himself and their two young children. after two years of questioning and searching a horrifying ending. good afternoon. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. authorities in washington state say josh powell intentionally caused the explosion at his home that claimed the life of his two sons and his own life. powell has been considered a person of interest since his wife susan disappeared in 2009. >> reporter: firefighters sift through the rubble of the home where police say josh powell set off an explosion that killed himself and his two young sons. >> it was definitely a gas boom. >> reporter: the house went up in flames sunday moments after the boys arrived with a social worker for their scheduled visit. police say powell opened the front door, let the children in, then blocked the social worker from entering. moments later the smell of gas then fire raged through the home. >> we believe he intentionally started the fire because it was

a scheduled visitation. >> reporter: moments before the blast josh sent his lawyer a three word e-mail saying i'm sorry good-bye. it is the latest twist in the two-year saga in the search for susan cox powell, josh's wife who disappeared in december of 2009. police labeled him as a person of interest in her disappearance, but he was never charged. josh had been locked in a bitter custody battle with susan's parents who were given custody of the last september after josh's father steven was arrested on child pornography and voyeurism charges. police discovered thousands of pornographic images of children on steven computer in the home where he lived with josh and the boys. susan's parents haven't spoken publicly but released a statement saying, quote, words cannot adequately express the grief. first susan and now charlie and braden. >> this was a horrible murder of two little kids. let's not dress it up. let's not sanitize it. let's call it what it is. which is something deeply wrong, which is not a tragedy, which is

something evil. >> and a bitter end to a two-year ordeal with no real answers and a community and family in mourning. authorities from west valley, utah will be here to continue their investigation into the disappearance of susan cox powell. meanwhile, josh's father steven powell remains jailed on child porn charges under suicide watch. in washington, stephany stanton, news 4. >> a lawyer for the cox family says one of the children was beginning to verbalize what happened during the camping trip in 2009. the child allegedly told a lawyer that his mother was in the trunk of the family car before she disappeared. after a year and a half of investigating and legal maneuvering the trial of the uva la crosse player charged with murder is now under way in charlottesville. george huguely is accused in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend yardly love. a player on the women's team she was found dead in her apartment back in may of 2010.

before today's proceedings began huguely pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him including first-degree murder. the court is now sifting through the pool of potential jurors. 12 jurors will be selected along with three alternates. the trial is set to last about two weeks. today is the last time huguely has been in court for this case. julie carey will have more on this coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 tonight. there is a major diplomatic development concerning the ongoing crisis in syria. today the u.s. embassy in damascus closed. the ambassador and all u.s. he means woembassy workers have le the country. president obama says he hopes to avoid military action there and in iran. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: president obama is stepping up u.s. pressure because the syrian government stepped up its attacks on civilians. hundreds were killed saturday. even a makeshift medical clinic was shelled. more than 5,000 syrians have

died in a year of unrest. today the u.s. flag is down in damascus. the embassy is closed, a major move. >> we're pursuing a variety of means to put pressure on the assad regime. >> reporter: syrian dictator barbar assad. >> it is time for assad to go. >> reporter: president obama told matt lauer he does not want to use force like he did to overthrow libyan dictator moammar gadhafi. >> i think it is very important for us to try to resolve this without recourse to outside military intervention and i think that's possible. >> reporter: but u.s. efforts to tighten u.n. sanctions against assad were blocked. infuriating the u.s. ambassador. >> the fact that russia and china chose to align themselves with a dictator was indeed disgusting. >> reporter: on iran president obama said he does not believe israel is about to strike suspected nuclear sites and does believe iranian leaders can be forced to back down through sanctions. >> my number one priority

continues to be the security of the united states but also the security of israel. >> reporter: the new "the washington post"/abc news poll finds 56% of americans trust president obama now on international affairs. that adds to his overall approval. now up to 50% in that poll in this election year. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. back close to home police returned to mcpherson square today after this weekend brought big changes for occupy d.c. protesters. early saturday morning officers moved in to enforce a no camping policy. today they hauled away thaenent that were deemed health hazards and those that had bedding. even with the tents moved out it is clear there is a lot of work before the grounds on mcpherson square get back to normal. >> we needed our ice scrapers out there this morning. will we need them for the rest of the week? >> or anything more perhaps like a shovel? we haven't used one of those this season, veronica. >> no, we haven't even thrown that word around much either

this winter. but as far as today goes it was another one of those easy, easy winter days for us. of course it started out pretty cold. temperatures were awfully low. a range between 19 and 29 degrees this morning and look at that. we're up to 51 with sunshine across the area. not a bad afternoon at all. let's go into some of the neighborhoods right now. fairfax county 51 degrees. annandale. chantilly and herndon also 51. 54 coming in at 54 degrees up north. you folks in montgomery county, aspen hill and laytonsville, 54 in camp springs and riverdale now at 50 degrees. we're under a clear sky. open it up, take a look down to the south and we've got some clouds advancing north and northeastward but i think a lot of those clouds are going to be moving across southern maryland, areas of the northern neck on east. we should have a clear sky around for the evening hours. there is a look at 7:00 and 9:00. 11:00. a clear sky for us. nice and starry. by 9:00 we'll be down to 44 degrees. then 11:00 p.m. 42.

