left in limbo as they awaited treatment. today they're getting welcome news. good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. steps taken, important ones to ease the severe shortage of two crucial cancer drugs that have patients worried about missing life threatening treatments. >> the drugs are in short supply. supply of two have faulten to critical levels, in some cases they weren't made available to new patients. today the fada announced new suppliers for the medication. they will have a replacement drug for doxil. and approved a generic form of methotrexate, which is used to treat children who are suffering from a form of leukemia. this is good news for parents.

>> it's hard enough to hear your child has cancer. but to hear that the treatment that is successfully working is suddenly not available is devastating. >> this shortage began back in 2008. it started with quality concerns in the plant where they were manufactured. >> what was behind a high speed deadly car crash that happened at a fast food restaurant? this afternoon, authorities in prince georges county are still trying to figure out what went wrong. >> that crash at the kfc on martin luther king highway killed a 29-year-old woman and injured several other people. news 4's melissa malehy has the latest. >> reporter: a potentially weak wall braced with 2x4s for safety. all of this minimal compared to what happened outside monday night. >> the impact was so hard, that

the glass flew everywhere. >> reporter: the crash scene more than 100 feet long. police say the bmw was speeding eastbound on martin luther king, jr. highway when the driver lost control. the car came careening through this gas station parking lot, flipping, taking out these shrubs, scraping the asphalt, knocking over a clothing donation box, tearing through this fence. smashing to the back of an suv and the restaurant's front windows, coming to rest in the parking lot. >> we got out to see what was going on. and it's just horrible. >> reporter: the 29-year-old female driver of the black bmw was ejected from the car and killed. her passenger a man, as well as the driver of the suv and two others suffered nonlife threatening injuries. rose smith was at the gas station next door when the car came crashing through. >> when it hit the curb it went airborne and just flip, flip, flip, flip, flip. >> reporter: crews were out here much of the night, a collapse team to secure the building. and then a police reconstruction

team came on scene. investigators plan to review the restaurant's surveillance tapes. >> the proximity of how it ended up almost into the kfc, potentially hurting other patrons inside, it could have been much, much worse. >> debris still litters the parking lot, grass, cd and poster. a construction crew showed up early tuesday morning. and next door, the citgo manager will spend her day cleaning up. >> we have glass from here all the way over. >> reporter: news 4 spoke with kfc management, they do not know when the restaurant may reopen. as for police, they are doing tests to see if it was speed or drugs or alcohol that played a part in the crash. >> the woman who died in the crash is identified as helena smith. prince georges county police tell us she has a history of traffic citations.

coming up tonight at 5:00, darcie spencer has exclusive new details about the moments leading up to the crash from eyewitnesss and friends of the victim. >> opening statements began today in the trial of five men accused in one of the deadliest shootings in d.c. history. four people were killed in a drive by shooting in mafr 2010. five others were with wounded in that same shooting. six others were hurt in a series of related attacks. all five of the defendants face a life sentence without parole if they're convicted. news 4's pat collins was at the hearing and will have the latest on this story in a live report coming up at 5:00. same sex marriage is one step closer to being legal in the state of maryland. the senate judicial proceedings committee approved the measure by a vote of 7-4. the bill that would allow same sex couples to marry is on its way to the full senate. the maryland senate is expected to vote by the end of the week. and advocates are confidence they will have enough votes to

pass it. last week the maryland house narrowly passed its version of the bill. the u.s. supreme court is going to take another look at the use of affirmative action in college admissions. the case involves a white student who was denied entry to the university of tem as. back in 2003, the high court ruled it was okay for schools to consider race in the admissions process. this time around a more conservative court will be weighing this hot button issue and could vote to outlaw it. the case will be argued in the fall. turning now to the weather. it's a little windy out there. otherwise it's been a pleasant day. >> it is blowing out there. veronica johnson is in the storm center with an update for us. >> as promised, we had the winds around today. still on the breezy side, i don't expect the winds to diminish until after the sun sets. boy, you're exactly right, it was another great day to us, with a mixture of clouds and sunshine. we're getting more in the way of clearing right now, with our

temperatures close to average. the average now for our high, 49 degrees, we're right at 50 with a southwest wind blowing in at 18 miles per hour. just take a look throughout the area right now, herndon and maclaine and vienna. current temperature at 50 degrees. around waldorf, we're at 50 degrees in prince georges county. you folks to the north can't forget about you in montgomery county, you're now 46 degrees in olney and gaithersburg. we have the clouds and a little bit of clearing taking place throughout the area. can you see where the hole is. we'll drop to 45 by 7:00, 44 by 9:00. not too bad at all. and it's not going to be that cold tomorrow morning, boy oh, boy, you're going to want to see what's blowing in later this week. stick around for that full forecast. dominique strauss-kahn may face new legal troubles today. the former head of the international monetary fund

spent this day being questioned by police. they're looking into a suspected prostitution ring in france and belgium. some of the prostitutes had sex with strauss-kahn during 2010 and 2011 in locations in paris as well as locations here in washington. dominique strauss-kahn was a front-runner for the french presidency until he was arrested in new york and charged with sexually assaulting a hotel housekeeper. one week to go until the michigan primary, it is considered a must-win for mitt romney. and he has closed within three points tonight of current front-runner rick santorum. the latest gallop tracking poll shows santorum has a larger lead nationwide. steve handlesman has our story. >> reporter: it's more than just michigan next week. arizona holds a primary and rick santorum is there today. >> you can speak loudly on tuesday. that you want someone who's

