several performed during whitney houston's funeral this weekend. >> we'll get to more on that story but first up our eyes are on the skies this afternoon. rain tonight and can you stand it? snow for the weekend. >> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is in the storm center with more. >> it looks like winter has not thrown in the towel just yet. you mentioned the showers we had today. we've had a dismal, gray day throughout with light rain falling and the temperature at 47 degrees. not too bad. we have a calm wind. when that rain ends which will be not too many hours from now, i think we'll see fog forming. you can see the back line, back edge of the rain. frederick, leesburg, down toward warranton. it is moving out of here. front royal now some of the lingering showers. we'll have this probably until we get to about 7:00 p.m. or so. our temperatures right now between 43 and 49 degrees.

43 in montgomery county. olney, ashton, germantown and the neighborhoods around damascus, meanwhile 45 degrees around manassas and 49 currently in warranton. all right. here is a look at your good night forecast. the showers again ending around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 or so. 46 the temperature. by the time we get to 11:00 p.m., 44. we'll be clearing some but with a very calm wind i think we'll see quite a bit of fog until the wind picks up, which is likely to be early tomorrow morning. so some foggy areas, keep that in mind if you have got travels for the evening and early part of the night. at 5:46, your fast forecast. showers end this evening. two days of what looks like rather quiet weather but in a couple minutes the storm system, coastal storm system. i'll tell you what it looks like right now. there's a lot of uncertainty with the storm system that is still getting its act together.

a lot of uncertainty but coming up in a couple minutes i'll tell you which areas we think may be impacted more on sunday. maybe your neighborhood. back to you. >> all right. thank you. we know it's invitation only but new details were released today about whitney houston's private funeral on saturday. >> close to a dozen celebrities are scheduled to speak or perform. we'll go live to newark, new jersey this afternoon where funeral preparations are under way. mark? >> reporter: good evening. yes, it's been a damp, dreary day here in newark, new jersey but it hasn't discouraged whitney houston fans from passing by the church behind me to pay their respects. as the funeral draws closer, the police have cordoned off, blocked off vehicular traffic for the street in front of the church. that as preparations for the saturday funeral continue. the colorful array of balloons, flowers, and signs continues to grow outside of newark's new hope baptist church. the makeshift memorial a means for mourners to pay respects to

whitney houston in advance of the saturday funeral. >> i love her. >> reporter: authorities are discouraging the same fans from getting close to the church during the service. >> i would advise the public there is going to be nothing to see here at the church. the best thing to do would be stay home and watch the service on television. >> reporter: police will cordon off a roughly two-block area around the church saturday. actor kevin kostner houston's costar in the 1993 film "the body guard" is said to be one of the celebrities invited to join houston's family for the service. her god mother aretha franklin will be among those performing as well as stevie wonder. >> we're going to celebrate her life to the standard she deserves and this is a church and we'll have the celebration. >> a full page tribute appeared in this morning's "los angeles times" purchased by the michael jackson estate. new jersey governor chris christie is calling to fly flags at half staff saturday in houston's honor and has drawn criticism. >> i think she is a wonderful singer. this is a tragedy.

she was not in public service. i don't think it's appropriate. >> reporter: houston's admitted drug use has prompted critical calls to christie's office but he defends the decision. >> her accomplishments in this life were a great source of pride for people in this state and i think she is entitled to have that recognition. >> reporter: pride evidence from houston's fans. also this evening the newark star ledger is quoting an unnamed city official as saying jay-z, beyonce, oprah winfrey, bill cosby, and elton john are among the invited guests expected to attend whitney houston's funeral saturday. >> big names, mark. what about her ex, bobby brown? has he been in town there? might we see him on saturday? >> reporter: that's up in the air. indications are the family does not want bobby brown anywhere close to the funeral. he is currently on tour with new edition. they have a date tonight in upper marlboro and also tomorrow night in greensboro and actually

