but here in d.c. a very different story. good evening, everyone. i'm aaron gilchrist. schools in culpepper county, virginia will open two hours late tomorrow. in general, though, this is not going to be a president's day storm for the record books. storm 4 meet'll roh jift chuck bell joins us now with the details. and kind of a dud around here, chuck. >> no doubt about it. 2003 and had blockbuster president's weekend snowstorms. this one here kind of fizzled out for the washington area. but as you mentioned, central and southwestern virginia definitely had quite a hit of snow. the weather channel's mike seidel is in withville, virginia with some of the impressive totals. >> reporter: hey, chuck and aaron. the snow is winding down here in southwest virginia, but we picked up 8 1/2 inches here in withville. we're about an hour or so down 81 from roanoke. and just a couple miles down the road big problems this afternoon. late this afternoon a tractor-trailer jackknifed, shutting down both northbound lanes for over five hours. some cars detoured, but most of the semis sat tight, and we

watched them this evening roll up the highway en masse. meanwhile, some of the other snowfall totals not far from the district out there in the far suburbs in staunton, virginia picking up five inches of snow. charlottesville, four inches. and in richmond they've had three-plus as the snow continues to fall there this evening. so driving down 95 a little touch and go early in the morning. it will be the back roads, the untreated roads that will be at times slushy and slippery. good day tomorrow here in southwest virginia. but again, the largest storm of the season. and it wouldn't have taken much coming into today. only .4 inches of snow so far in roanoke. and here in withville they've only seen the ground white a couple of times. it was the first chance to get out the sleds, the plows, and the shovels. chuck and aaron, back to you. >> all right. thanks, mike. we didn't need the shovels or the plows. didn't even need road salt in most locations. temperatures right now still generally above the freezing mark. 36 here in washington. winter weather advisories still from fredricksburg south to the

richmond area along the south side of the potomac river there. here you can see on storm 4 doppler, indeed a little bit of snow especially across parts of st. mary's county, you folks down to learnedtown, st. mary's city, sullivan's island. highlighted up there in northern virginia -- or northern maryland, rather it looks like i little snow coming down but i assure you that's mostly rain, nothing more than a few conversation al flakes. generally less than an inch for the southern suburbs. one to two right around fredricksburg out to about culpepper. as he mentioned, though, two to five inches plus as you get down toward charlottesville and central virginia. what about the rest of the president's day weekend and the week ahead? that forecast in a few more minutes. aaron. >> we'll see you in a bit. thank you, chuck. a huge highway sign and the steel arm holding it up came crashing down onto a truck on i-66 in fairfax county last weekend. tonight two more signs in northern virginia have come down. this time, though, as a precautionary measure. vdot removed two signs near the prince william parkway in

woodbridge. that's because cracked anchor bolts were found during inspections. v-dot says it still doesn't know why the sign in fairfax came down but there were problems with some of its bolts, too. hundreds of whitney houston fans lined the streets of newark, new jersey today after hollywood said its good-byes yesterday. the fans wanted one last chance before whitney was buried in a private ceremony. nbc's ida segal has more. >> reporter: capped at a distance outside the fairview cemetery in westfield were throngs of journalists but also at least 100 fans waiting for one last look before the woman with the 1 in a million voice was laid to rest. >> i just wanted to be here and just -- you know, just get a glimpse, a look of her going in to her final resting place. >> reporter: and their glimpse came as the gold hearse carrying whitney houston pulled up. a few pink roses thrown on top and fans shouting their good-byes. >> we love you, whitney! >> we grew up listening to

whitney, and as a little girl she was an inspiration for me. she taught me how to be a young lady. she taught me how to reach for the stars. she's just an icon in my life. ♪ can you send an angel >> reporter: yesterday's funeral in newark was a star-studded event. a celebration of sorts of a woman who gave so much joy and endured so much pain. this morning fans lined up outside the funeral home waiting for just those few moments they'd get to see whitney as she drive by. >> that's all i wanted to do, to give me closure, when i see the hearse come by. because the first moment i thaerd i couldn't stop crying. >> reporter: whitney houston was laid to rest next to her father. her grave site is not accessible to the public -- >> and she wasn't well enough to attend houstontion funer's fune hours later the queen of soul was back on stage. aretha franklin paid tribute to whitney houston at radio city