♪ chris brown and reanna have put the past behind them for the sake of creating new music. rihanna is featured on the remix of "turn up the volume." brown pleaded guilty to felony charge of assaulting then girlfriend rihanna at a pregrammy awards party in 2009. right now he's serving five years of probation for that attack. last year a judge eased a restraining order against him. rihanna said she no longer resents brown and that she enjoys his music. rihanna is setting a bad example for young women by collaborating with chris brown again. aretha franklin's denying rumors today she was banned from the funeral of whitney houston. the new york daily news reports

>> when we all shop online, all of a sudden, for the next few days you're getting ads for those same shoes. apparently target has a similar policy, where it can keep track of the things you bought at the store, and they're able to send you coupons for things they think you might need. this girl goes in there and was buying certain lotions and vitamins and all this, and it triggered something in the target computer that said, hey, you're pregnant we're going to send you coupons for baby items. the dad was not happy. he brings all these coupons into the store. why are you sending my high school daughter coupons for baby items. the manager apologized, they looked into it and they found out the daughter was preg nantz 37 who could blame him, that's got to be a shock. >> it has to make you think target nose more than dad does. >> yes. >> we got the idea.

welcome back 20 to news 4 at 4:00. >> prince georges county police have identified the woman who crashed her vehicle into the kentucky fried chicken in landover. helena smith died in the crash. several other people were injured. investigators are still trying to figure out why smith was driving so fast. and why she lost control of her vehicle. dominique strauss-kahn spent the day in a french police

station. he was called in for questioning in connection with a suspected prostitution ring in france and belgium. there are allegations that some of the prostitutes he had sex with in locations in paris and washington. patients who need cancer drugs have been in critically short supply are getting some welcome news today. the fda has taken steps to make sure the medicines will be more widely available. some patients have been denied the drug because of the shortage. and on wall street today, the dow climbed above the 13,000 level for the first time in nearly four years. it then dipped a bit, settling just under 13,000. the nasdaq is down three points and the s&p is up one point on the day. >> now to one of the nation's biggest parties. mardi gras in new orleans. hundreds of thousands of revellers are in the french quarter right now, fat tuesday. the annual celebration marks the

a pennsylvania woman thought she found the man her dreams through an online dating website. >> this is an incredible story. that dream turned into a nightmare shortly after the birth of their child.

>> reporter: christie thought she had finally found mr. perfect on a dating website. he told her his name was ed. >> we talked about marriage, we talked about getting a house together, moving in together. making a life together. >> reporter: the 29-year-old pennsylvania woman thought he was american royalty. >> he told me and my entire family that he was a dupont. the whole story of his family and the castles in delaware. >> reporter: she remembers he occasionally bragged about his elite job. >> he said he works with the cia. >> reporter: ed also told her he was divorced and his ex-wife could not have children. after dating for about six months, she got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl gabriella. at the time the couple lived separately. one sunday night, ed took his 2-month-old daughter and promised to return her the next day. >> i started texting him, he's not responding to my text messages and phone calls.

so i lost it, and i just went crazy. >> reporter: when she finally managed to get her daughter back, christie dropped a bombshell. >> he's like, i'm married, i can't divorce my wife because i'll lose everything. >> you never knew he was married? >> never, never. >> never had any suspicion. >> no, i never did. >> reporter: she also found out ed dupont was really a businessman named emmit emmitt dippold. and they were adopting her baby. >> i couldn't believe he was sitting there telling me this. it was surreal. >> reporter: christie signed these papers right after gabrielle was born. he told her the legal document allowed him to claim rights as the father. >> i was like, okay. i had no reason not to trust him. i signed -- it wasn't -- the document was a few pages long. he gave me the signature page and said, get this signed. >> reporter: she actually agreed

to give up permanently all rights to this child. >> i felt like someone stabbed me with a knife. i couldn't believe that he would actually do something -- that anyone would actually do something so horrible. >> why didn't you read the papers? >> i looked at it. i said i really don't understand it. >> reporter: she took the couple to court and argued the agreement was based on fraud. there was no way she was giving up all her parental rights to this child. the couple filed an appeal. their lawyer had this to say. >> the document was signed in its entirety before two notaries who have testified under oath in court that she signed the document, emmitt has no interest in disparaging the birth mother. i'm here to make a plea to this

mentioned in trial. his roommate is accused of invading his privacy. >> this is a case of invasion of privacy. for setting up a camera on a computer and taking a peak at his roommate kissing another man. it wasn't recorded, it was not distributed on the insister net, and there's not evidence that tyler clement killed himself as a result of it. >> reporter: prosecutorers offered him a plea deal but they turned him down. >> he's innocent not guilty, that's why he rejected the plea. >> it's expected the defense will argue that his roommate was not targeting tyler for being gay. but the webcam turned on a couple times for a few minutes and viewed down the hall by a few friends. was a college prank.