sunday they are due to perform here in newark but we can't take that as any necessary sign that he is going to be here on saturday. >> all right. thank you, mark. back close to home today the george huguely murder trial in charlottesville did not continue as planned today. it was postponed until tomorrow because one of his defense attorneys is sick. huguely of course is the former uva la crosse player accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend yardley love. when the trial resumes the defense will continue with more testimony to challenge the murder charges against him. well, if we've learned anything during the 112th congress it is a deal isn't done until the final votes have been counted. but it looks like the payroll tax cut extension is moving toward a vote. democrats are crowing. republicans are grousing. but the bipartisan agreement appears to be holding. steve handelsman has the latest now from capitol hill. >> we have reached an agreement. >> reporter: house republican david camp and senate democrat max bachus made the final deal

in the wee hours this morning. >> this is very important for a lot of people, 160 million americans maintaining the federal tax cut. >> federal workers do not have to pay more toward pensions as republicans demanded. the deal extends the 2% cut in payroll taxes through 2012 to keep the rate at 4.2%. it renews $300 a week extended jobless benefits for at least 63 weeks, down from 93 weeks. and it protects doctors from cuts in medicare reimbursements. house democratic leader nancy pelosi gave the credit to president obama. >> good morning. >> reporter: she said he created the drum beat that forced republicans to make the deal. >> remember, public sentiment is everything and the public overwhelmingly supported a payroll tax cut for 160 million americans. >> reporter: republicans had blinked. they backed off their demand for

spending cuts and they're in no mood to credit barack obama. >> this is an economic relief package because the president's policies have not only failed. they've actually made the economy worse. >> reporter: but the deal got signed this afternoon. both sides were smiling even though no senate republicans have yet signed on. the deal, most agree, is done. a bipartisan deal. >> it works. teamwork. >> reporter: and formal approval. the house and senate votes could come as soon as tomorrow. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. stocks rallied today thanks to several positive economic reports. unemployment claims dropped to their lowest level in nearly four years and new home construction rose more than expected, all major averages are on pace to post weekly gains. the dow and nasdaq looked to finish at multi-year highs. at last check the dow was up 121 points. the nasdaq was up 43 points and the s&p 500 up 14 points today.

>> there could be another kennedy in congress next year. this morning joe kennedy iii released an online video launching his campaign for barney frank's congressional seat in massachusetts. kennedy is the son of former congressman joseph kennedy and a grandson of the late robert f. kennedy. he recently moved from cambridge to the boston suburb of brookline. part of the state's newly redrawn forth district. the family has deep ties to brook line. it's the birth place of joe kennedy's great uncle, the late president john f. kennedy. there has not been a kennedy in congress since senator ted kennedy died in 2009. some scary moments at the site of the world trade center this morning after a crane dropped its load of metal beams. it happened inside the construction zone at 4 world trade center. earlier reports indicate the crane was moving the beams when a cable snapped. the metal beams came down on to a construction vehicle. luckily, no one was inside the vehicle at the time. the new york fire department says they evaluated one person

at the scene but there were no serious injuries. the nigerian man who tried to blow up a flight bound for detroit with explosives in his underwear will spend the rest of his life behind bars without a chance for parole. today a federal judge refused to set aside a law that requires a life sentence for the attempted terrorist act. omar abdul mutalab tried to bring down the northwest flight on christmas, 2009. he was badly burned but unsuccessful in doing any other harm. his lawyer argued a life sentence was unconstitutional because there was no death or serious injuries to passengers. officials in thailand say three iranians involved in a bungled plot in bangkok were planning to target israeli diplomats. this comes after israel accused iran of being involved in attacks that targeted diplomats in india and the former soviet republic of georgia earlier this week. stephanie gosk has the latest

now from tel aviv. >> reporter: thai officials confirmed for the first time today that three iranian men involved in a bungled plot in bangkok were actually looking to target israeli diplomats. israeli officials have already accused tehran of orchestrating two other attacks this week in india and georgia against its diplomats. today israeli leaders responded to the news out of iran that it has made significant developments in its nuclear program. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said that sanctions although good clearly are not working and his defense minister ehud barak said this was all a stunt on iran's behalf to try to convince the world they had passed the point of no return with their nuclear program. >> i think the sanctions should be ratcheted up and made even more urgent. i think for the first time we see certain signs of dissension but they may not suffice. >> reporter: in iran they claim they have developed a new

