♪ >> new developments revealed today about whitney houston's final hours as the world remembers a singing legend. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. new details are emerging in the death of singer whitney houston including plans for her funeral. >> it is scheduled to take place later this week in newark, new jersey. it is believed the wingham funeral home is handling td arrangements, the funeral home that handled arrangements for houston's father in 2003. >> the funeral may be held at the prudential center according to "the new jersey star ledger." nbc's sarah edwards reports from l.a. with the latest on houston's death investigation. >> reporter: the los angeles county coroner's office has announced the body of whitney houston has been released to her family and sent to an undisclosed funeral home. as the world continues to mourn the loss of an entertainer with unparalleled talent the assistant county coroner

confirms investigators found prescription pill bottles in the singer's room but are looking into all causes of death. >> the person could have suffered a heart attack or something and no matter what medication they're taking until we run a toxin level we aren't going to speculate. >> reporter: the coroner's office says it could take six to eight weeks to determine the exact cause of death. it is no secret that after a long battle with substance abuse the troubled star was in the midst of making a comeback. >> it's incredible pressure. physically, emotionally, in every respect. really reconditioning her instrument, her voice, getting it into top notch form, the pressure of wanting to sound as good as she always did. >> nan a recent statement from the beverly hills police department, authorities confirmed that one of houston's personal assistants found her body submerged in the bath tub and pulled it out of the water before alerting hotel security. no foul play is suspected in the

money to create new jobs. congressional republicans say this budget ignores a spending crisis threatening to crush the economy. brian mohr reports. >> reporter: president obama unveiled the budget that would slash $4 trillion from the deficit over the next decade. >> i am proposing difficult cuts that frankly i wouldn't normally make if it weren't absolutely necessary but they are. >> reporter: but the $3.8 trillion spending blueprint also proposes hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending that includes $8 billion to train community college students like these for careers in health care, transportation, and manufacturing. the budget also calls for broad cuts in government and military spending and nearly $2 trillion in tax increases. >> do we want to keep these tax cuts for the wealthiest americans or do we want to keep investing in everything else? >> reporter: the president calls

it shared responsibility. republicans call it a remash of old ideas. >> there is not anything in this budget to really get our economy moving again. >> reporter: gop critics say it ignores social security, medicare, and other drivers of the debt and deficit. >> somebody asked me if this budget was dead on arrival. i said no it's not dead on arrival. it's debt on arrival. >> reporter: senate majority leader harry reid has already said he doesn't see any need to bring a budget up for a vote and even if he did it is unlikely lawmakers will reach an agreement in this election year. house republicans planned to uncover their plan this month. brian mohr, news 4. there as major cleanup under way in athens after yesterday's violent riots. fiery clashes broke out in the capital as the greek parliament approved a new round of strict austerity measures. a starbucks was set ablaze. athens has been volatile now for months but the deep spending

cuts sparked a new level of violence. the austerity measures are part of a new bailout plan from the european union and the international monetary fund. the greece debt deal did have a positive effect on wall street on this monday as banks were big gainers. the dow is up almost 72 points. nasdaq gained 27. and the s&p 500 was up about 9. it was also a good day for apple. stock of the tech giant topped $500 a share for the first time. the mercury moved up after our bitter cold weekend but get ready, folks. we could see more storms in the week ahead. >> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has details now. veronica? >> reporter: that's right. a couple more opportunities to get some little systems coming through here. maybe producing more of what we had this past weekend and, of course, a lot of cold, too, this weekend. take a look at some of the morning temperatures. we started out in the teens in a couple locations. you folks in gaithersburg and clarksburg at 19 degrees.

university of virginia la crosse player accused of murder is now entering its second week. today the prosecution continued to present its case. george huguely of chevy chase is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend and fellow la crosse player yardley love. today jurors read personal correspondence between the two including the now famous letter in which huguely allegedly wrote, quote, i should have killed you. they also heard about items taken from huguely's apartment that were allegedly covered in red stains. there was also testimony about injuries found on huguely's body after love was found dead in her apartment in 2010. the medical examiner who conducted the autopsy is expected to take the stand this afternoon. prosecutors believe huguely beat love in a jealous rage. we'll have more in a live report from charlottesville coming up at the top of the hour. today marks one month since the cruise ship costa concordia capsized off the coast of italy. relatives of people still missing tossed bouquets of red

roses into the sea in remembrance. the 15 missing people were presumed dead after authorities determined the search too risky. the search hit a reef after questionable decisions by the captain on january 13th. some of the personal papers of jacqueline kennedy onassis are now open to the public. the papers were donated to the john f. kennedy presidential library and museum by the former first lady's children. some of the notes are handwritten and relate to her efforts to restore the state rooms of the white house and the televised core of the building she conducted on february 16th of 1962. the director of the kennedy library says the papers illustrate the former first lady's legendary attention to detail and her range of understanding of art, history, and diplomacy. when we come right back this afternoon on news 4, she didn't talk to anyone for months. ♪ there is a fire starting in my

