things will change by the time we start our week next week. i'll talk about that coming up. >> thanks, doug. dan won't care no he won't. >> he's down in florida having a great time. what's up, dan? >> reporter: it is a little chillier down here. might be 71 right now. >> you're looking tanned after one day. that's kind of disgusting. >> it was a lot of time, hard work in the sun today. >> mm-hmm. >> sure. >> reporter: i got to ask you before we get started here when is the last time you went to a physical and found out you had grown height wise? >> about 50, 60 years ago. >> i didn't want to put you on the spot but bryce harper found out today he has grown an inch and a half because he is only 19 years old. the kid is still growing and he is still the largest personality and probably the biggest story here at nationals spring training. we got a chance to sit down with him today and, you know, harper,
6:46 pm
he gets it. when you hear the things he says, in person, it doesn't sound like it does in print. so to compare himself to joe namaith and rieling redskins fans up on twitter he knows he has to get it done on the field. he is just trying to enjoy himself. >> i understand i got to perform on the field first but doint want to go out and get black out drunk. i've never been into that stuff. i'm not going out to party and give the nationals a bad name. i've never been that way ever. i come from a good family. they taught me a lot of things. i know that i need to do that. >> who does bryce harper remind you of? >> bryce harper? i don't compare -- every player has their own little mystique and talent. he's just got a lot of talent. he's been going up against people a lot older than him.
6:47 pm
at every level of development, at 17 i wrote his name down as the number one pick for the boston nationals, the draft. so i've been around him quite a bit. and he's a special talent. >> reporter: davie johnson just might be the biggest bryce harper fan down here. have your manager in your corner, good place to be. the nationals also had some company and they will be here the next few days, the wounded warriors amputee softball team sponsored by the nationals. they've been training at the complex getting ready for a double header they're going to have down here in vieira tomorrow night. these guys are having a grand old time here in spring training. the team comprised of veterans from afghanistan and iraq who are amputees. it's hard to tell who appreciates their presence here at the space coast stadium more, the wounded warriors or the nationals players and coaches because they are truly an inspiration. the nationals gave them first class treatment with a major league spread for lunch and a locker room setup just like the big leaguers have, complete with

uniforms. >> this is any athlete's dream. if you grew up playing ball and watch these guys on tv and you're like i'd love to meet them or love to go out and work out with them and then you get the opportunity, come down here, you know, what we're doing right now on the field as dream come true. >> it's like the kids in a candy store. these guys are living the dream being a round all these guys. we're inside the fence while most people are outside the fence. to get up close and personal with the major leaguers and talk with coaches and players they all have favorite players they like. they know who everybody is here. and for them to get an autograph or just talk to them personally it's a dream come true. >> by the way, we in the media played the wounded warrior amputees a couple nonts a softball game at nationals park and they thumped us. these guys are legitimately good baseball and softball players. reigning national league mvp ryan braun is now back on the field. he can breathe a sigh of relief
6:49 pm
after the 50-game suspension was canceled thrown out after a vote from an arbitration panel. braun tested positive for elevated testosterone in october and won the appeal of a positive drug test after it was revealed the collection process broke down. he provided a sample october 1st but it wasn't delivered to fedex until october 3rd. baseball's drug agreement states the samples must be delivered the same day they are collected because of the delay braun says the testing was fatally flawed. >> i truly believe in my heart and i would bet my life this substance never entered my body at any point. the truth is always relevant and at the end of the day the truth prevailed. i am a victim of a process that completely broke down and failed. the simple truth is that i'm innocent. i've maintained my innocence from day one and ultimately i was proven to be innocent. >> today is about everybody who's ever been wrongly accused. and everybody who's ever had to

6:51 pm
the ice. >> sweep this weekend and get right back up there. with any luck you're in third place so it's just you look at home ice. you're looking from 14 up. you're pretty cool. >> reporter: so montreal at the verizon center tonight and the capitals on the road in toronto tomorrow. on the outside looking in but only a couple points out of first place in their division. things could turn around quickly for the capitals. >> we expect it to.

coming up tonight, she is the woman to watch this weekend. not counting the oscars. we're talking about the daytona 500. we'll talk tonight to danica patrick. >> all right. one more check on our crazy weather. >> yeah. it's going to get crazy. if you're thinking about heading out tonight you're already doing so right now just be ready for the winds this evening. advisories until midnight. that's wind advisories for the entire area with gusts upwards of 50 miles per hour tonight. it's rhealy going to howl in some locations and winds already gusting upwards of 50 miles an hour out to the west and they'll continue to get close to that number. tomorrow clouds and sunshine. cool and windy. 45 to 48 degrees with winds gusting upwards of 40 miles an hour. temperatures will feel more like the 30s than the 40s. it is going to be a fairly cold day today. but we warm right back up. sunday the wind goes away. we still have the sunshine and temperatures near 50. that's a beautiful february day. monday even better with
6:55 pm
temperatures near 60. on tuesday temperatures around 56 degrees. it does look like we'll see another chance for showers, maybe some thunderstorms on wednesday. temperatures get back into the 60s. >> okay. see you at 1 suffolk. thank you, doug. coming up tonight at 11:00 thieves have been stealing cop frer odd places but just wait until you hear what a couple guys were doing with a bucket truck. also, mitt romney on the defense now after a comment about the number of cars, expensive cars his wife drives. he was speaking in detroit at the time. plus imagine being towed from two parking spaces that you pay for in front of your own home. that's the situation for some people in our area. we'll try to get to the bottom of it tonight at 11:00. two days ago a couple guys at espn got in a boatload of trouble when they got too cute with the jeremy lin phenomenon. the puns were bad enough but they used a racial slur to describe one of the lin's lesser performances for the new york knicks. a lot of people found it offensive, probably racist. they're probably right. what i find curious is how some

people i talked to are offended by derogatory terms for asians but not by the word redskin. folks, redskins is not a term of endearment anymore than the "n" word or any other racial or ethnic slur. from its inception and inclusion in our language it was meant to be an insult. what is fascinating is while redskin the word may be awful to some people redskin the player or redskins the team is loved by so many. there are people in this town who love the redskins more than their own spouse and are willing to tell you that in front of their spouse. they don't even think of the original connotation of the word. it is not toxic to them. they don't want to hear about it either. the word to them is a reference to something cherished. and that's all. it is not a subject for discussion about whether it ought to be changed. i don't know if it should or not be. but i'd rath another the be cussed out for raising a question as i was a couple days ago by a guy up on georgia

avenue. should have seen this dude. veins popping out. fists clenched just because of the question of the name change coming up. his was the kind of single minded attitude that mirrored george preston marshall that vile, evil man who once owned the team and swore there would never be a negro playing on his team. 50 years ago because of george preston marshall the redskins was the last team in the entire nfl to hire a black player. marshall wanted bobby mitchell who was that player to play not for old d.c. but for old dixie. 50 years later, do we really want to be the only team in the league with even a question about the appropriateness of our name? can't we at least talk about that without somebody wanting to start a fight for goodness' sake? i'm just saying. >> probably starting some fights right out there right now.