generation of centrifuge to enrich uraniuim. now that country can produce its own fuel rods. in an interesting twist, today iran says it is now ready to return to the negotiating table over its nuclear program after halting the talks over a year ago. stephanie gosk, nbc news, tel aviv. a frontier airlines pilot was grounded in omaha today. law enforcement officials say he may have been drunk. the pilot never made it on to the plane. airline officials say police were called when the pilot aroused suspicions before even making it through security. flight 1894 to milwaukee was supposed to leave at 6:00 this morning but passengers had to cool their jets in the terminal for about two hours while a substitute pilot was rounded up. federal aviation officials say they are looking into this matter. we're just getting started on news 4 here at 4:00. a war of words between singers. why chris brown is so fired up about his grammy victory.

a food network star has reportedly been fired over a recipe copying scandal. >> the new york post reports the network canceled a show called "dessert first with ann thornton" after just two seasons. the show's former host is suspected of copying other chef's recipes whose recipes may have been plagiarized include martha stewart and ena garden. thornton released a statement in her defense saying, quote, i get inspiration from all my heroes. you take what you learn from them and your riff on that. the names don't get any bigger. meryl streep and julia roberts are teaming up.

streep will play the pill-popping mom and 44-year-old roberts will play her complicated adult daughter in the movie version. currently roberts plays the queen in next year's "mirror mirror" movie. streep is still collecting awards for "the iron lady." production is set to begin this fall. well, the dave matthews band makes a virginia date. great news for fans of adele today. and chris brown takes some heat over his performance on sunday. >> it's time for hollywood headlines. joining us now georgia alfredes a cohost of the morning show week days wkos 93.9. so, chris brown taking flack about performing more than once at the grammys. >> yes. some of the celebrities, some of the stars from modern family came out and said what, have we forgiven him yet? he is sitting back.

the illinois shopping center featured in the classic blues brothers film is now just a pile of rubble. take a look. crews are in the process of tearing down the mall. in this clip from the movie you can see dan akroyd, john belushi leading police on a high speed chase through the inside sending shoppers into a frenzy. well, the dixie square mall opened in 1966, closed in '79 shortly after the movie's release. it was condemned for structural instability and asbestos concerns. >> all those cars running. we've got some snow coming. >> you can't drive like that with snow on the ground. >> no you can't. >> we were talking a little bit during the break. you were saying what are we going to get around here? not talking amounts today but i will say i think there is a 60% chance that some neighborhoods in our viewing area will be doing a little shoveling on sunday. >> shoveling. wow. no scraping. >> still a lot of uncertainty. still talking about a couple

different tracks. it's looking a little more favorable for us. it's presidents' day weekend. 47 degrees. calm wind. rain leaving the area so probably some fog forming through the area. taking a look at the rain out of this weather system. not a lot at all. only about between 0.1 of rain to the north to 0.25 inch. leesburg .02. that big push of rain heading out of here. the areas of dark green where it's still coming down. areas of st. mary's, culvert county. down to the south. but all moving out of here. calvert beach, too, getting a good soaking right now. out of here with that weather front. by the time we get to early tomorrow morning i think we'll see a clearing sky thanks in part also to some wind, northwest winds helping to clear us out. talking about breezy conditions. a lot of sunshine back to the

area tomorrow. could get wind gusts even late morning up to 25 miles per hour. here is a snap shot of saturday afternoon. there it is. 5:00. partly sunny skies with moisture gathering down to the south with that next storm system. talked about it yesterday. big area of low pressure. down around the southwest. it's going to reorganize tomorrow, our upcoming nor'easter for the weekend reorganizing down around the gulf of mexico. so here is the story for sunday. sunday nor'easter. we'll probably start with rain during the afternoon. the areas in white, that's the snow. probably to the north and west. our area of low pressure, storm system down around south carolina. north carolina. then as it makes its move east and northeastward the cold air rushes in on us. and i do think that there is a pretty good chance we'll end as snow. big question is, of course, how much are we going to get around here? it depends on how many hours of moisture do we have left with that air that's cold enough? not talking about today but we'll probably have a better

