joshua weissman slipped through the grab and fell more than 20 feet into the ice below. >> he fell right here in the water. >> reporter: this woman had come from her nearby home to the foot path along four mile run. >> thank god he fell in the water. and once he fell in the water, him being a paramedic, the fire people that were up here, they were immediately over here. >> we got an unconscious medic lying in the river. >> it became a technical rescue where we had firefighters down in the creek as well as paramedics treating mr. weissman. >> reporter: authorities believe that weissman was trying to make his way to aid an occupant in one of the crashed vehicles. they believe he stepped over one of the barriers separating the spans not knowing of the open

for report of suspicious person in a jeep wrangler. police say there was an altercation and shots were fired. the jeep crashed nearby. the driver was found dead inside. the officer involved was a five-year veteran. he had minor injuries and is on routine administrative leave as the investigation of all this continues. jurors today saw and heard graphic details in the trial of the university of virginia lacrosse player who has been charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend. this is the second day of testimony in that case. a day that brought the victim's family to tears. julie carey is in charlottesville, virginia, with more. >> reporter: for the first time in this trial jurors saw photos of yeardley love's bruised and lifeless body and also heard from about a dozen friends and teammates of the two who testified about the couple's increasingly stormy relationship. on the witness stand today, the former university of north

carolina lacrosse player who interrupted an incident between accused killer george huguely and yeardley love two months before her death. it was february 27th when michael persons was visiting. he testified i heard a girl yelling saying help me, help me. he went toward the sound opened hughley's bedroom door and found hughley with a choke hold on yeardley love. he put david chapman in the position. i saw george with his arm around yardley's neck and they were both on the bed. yeardley was on her back on top of him. love then fled. the only thing she said to me when she got out of there was thanks so much and she couldn't breathe. defense attorneys sought to down play the incident asking about a phone call to check on love. asked francis lawrence she didn't express any fear of george, did she? no replied burns. burns also testified he was occasionally intimate with love. in yesterday's testimony burns

was the subject of an angry e-mail hughley sent just days before love's death reading, i should have killed you. but perhaps the most dramatic moments came when for the first time prosecutors showed jurors photographs of a dead yordly love, her body on the floor of her bedroom, emts still working on her, her eye bruised and swollen shut. love's mother and sister broke into tears, sobs audible in the courtroom. george huguely looked down. a few jurors initially looked away. said when shaw i made a comment of the fact she had a very large bruise on her face. so the officer leaned over and took a picture. charlottesville detective sean bails rushed to the scene when he learned cpr was being performed. prosecutors say a drunk, angry george huguely kicked the door in before shaking love and hitting her head against the wall. the young lady on the ground was

obviously the victim of some act of violence. a computer forensic specialist from the fairfax county police department also testified here today. he was the person who went through yeardley love's computer and found the fragment of that "i should have killed you" e-mail that hughley sent to love. prosecutors say hughley took yeardley love's computer with him when he left her apartment after the assault and tossed it in a nearby dumpster. live in charlottesville, julie carey, news 4. an arrest has been made in the sexual assault of an elementary school student in southeast washington. 21-year-old devonn wood of southeast is accused of inappropriate sexual contact with an 11-year-old student at ketcham elementary school. the student was assigned to escort wood around the building. wood tells police the student was acting inappropriately toward him and he complained to her about it, perhaps sparking her ak queue sags. coming up, a kindergarten teacher at a local school is in trouble tonight.

hundreds of people have been killed since the offensive began on saturday. hospitals and makeshift clinics are overwhelmed. there are reports of people being lefto bleed and even die on the streets. there are growing concerns that that city will run out of food and medicine. the united nations secretary general says a lack of unity on the security council has encouraged the syrian government to step up its attacks on civilians. a former top aide to gabrielle giffords now plans to run for her seat in congress. 66-year-old ron barber was the former district director. he was wounded in the arizona shooting rampage last year along with the congresswoman. today he announced he'll run in the special election to replace her. it's not yet clear if he plans to seek election when the term is up in november. giffords resigned last month to focus on her recovery. it was more than ten years ago president bush signed the no child left behind law into

effect. today president obama granted an opt-out request to several states. it's a move the white house says is in the best interest of american students. jay gray has our report. >> reporter: there is a new lisson plan for a hand full of states when it comes to the controversial requirements of the no child left behind law. >> it's about our classrooms and our children and how they perform. >> reporter: this afternoon president obama granted a waiveer to ten states releasing them from the strict requirements of the current law but still forcing them to show a viable plan for improving education. >> if you're willing to set higher more honest standards than the ones that were set by no child left behind, the flexibility to meet those standards. >> with what critics call unrealistic deadlines looming, at least 27 other states are considering waiver requests, a move they say is the way to

reach everyone's goal of stronger students and better schools. >> this waiver changing of standards, focusing on subgroups and achievement gap lets us get to where we need to be without the unreal liss requirements of no child left behind, and without the stigma of over half of our schools considered failing schools. >> reporter: the shift can't help but point out its own glaring failure, that the united states is nowhere close to the original intent of no child left behind, raising kids to grade level in the core subjects of reading and math. president obama insists his changes don't alter that goal. >> this is not a one-year project. this isn't a two-year project. this is going to take some time but we can get it done. >> reporter: but for now most agree the nation's grade when it comes to education is still an incomplete. jay gray, news 4. a new ad campaign has just been launched to help fight

