jackie bensen is at washington medical center where colleagues are there to check up on him. jackie? >> it was a sudden, shocking accident. in the space of minutes this evening, rain slick on 395 became chaotic, the scene of a collision and a car fire. about 7:30, an alexandria fire and ems unit responded to the crash and the vehicle fire. they responded in the hov lane to reach the burning vehicle. that's when the unthinkable happened. >> well, our paramedic 35 years old, joshua weiss man, a seven-year veteran of our force, one of our absolute best medics, unfortunately was injured today critically in a fall off a bridge on 395 into four-mile run. z >> the creek is approximately 20 feet below the interstate and runs underneath it.

firefighter appeals the efforts of the paramedics. >> all our fire marshalls and colleagues do this every day. we hope this never happens, but unfortunately, sometimes it does. >> fire chief teal asks that people keep the injured paramedic in their prayers. reporting from the washington hospital center in northwest washington, jackie bensen, news4. >> jackie, thank you, and drivers are still dealing with the impact of tonight's incidences. this is a live picture of hooiihooi-395 right now. only one lane of traffic is getting by. meanwhile the southbound hov lanes are open and moving. the entire area was shut down for about two hours this evening as crews deeld with talt with t fall, the car fire and the freak accident. we turn to the weather now. very little snow today. few communities saw little of it stick. falling now is the temperature.

here's doug now. doug? >> that's what we have to look forward to tonight and into tomorrow morning, jim, is colder temperatures and the potential for a little bit of ice. radar showing our storm system moving on out of here north and west of washington. this is mostly a snow event, but south and east would be all rain, and that did include the district airport, the airport only recording a trace of snow earlier today. temperatures down in the freezing mark in leesburg, down toward gaithersburg. we will see some ice on those sidewalks. as you walk out the door in the morning, giving yourself extra time. you'll need something extra, too, for the upcoming weather. i'll show you what i'm talking about in a minute. >> we invite you to watch news4 today at 4:30 in the morning. d.c. police announced an arrest in the case of a school sex assault that happened last wednesday at ketcham elementary school in southeast.

an 11-year-old girl said she was assaulted after being told to escort a man to a classroom. under arrest tonight, 24-year-old davon wood of southeast. he's charged with second degree child sex abuse. a family in fairfax county is mourning the death of a single mother who was killed while driving to pick up her son. tonight her parents spoke to news4 shamari stone. >> when something like this happens, it puts a knife if your heart. >> reporter: teresa and william woodard are heartbroken, surrounded by flowers as they mourn over the death of their daughter in their fairfax county apartment. >> i feel like she just left me and didn't say anything. >> reporter: take a look at this horrific scene from monday in prince georges county. she was driving in evening rush hour to pick up her 11-year-old

son. a car crossed oncoming traffic, hit two cars and smashed into tawanda's car. she died on scene. >> it seems like it's not real. >> the four other drivers were okay. police took blood samples from the driver believed to have caused the accident to see if he was under the influence of blood or alcohol. they're waiting for test results. >> you just go day by day, minute by minute and pray a lot. >> reporter: family members remember tawanda as an avid reader who loved the bible, her church and her family. >> she loved life. >> reporter: police believe the driver in the ukon had been speeding. this case is still under investigation. in fairfax county, i'm shamari wood, news4. at one point during rush hour all the stations were out of order. metro had to close the north entrance. people were allowed only to exit. the south entrance was already closed for escalator replacement

that will take months. crowds of riders had to walk up steep flights of stairs tonight. a noticeably thinner george h hugoly walked into court in georgia today. he listened as friends described the couple's rocky relationship and alleged violence. the first day of testimony in this case. >> reporter: i should have killed you. that was part of an e-mail george huguely sent to yeardley love shortly before she was found dead in her apartment. her friend testified that love showed her the profanity-filled letter chastising her about another boyfriend. four days later, when another friend found yeardley dead, face down on a pillow, she directed police to huguely. he is accused of breaking down the door of love's bedroom in a drunken rage, shaking her and hitting her head against the wall. both sister lexie and mother