music hall last night. franklin sang part of "i will always love you" and said houston was "a very fine young lady." earlier in the day franklin cited leg spasms that made her too ill to perform at the funeral. a funeral today for a woman shot and killed by a culpepper county police officer earlier this month. 54-year-old patricia cook was killed after getting into a confrontation with the officer in a church parking lot on northeast street. the officer shot kick after she allegedly rolled up her car window on his arm and started to drive. a witness told news 4, though, that cook never drove off. virginia state police are investigating. two people were injured in a house fire in prince george's county today. it broke out about 8:00 along beaumont street in temple hills. firefighters say both victims should be okay. the family that lived in that house, though, will have to find somewhere else to sleep tonight. investigators are trying to figure out what started that fire. a day of skiing ended in tragedy in washington state today after an avalanche. this happened in an out of bounds area just outside of

skykomish, washington. a group of four skiers was swept 1,500 feet down a mountainside. three didn't make it out. jim foreman has our report. >> reporter: it was the kind of day skiers dream of. a winter storm had just dropped a lot of fresh powder. for the most experienced and extreme skiers and boarders it's the kind of day to challenge yourself. unfortunately, that means challenging nature, too. >> and i saw probably about 12 to 15 people hiking up and over. >> reporter: brent felt says he saw groups of skiers climbing over a place called seventh heaven heading into the back country. >> i thought to myself that's a lot of people going out of bounds at this moment, but you know, it's -- 14 inches of new snow, and if people want to get some more fresh powder they're going to go seek it out. >> reporter: then without warning it happened. the snow cut loose sweerngs up the three groups of skiers in an avalanche. >> and at one point after the avalanche they're all buried in the snow. they manage to dig themselves out of the snow. at that point they realize that three of them are in distress,

three of the skiers are in distress. they begin cpr. >> reporter: unfortunately, the cpr didn't work. three men, 30, 35, and 45 years old, were pronounced dead on the mountainside. >> there is signage up letting everybody know that these are out of bounds areas. and they opted to ski those particular areas. >> reporter: brent felt says he noticed those caught up in the avalanche were heading out prepared with the right equipment. >> and they had their beacons, sensors that were going off every time they went through the sensory zone. >> that was jim foreman reporting. it has been a deadly winter in washington state. a snowboarder died today after he went over a cliff at a separate ski resort. and four people are presumed dead after they disappeared while camping during storms on mount rainier last month. we turn now to decision 2012. the white house is lashing out at rick santorum after he said the president believed in a phony theology. today santorum hit the sunday

talk show circuit saying his comments were misrepresented. nbc's ron mott has the new developments. >> it's not about your jobs. it's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. >> reporter: after saying the president's energy philosophy was based on a phony theology saturday -- >> i wasn't suggesting the president's urbannot a christia. >> reporter: rick santorum had a real challenge, separating religion from theology, no less on a sunday. >> so senator, i've got to ask you, what in the world were you talking about, sir? >> well, i was talking about the -- the radical environmentalists. that's why i was talking about energy. >> your use of the word "theolo "theology" or do you wonder that that might lead some people to suggest that you were questioning the president's faith? >> well, no. because i've repeatedly said i don't question the president's faith. i've repeatedly said i believe the president's a christian. he says he's a christian. but i am talking about his worldview. >> reporter: each of the republican candidates has voiced disapproval of the president's stance on energy and the environment. only santorum, who serves in the

polls after winning an election trifecta earlier this month, has linked them to theology. >> a different theology. >> reporter: the former pennsylvania senator not only explained his use of the word this morning, he also answered his critics saying that prenatal care leads to more abortions. >> a lot of prenatal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortions. >> reporter: meantime, mitt romney remained out of the spotlight sunday in utah, where he took part in tenth anniversary celebrations this weekend for the '02 winter olympics. and back on the campaign trail -- >> thank you very much. >> reporter: -- ron paul played to large crowds in missouri saturday before heading to north dakota today. while newt gingrich focused on his home state of georgia, citing the importance of home field advantage. >> if any of the three of us lose our home state, if santorum loses pennsylvania, romney loses michigan, or i lose you have i think have a, very badly

all right. so we'll admit it is nothing close to a blizzard, but some people in our area did get a little bit of snow tonight. news 4's darcy spencer searched far and wide for some snowflakes out there, and you found some, darcy? >> reporter: i sure did, aaron. you know, just until a few minutes ago we were getting sort of a wintry mix here in woodbridge. we were getting mostly rain but a little bit of snow in there. it's basically tapered off at this point. but here's proof that it really did snow. take a look here. the roads are pretty much wet, but here you can see a little bit of snow still laying on the ground, enough for maybe a small snowman. we drove here to woodbridge from fredricksburg, and they got a little more of the white stuff. in the fredricksburg area the snow made it a beautiful winter wonderland. large heavy flakes falling and laying on grassy surfaces and cars. for some it was about time. especially this man. it's his birthday. >> it was great. i think we've been missing the

