ence. available in color. depend® for women is now peach. looks and fits like underwear. same great protection. depend®. good morning. great day. hello, everybody. thanks for starting your weekend with us. i'm angie goff. >> i'm chris gordon. february 25th. a developing story out of prince george's county where seven firefighter have been injured battling a house fire. it broke out in riverdale. one firefighter remains in critical condition, another in serious condition but with major burns. a third firefighter is hospitalized with broken ribs and four of the injured firefighters have been released from the hospital.

investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. >> we're also following two breaking news stories this morning. the first in montgomery county, where a pedestrian was hit wby car in aspen hills. police are not saying much about the accident. they have not said who the victim is or if the vehicle involved remains on scene. our breaking news story this morning is out of south africa, where nelson mandela is in the hospital. the former south african president is being treated for a stomach ailment. there is no word on his condition or if doctors know what's causing the issue. the 93-year-old mandela spent several days in the hospital last year with respiratory problems. we will have updates on both of these stories as more details become available.

our other big story is the wind. high gusts that blew out power last night and blew over a tree in maclean, virginia. who else to tell us more but meteorologist, chuck bell. >> good morning. did you have a nice friday night and early saturday so far? >> i heard what sounded like a jet engine. >> i slept right through it. >> through much of the afternoon, not much of a wind but once the front came through, the winds really started to pick up. it's scatter the clouds for now but we have a few more clouds before your saturday is done. a good looking day so far. it is chilly and winds will continue to whip around most of the day. temperatures 30s to 40s. the real cold air hasn't spilled in just yet. noticeably colder by this time.

>> better than a lump of coal. >> you're right. two military families in northern virginia are preparing to say good-bye to two marines killed in a helicopter crash. 37-year-old thomas and 28-year-old captain, michael quinn, both graduated from the naval academy and went on to become pilots. they were 2 of 7 marines killed in a helicopter crash in yuma, arizona, where training for development and deployment to afghanistan was taking place. raco had a wife and son and his parents said he was proud to serve his country. >> he loves being a marine, loved flying, loved serving his country. he died the way he want to live. >> captain quinn graduated from loudoun valley high school in virginia and had just gotten

engaged last month. his funeral will take place at arlington nags tional cemetery. all activity at fairfax county elementary schools are canceled this weekend because of a suspected nor row virus out-break, more than 100 were out and most complained of nausea and stomach pain. they will be thoroughly cleaned this weekend. health officials tell news4 cases tend to spike in winter months when people tend to spend most time inside closed quarters. the massage of maryland's same sex marriage bill will be capped off with a signing ceremony next week. the governor, martin o'malley said he will sign it this

evening. it faces a challenge from opponents who can force the measure on to a ballot allowing maryland residents to decides. if it goes on to a referendum and passes, the law would go into effect in january. bob mcdonnell say possible legal challenges caused him to push for an abortion bill. it would have required women to get a vaginal ultrasound before abortion. he then asked for amendment to require a less invasive ultra sound. he said he changed course after consulting with desperation and lawyers. >> there were many other amendments made including a very important clarification women not just be provided a still picture but also be provided a video ultrasound. that's very important for people that believe in the sanctity of human life that an ultrasound video be provided.

>> if passed, virginia would join seven states with laws mandating some form of pre-abortion ultrasound exam. now, virginia is close to having more influence on the board overseei ing constructionf metro's silver line at dulles airport. they both passed bills to seat two new board members on the metropolitan airport's authority. federal legislation recently increased the size from 13 members to 17. virginia gained two of the four additions and virginia and maryland each got one. each has to vote on changing the governing rules before the new members can be seated. phase one is expected to be finished next year. the governing board is expected to be taking contract bids on phase two soon. today, there will be a frenzy in malls in our area.

two good samaritans are being called heroes for pulling a woman to safety moments before her car was slammed. a security camera shows she makes a wrong turn onto a railroad tracks and two come to pull her to safety moments before that train plows into the car. no one was hurt thankfully but the car, as you saw, got smashed. a denver news anchor gave her first interview since being bitten by a dog on live tv. a quick warning, some people might find this video a little graphi graphic. >> happy valentine's day. >> oh! >> she received 70 stitches and a skin graft to her lips after that attack two weeks ago. she was injuring the firefighter who saved the dog the day before after he had fallen through a

welcome to ne"news4 today." i'm chris gordon. >> i'm angie goff. >> seven firefighters are in serious condition after battling a fire that happened around 9:00 last night. this was on the 57th avenue of riverdale heights. officials believe the seven firefighters fell through the first floor into the basement and suffered cuts and broken bones. two virginia families are mourning the loss of two marines killed in a helicopter cross in alexandra. they were two of seven service members who died in a training

president obama says the u.s. is willing to consider every tool available to stop the violence. at least 10 more are dead in renewed protest in afghanistan over the burning of korans at a u.s. military base. the anti-american demonstration started again after midday prayers on friday despite apologies from president obama. at least 20 people including two u.s. soldiers have been killed since the unrest began five days ago. the cop commander called on troops to resist the urge to avenge the deaths of those two americans. it is expected to be completed in the coming days. >> we at the department of defense regret and apologize for this incident. we are fully investigating it and learning from it and committing to ensuring such an incident will never happen

the son of the late senator, robert f. kennedy, is facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly fighting with nurses at a new york city hospital where his son was born. our sister station shows douglas kennedy attempting to take his three day old son, bo, for a walk in january. but nurses tried to stop him, saying kennedy wasn't allowed to take his newborn off the maternity ward floor. that's when things escalated with one nurse claiming he twisted her arm and another says that she was kicked and knocked to the ground. kennedy's attorney says it was any nurses. >> he was acting very quietly, politely, calmly. the only reason why anything

it's been a little more than six months since the magnitude 5.6 earthquake rattled the area. and there was a lot of damage. >> and at the washington cathedral, stonemasons are involved in a lengthy and costly repair process. we have a look at the tedious process. >> reporter: in this tiny workshop on the grounds of the national cathedral, skilled carvers have begun the intricate and tedious task of restoration. >> there's a lot to do. it can be daunting. >> reporter: shawn callahan is one of two carvers carefully restoring and recreating the

precious pieces of the cathedral damaged by last fall's earthquake. it's a daunting task. >> if we break it down to one stone at a time and just hope we can get there. >> reporter: workers have spent much of the past six months stabilizing the structure, removing loose and dangerous pieces and assessing the overall damage estimated in the tens of million, erecting scaffolding around the towers was a big part of the job. now, it's down to the details of repairing and replacing the beautiful and ornate stone work like these fennials. they will carve three new ones. each one will take months to complete. we're also involved in assessing what materials can be saved, what needs to be made from scratch, made new. we're still trying to put our arms around the size of this project. >> reporter: it will take many years to put back the pieces of this cathedral. for the masons and carvers, each

piece is personal. joe is the head mason. he and two stone carvers worked on it back in the '80s. >> it's definitely a labor of love for us. we, shawn, andy and i, we have been here since the 1980s. we helped construct part of the cathedral. our blood, sweat is in this building. >> reporter: despite the extent of the damage done by the earthquake, joe says he feels lucky it wasn't worse. >> if the earthquake had lasted two more seconds, we would have lost probably 50% more stone. >> reporter: pat lawson, news for washington. >> the cathedral did have an insurance plan but it did not include earthquakes. a new jersey team battli-- battling cancer won't get to take taylor swift to the music awards but says he is getting something better. >> h