handle on talking snowfall amounts sometime late tomorrow. lingering showers with fog forming. tomorrow morning 35-39. again, it's going to be breezy so you'll probably need the coat for tomorrow morning. and gusty conditions for tomorrow afternoon. 50 to 53 degrees. that doesn't sound at all like winter, right? well as i said, winter is not done with us. saturday we're okay. get all those outdoor things done. your running around on saturday. then sunday 38 the high with falling temperatures throughout the day. falling temperatures, that cold air comes in. again, how many hours of snow o potential do we have? so coming up -- >> got to get cold so it'll stick. >> coming up in a couple minutes we'll talk about which areas will have the highest impact. >> okay. >> we'll check back then. we want to know. thanks. still to come on news 4 at

a 911 dispatcher helped a father deliver his own baby on the side of an oregon highway. >> the special delivery took place just two exits shy of the hospital. nbc's abby gibbs shares the family's story. >> 911 what is your emergency? >> my wife just delivered a baby on 205. >> she was eight days early. >> to the hospital five exits away. >> this is noah 6 pounds 14 ounces. >> reporter: boy oh, boy was he excited to be born. >> we started to have the contractions about 3:00 about

3:00 yesterday morning. we just thought it was false labor. >> by 8:45 that morning -- >> they kept getting worse and worse. we were heading to the hospital. we were on the freeway and i was trying so hard to wait and my water broke. >> that's when i started to be concerned that i may be delivering this baby in the car. >> i couldn't sit down. i was like holding myself up in the car. >> i wanted to cover my face, yeah. >> we were actually on 84 when i started pushing. >> get a little bit further, she says i can maybe feel the head. >> in my career probably over 500. >> any in a car before now? >> no. >> reporter: that's alina palmer the family midwife who had been following the couple on the freeway. she pulled over just before 9:30 right after the sandy exit on i-205. >> probably from the time the baby was delivered about three minutes. >> reporter: they called 911 just to be safe. >> okay. nobody is having any major issues? >> no, no.

we seem to -- everyone seems to be okay. >> all right. >> reporter: it couldn't have come on a more special day. >> it is just so fitting that on valentine's day when you're supposed to demonstrate your love the most you have your baby born. >> exciting. that was nbc's abby gibbs reporting. talk about some edible irony here. the maker of snickers is putting its products on a diet. mars announced it will stop selling chocolate bars and other candies with more than 250 calories by the end of this year. the mclean based company wants to improve the nutritional value of its treats and promote, quote, responsible snacking. the change will affect the brands mars makes like snickers, twix and m & ms. a spokesman tells us the move will not affect the quality of the products. the candy maker also announced plans to reduce sodium levels 25% by 2015.

wow. diet m & ms. >> i know. can you imagine? >> just wrong. >> i can eat a lot of them. i tell you that. well, it's time to take a look now at the results of another healing hearts makeover. we love these things. >> i'm glad you do. two days ago on news 4 midday a group of wives and relatives with wounded warriors and marines being treated at hospitals around the washington area came to visit us and we gave them flowers and gift bags. it was a surprise to the women for valentine's day, a show of appreciation for their involvement in the care and recovery of their wounded warriors. the gifts included complete head-to-toe makeovers provided for promotional consideration by neiman marcus, pr at partner salon, and bobby brown cosmetics. susan was one of the three makeover winners. our cameras followed as she got a new hair style, got her makeup done, and picked out a new outfit. here is susan's before look and she returned to our studio this morning for the big reveal. and now the results. here she is.