truancy in the district. mayor vincent gray and the city's truancy task force unveiled the campaign today. the truancy rate in d.c. is about 12%, students who have missed 15 or more days of school without an excuse. officials are trying to reverse this trend with a campaign called the more you learn the more you earn. the ad es feature students who have struggled with truancy issues but were able to turn their lives around. >> i turned it around because i stopped hanging around that crowd and i wanted to be a successful person. >> you're hurting yourself actually, soy advise you to come to school get the education and do what you got to do to get out of school and think about once you get the diploma what you going to do. >> the campaign consists of print ads that will go on the sides of buses as well as radio spots on local radio stations. nice day out there today, man. a lot of sunshine. >> cold to start out the day. >> it actually felt like winter

today. we haven't had a lot of those winter days. it was on the cold side when you stepped out this morning. the sun came out. over the next couple days it's not just going to feel like winter it's going to feel like winter. temperatures will really be going down weekend. talking about some of the coldest air we've seen all winter long. that's not saying a whole lot when we've seen a winter like we have. temperatures today, believe it or not, above average once again. 47 degrees the high temperature today. it did feel like winter when you stepped out. low this morning, 33. many of you woke up to temperatures in the 20s. that's where i expect most of you to wake up tomorrow as well. right now 44 degrees with a dew point of 17. winds out of the west at about 5 miles per hour. not much going on around our area. the temperatures are really the only story for now. 37 degrees in lease berg. 37 in gaithersburg 42 in la plata and 40 towards pax river. temperatures to the north and west are going to fall off quickly. the sun made its way down about half an hour ago. the temperatures will continue to go down too.

37 in state college today. 35 in pittsburgh. that's the high temperature there, so you can see the coldest air just over the mountains. we have yet to really tap into that cold air this season. it is going to happen as we make our way into the weekend. storm four radar, all dry. i don't expect to see any rain tonight or through most of the day tomorrow. that's when we start to see some changes, watching a storm system out towards colorado right now. this storm system bringing some snow in through the panhandle of oklahoma and in and around the abilene, texas, area and lubbock, texas. that will move toward the east. as it does it will drag in colder air out of canada. speaking of cold air in canada they have been extremely cold up towards northern canada and alaska. all the cold air has been trapped up there all winter long, and we have remained on the mild side of things. but that's going to change this weekend. we're going to be open to the arctic, so to speak. that arctic air making its way all the way down toward the south, even around jacksonville florida, they'll get in on the

action with temperatures in the 30s. for us overnight low temperatures in the teens on sunday morning. future weather forecast, nice weather today with all the sunshine we saw. tomorrow starting sunny. here come the clouds an here come some moisture. most of us will see rain. back to the west, the blue ridge and west of i-81 that's where we could see snow. in the day on saturday, a storm system will bring through the cold air and i think everybody has a chance to see at least some snow on saturday. it's not going to be accumulating snow. trust me the temperatures the cold air, and the wind will be a much bigger factor this weekend than will be the snow. as we look toward the forecast looking at a clear sky, feeling more like winter out there, 35 to 40 degrees. tomorrow morning, temperatures on the slow side. we'll call it seasonably cold 24 to 31 degrees when you step out the door on your friday. believe it or not, that's still

john hinckley's lawyer today made one last attempt to convince a judge that hinckley should spend more time away from st. elizabeth's mental hospital. a judge heard closing arguments today in the case against hinckley. hinckley is the man who tried to kill president ronald reagan back in 1981. he's spent the last 30 years in saint eve's hospital. hinckley's lawyer is trying to prove that hinckley is no longer dangerous and should eventually be allowed to leave the hospital. a final decision is not expected until april or may. >> the pentagon is considering a rule change that could allow women in the military to get even closer to combat. the new rules would let women serve in front line units and in roles such as intelligence analyst and supply officer positions. the new rules would not let women fight on the front lines.

victims of mortgage fraud and foreclosure agreement. under the agreement mortgage loans will be reduced and a payout of about $2,000 each for thousands of americans for those who lost their homes when banks improperly foreclosed. jurors records saw graphic crime scene photos including photographs of yeardley love's body on the day she was found dead in her apartment in 2010. prosecutors are trying to prove hughley beat his girlfriend and classmate to death during a gel rouse rage. it was the second day of testimony in that case. here is doug with a look at the weather. jim, right now temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s in many locations. think about this 37 in gaithersburg, 44 in washington. how about waking up on sunday morning to temperatures 20 to 25 degrees colder than where they are right now. i'll explain more in a few

minutes. now that news conference in alexandria is getting under way this is regarding the paramedic who died today after a rescue attempt last night. let's listen. >> paramedic weissman fell approximately to to 30 feet down into four mile run creek below the highway. additional resources were summoned to the scene. a team of alexandria and arlington firefighters and paramedics working together made a valiant effort to rescue a most difficult rescue of paramedic weissman. he was removed from the creek and brought back up to interstate 95 where he was transferred to an arlington county paramedic unit and transported to washington hospital center. at that time he was listed as critical condition with life-threatening injuries. at this time i will turn the podium over to fire chief adam teal.