sharon broke into tears on the witness stand remembering that terrible morning of may 3rd, 2010 when they learned yeardley was dead. david chapman told jurors he'll show huguely's attack killed love. she died of blunt force trauma to the head and brain injury. you will be able to see it on autopsy photos. but huguely says he went to her apartment to make up, not to kill her. george's actions were anything but pre mmeditatepremeditated. he never had any intention of killing yeardley. the paramedics say love suffered from asphyxia from lying face down on her pillow. huguely's attorney concluded by telling the jury at most this is unintended manslaughter but not murder. frequent flyers will be able to get through security a little faster at all three of the

washington area airports. the tsa is expanding its pre-check program. that program allows members of certain frequent flyer programs to use fast lanes to get through security. the program has been successful at seven test airports. the department of homeland security says it's ready to expand it now to more airports, including national, dulles and dwi. a d.c. council wants the city to put the brakes on some of its speed cameras, but they say not so fast. today he led a group of protesters calling for a camera in the 1900 block of branch southeast to be removed. he said that camera at the bottom of a hill is a speed trap that targets people who can't afford the $125 fine. >> it's unjust. we call upon the mayor, we call upon the incumbent councilmember to do something to remove this unjust tax. >> the hillcrest civic

association fought for years to have that camera installed there. they say it makes crossing branch avenue safer for seniors and children. tonight more details emerged about the alleged affair between the late president john f. kennedy and an intern and the atmosphere inside the kennedy white house. wendy rieger has our report. >> reporter: both intoxicating and devastating. that is how mimi alfred describes her alleged affair with president kennedy. on rock center tonight, alfred revealed several details about the alleged 18-month tryst. and while she called most of their time together playful, she also discussed kennedy's apparent dark side. on one occasion she said the president asked her to, quote, take care of one of his aides while the three of them swam in a white house pool. >> it was a dare, but i knew exactly what he meant. take care of it? that was a challenge to give dave powers oral sex. i don't think the president thought i would do it, but i'm

ashamed to say that i did. it was pathetic, a sordid scene. dave was jolly and obedient as i stood in the shallow end of the pool and performed my duties. the president silently watched. >> alfred says there was also a pregnancy scare at one point. she says if she could change one thing it wouldn't be the affair, it would be telling her parents. now, many of those around during alfred's time in the white house have passed away. but members within the administration confirm she was an intern with special access, quote, unquote, to the president. obviously they cannot confirm those intimate details. jim, doreen? >> thanks, wendy. 911 call show a troubling delay in response to the house where a father in washington state killed his two sons. a social worker called 911 after josh powell locked her out. but dispatchers waited nearly eight minutes before they sent

any deputies. when asked when they would get there, the dispatchers said, quote, we have to respond to emergency, life threatening situations first, end quote. deputies arrived 14 minutes later. by then powell had blown up his house, killing himself and his two sons. a group of nuns outside chicago is fighting a strip club set to open right next to their convent. the $2 million gentleman's club will feature partially nude dancers. stone park's mayor said he agreed to allow the strip club only after the developers sued the town. the convent houses elderly nuns and gives training for young women who want to become nuns. >> we are supposed to be performing in an environment conducive to prayer, quiet and a place where they can grow spiritually. >> the owner of the strip club tells the chicago sun times he will limit the light and noise from the club. he says he plans to open the

the victim of a beating in atlanta, georgia says he is afraid for his life. as the fbi investigates the

attack on him as a possible hate crime. surveillance video shows three men approaching the 20-year-old victim over the weekend yelling anti-gay slurs. you can see them beat him to the ground. one attacker even used a tire. authorities hope the video will lead to some arrests. the company that made the stage that collapsed at the indiana state fair last year is facing a big fine. stage investigators said the company failed to have supervision or a disaster plan for the site. the company blames the state fair commission and the musical group sugarland for refusing to cancel a performance despite the impending weather. high winds evidently knocked over the stage. six people were killed. an inhaler called arrow shot. each inhaler is the size of a lipstick. it's filled with caffeine powder about the same as a large cup of coffee. critics are asking the federal government to look into it.

