hospital, and the coroner reveals where the singer's body is found. good evening, everyone. i'm aaron gilchrist. we'll have that story for you in just a moment. we begin, though, with the weather. another night of bitter, bitter cold and wind. meteorologist chuck bell is in storm center 4. chuck, make it go away. >> i can do that, aaron. it's going to take a little time, but we can certainly take that request under advisement out there. another cold night coming and as you make your plans to get your work and school week started monday morning, get the extra layer of warmth ready to go one more time. outside this evening live pictures of roslyn, virginia in arlington county. a very cold night indeed. temperatures are already back down into the mid 20s now. about 26 degrees there in roslyn. 28 in washington. 21 in manassas. leesburg 27. frederick, maryland also 27 degrees. wind chills have been dropped down into the teens and low 20s. so a very cold start for sure. the one good news is we've gotten rid of all the snowflakes flying across the area. the nearest snowflakes to us are staying across parts of southern

pennsylvania. your monday planner, plenty of sunshine coming our way. still a little on the cool side tomorrow, with highs only only up around the 40 degree mark. there's warmer air and another mention of a possibility of some snow in the seven-day forecast. don't go away. >> we'll see you in a bit. thanks, chuck. an enormous tree sliced through a home in fairfax county today. it pinned a woman in her bed. that came down during the strong winds earlier. just one example of this weekend's wild weather out there. news 4's darcy spencer joins us live now from the national mall with more on that. hey, darcy. >> hi, aaron. yeah, i wish he could make it go away also. the winds are not as bad as they were last night but if you take a look at the flags at the base of the wab wash monument you can see the winds are still pretty strong and the national mall last night and tonight is a virtual goecht town. the cold and wind are driving people inside. in chinatown people were bundled up in heavy coats, hats, and gloves for one of the coldest nights of the season. >> i'm holding up very well.

i have my longjohns on. i have a hoodie. so that's keeping me warm. >> reporter: this weekend has been marked by weather extremes. saturday there was a blast of snow. some in upper montgomery county had to scrape it off their cars. in fairfax county the quick-moving storm left behind a dusting. and a flash of flurries caught many off guard. >> yeah, yeah. a little flustered, you know. it would be nice to have a scarf right now. but yeah, just came out of nowhere. >> reporter: strong winds have made being outside miserable. this woman, well, she had a good reason for not dressing warmly. >> i'm going salsa dancing upstairs. and there's salsa dancing here at lucky strike every sunday. so we brave the cold briefly so that we can be appropriately dressed for salsa. >> reporter: in the burke area fairfax county strong winds blew over a tree that smashed into a home on lavery court. the tree pinned a woman in her bed. it took rescuers an hour and a half to set her free. >> i've seen a lot of trees on

homes. but this is probably the worst that i've ever seen. >> reporter: cold, snow, and wind, all signs that it really is winter. >> it's not that bad until the wind starts blowing. and then it's like, oh, boy. the wind is really cold. >> reporter: that's exactly right. fire and rescue officials there in fairfax county say the woman who was injured today is expected to make a full recovery. they say she is lucky to be alive. and aaron, if you're heading out tonight and you're leaving work or coming out tomorrow morning, make sure you dress appropriately. we're not exaggerating here. it is bitter cold. reporting live from the national mall, darcy spencer, news 4. >> i will follow that advice. thank you, darcy. there are new details tonight surrounding the death of whitney houston. the los angeles county coroner confirmed tonight houston was found in the bathtub of her beverly hilton hotel room yesterday. an autopsy has been completed, but the results are going to be held until toxicology results are in, which could be more than

a month away. also tonight we are learning that houston's daughter, bobbi kristina brown, is out of the hospital after she was admitted earlier today for stress. meanwhile, musicians remembered whitney houston at the grammy awards tonight in los angeles. mark barger has more. >> reporter: the music industry's biggest names gathered to celebrate their best sunday night at the grammy awards but also to honor whitney houston. >> it's a tragedy. we were -- i'm lost for words. it's really hard. >> you know, we both feel like she was family and like we lost one of our own. >> reporter: the grammys acted quickly to include a tribute to houston by singer jennifer hudson. she's just one of a generation of performers influenced by the pop legend. >> i was too nervous to speak to her but i literally just wanted to rub my shoulder against hers just to say that i rubbed shoulders with whitney houston. >> reporter: even as the singer's memory was honored, an autopsy on her body was completed. but the l.a. coroner's office said an official cause of death is weeks away, pending the results of toxicology tests.

