>> and i'm jim handly. we're a buiit out of practice. road crews were out today, getting set in place. you can sigh one of the trucks out this afternoon treating the roadways in montgomery county. what time will the snow start arriving? i can't even say it. >> you're out of practice, but you're not, veronica. >> no, i'm not. we've had some of those instances of snow here so far this winter. this is not going to be a big system at all. the national weather service has not posted any winter weather advisories yet, that's likely to change. take a look here on the satellite and radar. there's a little bit of rain and snow to the north of that. that's the system that will be continuing to organize and make its way eastward. for today, we have temperatures in the 50s in the mid-50s, some spots down to the south around culpepper, up to 60 degrees today. overnight, we're going to drop

down around freezing in a couple neighborhoods, and back tomorrow to around 40 degrees. once the precip comes in, our temperatures will be falling throughout the day tomorrow. i like the fact that we're in the 50s today, that's going to help on road surfaces. 55 up to the north in frederick maryland. 55 in d.c., 57 in laplata. right around 60, still culpepper, fredericksburg and charlottesville right now. here's the deal, we're dry for tonight and we'll be dry for tomorrow morning. 41 degrees by 11:00 p.m., temperatures in a lot of neighborhoods, you're going to drop down below freezing. we get the clouds, more clouds for the evening hours, we're dry for the morning rush. it's the afternoon rush. the evening hours and early part of tomorrow night where we're really going to see the snow come down around parts of this area. we're going to talk about snowfall amounts and how much your neighborhood could get, and we'll have more on exactly when the snow is going to start and when it's going to end coming up in a couple minutes. >> thanks veronica. now, to the republican

presidential race. three states are holding primaries or caucuses today, colorado, minnesota and missouri. and in those states, a new issue is spilling over into the battle for votes, involves contraception and the health care law that republicans call obama care. steve handlesman has the story. >> reporter: rick santorum figures this could be the start of a comeback. >> if you're looking at the polls, today could be a very good day for the conservative caucus. >> for two weeks, the former senator has focused on colorado and minnesota and missouri, where today's primary voting is already underway. santorum's catholic social conservatism helped him win iowa. now he has a new issue. the department of hhs requiring religiously affiliated employers like catholic colleges and hospitals next year to pay for

in from colorado and minnesota, the primary in missouri is nonbinding. steve handlesman, news 4. it appears she was not joking. roseanne barr is launching a presidential bid of her own. barr's name will be one of the three green party candidates listed on the ballot for the presidential primary on june 5th. the two major parties are not serving the american people, and as a green party candidate. she looks forward to working with people who share her values. the green party will select a presidential nominee at the convention in baltimore this july. russia's foreign minister met with the syrian president today in damascus, to urge reforms to end the violence. more than 15 dissidents were killed today alone in syria. ayman mohyeldin has the latest

from cairo. >> reporter: thousands of syrians welcomed the foreign minister in their capital. he was meeting with bashar al assad. the idea was dismissed by the opposition, who says the president is not genuine about reform, and they would not enter into agreements before assad steps down and hands power over to a deputy. eyewitness reports suggest that the syrian military has stepped up its brutal crackdown on descent across the country following a veto at the united nations. say that it has been interpreted as a license to kill. >> for russia and china to have veto vetoed this resolution at a time

when unarmed protesters in residential neighborhoods are being attacked, is simply incendiary. >> diplomatically, the international community continues to ratchet up the pressure on the government of assad. with many european countries withdrawing their ambassadors and in some cases expelling ambassadors from their country. the trial could start this evening. jury selection in the george hughley murder trial is now in the second day in charlottesville. the process could wrap up in the next hour. that means opening statements could begin later tonight or tomorrow morning. the chevy chase resident is charged in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend. at last check, 26 jurors had been chosen. the target number is 28. from that, 12 jurors plus three alternates will be seated. yeardley love who played on the women's lacrosse team was found dead in her apartment back in may of 2010.

hughley faces life in prison if convicted. the entire staff of the los angeles area elementary school has been remused after two teamers were arrested on allegations of child sex abuse. more than 120 staff members including the principal's teachers, even the cafeteria workers will be replaced while officials investigate the allegations. both teachers last week, they have each been teaching for more than 20 years. >> the action that we're taking is to find a support staff and simultaneously determine if there are individuals who have done something wrong. >> my son has the perfect tea teacher to me, and i don't agree on them changing all teachers because of two americans. >> new staff willing be in place on thursday. the current staff is not being fired, they will be moved to new schools that are currently under construction. there are new developments today in the split between two

major health organizations involving women. a top executive with the susan g. komen breast cancer charity resigns. karen said her decision to step down as vice president for public policy was fuelled by funding disagreements for planned parenthood. she favored cutting off financial support, komen announced last week it would stop issuing grants to planned parenthood because of its government investigation. the charity later reverses that decision. it's a day of cheers and confetti as new york city welcomes home the super bowl winning new york jets. thousands of fans lined the street streets -- 30 tons of ticker-tape rained down as floats carrying team members made a mile long trip from the southern tip of the borough to city hall. the team was given symbolic keys to the city. the mayor joked that new york should be given a new nickname, big blue apple after the parade.

spin in that ad, on this i am certain. i am certainly not politically affiliated with mr. obama. it was meant to be a message about just job growth and the spirit of america. i think all politicians will agree with it. today a federal appeals court struck down california's ban on gay marriage. a three-judge panel ruled two to one that proposition eight violated the u.s. constitution. prop 8 passed in 2008, limiting marriage to one man and one woman. just five months after same sex unions became legal in california. sponsors of proposition eight have vowed to appeal to the u.s. supreme court to oversteturn today's decision. stocks traded near highs at the end of trading today. the nasdaq was up about 2 points, the dow up about 36 points. stocks fell earlier in the day after talks over spending cuts in greece.

