorrow and results from maine's week-long caucus will be announced on saturday. newt gingrich who suffered a second straight double-digit loss says he's banking on super tuesday to keep him in step with romney. >> we want to get to georgia, to alabama, to tennessee, we want
11:17 am
to get to states, texas, we believe by the time texas is over we'll be very, very competitive in delegate count and i think that the key from my standpoint is to make this a big choice campaign. >> gingrich says he also plans to paint himself as the blue collar candidate compared to romney who he says is the least of touch. the weather, it is still beautiful out. >> if you like invigorating, crisp, winter weather, we have it. now let's think back, two years ago where were you. you were probably hunkered inside your home and watching nbc 4 as we were doing coverage of snowmageddon. this was the scene back on february 6th 2010. our region was buried by as much as 30 inches of snow. it all started on february 5th, the day before.
11:18 am
that was a friday at about 11:00 in the morning, and then it continued and it snowed for 28 hours. look at georgetown. not a car in sight. the best way to get around -- on your skis. that was quite a storm. we had wind that whipped up 40 to 50 miles an hour. that was two years ago today, snowmageddon 2010. well, it is a big difference here today. no snow in sight. we have a beautiful blue sky. 44 at reagan national now. breeze out of the south off the river, windchill there at 40. as we look at other temperatures now it has climbed into the 40s throughout the entire region from the blue ridge east to the bay, eastern shore, farther west though just near 40 degrees, shenandoah valley, 30s out of the mountains and over the last 12 hours high pressure in place giving us plenty of sunshine and it will be in place here for the next day or so, all the way into tuesday evening we'll have a clear sky. this is going forward now and we will have maybe just a few high clouds drifting in by late tuesday night. then during the day on wednesday a weak area of low pressure
11:19 am

11:20 am
lows upper 20s. more of the same on friday, though there may be more cloud around on friday. then some much colder weather moves in for next weekend saturday and sunday, frigid in the mornings. mid 20s saturday morning. saturday afternoon near 40. only in the teens maybe on sunday morning. sunday afternoon only in the 30s but we'll have sunshine over the weekend. >> you don't see anything like snowmageddon in our near future. >> no. we got enough snow for many winters just in that one storm. >> i bet there are snow lover wishing we could get some for 2012. >> maybe a little bit. thank you, tom. let's check in and see how things are moving on the roads. >> good morning. we still have this situation on i-95, completely shut down. the ramp is. this is from the inner loop of the beltway. chopper shot this video a few moments ago. the accident involves a tractor-trailer and a van clearly on fire. right now they're still clearing this accident. if you're taking the inner loop of the beltway you cannot get on to i-95 south.
11:21 am
we have another accident. i have a map of that accident. the second accident also on the inner loop of the beltway. this is just as you pass van dorn street. right now it is blocking two of your right lanes and you're still very slow. this is a live look at van dorn. lanes are packed. expect delays. your travel speed right now, 21 miles per hour. back to you. 11:21 is our time right now. still ahead on "news4 midday," we'll help you get ready for valentine's day with some gift ideas and we'll test that saying "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach." we have some ideas for a romantic meal. but first, here's a look at what's hot on nbcwashington.com.
11:24 am
valentine's day is just about a week away now. today we are giving those who believe the way to a map's heart is through his stomach a few ideas. 100 delicious recipes for every occasion's author joins us with a truly special occasion meal. good morning. thanks for joining us. we're going to make a gift for a man. >> i think gift foods should have a nice presentation. that's what my book is about. >> "gourmet gifts." it is all about how they are presented. anybody can cook something but
11:25 am
it's how you present it that makes it -- >> right. giving them more sophisticated recipes so it is not just a bag of cookies. this is one of the recipes from the book. >> let's now tell everybody what's going to go in this in case they want to make it. i'm going to read the ingredients quickly. 34 branches of fresh dill. two wild salmon filets. three-quarter cups granulated sugar, five tablespoons of turninado sugar. get us started. >> this is so easy. you don't need a kitchen to do this. no stove. you need a refrigerator and some patience. >> you're mixing everything together. >> everything together in a bowl. >> have you chopped the -- >> no, i'm going to show you that in a second. this is the dry dill. this is the swedish dish. it's been around since the 14th century and it is a cured salmon. anybody that brined their turkey
11:26 am
for thank giving will know what i am talking about and we have to have wild salmon because the texture is so much firmer than the farm. i mean there are a whole lot of health issues, too, but we won't go into that. this is much better for you. all i'm doing is i have two matching filets, like a book, they match. you take this mixture of all that salt and sugar and you rub it in just like you're brining or curing something. that's where the name comes from. grav means buried and it is buried in salt and sugar. gravlax. and there is always a fat and thin side to a fish so you take a fat side and put it to a thin side. so then it is nice and level. okay? and then this is half of that wonderful dill. we have so much of the fresh dill. so you're going to take this, put it in the dish, put some more salt on top but now all
11:27 am
you're going to do is put the rest of all this dill -- that's a lot of dill but you'll see in the finished product -- >> 30 full branches of fresh dill. >> yeah. you put all that on there. then all you do is you weight it down. this is very important. so i always use just another smaller pyrex dish. i put some canned goods in there. put it in the frinl fdge for at least 36 hours. turn it, 36 more hours. so it takes a few days. >> if you're going to make this, you better start right now. >> yes. this is when it is finished, see how the dill has really diminished and wilted down? and then you take this, you wipe it off, get as much of your dill off of that as you can, leave the skin on. that's what holds it intact. then you can wrap it in some parchment paper to make a picnic basket. here's the nice present for a guy.
