additional dollars per paycheck has meant to them, president obama says he sees progress in getting congress to go along with the payroll tax cut that $40 represents. but -- >> until you see me sign this thing, you've got to keep on speaking up. until you see that photograph of me signing it at my desk. >> reporter: like he did in december when extension of the tax cut and unemployment benefits were first debated. the president asked that pressure be put on congress through phone calls, e-mails and tweets. >> just pass this middle class tax cut, pass the extension of unemployment insurance, do it before it's too late, and i will sign it right away. >> reporter: house gop leaders have reversed themselves, agreeing to the tax cut extension and letting the $100 billion cost be added to the debt, but still want the unemployment benefits covered by spending cuts elsewhere. which is what some in the senate want. >> i'm comfortable with an extension of it, but i really think the extension should be

offset. so let's see what the house actually sends over, but i have reservations. >> reporter: treasury secretary tim geithner carried to congress tuesday the administration's push to extend both. >> if congress fails to act, 160 million americans will immediately pay more in payroll taxes and 5 million people looking for work will lose or be denied unemployment insurance benefits. >> reporter: congress is in recess all next week, leaving only two days the following week to act before extension of the tax cut and the unemployment benefits expire. chris clackum, nbc news. of. >> the chief medical examiner was back on the stand today in the trial of the former university of virginia lacrosse player who's been charged with murder. the medical examiner testified that the victim yeardley love was intoxicated the night she died, but he said it wasn't enough to kill her. julie carey at the courthouse in

charlottesville with more. julie? >> reporter: early on in this case we learned that the autopsy showed yeardley love died of blunt force trauma today prosecutors provided many more details to try to make their case that yeardley love was murdered. yeardley love's death came from blunt force injury to the head. that's a conclusion of assistant state medical examiner dr. william gormley, his findings backed up by separate evaluations by two brain experts. gormley said the trauma led to cardiac arrythmia. also revealed were toxicology results on love. the defense had requested a special test for amphetamines because love had a prescription for adderall. but he testified the level was therapeut therapeutic. as for love's blood alcohol level of 0.14, gormley testified, it's certainly not consistent with causing death. george huguely's attorneys didn't question gormley, but his conclusions contradict the

defense theory that an intoxicated love facing facedown on her pillow died of asphyxia. prosecutors say it baz a drunk and angry hughley who killed love, first kick being in her door, shaking her and hitting her head against the wall. earlier in the wall, jurors got a lesson on brain injury as two pathologists were questioned who added reports to the autopsy. christine fuller used a model of a skull and brain to describe the contusions and hemorrhages she found in love's brain. fuller says they were the type of injuries created by shearing force, the brain bumping against the skull or a torque-like force. prosecutor chapman is, could it come from a fall? dr. fuller, yes. prosecutor chapman, could it come from a fall? dr. fuller, potentially but from a height not just a ground level fall. both brain doctors testified the injury near love's brain stem likely caused cardiac aregion mia that led to cardiac pull

know marry failure, a slow death that could have taken two hours or more. forensic specialists are on the stand now. there's been a lot of speculation regarding a beer can collected as evidence. they were not able to obtain a discernible fingerprint from that. the prosecution says it will finish its case sometime tomorrow. reporting live from charlottesville, news4. trial is now under way for five men accused in one of our city's most notorious crimes. jury selection began today in what's called the southeast mass shooting. nine people shot in a drive-by on south capital street in march of 2010. four of the victims died. six others were injured if a series of related violent attacks within eight days of each other. each person charged in the crime spree is facing the possibility of a life in prison without the possibility of parole. a virginia state trooper is being held without bond on four sex charges.

29-year-old christopher carson was taken into custody yesterday, charges including aggravated sexual battery, indecent liberties with a child, two counts of distributing porn to a juvenile. investigators say two of the charges are on incidents that happened more than ten years ago. carson joined the police force six years ago. he's on administrative leave during the investigation. whitney houston's family does not want a public memorial for her. a wake at a new jersey sports arena for thousands of fans will not take place. instead, the family is opting for a private funeral. as mark barger reports, the church has special meaning to houston. ♪ >> reporter: the same newark, new jersey, church where whitney houston sang as a child will now be the scene of her funeral saturday. houston's family chose new hope baptist church for the private invitation-only event. the church is already home to a makeshift memorial by mourners, but houston's family has

los angeles, the chinese vp will travel to musk ateen, iowa, a town he first visited in 1985 as part of a cultural exchange. on capitol hill, brian moore, news4. today israel accused iran of waging a covert campaign of state terror. the violence began yesterday in india when the wife of an israeli diplomat was injured in a car bomb similar to those that have targeted iranian nuclear scientists. israeli officials say a second bomb was found under an israeli embassy car in the nation of georgia. in thailand today, a cache of explosives in a house in bangkok ignited apparently by accident and three iranian citizens immediately fled. one threw a grenade at police but bounced back at him and exploded, seriously injuring him. a second iranian man was arrested at the airport. israeli officials say both men have confessed their targets were israeli interest. the third man remains at large. today an israeli public safety official says israel

