breaking news still unfolding. the fbi has arrested 29-year-old amin el kalifi, who thought it was going to carry out a bombing attack in the capital. he was arrested friday in an fbi sting operation near the u.s. capital, while planning to detonate what police said he thought were live explosives. it had inert material that was not explosive. he was dealing with fbi undercover operatives all along, for months in fact. >> investigators say the man wanted to set off a bomb near the visitor's center. officials say he had been under close observation for months and the public was in no real danger. right now agents are raiding his home in alexandria. >> jane, you were the only report tore get inside this gated community this afternoon. >> reporter: yes, and there's a lot of activity back in there. it was hard to see from the

road, but a resident was nice enough to let us ride along with her. she lives across the street from the suspect. she knew who he was but said that he kept to himself, not a lot of interaction with neighbors. but because this is somewhat of a close nit community, they knew who he was and they were surprised. they said he was a quiet guy. all this started happening around noon today, when he thought he was going to basically be a suicide bomber and set off a bomb vest, which was in fact a dud. and he wanted to hurt, he allegedly told officials, up to 30 people. after his arrest, officials came here. i'm at windham circle in alexandria on the west end of alexandria. that's where right now officials are searching his apartment to try to figure out what was in

there. they do believe he was acting alone. but in this type of sting operation, you can never be sure. also, there is a second search going on in another part of this area in arlington. we have information that the fbi joint terrorism task force agents are conducts some sort of investigation at a house in douglas park in arlington. the fbi and cif and arlington county police are on the scene of the 1600 block of south randolph street. we're not entirely sure what's going on at this point. but certainly federal officials have to be commended for uncovering what could have been a potentially deadly terrorism plot. a plot to harm u.s. citizens in one of the most sacred places for the united states, the u.s. capitol. so this is all unfolding. we're getting reaction from residents and we'll have more coming up later on. >> jane, where you are right now, are those condominiums and

do we have any idea if he was living there alone or how long he lived there? >> reporter: we don't know the timeline. we do believe this is where he lived. we don't know if there's more family here, but according to some published reports, he entered this country from morocco about 12 years ago when he was 16. he was here illegally. his visa expired and he stayed. i did not get a sense as to how long he's lived in this particular condo, whether he's renting or whether he owns it. >> jane, has anybody said who he thought he was dealing with when he got these inert products to make this bomb? >> reporter: one has to believe according to the reports we had, he thought he was dealing with other terrorists. apparently he had made statements that he wanted to either blow up a u.s. military instalation or a jewish

synagogue. then he settled on his target as the u.s. capitol. it sounds like someone gained his confidence, an undercover agent and knew exactly what he was going to do, monitored him so no one was in any harm during this time. but it seems like the federal agents infiltrated what would have been a terrible terror plot. >> jane outside the suspect's home there in alexandria with new information for us. thanks so much. >> we will have live team coverage coming up at 5:00, including reports from pete williams. now to our weekend weather. are we going to see some snow? maybe, on sunday. >> let's get a timeline and maybe just how much. any sense how big this will be? >> you want all those answers right now? you guys want a lot, don't you? this is a storm system that's had a lot of uncertainty over the last couple of days. in fact, today is no different.

the national weather service, they put up a winter storm watch right now for that pocket southwest where you see shaded in blue. right now that will include warren county, culpeper county in virginia, orange county, points off to the west, including east central west virginia to start on sunday and run through sunday afternoon and sunday evening. they're thinking five inches of snow or more. so throughout most of the viewing area, we could see between nothing and maybe four inches of snow. i'm going to try and be more specific on what your neighborhood could get coming up later. again, this is a system that's had a lot of uncertainty with it. it's tracked and has been trending south. so stick around for the forecast coming up. 54, our temperature has been breezy today. northwest wind at 13 miles per hour. we're at 48 in gaithersburg to 60 in warrenton. and guess what?

