montgomery county. >> here's a live look now right outside. may be hard to believe we may be looking at a very different picked this time tomorrow. doug kammerer joins us with what we can expect. >> it will be a different day tomorrow. this time tomorrow, temperature out there right now, 53 degrees. this time tomorrow we could be about 15 degrees cooler than that, with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s across the area, and with snowfalling, a beautiful day out there right now. plenty of sunshine, winds out of the north at 8 miles an hour, it is gorgeous across the area once again. 55 in manassas, near 60 in fredericksburg, once again, you look at those numbers and say, what do you mean snow? well, we note only have some snow coming in, we also have colder air that's making its way in from the north. no snow or rain right now across on storm 4 radar. notice what's happening off to the west. there's the storm system, most of it is rain right now around st. louis, there is cold air

moving down from the south. we will see that move in overnight tonight. and that will set the stage for some snow in parts of our area. dry for tomorrow morning's rush hour. a little on the chilly side, tomorrow morning not too bad. the snow and range will move in late in the afternoon, depends on where you live that decides what you get. i'll show you exactly what we're thinking coming up in my full forecast. >> dourks we'll see you in a bit. angry reaction tonight from members of the d.c. council amid new details of that unemployment fraud investigation. the probe reveals a level of corruption that is both wide ranging and costly. double dipping employees collecting unemployment and a city paycheck at the same time. pat collins is live at the office of the attorney general with today's developments. pat? >> jim, laying down the law, we've been talking how some city workers have been double dipping, picking up a city paycheck while at the same time

collecting unemployment money. we begin our story now with some strong words from the city's attorney general. >> i think it's pretty disturbing that people, particularly in certain positions like people in the education -- public schools or the office of state superintendent of education would not have good enough sense not to be double dipping in this way and taking -- this could be in some cases fraud. and it's quite inappropriate. >> outrage at the wilson building as news of this unemployment scam spreads. >> something is troubling and we'll get to the bottom of it, it's outrageous and unacceptable. >> an investigation by the department of employment services revealed that 130 city workers received unemployment checks at the same time they were on the city payroll. the scam has been going on for

at least three years. more than $840,000 lost in this scheme. >> i don't know that it's collusion, but i do know that if somebody tells one person, you know, you can still keep collecting those checks, you don't have to actual when i be in a full blown conspiracy or includco lewding. but a word might spread there's a way to scam the government. >> a loophole? >> right. whatever it is, we're closing it. >> reporter: the department of employment services has turned over worker's names, the numbers and all the evidence to the attorney general. he then will decide what cases to refer to the u.s. attorney. >> i think the message is, we're not going to tolerate this, and we are going to get the money back, call people out and in appropriate cases, send it for criminal prosecution. >> now, we've been trying to

collect the names of the double dippers. so far we know that one of the employees worked for council chairman kwame brown. that worker along with the other double dippers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. reporting live from northwest washington, i'm pat collins, news 4. >> all right, pat, thank you. a high ranking official with susan g. komen for the cure is calling quits. karen handle turned in her resignation today just days after a highly publicized dispute over whether the group should help fund planned parenthood. she was komen's vp for public policy. she supported cutting off the funds and was disappointed komen reversed their decision to do so. two officers have been suspend after a police involved shooting in brentwood last night. authorities say surveillance

video tells a different story. darcie spencer has seen that tape. she joins us live with the latest on this story. darcie? >> reporter: i have been able to see the videotape, it shows the suspect walking down the sidewalk. two officers approach from behind. one of the officers reaches around his waste area and strikes the suspect on the head. you see a flash, and the defendant's attorney tells me the flash was the officer's gun going off. and the suspect drops to the ground. fortunately, no one was hurt in that. this video was taken outside a construction company in brentwood. this all started friday night. two officers were patrolling the area. they saw a couple guys going into the gas station with masks on. they thought maybe this was a robbery in progression, so they went to investigate. one of the officers involved is corporal taylor. they confronted the suspects, they're at the store, and they

say this particular suspect took a swing at one of the officers and then ran away. they caught up to him in front of that construction company right where that camera was, and that's where we're getting two different stories. the officer says that ryan reached for his gun, but the video tells a different story. >> he was not resisting any type of arrest. he complied. he was hit with a gun in the back of the head. the gun went off, and he was beat in his back. >> immediately determined by the police department this needed to go to the state's attorneys office, and it did. and the right things were done. >> reporter: the charges relating to assault on corporal taylor have been dropped. all of the charges should be dropped considering what