>> i'm going to go to this camera to talk about what's going on weatherwise. out there right now, looking good. if it was about 15 degrees cooler, wendy, i would definitely agree with you. out there font, though, not too bad as far as temperatures are concerned, into the upper 40s right now, after a high today of 56 degrees. today the 11th day this month with temperatures above average. it has simply been amazing how warm we have been so far this winter. we just had our coolest stretch so far this month coming out of those during the day today, plenty of sunshine, little earlier, now we're dealing with cloud cover, a temperature of 49 with winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour. current temperatures around the region, 46 in gaithersburg, 48 in baltimore, 45 right now in marg r martinsburg, culpeper at 50 degrees. we'll go into the metro region and show you how things are, prince george's county 50, camp springs, huntingtown, around 49, back toward montgomery county, rockville at 49 and rusten

toward fairfax county at 49. we do have a couple of showers out there, all east of the mountains for the most part. but look at the colder temperatures, 39 in pittsburgh, 36 in columbus, ohio. they saw plenty of cloud cover here, but we were able to get a little bit on the warmer side. that's kind of been the way it is, colder air to the west of the mountains, warmer air along the piedmont and out toward the chesapeake bay. here's the storm 4 radar showing where the showers are right now, coming through mostly into southern maryland here. still a few more back through west virginia. these are very light showers trying to make their way over. we could still see a few sprinkles for the rest of us, but right now most of us are on the dry side. it's just portions of maryland seeing that rain through howard county anne arundel county, down northern calvert. all of this on the light side, most of the rest of us in northern virginia on the dry side. that's how it will remain. the area of low pressure bringing the little bit of moisture is out of here and really fading away. high pressure moves in overnight tonight and into the day tomorrow, plenty of sunshine, a

beautiful wednesday. and then we'll watch another storm system moves in, this one coming in from the west where they do have winter storm warnings well to the west. i'm talking about new mexico here. this one moving in quickly, it will bring plenty of rainfall. i think about a quarter inch, maybe a third of inch of rain for some of us during the day thursday. you'll need the umbrellas for sure thursday but then can put them away once again as the storm quickly moves out. we're talking about plenty of sunshine to end the week on friday. rather breezy conditions, high temperatures in the low 50s again. this evening, mostly cloudy, spring esprinkles and breezy, mild. we were seeing guchting winds earlier but they're calming down now. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy, not too cold, 31 to 38 degrees, sunrise tomorrow at seven:00 a.m. on thursday, it will be before the 7:00 hour to the 6:00 hour. tomorrow, mostly sunny, continued mild, a nice afternoon, 52 to about 57 degrees with those winds out of

>> announcer: and now from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 at 6." the payroll tax cut expiring at the end of the month. time's running out. president obama asking average americans, turn up the pressure on congress for an extension at the white house today. he asked people to call, e-mail, tweet their represent ofs and not stop until the bill is on his desk. the chief medical examiner was back on the stand today at the trial of the former uva lacrosse player who's been charged with murder. the examiner testified that yeardley love's blood alcohol level was high but not high enough to kill her. another medical expert testified that love suffered severe blunt force trauma to her brain. prosecutors are trying to prove that george huguely beat love to death during a jealous rage in may of 2010. there will not be a public memorial for whitney houston.

her family announced a private funeral, an invitation-only service scheduled for saturday at noon at a newark, new jersey, church. houston sang there as a child. fans have been placing flowers at the church for the last several days in their own makeshift memorial. here's doug with the forecast. >> the recast today, valentine's day, ended up pretty good out there, especially for lunchtime. now if you're getting ready to go out to dinner, it looks like most of us are going to remain on the dry side. a few showers, though. you may want to take the umbrella if you're in portions of southern mare meyer where we're seeing the most activity, also back towards portion west virginia and western portions of virginia along i-81. zooming into southern maryland, you see the rain coming right on down route 50 and toward 301, around croften toward the green belt area and toward buoy. watch out around vansville, also some seeing some shower activity remaintion down around northern calvert county, around the dunkirk area and sutherland and also north beach.