winter just about all year. so it's great to have a little bit of it. >> reporter: here in springfield the snow was mixed with rain, but the further south you went on interstate 95 it was all snow. that made driving conditions tricky in northern virginia. road crews were already out, heading toward the highways. >> the roads aren't too bad except 17's starting to get slick. and i live off of hartwood road and they're getting slick there now. but the highway interstate's good. it's clear. on. >> reporter: on a snowy night like tonight if you have to be out you want your car in good working order. we found one man putting air in his tires because one of them was low. he just wasn't sure which one. >> the worst night of all nights tonight. >> reporter: what do you think of the snow other than that? >> i'm not really one for cold. but you know, we've got to deal with it. i figured it was going to come sooner or later. >> reporter: so he did finally figure out which tire was missing the air. and so he's good to go. you know, it really made a big difference in terms of where you are and how much snow you've got

this evening. and for the most part people were happy about it and people were saying, you know, tomorrow's the president's day holiday. so folks will stay home and enjoy what little snow we did get. reporting line from woodbridge, darcy spencer, news 4. >> all right, darcy, thank you. and chuck's here now. and little snow we did get. >> no doubt about it. doug and veronica have the forecast at 5:00, 6:00, and 11:00 saying nothing in the way of accumulations here. i was a little more optimistic saturday morning. i thought maybe an inch. and then reality set in. >> i'll teach you about optimism. >> especially in this winter without winter you dare not forecast anymore. just trace amounts of snow every winter. now with mar just around the corner i'm starting to worry that twoish inches may be all we end up with for the entire winter season. that's our total so far. and i don't see any snowflakes in the seven-day. yuts right now a little snow still coming down. this is penn quarter in downtown

washington, northwest washington. a few stray snowflakes can be found. certainly not enough to stick to the very warm pavement and sidewalks in downtown washington. and you sort of saw that in darcy's video as well. the big roads are just fine. get on the grassy areas south of downtown. there's just a little bit of a coating out there but not much going on in downtown washington. kind of a quiet sunday night out there. just a little mix of light rain and light snow. 36 degrees now here in washington. winds have come back around to the west at only five miles per hour. metro temperatures, warmer temperatures the further north you go. still a little bit suppressed, some colder air down to andrews air force base, hunter county, fort bevel oir. fredricksburg, all a lot closer to the freezing mark because they've had a little bit more of a sustained period with the light snow. it's been all very light rain across far northern maryland. and your president's day planner, a lot of folks have the day off from work and school. temperatures upper 20s and low 30s early in the morning, but bright sunshine returns tomorrow

with temperatures back up close to average generally into the mid and upper 40s tomorrow. sunday night snow potential mostly rain one or two snowflakes, and that is going to be it for you folks north of 270 and north of the capital beltway. generally less than an inch if even hardly anything. until you get down into charles county, st. mary's county, about an inch for you folks down there. one to two near fredricksburg out toward culpepper the big winners no doubt out across central virginia where winner weather advisories are posted. here's the last of the steadiest snowflakes. this is all going to be coming to an end over the next two to three hours. the main area low pressure is aiming for the banks of north carolina as it races out to sea. it will quickly turn off all the precipitation as everything coming to an end high pressure builds on in. nshine returns for tomorrow. seasonably cold weather tomorrow night. 20s and 30s again by tuesday morning. and as you get into the middle of the week, looks like a little bit of a cloudy stretch coming our way. not a whole lot of rain but an

espn fired one employee and suspended another today for using offensive language referring to knicks phenom jeremy lin. the term was used in a headline on the channel's mobile website on friday. it was also spoken by an espn anchor. the headline writer was fired. the anchor was suspended for 30 days. espn has apologized for both incidents. the term was also used on espn radio. but that commentator was not a network employee. a guy in frederick, maryland goes to jail after police say he tried to take pictures of women in fitting rooms at a goodwill store. police say dominik williams spangler tried to snap photos of the women under the stalls in the dressing rooms. an officer tracked down spangler after getting a description of him from people at that store on willowdale drive. spangler is also charged with assault.