tomorrow's temperatures will be even higher across the area. our storm system still far down to the south, so what is it going to do next? i'll detail it for you coming up. millions are expected to watch on television and online as whitney houston is remembered at a funeral service tomorrow. >> today, a private wake was held for houston's family members. mark barger is live in newark, new jersey with the latest developments. are we starting to see some familiar faces arrive right now? >> reporter: not yet. we will probably see them later today. in fact, at the viewing going on a short distance from here, they're trying to shield the media so that they can't see. they're holding up a sheet to block the people as they arrive for that wake. behind me, the church -- we've been moved back from it, but mourners continue to congregate outside that church where whitney houston attended as a child to pay their respects.

suspension. some have complained about the new dosing system after they pushed part of it into the medicine bottle. the company's website has more information about getting a refund. and the contraception controversy escalated on capitol hill today. democratic women blasted a house committee hearing yesterday. that hearing concerned the white house decision to require institutions with religious affiliations to cover birth control as part of their health plans. you'll recall of the ten witnesses scheduled to testify, not a single one was a woman. senator barbara boxer denounced what she called a republican house of representatives that is hostile to women's health. >> a 2-year-old girl is in critical condition affair ripped through her maryland home. it happened around 2:00 a.m. inside a townhouse in district heights. three adults and a 9-year-old boy were able to make it out after a smoke alarm went off. the girl was trapped in an upstairs bedroom.

firefighters rescued her but she wasn't breathing. they managed to revive her and take her to the hospital. a neighbor says the fire lit up the sky. >> just a big blaze, and i was sitting in my neighbor's house across the street and i looked out her window and you could see the fire shooting out of the second floor. >> the little girl is in critical condition this afternoon. the boy was treated for smoke inhalation. he's expected to be okay. the fire started in the kitchen but what caused it is still under investigation. the george huguely murder trial ended early because a member of his defense team is still sick. testimony will resume tomorrow morning. he's accused of killing his ex-girlfriend yardley love during a drunken rage mac in may of 2010. when court resumed this morning,

a small plane flew into marine one's air space out in los angeles yesterday, while the president was on board. fighter jets intercepted the plane and escorted it to a nearby airport. that's where authorities found more than 20 pounds of marijuana on board that small plane.

it sounds like we're not going to have an all-wet weekend, right? >> that's right. saturday we're fine. in fact, sunday morning i think we're still good. we're talking about the last quarter, and even that for folks who wanted snow, that's not looking the greatest right now. outside, boy, oh boy, wasn't it a great day today? >> oh, yeah. >> did you get a chance to take advantage of it. well, i tell you, we have been enjoying a very nice day.

it's been a little on the breezy side, but the temperatures have been in the 50s today. we've had that northwest wind around 15 miles per hour, gusting as high as 20 and 25 miles per hour. but sunshine is what we have had around the area today. into the low 50s up to the north. look at frederick at 52 on the temperatures here. 55 to 57 degrees, culpeper towards fredericksburg. so lots of mild air. tomorrow, real important, the fact that we are going to have more mild air sticking around sunday with that sunday snowstorm. 9:00, down to 45. 42 by 11:00 p.m. 35 degrees by tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. and 34 by 7:00 a.m. dry for us and lots of sunshine early on. storm4 radar, the storm is down to the south around texas and around areas of the gulf coast. you can see the rain there.

houston, some showers up to the north into memphis. all this part of the storm system. there's another link to the north and that's the cold air that has to meet up with it at the right time. here's what we're looking at right now. this will be trending a lot more down to the south, along with the fact killing our chances of getting a lot of snow, it's going to be pretty mild tomorrow, upper 50s for temperatures. cloud also be on the increase. here comes the precip with some air changing over, and mild temperatures down at the surface, mild ground, mild pavement, a lot of that will be melting. but this area of low pressure, a little more down to the south as it passes east through the area. there will be areas, a little sweet spot with the haves and have-nots where you can go from frederick maryland with no snow to charlottesville where there could be a lot of snow. gaithersburg, frederick,

story. the fbi arrested a man for planning a suicide terror attack at the u.s. capitol visitor's center. law enforcement officials tell us they've identified him as 29-year-old amine el khalifi. they say he's from morocco will you lives in alexandria, virginia. agents were searching his home this afternoon. he was arrested today just blocks from the u.s. capitol after he put on what he thought was a vest containing explosives. that vest contained inert material. that is, not explosive. and he was dealing with undercover fbi operatives for months. fbi officials say he had been under close observation for just that long and they believe he in fact did act alone. we'll have live team coverage including a report from inside his gated community. final preparations are under way for whitney houston's funeral tomorrow. aretha franklin and stevie wonder will perform.