they're worried it will be used as a club drug to give people more energy to keep drinking. it's become an overnight symbol in the fight against cancer. the university of maryland's basketball manager, zach letterer is battling brain cancer. recently he did his best strong man impression from his hospital bed and now zaching is everywhere. angie goff has his story. >> zach letterer is the big man on campus, not for his size but his heart. the 18-year-old student from ellicot city first beat cancer at age 11. seven years later, it returned. >> when you hear cancer, the first thing that enters your mind is death, obviously chemo, hospitals. a terrifying thing. the doctor put it a nice way. another opportunity. what a great way to put it. >> two weeks ago, surgeons at johns hopkins removed a tumor from zach's brain. his reaction resonated throughout the country.

>> i'm drugged up. i don't remember it too well. i made a muscle and i said, dad, take a picture. >> reporter: his father posted the picture on facebook, his cousin struck the same pose and called it, rather than tebowing, zaching. before long, everybody was zaching. then there was fraternity guides, merrill coach turgeon, and even someone from times square. the mayor got word and made a call. >> can you get the governor to do any zaching? >> maybe i will, maybe i'll get him to zach. we just talked about how i'm feeling. i'm feeling as good as ever. >> justice strong. with fundraisers as strong as this one to support zach and others with cancer. >> everybody coming together to show their support just makes

tomorrow morning at 4:30 in the morning because jim and doreen will be up early -- it's not you guys? >> not tomorrow morning. >> okay, it's not them, but trust me, there will be people here. as far as that storm goes now, that storm 4 radar showing that that rain is out of here and continues to move well out of the area. in fact, it's in boston right now, a little light snow, new york city saw a little light snow. but this was not a big storm. once again, just one of those storms this winter that just did not bring a lot in the way of snow or even a lot in the way of rain. only about a tenth of an inch of rain down to the south. it was all down to the south around waldorf, dunkirk, atlantic area all seeing rain. back to the west, we're talking about west virginia now just to the south of mart iinsburg, 1.1 inches, and herndon coming in

with .4 of an inch of snow. as far as the temperatures go out there now, 37 degrees with winds out of the north-northwest at 8 miles per hour. many of us right around freezing. these are the areas we could start to see some of the wet roadways or some of the sidewalks or some of the grass begin to freeze overnight. i do expect to see temperatures into the upper 20s and maybe even the mid-20s in some locations, so you may want to give yourself some extra time tomorrow. there goes our storm system. a little chilly tomorrow but then a nice afternoon. temperatures about average with plenty of sunshine. friday still looking nice with sunshine and that nice weather continuing, but here comes our next storm system. a lot of storm potential for the mountains, but for us a little bit of rain and snow for us on saturday morning, some snow maybe during the day, but the cold air races in here on saturday. saturday, sunday and monday are going to be on the chilly side. tomorrow morning waking up to a little bit of fog in some areas.

georgetown down by three. he turns the ball over and in their last meeting, syracuse wins a thrilling 64-61. jim behon takes up win number 880. he passes up dean smith to be the third most winningest coach in division i college basketball history. georgetown players also thinking about assistant coach ken hunter. the 38-year-old collapsed after practice yesterday. according to the university, he's currently in the hospital undergoing tests. great crowd at verizon center tonight. not for the wizards and not even necessarily for the knicks, but for the second year sensation jeremy lind. he has gone out of the d league to nba starter this year, and tonight he shows that his first two games as a starter not flukey in a win over the lifrds. 52 points in his last two games. jeremy, 31 points in his last

it's their 20th win of the year. elsewhere gw falls to temple 79-72 and uva blows by wake forest 68-44. and on the college football front, quarterback back danny o'brien has told teammates he's not coming back to maryland. o'brien went from freshman of the year in the acc in 2010 to being benched last season. o'brien will likely finish out this semester and graduate this spring which would allow him to leave for another school and play football immediately. when we put that report out on twitter, he responded via twitter by saying, i am still at terp but did not say anything
