mall, the tiny capsule that carried glenn for the historic three hoshts orbits is on displ >> three times. >> three times. >> in this little thing. >> yeah. >> what did you think when you see it? >> i think that he wouldn't have been comfortable in there. >> the andrew emerson family from bethesda was part of a big crowd at the smithsonian's most visited museum. all sorts of languages could be heard as tourists relived the american achievement and how it affected them. you're looking here. what are you thinking 50 years ago? >> i was in first grade at the time. in ohio. so john glenn was my hero and i became a b-52 navigator and went to the air force because of john glenn and 50 years ago today. >> reporter: while the tourists took in the sights, john glenn this week was warning again that america is foolish to turn from the space travel and exploration. this family from san francisco and others agreed with glenn. >> space is the next frontier and you really ought to explore
5:47 pm
it and experience it to figure out what else is out there. >> not only that but it creates a lot of jobs and interest among young people to pursue, not just space but any kind of scientific field. >> you can see the history of aviation right here. >> i think if we quit we're not going to see any more progress. >> john glenn is now 90 years old in 1998 when he was 77 he became the oldest person to travel in space. that is such a small capsule. >> when you walk by there is really no sign. >> they need a much bigger sign. i was walking past it and the person said it's right here. >> amazing. he is amazing. makes you want to go rent the right stuff again. >> thank you, tom. let's get the final word on the weather now. how are we looking, doug? >> we look great guys over the next couple days. a lot of people really happy to see this nice, warm weather this winter. we've really dodged a bullet
5:48 pm
because we've had rough winters in the past and a lot of people say i guess what's coming is going to be a lot worse in march and april because they've got to even things out. remember the winter of 2009-2010, this winter i think evening out just a little bit between the extremely snowy winters we've had in the past and the not so snowy winter we've had this winter. just a few flurries is what we saw last night. a few flurries around gaithersburg, annapolis, washington if that and then right down in through portions of fairfax county in through portions of prince george's county down around charles county a dusting to an inch there. we saw 1 to 3 inches though around culpepper over through fredericksburg and right over toward the lexington park area in through portions of st. mary's county and the big winners charlottesville coming in with around 6 inches of snow in some areas down around the southern counties picking up 4 to 10 inches of snow. so no, most areas didn't see much but down to the south and west they saw a lot. 49 degrees the current temperature out there right now with winds out of the west-northwest at 8 miles per hour.
5:49 pm
temperatures around the region 43 in leesburg. 48 right now in fredericksburg and la plata. waldorf both coming in right now at 47 degrees. we'll see a nice evening although i think the temperatures are going to fall off fairly quickly. we don't have many clouds in the sky at all. the sky is clear and you can see on storm 4 radar no rain to show you until we get way out to the west. that is the storm system that is going to develop and move toward our region overnight tonight through the day tomorrow and then in through wednesday. that you can see some snow on the back side but it's going to give us some extremely warm air. overnight tonight 33 in washington. 25 in leesburg. 24 in culpepper. and down to the south, fredericksburg 28 tonight. tomorrow temperatures warming up a little bit. we'll call it partly sunny with a high of 53 in washington. 50 in gaithersburg. back toward manassas around 52 degrees. 55 in culpepper. here is the next couple days showing 60 on wednesday. 67 on thursday. and then a good chance for rain and maybe a big storm on friday. could be an all day rain event with a high temperature in the low 60s. i do think it will be strong
5:50 pm
enough to bring in some cold air on the back side but once again this year we're not seeing cold air just cool air. we'll calling it 46 on saturday and 48 on sunday. cool. >> all right. that is cool. you know we're rounding out that 67 and calling that 70. >> let's just do it. >> all right. thank you, doug. >> clinton portis talking a comeback. come on. >> yeah. believe it. they say don't cl it a comeback but be clinton you may have to. he spent seven years with the redskins before mike shanahan cut him loose last year and he is only 30. so portis feels like there is some gas left in the tank. we caught up with clinton at the palm in d.c. last night to discuss his potential comeback. it's not the career he was looking for but clinton portis was at the palm restaurant last night as a celebrity server. several former and current redskins were there helping raise money for rocky mcintosh's a grand foundation. only 26 players in nfl history have rushed for more yards than
5:51 pm
portis and he would like to break the 10,000 yard plateau. he is currently stuck on 9,923. and he's thinking comeback. he believes he can be successful after a year of introspection. >> i have more spirituality now. i think just having the clarity, the time to put things in perspective, growing up really. you know, that was the best thing. growing up. becoming a man. becoming a responsible, understanding and ready to have fun again. i feel like it's a lot of unfinished business. i don't want to go out on those terms of not being around the last three years, you know, i took a year off to really get things in perspective and i want to continue to play football. so it's that simple. i want to continue to play and i'm ready. >> after his unceremonious release by the redskins following the 2010 season, clinton portis might find it hard to come back to the
5:52 pm
community but says that is not the case at all. when rocky called inviting him to be involved, clinton jumped at the opportunity. >> it's lovely. i don't want to not be a part of this community. you know, i spent the last seven years of my life here so being a part of this community is crucial and having this opportunity is wonderful. >> reporter: now his focus is on returning to the nfl and he'd like the opportunity anywhere he can get it. even if it happens to be with the redskins again. >> i mean, who knows what is going to happen, man? i don't rule anything out but at the same time i think the redskins organization moved on and that's understandable. you know for myself it's just a matter of playing football again, it don't matter where it's at. >> somebody said last night on twitter maybe clinton would fit in well with the baltimore ravens backing up ray rice. the question is, is clinton going to accept the role as a backup? he's never been known as the hardest worker out there.
5:53 pm
he talks about how his perfect practice would be sitting on a beach chair watching everybody else. so we'll see if he has changed his opinion. >> his personality has dialed back a bit. >> i think just for the camera. >> been there. thank you. >> you're welcome. >> let's find out what's in the works for news 4 at 6:00 tonight. doreen joins us with a preview. tonight on news 4 at 6:00 countdown to michigan. tonight the republican presidential hopefuls are fighting for votes ahead of next week's primary in the battleground state. plus a show of silence in virginia. the political issue that brought out hundreds of women in protest today. also help for couples having trouble trying to conceive. details behind a new fertility test for men that can be done in the privacy of your own home. those stories and more coming up on news 4 at 6:00 in just a few minutes. see you then. >> thanks. coming up next, dozens of lives changed forever after a marathon kidney swap. >> and for all your news be sure to follow news 4 online.
