>> thank you. millions of whitney houston fans are learning they will no longer be aiblg to attend a public memorial. her family announced a private funeral will be held saturday at the new hope baptist church in newark, new jersey, the same dhuch where houston sang as a child an her mother still attends. the funeral homeowner where houston's body is being held explained the family's position today. >> they have shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world. this is their time now for their farewell. >> houston's family is asking that in lieu of flowers fans donate money to the whitney houston academy of performing arts which the singer attended the east orange new jersey school when she was a girl. the coroner said it could take weeks before an official cause of death is announced.

a warning tonight from d.c. police about a recent crime spree in northwest d.c. in the span of just a few hours yesterday there were three robberies starting at just after 7:00 p.m. on warren street, just a block off from busy wisconsin avenue. police tell us three men approached an individual and at least two of them punched the victim. then, just a few hours later, two masked men approached a woman in the 4300 block of garrison street. at least one suspect showed a gun. they got away in a dark sedan. then, just a few minutes later, they robbed another person along busy western avenue not far from the maza gallery shopping center. in that case, the suspects also displayed a gun here. at this point, police believe the robberies may be linked. none of the victims, however, were seriously injured. but community leaders say the nature of these crimes is very zuri disturbing. >> you're just a step away from

a serious assault or even a death, and so it's especially urgent because these people have guns and because they now have shown at least some tendency to physically assault somebody. >> now, police are urging anyone who sees anything suspicious to give them a call. the payroll tax cut expires at the end of the month, and president obama is asking average americans to turn up the heat on congress. the white house today asked people to call, e-mail or tweet their representatives asking they not stop until a bill is on his desk. that tax cut amounts to about $40 per paycheck per person. the president says failing to extend it could jeopardize the economic recovery. congress is in recess all next week leaving only two days the following week to act before the cut expires. the man expected to lead china through the next decade is here in washington tonight for a visit. the vice president is slated to become the president of china

next year. president obama welcomed him today to the white house. both leaders hoped the meeting would strengthen the bond between the two countries but there have been differences on issues of human rights, currency and fair trade. >> with expanding power and prosperity also komz comes incr responsibilities. so we want to work with china to make sure everybody is working by the same rules of the road when it comes to the world economic system. >> the chinese vice president brought up human rights later at the state department. he said that china has made what he called tremendous achievements in human rights in the past 30 years but he acknowledged there is still room for improvement. things got kind of nasty today at the d.c. council. a closed door meeting to discuss ethics and other issues erupted at one point in niame-calling ad cursing. it was supposed to be a retreat to help council members get along better. tom cherwood is here with this

>> reporter: the media brings people together. despite that good humor, officials confirmed that at large member david ka tania exchanged angry curses over finances of a hospital in southeast washington. the private valentine's day retreat at the washington convention center comes amid other clashes, and, as one council member already has resigned and pleaded guilty to felony corruption. chairman kwame brown's 2008 council campaign is under federal criminal investigation but the chairman says this council is trying to work together. >> this is a training that we're having to try to go over the enl icks law. this is training, personnel training as it relates to the comprehensive ethics reform bill, making sure everyone is very clear. clearly valentine's day is love. this is a good time for us to show our love for ourselves and our residents, how reprepare to move forward. >> i guess it was a lovely day for it except for the built of

cursing between barry and katan katania. >> thank you, tom! two occupy d.c. protoefltors are facing charges after they were arrested last night after they set up tents on a sidewalk on 14th street northwest. at first officers told the protestors to leave. wh when they wouldn't budge, they were arrested. turning now to the weather on this valentine's day. started off pretty nice, but now a few sprinkles are start willing to roll in. >> let's get the latest from doug in storm center 4. >> hey, guys. that's what we were talking about yesterday, this little storm system coming in but losing its punch before it got hooer. most of us saw pretty good sunshine just in time for a nice lunch hour earlier. the clouds have rolled back in, and we're seeing a few sprinkles. current temperature 50 degrees with winds out of the south at about 13 miles an hour. they've been fairly gusty, upwards of 20, 25 miles an hour through the afternoon. currently 48 in gaithersburg and