>> there's reports that she maybe was drowned or did she ov overdose, but we won't make a final determination until all the tests are in. >> reporter: earlier in the day houston's 18-year-old daughter bobbi kristina was briefly hospitalized and treated for stress. the teen's father, bobby boun - brown -- >> i love you, whitney houston. >> -- let his emotions show during a performance in memphis. over the past week reports of erratic behavior on houston's part had surfaced including a disheveled appearance at a pregrammy party thursday. a close friend of the singer recounted their final contact, an exchange of voicemails saturday morning. >> just that normal sound of kim, where are you? call me back, i sneed to speak with you. that was it. i'll always save you as long as i can. ♪ i look to you >> reporter: just as whitney houston's fans will cherish her incomparable talent. mark barger, nbc news. >> and as the medical examiner

tries to determine how whitney houston died, people who saw her in the days before her death have differing accounts of how together she was. a makeup artist who worked on houston before a nightclub performance on thursday says she looked fine but after that performance photographers who snapped these pictures said she looked out of it. and the "los angeles times" reporter who saw houston at a press event thursday says he was embarrassed at the way she acted. >> i guess the shock of seeing whitney, it started to wear off as the day went on because now you're just seeing kind of this woman who might be intoxicated. you know, might have had one or two many drinks and is just cutting loose. >> all right. now detectives are trying to figure out what houston did friday and yesterday, which turned out to be the last day of her life. stay with news 4 for continuing coverage of the death of whitney houston. you can find the latest information by visiting nbcwashington.com. the trial of george huguely

continues tomorrow in charlottesville, virginia. the university of virginia lacrosse player is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love, during a drunken rage in 2010. it was an emotional day of court proceedings on friday, when police played huguely's videotaped statement of what happened. huguely broke down in tears in the courtroom during a part of the interview when the detective told him love was dead. the trial is expected to last at least another week. volunteers sifted through tons of paper at a washington state recycling center today looking for anything that josh powell might have dumped before killing himself and his two sons in a house fire last week. authorities received a tip that powell may have dumped some papers at the recycling center in the days before the murder-suicide. powell was the prime suspect in his wife, susan's disappearance. she went missing in 2009 and still has not been found. the two boys were laid to rest in tacoma yesterday. we turn now to the race for the white house tonight. a new controversy is brewing

over a straw poll taken at the cpac gathering this weekend. mitt romney won that poll, but one of his conservative rivals says he thinks romney paid for votes. brian mooar has the story. >> reporter: mitt romney ended a disastrous week with symbolic victories in the main caucuses and an influential conservative conference straw poll that rick santorum had hoped to win. >> but governor romney does a couple of points better. >> reporter: now santorum suggests romney's camp stacked the audience. >> well, you have to talk to the romney campaign and how many tickets they bought. we've heard all sorts of things. >> reporter: not true, says romney's campaign. which notes romney also edged out santorum in a related phone survey. the presidential contest slows down until the arizona and michigan primaries at the end of the month. but in washington there is no end in sight to the fight over church-related couldn't r relt coverage.

the house had hoped they'd ended the controversy with a compromise, making insurance companies make up the cost. >> there's a consensus this is the right approach. that doesn't mean everybody agrees with it. >> it's an accounting gimmick or fig leaf. it's not a compromise. the president's doubled down. >> reporter: and house gop leaders say they have the votes to stop the president's plan. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. >> here on the news 4 super screen we're taking a look at where the candidates stand after the nine primary contests. the states -- according to the delegate count this is where things stand. romney leads the pack with 84 delegates. newt gingrich has 29. rick santorum has 14. and ron paul trails with 11 delegates so far. there are just two primaries left in the month of february in arizona and in michigan. you see those right here on the 28th. then in washington state they'll

hold a caucus on march 3rd. after that it's super tuesday. 12 states will hold contests including virginia. the magic number the candidates are looking for is 1,143 delegates. that's what they need to claim the nomination and president obama will be back in virginia this week to unveil his 2013 budget proposal. the president will make his pitch at the annandale campus of northern virginia community college. it puts him back in a state that he carried in the 2008 election and one that he needs to win again this fall for re-election. mr. obama's proposal aims to achieve $4 trillion in deficit reductions over the next decade with restrained government spending and higher taxes for the wealthy. republicans are calling it a repeat of failed policies. coming up next on news 4, a massive highway sign falls on a truck. now virginia's taking action to prevent another accident. plus we'll introduce to you a sport that is taking tightrope walking to a new extreme. and we'll take you inside a very special valentine's dance.

in 2007 and that its signs typically get inspected every five years. highway officials still trying to figure out why the sign and the arm there, the whole thing just came tumbling down. well, millions of people saw it at the super bowl halftime show, and it had a lot of us talking. it's called slack lining, where acrobats do tricks on a nylon strap suspended above the ground. brian pinkney shows us more. >> reporter: a two-inch piece of webbing, a sort of flexible balance beam. but don't call it a tightrope. >> the difference between slack line and is tightrope walking is the fact that the line actually moves with slacklining. tightrope walking is held stable. snowboarders, surfers, anyone that does any kind of balance sport can benefit from slacklining. >> reporter: getting started is all about patience and balance. >> well, you get started by just trying and just taking some steps on the line. he with actually offer beginner slacklining courses here. >> reporter: once you find your footing here, it's time to try

the trick line, something 14-year-old alex mason has mastered. >> i really like how much practice it takes. and it's just a really, really fun sport. >> reporter: alex discovered slacklining two years ago at a birthday party in this gym. this year he took third at a national event in boston. >> when you first step onto the slack line, you realize these guys make it look really easy. but after just a little bit of time you too could be walking the thin nylon line. >> clearly his first time doing that. i have no interest. you saw the guy in the halftime show. >> yeah. >> because that line went in places it should not go is all i have to say about that. >> it would not surprise me if the youngster there was a natural-born snowboarder as well. you know? >> well, speaking of snow, we got a little yesterday, but the cold air has not left. >> not yet. >> it's rough out there, chuck. >> it's thinking about leaving but it hasn't actually packed its bags and left town just yet.