veronica says the track of that snowstorm is trending south, but could that change? >> it could change, but even if it were to, i don't think this is going to be a big deal at all for sunday. or even monday morning. and monday is a holiday for us. so very, very mild temperatures around, not just tomorrow but also today. look at the temperature, 48 degrees now. 59 in warrenton.

we'll drop down to the 30s with clear skies. you can see the clouds increasing tomorrow, so turning partly sunny. watch what happens on sunday. there's a snapshot on sunday morning. sunday afternoon, 3:30. that's when the precip will be sliding right by d.c. again, a system that will be staying down to the south of us. so it's just going to be grazing us. we'll be on the northern edge of the precip and snow. some areas woman get anything at all. some area also get a little snow. a high of 54 in frederick tomorrow. 58 in d.c. and fredericksburg. you can see charlottesville close to 60 and that pocket is where there could be the highest amounts of snow, between two and four inches late sunday, early monday morning. around 2:00 a.m. when all this pulls out of the area. so culpeper, petersburg, right now you're expected to get around two to four inches of

snow. only a few flakes to the north of gaithersburg and columbia, maryland. so that's the way it's looking right now with a system that will start with snow sunday afternoon but a lot of it will be melting on contact with the pavement, with the sidewalks for sunday. as far as the early part of next week, 46 for a high on monday. a cold start for us. into the 50s, upper 50s for the midpart of next week. so right back up with the temperatures. >> i've got to put away the sled, huh? >> not looking very hopeful right now. >> jim? ♪ >> so why do people applaud when the stock market closes, especially if the market had a down day? can you recycle those reusable grocery bags? and a question about a new airline ticket rule. it's friday and liz joins was the answers. >> i'm glad someone asked this ticketing question because i

didn't know it. >> from rick in bethesda, liz. he wants to snow about these new ticket rules that allow us to cancel a reservation within 24 hours without a penalty. does that apply to any reservation? >> well, the department of transportation gave us this answer. it says that the new rules for booking air travel went into effect in late january. now passengers who book travel are able to cancel that without penalty for 24 hours after the reservation is made. however, this is the key, this rule is only valid when the reservation is made one week or more before your flight's departure date. so if you're trying to book a flight and you try to cancel it the same day, you will be charged a penalty. >> because they need time to refill the seat. now we know. our next question is from mary in maryland. he wants to know why people applaud when the stock market

closes, even if it's a down day? >> seems awkward, the stocks fell and people are collecting. we contacted the new york stock exchange. they said people are invited to ring the bell for an important occasion. they could be applauding a number of things, like the launch of a product or the anniversary of a company. arrangements to ring the bell are made well in advance, so there is no way to know how the market will do. so they're marking the occasion, not whether the market was up or down. no matter how awkward it looks. >> they're always smiling, too. you can't applaud and not smile. last question is from aaron. one of the straps on her reusable grocery bag broke and she wants to know if there's a way to recycle the bag. >> earth911.com says you can recycle them through a repurposing program from a company called chico bag. chico bag will donate the usable

a ska california couple is lucky to be alive after getting stranded in a snowstorm. donna cordova has more on how they survived for days with little food and little water. >> reporter: our camera was there the minute they got word wednesday the couple had been

found. they are filling in the rest. they held a news conference to describe what happened after they set out for a drive sunday morning and hit trouble on a remote road. they were stuck in snow. it was getting dark. and snowing. >> i made the cardinal sin of not telling anybody where i was going. >> reporter: they had snacks and a little water, which could only last so long. one day past, then two. they wrote out s.o.s. and help in the snow using branches. >> with the gas, i would run the car at night because it got really cold, like 19 degrees. so in whys and what ifs are going through your head. >> reporter: on wednesday, he decided to hike uphill. >> he didn't have a good coat, we had no blankets. i gave him my socks to put on his hands for gloves. >> reporter: mark showed off the plastic bags he used to cover