>> announcer: you're watching "news4 at 5." so you're eating less meat, but you're not ready to become a vegetarian. well, you're not alone. more people are becoming flexitarians. you don't have to completely give up your meat and potatoes lifestyle, you can just be a vegetarian most of the time. >> it would be a piece of steak or a hamburger or meatloaf, a meat lasagna, sausage spaghetti, everything. >> reporter: for 44-year-old ray, a meal wasn't a meal unless it included a piece of meat. >> growing up in my family we had meat and potatoes thaxt ace just what we had. >> reporter: but after his doctor diagnosed him with high cholesterol and prescribed a daily medication, he says he realized his diet was probably sabotaging his health. so he met with registered dietitian judy kaplan who urged him to cut out the meat. >> i think he was especially motivated after he had seen the

doctor and he was upset his cholesterol was elevated. he didn't want to be on medicine. >> reporter: that's when he tried something new, what kaplan calls a flex diet where he would eat vegetarian on most days but could allow himself some meat occasionally. kaplan says more and more americans are adopting this flexitarian way of life. >> today people are broadening their idea of what's healthy, and what they can eat. so it's not just the old meat and potatoes. and the evidence is all over the grocery store. take a look at the growing number of meatless products you can buy, everything from veggie pepperoni, tofu dogs, you can get meatless barbecue, even smart bacon now. one study found that sales of these products have grown 21% in just the last two years. another survey by allrecipes.com found that more than one-third of their 1400 members said they ate less meat in 2011 than the year before. >> you don't need to eat meat at every meal. >> reporter: kaplan says

americans have a tendency to overconsume meat because of a longstanding belief it's the best source of protein and veggies and grains alone won't keep us full. but too much protein could be a bad idea. >> you don't need a ton of protein. you just need enough for tissue repair and body function. after that, it can draw too much calcium from the bones. so we really need to concentrate on the other food groups that build help. >> reporter: ray has been flexitarian for about a year now. he says the results have been pretty dramatic. his cholesterol dropped 40 points and he no longer needs to take medication. catch l kaplan says they were both excited. >> it's really about mindset. a person that wants to change has to begin to educate themselves. it's never been easier. >> reporter: so how much protein should you be getting? a lot of people need between 40 and 70 grax grams a day. you get 17 grams from a cup of

the sister to sister nonprofit invited senators and their staff to get heart smart. they took part in free cardiovascular screenings, stress-reducing activities and munched on healthy finger food, too. a new web site called smart for the heart was also unveiled. it allows users to communicate with fitness and dietarior experts and improve their health at no cost. now doug's in from the barbecue joint. >> yes! >> ribs, yes! i tell you, we had a nice valentine's day for the most part. >> it was great. >> it was actually sunny and lovely. >> i thought -- you know, the clouds came in early and then late in the day. got some real sunshine around lunchtime, a perfect day to get out there with your sweetheart or by yourself. a lot of people by themselves today. i don't know why. saw them out there earlier. >> good day to be alone with a book. >> out there right now, we do have clouds coming on in.

we do have some sprinkle activity out there, too. 50 degrees the current temperature outside right now with those clouds, winds out of the south at about 14 miles per hour. a nice afternoon, we are seeing just a few sprinkles from time to time but no need for an umbrella. it's not that kind of rain. 47 right now in martinsburg, 54 in culpeper, 49 toward pax river. as we move through the metro area, fairfax county, ft. bell four around 53, springfield, 51 and my friends in annapolis at 49. what are we seeing? this is a little storm system, the shower activity right now mostly around the washington area, just off to the east in through portions of maryland, columbia, maryland and portions of montgomery county. this is where you may need the umbrella, northern portions of anna rundell county, around annapolis, toward croften, maryland, prince george's county, few showers mostly of a light variety, sprinkle or two.

but you may see a heavier shower in that area so you may need the umbrella just for a little bitd. it will be that small purse umbrella we talk about so often. future weather forecast showing this storm system just completely dying out. by tomorrow, it will just be a memory. high pressure bringing plenty of sunshine tomorrow, a beautiful day for wednesday, a great day for a lunch outside. then the high pressure moves off and here comes thursday. another area of low pressure moves in. this one will have some rain with it, and i think most of the afternoon on thursday will be a little bit on the welt side. expect rain, expect to have the umbrellas out during most the day and afternoon on thursday. before that system moves on out of here and then we see some more sunshine during the day on friday. little breezy, it will feel kind of cool but still a nice day friday with high temperatures into the low 50s across the area. veronica johnson, by the way, made me put these hartss on here. i also did this for you, wendy. >> i don't see hearts. >> mild and breezy, 43 to 49 degrees.