most the showers are on the light side, are going to continue to be fairly light, but they may give you a couple of sprinkles making your way out and about if you are heading out to dinner. just to let you know, once again, you may need to carry that small umbrella as you make your way out. and you're going to need the bigger umbrella. i'll show you when in my forecast. thanks, doug. our top story at 6:30, she witnessed a murder, the shooting death of an off-duty state trooper who was working security at a restaurant in prince george's county. >> today that witness testified about what she saw, but her testimony came under question. darcy spencer with a report from upper marlboro. >> reporter: a woman who was at the applebee's restaurant in forestville when trooper wisly brown was shot to death identified this man, sorel williams as the gunman. june springfellow said she saw him firing multiple shots. but the defense shot holes in her testimony.

williams is on trial in a murder charge accused of killing the trooper in june of 2010. officer karl peeples who was working security with trooper brown that night described how he and the trooper had thrown williams out of the restaurant after receiving a complaint. surveillance video showing the officers escorting williams outside was shown in court. williams took a swing at the officers but left the restaurant. he says brown didn't want to arrest him. prosecutors say williams returned to of the restaurant with a gun and shot trooper brown as the officer stepped outside to make a phone call. prosecutors say williams had an accomplice. after being removed from the reflt raunlt, he went to the home of anthony milton who had borrowed williams' gun. williams got the gun from milton and used it to shoot the trooper. milton has pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. he's expected to testify against his friend ssorell williams.

one of williams' attorneys said during opening statements there is no evidence linking him to the killing, no dna. attorney brennan says williams did not kill trooper 4. he tells news4, we agree he got kicked out of applebee's but that doesn't mean he committed murder. the trial is expected to last the rest of the week. sorel williams faces life in prison if he's convicted. in upper marlboro, darcy spencer, news4. >> testimony resumes tomorrow morning in the prince george's county sish yy circuit court. a case that's been cold for almost 20 years in the district now solved. it happened on memorial day 1992. chet hunter matthews left his parents' home in tacoma park to meet a woman at the jefferson memorial. police say there was a robbery. matthews was forced to fleel on the ground and then he was shot and killed. last month, lamont desean terry was arrested in south carolina, charged with that murder. he's now faced a judge in a d.c. courtroom today and was ordered

held without bond. police are warning people who live in upper northwest d.c. to be on alert. there's been a string of recent robberies up there. last night there were three in just the span of a few hours in the areas of tinley town and friendship heights. in the fist case, three robbers pufrnled their victim. in the other two, police say the suspects wore masks. at least one of them had a gun. ward 3 council woman mary chai who represents the area says she's concerned if there are not arrests soon, the robberies could become even more violent. virginia transportation officials met with residents and commuters today. they want public input on the future of traffic solutions. the study is called supernova transit. it's looking at current issues facing commuters, including drivers who come from west virginia and maryland and those who are heading into the zriblgt. officials are looking at expected demand through 2040 and

>> announcer: you're watching "news4 at 6." two occupy d.c. protestors face charges tonight after a small but defiant protest ended with their arrest. this was late last night when the protestors set up tents on a sidewalk outside merrill lynch in the 1100 block of 15th street northwest. at first, officers told the protestors to leave. when the group wouldn't budge, officers pulled them out of their tents and arrested them. on this valentine's day, the controversy over carrying guns in public came to a head at several coffee shop locations in northern virginia. chris gordon visited the

starbucks store in sterling as both sides of a gun debate. >> reporter: these gun advocates are armed and spending the day buying coffee at this starbucks in sterling, virginia. ed levine called on gun owners around the country to support starbucks on valentine's day after some gun opponents had called for a boycott because starbucks allows customers to open-carry handguns in states like virginia where it's legal. >> i've got a kim better 1911 a 1911 .45 on my hip had. i've got an i love guns and coffee button and shirt and i've got a guns saves lives sticker. >> reporter: he's paying for coffee with $2 bills symbolic of the second amendment, the right to bear arms. but the grade di campaign to prevechbt gun violence has long opposed the policy of allowing guns in stores. >> two years ago we delivered about 40,000 petitions to the starbucks headquarters in

as the public debate around this issue continues, we encourage customers and advocacy groups from both sides to share their input with their public officials. in sterling, virginia, chris gordon, news4. in the race for the white house, three new national polls are suggesting that rick santorum and mitt romney are now in a virtual tie for the lead in the republican field. a pew research center poll shows 30% of republican and republican-leaning voters favor santorum while 28% prefer romney. a "new york times"/cbs poll gives santorum 30% to romney's 27%. but a gallup center daily poll gives romney 32 to santorum's 30. all three polls are close enough to be considered a statistical tie. checking on the forecast. >> couple of light showers into portions of the region. we could see a few more this evening, but then an even bigger storm is on the horizon. a storm out there that may actually hold some snow.
