breaking news tonight a huge highway sign plummets on to interstate 66 hitting a truck on the road below. we'll have that story for you in just a moment. but we begin with old man winter who came roaring into the area today. a snow squall raked across the area today. take a look at this scene from

dumpfrey's, virginia. if you weren't outside to see the weather, you probably heard it. >> yes endeed, the skied darkened, the winds picked up and the arctic air moved back into the washington area really for the first time this winter season, current temperatures are falling fast, down to 33 in washington, down to 27 in martinberg, 27 degrees in winchester. if you have been outside, you know that's only half the story. winds gusting to nearly 40 miles an hour, all across the metro washington area right now, that's lowering the windchills into the teens and 20s and it's only 6:00 at night. wind advisory has been posted, these winds are going to continue to gust between 35 and 50 miles an hour for the rest of the evening. most of the light snow is coming to an end now. could see a few more flurries, wind whipped flurries during the night, biting cold, and tomorrow

strong winds and single digit windchills. a complete check of the forecast coming up in a few more minutes. and a remind they're you can stay with news4 for continuing coverage of our winter weather, you can also visit nbcwashington.com to get chuck's forecast any time. now to that breaking news in fairfax county, a massive highway sign has smashed on into interstate 66 and hit a pick-up truck below. miraculously nobody got hurt. they're still ftrying to figure out how this all happened. >> reporter: authorities say the incident happened right around 3:00 this afternoon, a large highway overhead sign fell down on to the eastbound lanes of i-66 in between west ox road and monument drive. there was a pick-up truck that was hit by this sign. we could see a pickup with front end damage on the back of a tow

truck, fortunately we're told, no one inside that pick-up truck was injured. around the time this happened, we're told severe weather was coming through the area, heavy winds and snowfall that was blinding and authorities are investigating to see if that was the cause for this highway sign to come down today on the eastbound lanes of interstate 66. reporting from fairfax county, darcy spencer, news4. now to tempers that flared at a high school basketball game that may have led to a bullet grazing an innocent woman in the head. this 19-year-old you see here was part of a large fight in wood bridge last night. the group moved over to the mall and a short while later, two of the same people were involved in another fight. he drove to the old triangle and cedar court area. >> we have basketballs games

that occur weekly and we have no incidents at all a. it is unusual for it to escalate into a shooting. >> the woman who was shot is expected to survive. the police are still trying to track down johnny kumara. police made an arrest for the attack on deoney jones. her loved ones take some comfort in . >> reporter: the stream of mourners entered covenant united baptist church, they had come to say goodbye to dioney logan. jones was attacked on east capital street on february 2, stabbed in what at this point is being called an unprovoked and an random attack. this memorial marks the scene of the crime. police say this happened as the victim was waiting for a bus

arm, a straw poll put romney another the top of the pile. that news came as sarah palin revved up the crowd. nbc's brian moore has the story. >> reporter: mitt romney edged out rick santorum in a straw poll saturday at the conservative public action conference this washington. newt gingrich and ron paul finished a distant third and fourth. it's completely unofficial, but could telegraph an important signal to voters in upcoming contests. the results were announced as maine wrappeded up their caucuses. >> we aren't red americans, we're not blue americans, we're red, white and blue and president, obama, we are threw with you. >> reporter: but the biggest draw was the presidential candida candidates, romney argued his conservative credentials. >> i was a self-conservative republican governor.

my car, the temperature dropped like six, seven degrees, within a couple of seconds, it looked like driving in today. >> when the cold front actually made it to my place, the temperature dropped to 10 degrees in less than 30 minutes, and if you were around around 3:00 or 4:00 in the metro area, the winter arrived, a little late but arrived nonetheless. northe northern montgomery county, the big winner of the day, two inches, that's all we got. but there's video of it right there, that's not tom, but that's not too far from tom's house. you folks up there were the big winners by far, we only had a trace amount of snow in downtown washington and most locations of all the reports that i read through today and there were probably more than 100 reports of snow, most of them were less than an inch, 97 of them, i counted, less than an inch of

snow. very few people had more than an inch today, and we're just about done, there's a new more flurries coming around late this evening, but it's not going to add too much. the temperature has been tumbling, 33 now in washington, the dew points are now dropping into the single digits, that's one of the true signs of the arctic air, the extremely low dew points, that's the dryness in the atmosphere. winds out of the north at 33, gusting at 38 miles an hour at international airport. 30 degrees at dulles international airport. springfield, just about at the freezing mark now. in the blue ridge, temperatures falling into the mid and upper 20s and with the wind howling out there, look at the windchills, 9 in hagers town and these windchills will be dropping down to near zero by the time you get up on your sunday morning.

the winds are still gusting to 43 miles an hour in leesberg. your saturday evening planner, bundle up, windchills single digits and teens, even downtown falling into the mid 20s by 11:00 p.m. so a wind advisory has been posted all across the area, until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, the bulk of the accumulating snow is headed out on the eastern shore. your friends at ocean city are getting in on the snowfall. and a little bit more upstream from us in southern pennsylvania, that is aiming in our direction, so i do think we have an opportunity to see a little bit more light snow and snow flurries over the next couple of hours. here's in our future weather cast, that little possibility of snow flurries, coming right through the washington area, accompanied with the winds, all that should be gone before you get up tomorrow morning. windchills near zero at sun rise

tomorrow morning and then staying awfully cold for the rest of the die. light snow and snow flurries, turning much colder, windy and cold, windchills between 5 below and about 10 or 15 above. actual air temperature is 15 to 23. tomorrow partly sunny, still windy and told, winds out of the west at 30 miles an hour. that will keep windchills in the single digits and teens for most of the day. there's a whole lot of money up for grabs in tonight's powerball lottery drawing, $325 million to be act. the big payout has jumped by $125 million in just one week. you can play power ball in d.c., maryland and virginia. officials say if nobody hits the jackpot, we could see the biggest jackpot ever for the next drawing. the adorkable is hosting