a major wireless company is slowing down its downloads. and lots of senior citizens are missing out on money to help pay their bills. and one airline is letting consumers cash in unused gift

cards for frequent flier miles. >> we're going to start with the at&t. it's easier to say. and the data slowdown. the wireless phone company no longer offers new customers unlimited data plans but it still has some 17 million existing customers using it. a new policy says those customers are subject to what's being called throttling. that means slowing downloads by 99%. at & f says it throttles the heavy heaviest users in areas where the wireless network is congested. at&t stopped signing up new customers for unlimited data plans in 2010 and last year it warned it would start slowing speeds for people who consume the most data. there's new information out today that shows older adults are missing out on financial help for health care, food, and utility costs. the national council on aging

along with the national association of area agencies on aging released a report today that shows millions of americans are missing out on more than $20 billion in free and low-cost support. seniors can get help with everything from paying their heating bills, getting food assistance, to receiving financial assistance and help with health care and prescription drugs. the two groups have launched a national campaign to connect eligible americans with free and low-cost resources. you can find a link to more than 2,000 public and private programs at our web site nbcwashington.com. simply search "senior help". and finally, there's a new deal that's going to let consumers exchange unused gift cards for frequent flier miles. this week united, continental airlines launched what's called miles plus gift card exchange. it allows frequent flier members to convert unused gift cards from places like target or starbucks, home depot with a $25 balance into award miles.

now in from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 at 5." whitney houston's family is planning a private funeral for the singer. there will not be a public memorial at a newark, new jersey, sports arena after all.

now an invitation-oechbl service is scheduled for saturday at noon at the church where houston sang as a child. the chief medical examiner back on the stand today in the trial of the former uva lacrosse player charged with murder. he says yeardley love's blood alcohol level was high, not high enough to kill. another medical expert testified that love suffered severe blunt force trauma to her brain. and d.c. police are warning residents tonight of two upper northwest neighborhoods to be on alert in. last night there were three robberies in just a span of a few hours. all three happened in the tinley town and trendship heights areas near busy pedestrian intersections. police believe the robberies could be linked. now the latest on the weather from doug. >> right now a lot of cloud cover, yes, a couple of sprinkles and a heavier shower toward northern an rundell county. this storm continues to move northeast and most of the rain

moving through portions of maryland. we'll seal that continue off to the north and east. could be more sprinkles later this evening as well. so you may want to keep that umbrella handy, 'do though i don't think most of us will need it. i'll show you what you will need over the next couple of days and when that umbrella may be a necessity. that's coming up. >> thanks, doug. an eyewitness takes the stand in the murder trial of a man accused of killing an off-duty state trooper in 2010. but the suspect's lawyer is questioning whether her testimony can be trusted. darcy spencer is live in upper marlboro. darcy? >> reporter: wendy, this woman says she was at the applebee's restaurant the night wesley brown was killed, the trooper. she said she was in the parking lot with the gunman opened fire and she pointed to the defendant in the courtroom and said he was the one who was firing that gun. but the defense team went on the attack asking why she didn't pick him out in a photo lineup as the shooter and why she asked about getting reward money in exchange for her testimony. maryland state police troop err

wesley brown was gunned down while working security at applebee's in june of 2010. prosecutors say this man, soro williams pulled the trigger. he's now on trial for murder in prince george's county circuit court. oov karl peeples who was working security with trooper brown that night described how he and the trooper had thrown williams out of the restaurant after receiving a complaint. surveillance video showing the officers's escorting williams outside was shown in court. people said williams was intoxicated, argued with the officers and took a swing. but then williams left the restaurant. he said brown didn't want to arrest him. prosecutors say williams returned to the restaurant with a gun and shot trooper brown as the officer stepped outside to make a phone call. a childhood friend of williams, gene lucas, testified that she saw williams being escorted out of the restaurant that night but left before the gun fire erupted. the next day she received a phone call from williams,

wanting to know if she was okay because something had happened at applebee's. prosecutors say williams had an accomplice in the crime. after being removed from the restaurant, they say he went to the home of anthony milton who had borrowed williams' gun. mimten has pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. he's expected to testify against his friend williams. william brennan is one of williams' attorneys. he told the jury during opening statements that there is no evidence linking him to the killing, no dna. brennan says williams did not kill trooper brown. he tells news4, we agree that he got kicked out of applebee's, but that doesn't mean he committed murder. that trial is expected to continue for the rest of the week. sorrel williams faces life in prison if convicted on these charges. >> thank you, darcy. today house lawmakers in virginia approved two of the most restrictive anti-abortion