on the planet. >> i absolutely do. i thought she was a great choice for this. she is a big tune in. there was a spike in the numbers when she came on the stage at halftime even from the game. people definitely wanted to see her. she totally delivered. yes, elton john is probably rolling right now so furious because she lip synced but at the end i don't think she did. the last songs it is my own opinion she was singing "like a prayer" and i thought her performance was clean. she looked sexy and fit and strong. it was a huge night for madonna. >> that was a big finish. i liked that "like a prayer" at the end. we want to move on to happy guy you are. the giants came through for you. >> no more little brother syndro syndrome. let it go. sports guys don't think about it. the only little brother syndrome, the patriots, the

>> this country can't be rocked out with one punch. we get right back up and when we do again the world will hear the roar of our engines. yeah. it's halftime, america. and our second half is about to begin. >> so other commercials tried to push products through sexuality or create buzz using laughs and humor i think that the chrysler and detroit took a completely different approach with a solid message. it was really american. it makes us -- it was very powerful. i thought it was a brilliant ad. really strong. >> gives you chills. >> and to use clint eastwood. >> the perfect guy for the message. >> oh, boy. >> all right. not everyone had a hit last night. we know that. i like the skechers dog. you thought that was just okay. but you thought the online floral company, teleflora, had a miss with the one featuring super model adriana. let's take a look at that.

we're loving this sunshine today. >> and tomorrow is not going to be bad either. >> okay. >> but then, this week we have one little sneaky storm system that could give us some weather to deal with. i think the roads will be fine but a conversational type event for this week. let's head outdoors to see what's going on. there is your sunshine we're talking about and some very mild air for this time the year. 51 degrees right now. the average high 45. we've got a south wind at ten miles per hour currently. but again, clear sky all through the area. let's take a look at some of the numbers in other locations just to the north. 52 in frederick. mount airy. 52 olney and gaithersburg.

52 degrees currently from leesburg to manassas down toward stafford and fredericksburg, virginia. not bad at all. check out the satellite and radar. you can see some clouds i talked about earlier skirting over southern maryland. areas of the northern neck. those are the locations that i think tomorrow morning we could be looking at a little bit of fog. some patchy fog around the area as far as our area goes, most of the area under a clear sky and not as cold for tomorrow morning at all. 42 degrees by 11:00 p.m. then into the 30s mid and upper 30s for tomorrow morning. that'll put us several degrees above where we started the day today. on storm 4 radar right now we'll open it up. you can see there are spotty showers down south. florida getting plenty of showers and even a few embedded thunderstorms but other than that not much going on. it's through the week though tomorrow especially we'll see a storm system develop. sunshine tomorrow.

your tuesday at 2:00 p.m. then watch this little area of low pressure and cold front approaching the area for wednesday. right now it looks as though we could see snow showers. that's right, snow showers, start before noon time on wednesday. then i think we'll see it switch over maybe to a little bit of ice and rain but for sure another one of those little events coming into the area like what we had around on saturday. for your evening we're mostly clear, mild to cool. sun sets at 5:35. we're 40 to 46 degrees with a light wind. then a clear sky for tomorrow morning. not as cold. again, areas of fog south with a temperature range between 27 and 36 degrees. tomorrow's forecast, guys, you're really going to love this. sunshine. and a lot like march for the afternoon hours. very, very nice. here is a look at your four-day forecast. 55 degrees. tomorrow look at the rest of the work week. wednesday, thursday, friday. we start cooling it down especially on wednesday. there's your snow. i think we could probably have more hours of light snow. we're not talking about getting

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here's what's making news right now at 4:30. a look at the headlines. police say a father intentionally blew up his own home yesterday, killing himself and his two young boys. josh powell was a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife susan back in '09. the children were at home for a supervised visit. powell's attorney says he received a suicide note shortly before the blast. >> the u.s. embassy in syria is locked and vacant today. the american ambassador and other embassy employees and their families have left damascus closing the embassy is the latest in several steps the

u.s. is taking to pressure syrian president bashar assad to step down. his crackdown against dissidents has killed people in the haft 11 months. jury selection started today in the murder trial of a former la crosse player. george huguely is charged with killing his girlfriend yardly love in 2010. julie carey is in the courtroom with a live report here tonight at 5:00. stocks ended this monday in modestly lower territory. at the closing bell the dow-jones industrials were off 17 points. the nasdaq fell about four. the s&p 500 was down less than a single point. you've probably seen a promo or two or three dozen perhaps of this new smash series called "smash" debuting tonight, folks. it's a musical drama about the making of a broadway show. >> and it spot lights a side of new york that you typically don't see on tv.