happened. there's no way that officers would want to go into court and testify about what happened knowing there's a discrepancy with this videotape. the state's attorneys office is continuing to investigate at this time. reporting live from oxon hill, darcie spencer, news 4. >> thank you, darcie. a teenager is one of the victims in two deadly shootings in prince georges county overnight that happened just blocks from each other. 16-year-old christopher smith was found lying on the ground along 85th avenue. he had been shot. the ambulance came across another body near garrison road and 78th avenue. that victim was shot while riding a bike. police identified him as 23-year-old alfonso thompson, jr. they are not sure if these crimes are linked. jury selection could wrap up tonight in the trial of the former uva lacrosse player charged with murder. that means opening statements could begin tomorrow morning. julie carrie is outside the courthouse in charlottesville,

where finding an impartial jury has been difficult to say the least, julie? >> reporter: jury selection is filling a second day here, taking far longer than anyone expected or hoped. just a handful of jurors has been added in seven hours of questioning that's gone on today, and at least three more are are needed before the final cuts can be made reignand a jur be seated. yeardley love's mother, sister and other close relatives were joined in court today by many of the 22-year-old victim's friends. they felted the first three rows on one side of the courtroom. on the other side sat george hughley. he faces several charges here. the case involving two players on uva's top ranked lacrosse team got national attention, and that's what's making so hard to pick an impartial jury right now. the defense have agreed when they questioned jurors and learned they have an opinion

about george hughley's guilt, that juror is dismissed. here's the observation from one local defense attorney who's been watching this case. >> it seems that people are saying i was influenced by the media, and any time they say that, the commonwealth is acquiescing for understandable reasons in the motion to strike that juror for cause. and it's really hard. the jurors are saying, i have a hard time setting aside my preconceptions, which is also unusual. >> reporter: the judge carried jury selection into the evening last night until 8:30, it looks like that could be happening again tonight. for now, reporting live from charlottesville, julie carrie, news 4. >> thank you, julie. lawmakers in montgomery county are preparing to go to battle with the state over teacher pensions. they plan to fight a proposal that would shift some of the pensions from the state to the counties. the montgomery examiner reports shifting half of that burden of teacher pensions would cost

nine out of ten people are taking in twice as much salt as they should be. that's according to new stats released by the centers for disease control. chris clackum has more on where that salt is coming from. >> reporter: the cdc says most of the sodium we eat comes not

from the shaker, but from processed and restaurant foods. it's latest report on sodium narrows the list of salty culprits to ten times of food like luncheon meat, pizza, snacks, fresh and processed poultry, cheeseburgers, cheese, pasta and/or meat dishes. and bread. >> not as high as some other foods, but because they make up such a large portion of our total intake, they contribute to the majority of our sodium intake. >> reporter: the the report notes the average person consumes about 3300 milligrams of sodium per day. more than twice the recommended amount. with much of it coming when we eat out. >> it's just a given that if you go out to eat your meal contains 1,000 milligrams of sodium or more in most cases. >> reporter: the suggestions to reduce the sodium, eat out less.

of what was a beautiful day out there today. take a look, plenty of sunshine all across the area. simply gorgeous today. high temperatures into the mid-50s. saw 55 degrees at the airport, right now we're sitting at 53 degrees with plenty of sunshine. winds out of the north right now at 8 miles per hour. look at the temperatures across the region. 57 in culpepper, 57 in fredericksburg. 50 down toward pax river. i was talking to some kids today about the chances for snow. they're so excited, where do we go today? this is where we went. we went to mary harris mother jones elementary school. say hello to the second graders. we have some of the older kids there in the back too. will we get out of school? no, kids you will not get out of school from this event. the snow will start too late in the day tomorrow to see any kind of cancellations. storm 4 radar all clear around our area. look back to the west, this is our storm system, it's so warm

today out ahead of this storm. notice these clouds right here, that's the cold air. so the cold air is going to move in, just in time for our next storm system to move in too, that will create the possibility of snow in parts of the area, we'll break it down for you in a second. 38 in pittsburgh, 39 in state college. you can see where the colder air is, 48 in richmond, 39 in state college. that's a big difference and those temperatures will fall as we make our way through tonight and tomorrow morning. we start around 6:00 tomorrow morning, no problems. so kids out there toward adele phi, you're going to school tomorrow. look at this, no snow even close to the area, until you get way back here toward west virginia, watch what happens by around noon, north and west of washington, once again we're talking about snow moving in through louden county, frederick county virginia and maryland. could be light to moderate at times during the day tomorrow, and even by 5:00, that's where you see the line. once again a typical scenario right along the i-95 corridor,