miles per hour, the air a little dry right now, the dewpoint temperature at 29 degrees, when the precipitation comes into the area like a lot of the last storms, it's going to take a while to saturate, for the snow to get going. we're in the 50s throughout, even close to 60 degrees, culpepper and around fredericksburg and down to the south. overnight, we dropped down to 49 degrees. there's your sunset, 5:36. we're dry for tomorrow morning 30 to 35. we have clouds building down to the south, our storm system around st. louis, around areas of memphis, tennessee, you can see the rain and cold air. there's snow there. that's what's going to continue to organize toward us. there's our area of low pressure, dragging a cold front with it. here we are at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, by the time we get to noontime, there's snow on top of us. areas of moderate snow to the

north and west. and there's even a chance that some areas way down to the south and east that snow could hang on just a little longer. by thursday afternoon, back to sunshine across the area. here's a look at some of the snow totals we're expecting throughout the area. mostly rain down to the south, until we get to the very end of the storm. for charles county, st. mary's county. and then a thin area here from baltimore, even areas of northern d.c. on into manassas, falls church, between 1 and 2 inches of snowfall with the storm system really getting going. i think after noontime, it's probably not ending until we get to 11:00 p.m. or midnight tomorrow. as much as two inches could be falling into the west. areas around winchester, even areas of sterling, louden county. around two inches of snowfall, by the time this system ends midnight tomorrow. we're mostly clear for the evening, nice evening, enjoy, 48

in charlottesville, the task of selecting a jury continued today in the trial of the former uva lacrosse player accused of murder. if it wraps up today, opening statements could begin later tonight or early tomorrow. george hughley of chevy chase is charged in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend yeardley love. a high ranking susan g. komen official who pushed to stop funding of planned parenthood resigned. she said she was deeply disappointed in the charity's funding strategy. last week it announced it would stop issuing grants to planned parenthood but later reversed its decision. stocks closed higher today after a positive job's report and optimism over greece's debt. the dow was up 33 points after hitting an 11-year high. the nasdaq closed two points higher for the day, and the s&p 500 was um about 3. now, to disturbing new details in the case of two young

boys killed by their father in a fiery murder/suicide. he seriously injured his children before starting that fire. >> the incident is now part of a larger investigation into what caused the disappearance of susan powell two years ago. stephanie stanton has the latest. >> reporter: when police removed the bodies of josh and his two young sons from the burned out home, investigators found a hatchet at the scene. preliminary autopsy results revealed powell and the boy s died from smoke inhalation. but the boys also suffered hatchet wounds to their head and neck. >> this was not a tragedy, it was a horrible murder of two little kids. >> reporter: powell used ten gallons of gasoline to soak the home. he also got rid of the boys

toys. >> he had taken boxes of toys and books and donated them to the good will sometime over the weekend. this is a planned out event. >> reporter: neighbors left sfwlaurs and stuffed dois at the scene of the deadly fire. the boys grandparent who is had been locked in a bitter custody battle with josh powell said they feared josh may harm the children. >> i was concerned about how this first visitation would go, especially after he had lost custody for six months. >> reporter: it's been a two-year ordeal in the search for their daughter. police labeled josh a person of interest in susan's disappearance. but he was never charged. utah investigators have joined washington authorities and say they were getting closer to solving the case. >> we had to turn over every rock to be able to get as far as we got. i'm optimistic, i promised the coxs i wasn't giving up. >> the cox family believes their daughter isn't coming home. and now her boys are gone too.

but one thing gives them small comfort. >> we know that the children are with their mother. and they're safe. >> stephanie stanton, nbc news, graham, washington. >> josh powell was legally denied custody of the children just last week. investigators say he also sent good-bye and i'm sorry e-mails to close friends prior to the deadly fire. the captain of the cruise ship that ran aground near italy will remain under house arrest. 17 people were killed last month, when the ship struck rocks and rolled on to its side. the captain could face charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning his vessel. in keeping him under house arrest, prosecutors denied the request to jail the captain. a crackdown on airline pilots who use drugs has led to a third arrest in indonesia. drug enforcement officials arrested a pilot during a card

game at a hotel in independent nearby ya over the weekend. later he tested positive for methamphetamine. he was just hours away from his next scheduled flight. he also is the second pilot this year to test positive for meth. a third air pilot tested positive last year. the crackdown comes as indonesia struggles to upgrade its civil air safety. a series of deadly accidents led to ban all indonesian airlines from its airspace in 2007. it's expected to be one of the biggest movies at the box office this summer. and today we're getting another sneak peak at the amazing spiderman. >> amazing in a word. a new trailer debuted online today. there's already a whole lot of buzz surrounding it.

rise into the upper 30s to low 40s. 41 degrees, d.c., manassas, culpepper, that will be early in the day. probably before noontime, and then it's falling temperatures where the snow moves in. here's a look at our time line. 6:00 a.m. wednesday, there's the white, any where you see the shiedings of blue, there's moderate snow p.m. could be moderate snow showing up around winchester. moderate snow coming into parts of northern louden county, sterling and northern montgomery county. areas of culpepper could start to see moderate snow by the time we get to the evening rush tomorrow. early thursday morning, that snow just after midnight. there issues on area roads for two evening rush hours, we're talking about late tomorrow and early thursday. one to two inches, gaithersburg, down toward manassas, west of i-95. here's a look at what to expect, snow develops between 11:00 a.m.
