and hello everybody and welcome back. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer right here in storm center 4 after a beautiful monday it does look like things are going to change as we head into our tuesday and wednesday. current temperatures right now 61 at the airport. 59 in camp springs up toward college park and prince george's county coming in at 61 degrees. across the river over toward fairfax county reston at 59. hunting town in calvert county around 57. back to the west in toward warranton. how about a temperature there? 61. a beautiful evening out there right now but temperatures are going to go down tonight to a low of about 31 in manassas. 37 in washington. 33 in gaithersburg.
6:45 pm
it will be a cool night tonight. there could be frost out there once again as there was earlier this morning but fairly dry atmosphere so not too worried about that. tomorrow temperatures on the nice side. 55 in washington. 54 in manassas. these temperatures are about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than we were during the day today. but with the sunshine it's still about 5 degrees above average so not a bad day at all. then we get to wednesday. here is wednesday morning. 6:00. you can see the cloud cover making its way in here. i think the rain will hold off until around the noon hour and that's when we'll see the potential for heavy rain right around lunch time. watch what happens around dinner time, same deal. more rain. some areas could see half an inch to an inch of rain on wednesday but we need to see the rain and why not have it during the middle of the week? >> why not? so wasn't this trade deadline day or something like that for the caps? >> yeah. this is what we've been talking about for the past two weeks. >> yes. >> a major, major movement. i guess we were waiting for
6:46 pm
nothing. this is really a surprise to nick backstrom actually was put on a long-term injury list which opened up some caps space for a possible trade but capitals general manager george mcphee decided to stand pat. instead of chasing a big deal with the trade deadline in an act of desperation he bet on the players he has now hoping they'll be good enough to get the caps into the playoffs and beyond. tomas vokoun was the goaltender some thought could be traded if he chose to waive his no movement clause. vokoun was never asked to waive the clause and despite leaving practice early which raised some eyebrows with the trade deadline looming, vokoun is not going anywhere. now vokoun and company have roughly five weeks to get into playoff contention. >> it depends how we play. you know, sometimes we don't look so good.
6:47 pm
i think there's a lot of good players in this locker room and it just, you know, they got to play up to their capabilities. >> he wasn't the only one thought to be on the trading block. the veteran mike knuble has seen his role reduced lately and has been a healthy scratch in five of the last nine games. roman hamrlik passed the past three games and has been actively shopped according to reports. neither player requested a trade. we can now focus on what it will take to make the playoffs instead of wondering if they will be here. for george mcphee, not making a trade seems like an easy decision. >> we weren't interested in moving anyone out of here and we didn't. and we would have added something to the team if we thought it would make us better but it had to make us better and what transpired today really there wasn't anything there that would have been the right thing for our club. you know, we need the depth and good players. we like the players we have. i'd like us to continue to play the way we played the last little bit here and see if we

can make a difference. so gm to gm betting on a known quantity, what he has instead of bringing in something different which i think surprises a lot of people. it could be all or nothing because if they don't make the playoffs this year there is going to be major shakeups. he is either going to be the smartest man in the room or looking for something new. i'm curious to see what's going to happen. >> there's no trash on that team. there are guys -- just some professionals on that team. >> just not playing up to expectations or been healthy. could still happen. i'm betting on them. >> really. >> yes. i am. >> all right. >> they'll make the playoffs. >> wow. >> take my word. >> proclamation right there. >> me and joe namaith. >> the all star games have never turned out to be all that competitive. the best example is the nfl pro ball but yesterday's nba all-star game seemingly followed that script until the very end.