11:28 am
they don't like anything too girly for valentine's day. you're going to have to keep it cold. a creole is a fisherman's basket. >> i'll have a source on my beb site for them. >> is this vodka? >> instead of using ugly ice packs, i froze vodka in use cubes and this keeps the salmon cold and gives you something to drink when you get there. >> what a great idea. a lovely gift. thank you for joining us. a lot of people probably want to do this. they can it find it on our website. if they didn't write down the recipe as you were giving it, nbcwashington.com. thanks again. it is 11:28. in the next half-hour of "news4 midday," another reason to slow down in the area. the latest speed camera to be turned on in our area. plus money saving tips from our viewers. we've got those for you. and after a very cold morning, tom kierein lets us know what to expect for the rest of the week.
11:30 am

11:32 am
jury selection has started in the trial of a university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his exgirlfriend. george huguely faces first degree murder in the may 2010 death of yeardley love. the trial is expected to last about two weeks. we are learning new details into what happened before a house exploded killing a man and his two kid. police say the husband of a missing woman intentionally caused the explosion and fire. authorities in washington state say josh powell and his two young sons, aged 5 and 7, died when his house exploded on sunday afternoon. powell's wife susan disappeared in utah in 2009. the lawyer for susan's parent said the oldest boy recently remembered that they had gone camping and that mommy was in the trunk. mom and dad got out of the car and mom disappeared is what he said. this morning on the "today" show susan's brother tells ann curry how the boys began talking more. >> what we saw over the last six
11:33 am
months or so was a transition in charlie and braden where they were becoming more fun, more vocal. they were acting like little boys again which we hadn't seen for a while. yeah. yeah. the specific story you are talking about is one that we were aware of and i imagine the part of josh's motivation was what could he do to hide that story to avoid having to deal with the consequences of the things he had done. >> a child protective services worker brought the two boys to the home for supervised visit when it exploded. powell's attorney says his client sent an e-mail just before the explosion saying, "i'm sorry, good-bye." a hearing today will consider if the man accused of the tucson shootings is competent to stand trial. right now jared lee loughner is getting court ordered mental health treatment in prison. investigators say he opened fire outside a grocery store last year killing six people and wounding 13 others, including
11:34 am
congresswoman gabrielle giffords. loughner will not be at today's hearing. maryland authorities say they've dropped murder charges against two teens who allegedly stabbed a man to death last year in riverdale. "the washington post" reports that prosecutors say they had no choice but to drop the charges against marcus ferguson and kenneth gales. they were charged with murder. police say they stabbed a 74-year-old man to death after trying to rob him. authorities say there was a welcome of evidence though in this case. a reminder for drivers in prince george's county -- slow down in school zones. not only is it dangerous, it will cost you. today police will act visit new speed cameras near the intersection of kenhill drive and fair lane. the cameras will operate between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. news4's tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: so the problem's been speeding around the mid school here and now the city has a solution.
11:35 am
the speed limit is 25 miles per hour in this school zone but -- you wouldn't know it. it's been a problem with people speeding through here? >> absolutely. absolutely. and it really doesn't seem like anybody's too concerned that there's children walking out. >> reporter: the police department has added two new state cameras near the middle school. these are the seventh set of camera to be placed near a school as part of the city's safe speed program. >> speed cameras, you either love the idea or hate the idea but i don't think anybody can argue their effectiveness. >> reporter: when police study traffic patterns near the school, they found 600 violations in one day with drivers going faster than 37 miles per hour. in 2011, there were six accidents here, one involving a pedestrian in a cross walk. the chief says the city is seeing a dramatic drop in speeding in areas where cameras have been placed. now you is expecting the same near the school. so are parents. >> this is a very busy road in bowie and it will slow things
11:36 am
down quite a bit. >> i love it. because our kids are more important to us than speeding, getting to work on time. leave early. >> if you don't want the ticket, then don't speed. it is very simple. we do our best to make sure that everybody knows where these cameras are and the hours of operation so it is definitely not a get cha kind of situation. >> reporter: people who are going 12 miles over the speed limit will receive a ticket. it is a $40 fine and these cameras are operational even when school's closed. in bowie, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. we're going to check in again now with tom kierein for the latest on our forecast. >> good morning. we're beginning to warm up after a very cold start. we were down into the low and mid 20s this morning and now with that bright sun and a southwesterly breeze we're beginning to warm up. that's a live view from sky watcher camera looking into fairfax county. the temperatures there are into the mid 40s now. also mid 40s in montgomery county, prince george's and arlington and the district of columbia. southern maryland, northern
