and they highlighted an e-mail threat from huguely to back that up. with leg shackles limiting his walk, accused killer george huguely arrived at court, a blank expression on his face, both outside and inside the courtroom. but there were tears on the witness stand when victim yeardley love's sister, lexie you and mother, sharon, both testified about the terrible morning of may 3, 2010, when they learned yeardley was dead. her on again, off again boyfriend george huguely was arrested that day accused of breaking into love's bedroom in a drunken rage and shaking her violently, hitting her head against the wall. the roommate and fellow lacrosse player who found her dead, katie whitely, testified that huguely and love's relationship had grown increasingly rocky that spring when both discovered the other had been unfaithful. love's other roommate and lacrosse teammate caitlin duff also testified she says just days before her death, love showed her an angry e-mail from huguely, chastising her about another boyfriend and writing "i should have killed you."

but in his opening statement earlier, huguely's defense attorney said that e-mail was just an example of the drama between the two. don't think this was any kind of threat, she showed it to all her friends. he wanted to talk, to make up to work things out. the defense also offered a new theory of how love died it is our position everything about her terrible injury was unintended and unexpected, says hugueliers a attorney. lawrence promised jurors woe bring in medical experts to say the bleeding on love's brain came not from being shaken by huguely but 30 minutes of cpr. defense experts will say love died from a type of asphyxia after laying intoxicated face down on her bed. but prosecutor david chapman told jurors it was huguely's brief but violent attack that killed. he said, "she died of blunt force trauma to the head that caused brain injury you are going to be able to see with your naked eye in autopsy photos." the prosecutor also told jurors

it wasn't huguely's first attack. they say earlier that spring, a friend heard yeardley love cry for help and found that huguely had a choke hold on her. reporting live from charlottesville, i'm julie carey, news4. >> thank you. a 36-year-old man in virginia has been accused of having sex with a teenaged girl that he met online was denied bond today. police in prince william county say brian cutny met a 14-year-old girl from dunn police a teen chat room last month. investigators say cutny met the girl twice last week for sex. cops busted him yesterday when police say he tried to meet the girl for a third time at the forest park high school in woodbridge. in prince georges county, hundreds of people arrested and more than four dozen guns taken off the street he is. it is part of a new initiative this year targeting the crime hotspots in the country. darcy spencer tells us,is working. >> reporter: these guns were taken off the streets in prince georges county in january.

some of them were used in violent crimes. >> if you're gonna carry a gun in prince georges county, we are gonna catch you and lock you up. >> reporter: another gun was recovered this morning after a carjacking at a walmart on branch avenue in clinton. police say the suspect stole a cadillac pickup then crashed the truck during a chase. he was tracked down by a police canine hiding in a manhole. >> responded with a k-9 unit and helicopter, you know exgeneral search of the area where they ended up locating a suspect. az of right now, we know the victim of the carjacking was not injured. >> reporter: the arrest comes as police announce the results of their january crime initiative. more than 50 guns taken from criminals. >> i see a great difference in our community. we are one of the troubled communities. we are in suit land. i'm pretty sure some of the gun these got they got out of suit. >> reporter: not only are we gonna find you and arrest you, we are going to prosecute you, house you in our jails. you need to stop. >> reporter: in january, police

they have released 911 calls that detail the panic of a social worker in washington state after a man set himself on fire and killed a man and himself and two young sons. police say just before that man, his name josh powell, lit the ten gallons of gasoline, he used a hatchet on his sons. the social worker had dropped the kids off for a court-order

judges across maryland would increase. >> reporter: in january, home invasions with robberies and sexual assaults were reported in wheaton, bethesda and temple hills. kevin darnell ray has been arrested and charged in those cases. alan meyers, president of the maple wood civic association, says all 950 homeowners in his bethesda neighborhood fell victimized. >> they all feel it happened here, happened us, it could have been me, could i be getting in my car, have we mall into t-- h into the house and rob me. >> it could come up for a vote this legislative session. nasty out there, doug but really not too terrible, huh? >> kind of typical what we are seeing this winter. cold out there now, some areas seeing rain. that is probably the nastiest weather we have, the cold rain, not good for anybody. seeing snow up to the north and west. fortunately, our very warm

temperatures not allowing any problems on the roads. at least for now you can see what's happening outside. we take a look, plenty of cloud cover around the area, even some light rain falling around the district, mixing every once in a while with light snow but that's really about it. storm four radar showing it is about out of here right now. go ahead and stop this and show you where the snow is, montgomery county, around gaithersburg, the rockville area, the district still seeing just rain for the most part but mixing with snow every once in a while, leesburg, louden county, flakes flying but not much left for you. we have seen anywhere from a half an inch in ports of loudon county to an inch and a half in part of frederick county. we will continue to watch as this whole storm system moves on off. a couple of flakes left in fairfax county, too. you next prince georges, charles county, an all-rain event four this storm is continuing to move out. some of the accumulation toward northern montgomery county. this was taken early on.