north and west, best chance for snow. south and east, this should stay all rain for you, i do think maybe on the backside, you may see a little bit of a changeover to snow. no accumulation south and east. where are we going to see accumulation? i think it will be to the north and west. south aneast this will be a mostly rain event including the district. just south and east of there, mostly rain there, one to two inches, though, western fairfax county, western prince william and falkeer. here's the two inch line. this is right around the blue ridgemo ridge, montgomery and howard county. mostly clear this evening, a nice evening, get out and enjoy it, 48 to 53 degrees, tomorrow afternoon, rather tomorrow morning, starting off dry, increasing clouds, cool, but not too cold, 28 to 35 degrees with the cold air moving in. rain with snow developing. all snow to the north and west.

today is national black hiv and aids awareness day. in our area, free screenings for about 150 high school students. it was men to the mark the

one-year anniversary of the infectious disease care center. doctors also hosted a sex and hiv discussion. the clinic also provided free hiv and aids screenings throughout the city. older americans may want to get themselves tested for std's. about 80% of adults between the ages of 50 and 90 are having sex. experts say they're not surprised, because older people are in better shape these days and more active than they have been in the past. flying coach does not appear to increase your chances of developing dangerous blood clots in your legs. there's new research that says the problem often referred to as economy class syndrome is not directly attributed to economy class. the real culprit, not getting up and moving around during those loaning flights. some things you can do put you

two police officers in prince georges county, have been suspended from the force after fabricating a story about a police involved shooting last week. police say surveillance video does not support the account of what happened. >> in charlottesville, the task of selecting a jury continues for a second day in the trial of former uva lacrosse player accused of murder. if it wraps up tonight opening statements could start tomorrow morning. george hughley of chevy chase is charged in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend yeardley love in 2010. a resignation in the front

thanks to an unlikely chain of events. they were all being poisoned by odorless carbon monoxide gas until a discovery at a nearby hospital set into motion an all out rescue effort. tracy wilkins has the story from ft. washington. >> this family was found unconscious inside of their ft. washington home and the discovery was made thanks to their sick son who helped them out from his hospital bed a mom and three kids were transported by medivac after they were found suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. >> scary moment, i haven't slept the whole night. >> it all started yesterday evening when the 6-year-old son was playing with his dad. >> he fell off the bed. so i guess whatever he was breathing -- they didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: the doctors at children's national medical center discovered high levels of carbon monoxide in the child's

blood. the father immediately called home, but there was no answer. >> my uncle called right away, he called another one of my uncles and told him to get everyone out because there's gas all over the house. >> some of the friends came and knocked on our door around 12:00 last night. they could tell that something -- the lady was lying on the floor. >> reporter: a neighbor says they could see the mother trying to move once they started banging on the door. soon fire and ems were on the scene, and the family was medevaced to a hospital with a hyperbarrick chamber. the father was transported from children's hospital for treatment. >> they're all good. i just talked to their doctor and they're all safe. that's the most important thing. >> reporter: the carbon monoxide levels inside of the home were at 450 parts per million, anything over 5 parts per million is considered unsafe.

it's believed the co leaked from a malfunctioning gas furnace in the basement. a heads up if you're driving in fairfax county tomorrow. construction work on the metro to dulles could mean big delays in your midday commute. earlier today trucks brought in massive equipment. crews are building a power substation. the trucks created traffic delays all over the area. the trucks will leave in the morning from winchester, traveling along route 7 and arriving in our area about 1:00 or 2:00. in cases where the road isn't big enough for multiple vehicles, there will be rolling blockades. the final destination runs along the dulles toll road. trucks can access it from buelah road. this is, of course, all for the silver line, which will eventually run from east falls

church to dulles. phase one of the project, which includes four stops in tyson's corner is expected to open late next year. the maryland senate is considering a new measure that would expand casino gambling in the state. it would allow table games like black jack, roulette, poker at maryland casinos. the bill would also make it possible to build a sixth casino in the state that could be located at national harbor or in ft. washington. that would require approval of voters statewide as well as voters in prince georges county. for an 11-year-old winning the science fair, that's a big deal. >> getting to show off your invention to the president at the white house, doesn't get much cooler than that. >> erica gonzalez met very smart kids who did just that. >> top science fair winners of all ages from across the country were invited to the white house