we're going to have to deal with the bitter cold -- i say bitter cold. we're not into the single digits -- >> oh, come on. >> we're not even close to record low temperatures. >> 27? >> we are below freezing. >> all right. bitter. i'm bitter. how about that? >> he's convinced. it's the dead of winter in aaron's world. let's take a look outside. there's the kennedy center. look at that. the water on the potomac, not even frozen. barely any ice to be found. >> find a canal. >> indeed. temperatures are below freezing across the area, and it is a cold night out there. i've had a couple of people write in when we've referred to weather this winter as bitter cold and they remind me that bitter cold would probably have to be a little colder than this. but compared to what we've had this winter, this is as bitter as we can make it. 28 right now at national airport. winds out of the northwest at nine niles per hour. high temperature today 33 after a 23 degree start. and i point this out because today was 10 degrees colder than average. that ties it with the coldest day of the winter compared to

average, tied with january the 4th. the only other day this winter that was ten degrees colder than average. outside right now 24 in hagersto hagerstown, 25 in the panhandle of west virginia, 25 in waldorf and la platta, 25 also in fredricksburg. you factor in the winds which are still a bit gusty but nowhere near as strong of a wind as we had at this time last night when the winds were gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour. but wind chills nonetheless back down into the teens right now. and starting you off tomorrow morning expect single digits and teens again for wind chills. nothing showing up on storm 4 doppler close to us. fading snowflakes across parts of central pennsylvania. they're not going to make it to us. our next chance of precipitation is this big storm system in the lower parts of the united states. oklahoma and texas getting rain and snow tonight. this moisture is headed in our direction. it's not going to be that impressive of a storm when it gets here. but it is going to bring us our next chance of some precipitation anyway.

so we'll be off to a breezy and cold start tomorrow but bright sunshine for most of tomorrow afternoon. the high clouds start coming in mid to late day tomorrow. this is 7:00 on our future weather forecast model. high pressure going down to our south. the clouds lower and thicken a bit so that by the time we get into the mid to late morning hours on tuesday morning might see a couple of snowflakes west of the blue ridge. then by late tuesday afternoon going into tuesday evening a chance of some light scattered showers. rain showers primarily coming into the washington area. might end with a passing snowflake. but there just isn't enough cold air around by that time to cause any real problems. we'll be following it, though, just in case. so overnight tonight into your monday morning, clear, cold, a bit breezy. wind chills single digits and low teens. wake-up temperatures 15 to 23. then tomorrow high temperatures only into the upper 30s and low 40s. so it will be a chilly day. but the chill really doesn't last that long. our average high now is 46. we'll be back up above average for tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, and sunday. you get the picture. tomorrow's the last of what would be considered cold weather

cranking it up. the playoffs are creeping up on us pretty quickly. so much for the capitals making a statement in the big apple this afternoon. the capitals had a chance to take down the beast of the east in the new york rangers. instead they come up short again. and the playoffs are something the capitals would be watching and not participating in if the postseason started today. dale hunter still trying to work out the kinks. three months after returning to d.c. we pick it up in the third period. capitals down 3-1. they have the puck. and you don't see this very often. john carlson the slapper redirected past henrik lundqvist. he didn't see it. that makes it 3-2. and the caps are back in the game. or are they? under two minutes to go. jay beagle gets it to alex ovechkin. nice move right here, but he just can't finish it. take another look. ovie fools ryan mcdonagh. capitals fall 3-2. they are still ninth place in the conference. they host san jose tomorrow.

then it's a four-game road trip. mcgee and the wizards also on the road visiting detroit. top shelf tonight. second quarter, john wall to the aforementioned mcgee. he had 22 points and 11 boards, did mcgee. wall 15 assists. we are tied at 45 at the break. third quarter, wizards starting to pull away. wall to nick young in the corner. and nikolai buries it. 22 as well. part of a 28-4 wizards run. the wizards win big. 98-77. up next, a valentine's day trip to portland on tuesday. college hoops. dikembe in the house to watch georgetown take on st. john's. second half, hoyas up by three. the freshman greg whittington had the best game of his college career. a career-high 12 points. puts georgetown up by six. but those pesky wouldn't go away. back within three.

what do you think is the perfect way to warm yourself up op an ice cold winter day? how about a dip in a natural hot spring? that's exactly what some monkeys decided they were going to do in the snowy city of nagano, japan. and somebody way camera decided to put that on tape. the staff says the monkeys like to take a dip in the warm springs there early in the morning before they head off into the forest for a little afternoon delight, or whatever monkeys do in the afternoon. this event has become wildly popular and actually attracts hundreds of tourists every year, to watch them in the spring.