>> every little part. the dancers i've known on broadway. >> reporter: music from tony award winners adds to the broadway pedigree and it is a mix that has numerous critics supporting the show. >> many of us are hoping a show this different will work. that has this much entertainment value. nbc has really swung the bat. >> reporter: viewers will decide if that swing produces a hit. >> "smash" debuts tonight at 10:00 here on nbc 4. three cruise ships are back at sea tonight after a viral outbreak docked the ships. the three ships docked in florida and louisiana were contaminated with the norovirus associated with upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. a panel of italian judges today are now deciding whether the captain of the wrecked

cruise ship will remain under house arrest. 17 people were killed last month when the costa concordia struck rocks near an island off of italy and rolled on to its side. 16 are still missing. the captain could face charges of manslaughter, ship wreck, and abandoning his vessel. prosecutors want him sent to jail to await trial. his defense wants him freed. the three-judge panel has three days to make its decision. people in australia are talking about some surveillance video that shows a baby carriage rolling on to some train tracks. it happened in melbourne. now watch here. the carriage is at the bottom of your screen. the mother in the green cardigan looked away for just a second and when she looked back her baby was rolling over the edge of the platform. she immediately jumps on to the tracks while another woman rushes in to help. the baby wasn't injured and was in fact rescued before the next train arrived. now watch the video again and check out the guy in the jeans and the blazer.

time for our app of the day. this makes you a little smarter wendy rieger is smarter. she's been working on this today. >> i'm just smart in general because i know how to pick good apps. this is called earth now by nasa. it shows you where the earth is right now. you can roll it around like that so you can look for places and see, you know, i love the green band through africa. anyway, here's the important thing. the earth of course is in a bit of a crisis so this looks at vital signs and you can look at let's say, you know, the carbon monoxide. and you can see and it says where it is at 160%. you see this big band here. and then you think well what

does that mean? the details, it will tell you here what it means and why you need to worry about it so that when you go back to looking at it you can see exactly where it is and you can see how red it is. you don't want it red like that. it will look at air temperature. carbon monoxide, the gravity feel which is kind of fun. you know, what in the world does that mean? let's find out. this is really a great way. it does make you smarter and it also kind of brings you back in touch with your earth because we're looking at it from down here. it's hard to keep it in context in our daily life. this gives you a bird's eye view of actually beyond that. it gives you a space eye view of our planet and it's all we've got. we need to do everything we can to keep it healthy and inhabitable. so that we can live here for millions of years. it's called earth now and take a look at your mother, your mother earth. okay? back to you. >> all right. >> thank you, wendy.

wendy was talking about planets. we feel like we're on a different planet from two years ago. >> wacky. a lot of snow to no snow at all. >> we remember though. >> we're talking about two years ago, snowmageddon. remember? everything was covered with white. we were shoveling. we were snow blowing. we were trying to get out. the system is starting to produce snow on february 5th and didn't stop until february 6th. it was 28 hours of falling snow where on the first day we got 8.7 in d.c. on the second day we got 9.1. 17.8 inches of snow and almost 30 inches at dulles. there you go. >> wow. >> a little bit of snow i know. it looks so different. >> seems so long ago. >> we haven't had much covered with snow around here. not much at all. temperatures now at 51 degrees. we're covered in sunshine right now. the south wind at 10 miles per hour. your sun sets today at 5:35. we'll be a little chilly late this evening and then early

tomorrow morning just sunshine around the area. sunshine comes to us early and stays with us all day long. it's wednesday that we've got to worry about. on wednesday starting at about 11:00 a.m. let me take you through the future weather cast here and stop it for you. there is 7:00 a.m. we're dry. okay for the wednesday morning rush. by the time we get to the evening, the afternoon rush we're talking about snow. maybe even some ice mixed in. a little bit of rain. more down to the south around quantico, waldorf, annapolis. snow could give us a quick coating to maybe an inch of snow throughout the area by the time this ends. 11:00 a.m. until about 6:00 p.m. or so on wednesday. it'll be fast moving, intermittent light snow for us. we'll be watching that system closely coming our way for wednesday. temperatures by tomorrow morning 27 to 36 degrees. not nearly as low as they were this morning. we'll hit a high tomorrow of about 56 degrees. so a little higher, too. both on the low end and the high end for tomorrow. probably our best day out of the work week is going to be tomorrow with a higher