bills to be introduced in years. the so-called personhood bill sponsored by bob marshall declares a person's rights begin at conception. opponents argue the bill lays the ground work to outlaw abortion in virginia if the supreme court ever reverses roe v. wade. and a second bill that passed today requires a pregnant women to have an ultrasound before undergoing an abortion. democrats objected strenuously to both bills but they were outvoted by a republican super majority. well, in the midst of our troubling economy, we are here to tell you that a lot of people in our area a in the money. erica gonzalez has more on which northern virginia county is packing some serious wealth. >> reporter: a country reeling from a recession? you'd never know it by the looks of loudoun county, the richest county in the nation according to 2010 census data analyzed by main street.com. >> well, when the world comes,

they don't land in washington, d.c., they land in loudoun county. >> reporter: loudoun county chairman scott york says nearby dulles airport and a mix of stellar schools, government agencies not to mention a booming high-tech community make loudoun county an enticing place to live and work. >> loudoun county actually has over 50% of the world's internet traffic coming through this jurisdiction. >> reporter: how big are the bragging rights in loudoun county? the average household income is nearly $120,000. from 2009 to 2010, the national average household income decreased more than 2%. however, here in loudoun county that's still $70,000 more than the national average. >> it's a massive difference. i can't believe how far money will go in other parts of the country. >> reporter: how do you think loudoun county has stacked up with other counties across the country during the recession? >> we've hung in there. yeah. loudoun county is the place to be. >> reporter: "forbes" magazine did a similar study two years ago and even then loudoun county

local schools leading the pack, georgetown university and the university of virginia ranked highest on huffington post's 2012 preppy barometer. eight schools were chosen based largely on students' style. georgetown got nods for top collars and a beau tie. one of uva's unofficial mottos is guys in ties, girls in pearls. boston college, wheaton and cornell rounded out the top five preppiest colleges. ooh, the birds. flashback, all that noise is just one of the problems. some kro crows are causing in a pennsylvania neighborhood. cell phone video captured thousands of black birds hovering over some homes south of pittsburgh. they left quite a mess on cars. plus, residents say the crows keep them up at night. one neighbor built a scarecrow to keep the birds away but that

>> well, he brings a lot of energy, you know? very emotional, just like me. we kind of like go together, like hand in hand, you know. he's a great pass out there on the perimeter. he's a great guy to get the ball in to to score on the interior. he has the number one shooting percentage in the conference so we always try too get him the ball. and he just brings a lot. his energy and effort on defense, you know, blocking shots and he just brings that overall energy that we need for our team to make us go. >> number one shooting percentage in the conference, and you have a guy here who could be the player of the year in the conference. as a team, you guys also have a very good shooting percentage, over 45%. what is it about ryan that really makes him go? >> well, really, you just can't guard him. you don't know what he's going to do. he can shoot the jumper, taking you down low, falling on the ground, up and under, great scorer, great leader. like you said, we both bring energy. we just feed off each other. great having a one-two duo down low. you can't really double the post

with two good playost players. >> you had a great run with coach l. what has it been like with that change, to have coach hewitt come in? >> coach hewitt didn't miss a beat. he did a great job, got us running with his system. oufr record is still very strong. we all love him and we're win winning still, most importantly. not like he has a problem holding his job. it's been a smooth transition. coach l is very good and coach hewitt is doing a great job. >> at the patriots center you've only lost once this season, 13-1 on your home hardwood. what is it about this place that makes it so special to play? >> the fans. ed fans come in and they bring energy, you know. it's electric in here. you know, this is our student section right here, and when this thing gets packed and everybody's in here yelling and screaming, you know, gives us the energy we need.

tv, gas cost $1.13 a gallon, and there were 443 murders in the city of washington. one of the victims? chet hunter matthews. his family says they were told he was the first person murdered at the jefferson memorial. 27-year-old chet matthews, he was an army reservist, a postal employee, a licensed barber, and the father of three boys. memorial day 1992 he was at his parents' house in tacoma park. there was a picnic and a party. they say he left about 10:00 p.m. to meet a young lady. that's the last his family saw him alive. chet hunter matthews, killed here. a shotgun blast to the chest. now, after 19 years, at superior

court today a man officially charged in that case of murder. lamont desean terry arrested last month in south carolina brought here today to face a judge. according to court documents, the motive? robbery. terry identified as the gunman. they say he shot chet matthews after he made him kneel down in the grass. in court today, a letter presented by the family of chet hunter matthews. it says, in part, when he was robbed and killed, all of us who loved him so much were also victimized. you did not just rob him but you also robbed each and every one of us. we want and deserve justice, too. no more running for lamont terry. he's been held without bond pending further court action in the case. live at the jefferson memorial, i'm pat collins, news4. that does it for "news4 at