take a look at this dramatic rescue caught on video. a dog fell into this icy pond in lakewood, colorado, yesterday. it treaded water for 20 minutes before firefighters arrived. one rescuer on the scene fell through the ice but he managed to push the dog out. he held onto the leash and the dog pulled him out.

the dog, named max is an 85-pound argentine mastive, a breed that likes to hunt, that's what got him into trouble. his owner says the two were taking a walk when max spotted a coyote running out of a bush. he took off and chased the coyote onto the ice. this morning, max and the rescuers appeared on a denver tv station's morning show. max bit anchor kyle dyer in the face. we are not showing the incident. he is in the hospital in fair condition. the dog's owner will be cited because the dog bit someone and because max was not vaccinated for rabies. in maryland, a pit bulldog is being nursed back to health after it was used as a bait dog to train other animals to five. the dog was rescued from the 600 block of andover road in lynnth couple last week. investigators are trying to figure out how he got into bad shape and who was responsible. the dog, nicknamed rocky road,

testimony began trial in the trial of george hugely, the former university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex-girlfriend. roommates and relatives of yeardley love testified. they had a rocky relationship leading up to her death. prosecutors claim huguely kill herd but during opening statement, the defense change third strategy, telling the jury that love was drunk and died of asphyxiation. dozens of guns have been taken off the streets in prince georges county. part of a new crime initiative that started at the beginning of the year. in january alone, more than 500 people were arrested. 50 guns confiscated. latest gun was recovered just this morning after police

yesterday. melissa mollet now with more on the investigation that's now under way. >> reporter: fire fives on championship buses, the first in 2009 and in the past 17 months, another four. the latest during tuesday morning's commute in white oak, one on december 27th in glenn echo, another the year before and one in silver spring no one has been injured. the first of the five fires was caused by a brake problem, the next two by issues inside the engine compartment, the fourth fire, an issue with the circuit breaker. the fire that happened on tuesday though still under investigation. >> reporter: david dice, the director of the department's department of general services says there is a difference between buses that need a chronic repair and bus that are unsafe. after the brake fire in 2009, he took the fleet out of service, he says these latest incidents are isolated. >> we don't put unsafe buses on the street. >> reporter: the union says they feel the county is being reckless, ignoring the safety of

for 13 years. he was not driving a police vehicle at the time of his arrest. a pastor running for the d.c. cup coup sill a leading a protest against a speed camera. the camera is located in the 1900 block of branch avenue southeast. today, reverend bill bennett led a group of protesters in calling for the camera to be removed. bennett is running for the ward 7 council seat. he says the camera at the bottom of a steep incline is really a speed trap. he says it is targeting residents, particularly seniors, who can't afford to pay the $125 fine. >> we are out here to say today to say with all due respect to the effort to calm the traffic, there's a better way to do it than to put this undue tax on people. it's unjust, we call upon the mayor, we call incumbent council member do something to remove this unjust tax. >> not all the neighbors are against the camera. the hill crest civic association fought for years to get the

camera put in place. they released a statement reaffirming their support for it and they say it is needed to slow down traffic there so that seniors and young people can safely cross branch avenue. the agency in charge of airport security is expanding a program that will let some passengers through security more easily. it is called tsa precheck, as erika gonzalez reports, the three major airports in our area will all be involved. >> worse now than it used to be. >> reporter: jenny odom is flying out of town. before she can board the plane, she will have to wait in line, take off her shoes, get out her laptop and get a body scan. with the precheck program, odom may not have to go through this anymore. after 9/11 the department of homeland security admit it is did not have the information or technology needed to identify travellers that posed the greatest risk.

new details tonight about top offenders in an unemployment scam in the district. officials say six of the top ten offenders are d.c. public school employees and most of those -- most were school bus drivers. 130 city employees are under investigation in the fraud case. officials say they were wrongly collecting unemployment paychecks while work and collecting city paychecks. the false claims are estimated to have cost the district more than $800,000 since 2009. there's a university in pennsylvania that's making the morning after pill available to students in a rather novel way. shippensburg university has put plan b in a vending machine in

sophomore game. he was the mvp last year as a rookie. it is in this area, one of the greatest rival police college basketball, george town and syracuse. unfortunately, soon-to-be extinct with syracuse moving to the acc this year, georgetown looking for its fifth win against a top 25 team this season. the hoyas ranked 12th in the country, syracuse, second. they are 23-1, the orange, and they are a very, very good team. a lot of history in this rivalry, started with boeheim, and big john thompson. last year, john thompson, iii, got the first win at the carrier dome and the most memorable moment of the season. the two teams split last season. tonight, the first chance and probably the last chance for the hoyas talented young freshman class to see what the carrier dome is all about.

so, good news for schools in maryland and children who attend them. the state is the first in the nation in advanced placement scores. the college board released its annual ranking today. maryland comes in first with nearly 28% of high school seniors scoring high enough on exams to earn college credit for ap classes. more than 30% of montgomery county graduates make the grade. this is the fourth straight year that maryland won the top spot. virginia comes in third place with nearly 26% of its students earning the high scores. a woman who says she had an