>> thank you all and i want to apologized for my appearance. i just left washington hospital center, the med star unit where i've been with joshua weissman's family, his extended family at the alexandria fire department for about the past4 hours. it's with a heavy heart that i announce the passing of paramedic joshua weissman at 4:25 p.m. today, february 9th. while responding to a car fire on interstate 395 at approximately 6:21 p.m. yesterday, february 8th 2012 paramedic weissman fell from the roadway and down an embankment where he suffered a severe head injury. after being rescued by alexandria and arlington county firefighters and paramedics with assistance from the alexandria police department, the arlington

county police department and the virginia state police and despite valiant efforts by the medical team at the washington hospital center paramedic weissman's injuries proved to be fatal. paramedic joshua weissman was hired as a medic one for the alexandria fire department on april 17 2006. josh was promoted to medic two on april 5th 2007. joshl most recently was assigned to the d shirt at station 206 right here on seminary road. josh had a recurring history of outstanding performance ratings, an active participant in and member of the ems training committee, the ems quality management committee where he was in charge of the call of the quarter award submissions and the ems 151020 committee, also involved in establishing a training committee. he was instrumental in the establishment of a field

training program for ems interns and personally served as a field training officer for two interns. this will be part and only part of his legacy to the alexandria fire department. josh overseed the alexandria jaycee's award in 2011 for his contributions to the field training program in ems and also received a valor award from the alexandria chamber of commerce. paramedic weissman was certified as an acting ems supervisor and served in that role on many occasions. josh was a successful candidate for a medic three position and as such was certified on november 1st 2010 as eligible to fill the medic three position as successfully completing the promotional assessment center. josh has received many letters from members of the alexandria community commending him for his work and his effectiveness while on scene at incidents. one mother wrote that josh revisited her home after responding to an accident in her

home that involved her mother-in-law and her young son. josh reassured the mother her son had been thoroughly checked out after being involved in the home accident when the boy's grandmother fell ill while holding the boy. that was the kind of person josh was, committed, dedicated, professional. to the end. paramedic weissman was certified as a nationally registered emergency medical technician paramedic and also held instructor status in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation. he was born in ithaca new york on february 23rd 1978. he and his wife rebecca resided in bristow, virginia. funeral arrangements are pending. we ask that you offer your thoughts and prayers for josh and his family. our department has not only lost an outstanding employee and

bridge last night while responding to an accident and car fire on 395. paramedic joshua weissman dead at the age of 33. a teacher at the montrose christian school in rockville is under arrest and accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. authorities say that relationship went on for more than a year. pat collins has our report. >> reporter: she's an unlikely criminal suspect, a 27-year-old kindergarten teacher at a christian school now facing felony sex chargers. montrose christian school it generally makes big headlines for the accomplishments of its nationally ranked basketball team. today's story you're not going to find on the sports pages. today's story involving criminal

sex charges, the suspect a teacher at the school. the victim a 16-year-old student here. now, it didn't happen on school property and it didn't happen during school hours. but it happened. the victim says it happened and the suspect, she says it happened, too. teacher ashley jean campbell they say she was having sex with a 16-year-old male student from the montrose school. they say it began back in the fall of 2010 and continued through january of this year. >> on several occasions the suspect picked up the victim student and took him to a park in montgomery county where they engaged in a sexual relationship. >> this all came to light last week after the school received an anonymous e-mail. in a statement today the school said miss ashley campbell no longer teaches at the montrose christian school. the school administration first

meteorologist doug kammerer in storm center 4. out there right now 44 degrees the current temperature out there with winds out of the west at about five miles per hour. take a look at stouffer night numbers, 24 in leesburg 21 in frederick, 31 in washington. these numbers will be a lot colder in two days, believe it or not. many of you will be about ten degrees colder than what you're seeing on the screen right now. tomorrow afternoon looking pretty good everly. we'll see sunshine early. clouds on the increase, high temperatures in the upper 40s to around 51 degrees inside the city. maybe some rain or snow mixed in well to the west. talking about west of i-81. there were protests today at about half dozen apple stores all over the world. that included the one in georgetown. people were there to complain about that company's working conditions in the shops where the iphones are made in foreign countries. the demonstrators delivered

petitions calling for reforms in those conditions at the company's factories in china and other overseas facilities. the protest grew from an internet petition drive launched two weeks ago. they had more than 100,000 signatures they presented. a spokesperson for apple says the company is trying to ensure safe conditions at all of its suppliers and that they're working to bring conditions at all factories in line with company standards. some of the fbi's secret files on steve jobs are now public and they reveal a different side of the iconic apple founder. several friends, co-workers and relatives questioned his honesty saying he would distort truth to achieve his goals. others said he was strong willed and stubborn. some said he was not supportive of his daughter born out of wedlock. the fbi revealed that jobs' grade point average was a 2.65 out of 4.0. the background check was done 20