he was spot on. he said, look. not shoving religion down anyone's throat but for me, i'm trying to figure out the right way to open this show. for me this is important. i'll tell you what else is important, for whitney houston who grew up singing at new hope baptist church in the choir, became a soloist there in the '70s. it was a foundation in her life. i thought it was a beautiful moment. he said a prayer that he wrote himself. executive producer of the grammys telecast ken ehrlich told me he wrote it last night. it was his idea and i think it struck the right chord. he did a great job. >> you know that meant a lot to her mom and her family, too. as you mentioned, grew up in gospel. there was a snippet of houston we saw on the big screen with her and ththem. do you think they did enough to remember her throughout the evening? >> the grammys take months and months of preparation. here it is saturday afternoon at 3:30 in the afternoon and you find out what's happened. i think they did just enough.

they knew people would go impromptu and ad lib and do it on their own and say what they wanted to say but i thought adding alicia keys and bonnie rait and the big performance by jennifer hudson would be what we would hang our hats on and remember the most. i thought it was very appropriate and yes just enough with l.l. at the top. i don't think any more would have been possible. and the grammys had to go on. >> some people wanted jennifer hudson to go on and sing a longer version. maybe sing more than one song. do you think that was enough? >> it is enough. like ken ehrlich told me this morning, he also didn't -- he wanted her to do just enough. he didn't want her to do the giant, big, belting notes. he didn't want her to go for it all the way which jennifer can do. he wanted her to take an easy approach, get it done simply, just a piano player to accompany, nothing bigger, and that would be appropriate. it's whitney's big note and it

sweet. katy perry got a lot of attention for her performance last night, billy, and some folks were saying those fiery lyrics were clearly targeted at her ex. >> oh, yeah. i think so. katy is totally in the business of stirring it up right now and i would agree entirely. plus look at that little cat suit she had on. she was showing off the new body. showing off the fact that she was single. she is in a cage ready to break out. look. a lot of people were very expressive last night. given the fact that it was what we were dealing with and processing, the death of whitney houston you have nicky menage going like i don't know what that was or how you saw it on tv. i was in the audience watching. to me it felt quite inappropriate and just out of place. >> it was a little -- we were saying the same. some were using that mess word and i love nicky menage but last night was not the time. what you got coming up tonight, buddy?

it's a big night here on nbc. >> that's right. a night for round three of the blind auditions. angie goth and big tigger join us in the studio. >> we have round two of the blind auditions behind us. big tigger, we were both watching this together. a lot of talent and diversity. what did you think? >> i thought it was awesome. it's awesome to see the stories behind these people, you know, this one guy who is dealing with hiv, another person who is homeless. the one person who has been trying to sing forever. so to see all the backgrounds in these people and look into their lives is the best part of the show. >> definitely adds another dimension to the music we see. this was a highlight from last week's show. this is lindsay pavillo. she kind of had the angie winehouse kind -- or amy winehouse. sorry. too many angies. but amy winehouse kind of sound. you said it didn't work for you. >> not for me.

weekend. >> the winner of "the voice" is -- >> i didn't believe it. i convinced myself to be ready for the blow that i wasn't going to win. they called my name and i just was in shock. i really was. i didn't think it was going to happen. "the voice" has completely changed my life and it changed the course of my career. this time last year i was worrying about how to pay next month's bills and now fortunately that is not an issue at the moment. i'm on tour with a new album out. ♪ time after time >> "time after time" is one of my all time favorite songs. i really love the song and i did it in my way and i wanted to, you know, kind of convey to people at home and to the coaches that had their chairs

a judge in pennsylvania has lifted some restrictions on jerry sandusky who is under house arrest. he will be able to visit some of his grandchildren. he is accused of molesting young boys. >> reporter: at a hearing friday, jerry sandusky complained his house arrest prohibited contact with his 11 grandchildren and could only communicate with them through wife dottie. >> when i had a wife who came home after visiting with grandchildren or who is sitting there when grandchildren call on my birthday and they ask to talk to me and she has to tell them

that they can't, i'm sensitive to that. >> reporter: monday the judge lifted that restriction and ruled that provided at least one parent is present sandusky could now have unlimited contact as well as visits from his grandchildren. he can also have up to three two-hour visits a week from adult friends. he can now leave his house to assist his attorneys in preparing his defense. the judge rejected, however, a request from prosecutors that sandusky be confined to the inside of his house after neighbors complained he had been seen repeatedly on his back porch peering at a nearby playground full of children. the judge also denied a prosecution request to have an outside jury brought in for sandusky's trial in mid may on 52 charges that he sexually abused young boys over a 15-year period. and that's news 4 at 4:00.