weekend. next weekend february 18th through the 20th a handful of energy star products will be sold tax free in maryland stores. the list includes everything from refrigeratorefrigerators, dehumidifiers, clothes washers and heat pumps to compact fluorescent light bulbs. you can save the 6% maryland sales tax if you buy any of these energy star items and more. paying for a college education is expensive. today, however, the princeton review released its ranking list for the best value colleges for 2012. here are the top five best value public colleges. topping the list, university of north carolina at chapel hill, the university of virginia, which has topped the list in years past is number two this year. followed by new college of florida in sarasota. number four, state university of new york in binghamton and rounding out the top five, university of wisconsin. when it comes to ranching the

the superintendent of montgomery county schools says he had no choice but to allow controversial letters to go home with students last week. >> news 4's chris gordon reports on why the school system says despite the potentially inflammatory content their hands were tied. this is interesting. >> good evening. students and parents want to know why these letters were sent home, offering to help gaze who want to overcome their feelings. the montgomery county public schools are bound by law to distribute these pamphlets as a result of a lawsuit decided years ago. it was at this student town meeting that superintendent joshua starr got a question that came in through twitter, asking why the pamphlet was sent home

with students from five schools including einstein high school in kensington. the pamphlet says, ex-gays demonstrate that those with same sex attractions can seek help and information, overcoming their feelings. dr. starr was asked if he was aware of and if he approved of the flyers' distribution. >> i find the actions of pfox to be reprehensible and deplorable. we are bound by law. >> dr. star says as a result of a lawsuit, montgomery county public schools are required to distribute the pfox letter if it sends home messages from other nonprofit organizations like the pta and boy scouts. starr says he's looking into options. a student followed up on that with a question. >> my question was, what exactly will the superintendent do to combat the pfox letters that were sent home last week.

>> every child needs to be welcomed and feel healthy and safe in our schools. we want to promote that. we don't believe pfox is doing that, and my hands are tied right now. >> this flyer is for the benefit of the students which may be confused about their sexual feelings or for those who experience same sex attractions as something unwanted. for those students we want them to know they do not have to be locked into a gay identity for life. >> montgomery county public schools will continue to abide by the law and distribute pamphlets from nonprofit organizations with a disclaimer on the bottom that the materials are neither sponsors nor endorsed by the board of education, the superintendent or the school. wendy and jim, back to you. >> krigs gordon, thank you. let's get a final check on our weather. we have big stuff blowing in it sounds like tomorrow, doug. >> big stuff for this winter.

playoff mentality going-forward every game. >> i don't think so. i think it's a big divisional game. i think the last few games, they've kind of owned us, and we haven't played well against them. we need to make sure we come out with a real good effort today. >> i think the ones i've been in have been tight. not jumping from ninth or tenth to third. it makes it that much more important, i think. as big as this game is, we need to put a string of a lot of games together to make it, so it's not 3 to 9, it's 3 to 6, 3 to 7 that kind of thing. it starts with a big win tonight. >> you guys haven't won back to back since mid january. what's the issue that's causing you guys not to get going? >> i think we're a little bit inconsistent. we come out, have a great effort, win a game. and then we just don't play the same way the next night.

we start to turn the puck over a little bit too much and start getting away from what got used two points the night before. >> you guys haven't scored on the power play since the all-star break. how important is the power play for this team specifically? >> we haven't been playing that well sinced all-star break. i think that goes hand in hand. whenever you have a good power play, they win you hockey games. when your power play is not going, it loses you hockey games. we have to -- that's the most important thing, if we want to make the playoffs, a run or be anywhere close to the top of the conference, we have to get a power play going. >> you guys have really good players, backstrom with a concussion, hopefully brooks can come back don't. what does brooks mean for you guys, specifically for versatility. >> he plays a big role, plays against the other team's top line. he plays a lot, power play. that would hurt us a lot to not have him tonight. i think he'll be going, i think

online. a doctor believes social media could be the problem. >> i believe there's a potential to create further spread beyond the area that was unusually involved. >> reporter: as the teens continue to get treatment,ed school district insists there's no health risk to other students. on saturday, administrators showed parents a new report by the new york state health department which found no infectious or environmental cause of the illness. now the school has hired an outside company to review all the previous testing. also pending, results of yet another investigation. this one by a team of environmental activists headed up by erin brockovich, the woman made famous by julia roberts' oscar winning performance. investigators are studying soil samples to see if the illness could be related to a train derailment and chemical spill near the school more than 40 years ago, the epa insists that