we're talking weather because we've got change coming. >> we're talking snow. the rain is moving out but for sunday that's the time period where we can shall be impacted you remember the fine, dry snow saturday. >> fast. >> this is going to be kind of a wet, sloppy snow sunday. we're in the 40s now. 46 at college park. 47 degrees right at anacostia. bladensburg and port washington also at 45 degrees. you folks in fairfax, 44. reston and merrifield right now. so during the overnight we'll get some fog forming because our winds are pretty calm. the rain is moving out. still some moisture left in the atmosphere. by tomorrow morning, though, that fog is gone because of the wind. winds will be picking up out of the northwest. drying us out with some gusts probably even early tomorrow morning around 20 miles per hour. we'll start between 35 and about 39 degrees. there is your 7:00 a.m. temperature with the sun due to arrive tomorrow at 6:57. a lot of sunshine tomorrow. we'll take it up to 56.

i'm on the runway of the rebecca taylor show for fall, 2012. now, before the show got started i actually had a chance to speak with her back stage about her selection. let's take a look. >> this collection for fall, it feels very personal to me. it's about clothes i really want to wear. i know it should always be the case. this year it's like i'm every single piece i just wanted to be like that is the perfect item i want to wear and everybody in my office. we're really excited. >> reporter: is there a girl you envision when you're designing? what is in your head? >> she's just us, you know? just like modern, feminine. it's really, my catch phrase is modern femininity. it's true. we all want to feel modern and feminine. and it feels sort of darkly poetic a little bit. >> okay. >> a little darkly romantic. >> how do you keep it fresh? >> i'm very prolific and we can just, you know, we do two collections a year and ship five

a virginia man has grand plans to build an ice rink in his back yard but mother nature had other plans. the man is from franklin county in southwestern virginia. he bought this 30-foot ice rink

complete with netting and lighting so that his son could play hockey. he started building it back in july. it even has a surround sound system. but this year's warm weather turned the rink into a big watery puddle. >> that's a swimming pool. comedy central will air re-runs of the hit show "the colbert show" for the rest of this week. sources close to the show say it is because the host is dealing with a family emergency. all the network is saying is that it will air repeats due to unforeseen circumstances. tapings could resume as soon as next week. and still ahead on news 4, more fallout from the huge drug bust on college campus. stay with us.

a major university is still reeling today after the arrests of 18 people in a drug bust. some of the students were football players for texas christian university in ft. worth, texas. nbc's scott gordon has more on suspects bonding out and how the campus was rocked. >> reporter: one by one the tcu students arrested in the drug roundup are bonding out of jail after spending the day behind bars. that's now former tcu football linebacker tanner brock, a standout many believe had a future in the nfl. >> excuse us. >> reporter: he held his shirt over his head as he hustled into

a waiting pickup and drove off. an nbc 5 camera was there as dozens of police officers descended on tcu's campus in an early morning sweep rounding up students all on charges of dealing drugs. marijuana, lsd, xanax, cocaine, and ecstasy. officers also recovered at least one gun. >> this investigation began six months ago. after receiving complaints from students, staff, parents, and the ft. worth community. >> reporter: from november to february police say an undercover officer made dozens of buys on campus and near campus including this kroger's parking lot where police say defensive tackle david yendry sold marijuana several times. police say one student was a member of a fraternity but administrators say there is no reason to believe other members knew what was going on. >> these are hand-to-hand transactions and happened on and off campus. they may be in the room

a bit. first up the weather. we've seen rain all across our area for much of the day. now, folks, it looks like some of us could see some flakes this weekend. >> doug kammerer joins us in the storm center. how is it looking? >> a lot of people getting excited about what's going to happen later on this weekend. we're talking about during the day on sunday. first we have some rain out there right now with temperatures at 46 degrees. at least it's been a mild rain. winds out of the south-southwest at about 6 miles per hour right now and temperatures across the region all in the 40s. 43 right now in leesburg. 45 in manassas. down to the south in fredericksburg coming in with a temperature there of 47 degrees. once again, mild this afternoon. temperatures right around average for this time of the year. we're look forgue the rain continuing to move out. you can see a lot of it coming through the area, a quarter to half inch but the back edge along i-95 and it will continue to move on out to the east. then we turn our attention way down to the south and west. we're going all the way down to phoenix, arizona. that's where our next storm system is right no
