where passengers had to slide down emergency shoochutes. riders sound off. why pete aat that admits it killed hundreds of animals in virginia. finchts, though, to take school shooting in ohio. one student dead, two others in critical condition right now, and the shooter is set to go to court tomorrow. wendy is following the new developments tonight. wendy. >> tonight we get the first look at the alleged shooter. he's identified at 17-year-old t.j. lane. witnesses describe him as silent and determined as he opened fire on a table full of classmates in the cafeteria. five of those students were shot, one was killed. the other four are in the hospital tonight. hundreds gathered outside for a candlelight vigil hoping to find relief and strength in the togetherness. while still shocked by the events that unfolded hours earlier. >> there was a lot of running and screaming. i heard a bunch of shots fired. >> he had no emotion on his

face. he was just shooting. >> if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple days, take that time. >> police say lane was chased from the building after the shooting by teachers, and he surrendered a few blocks from the school. he's not yet been charged but is scheduled to appear in juvenile court tomorrow. just minutes ago the family of the shooting suspect released aa statement. the lane family says in part they want to give their most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who passed. quote, this is something that could never have been predicted. classes have been canceled tomorrow. the grief counselors, as is usual, have been made available to students and their families. doreen. >> wendy reporting. thanks. a dramatic emergency landing tonight at newark international airport. the nose gear collapsed on the jet forcing the united express regional jet to land on its belly. passengers evacuated the plane by sliding down the emergency

wednesday night at henson elementary school. traffic lights in one of the busiest areas of the city will go dark tomorrow and the timing in the middle of the day is puzzling to a lot of people. we have the report. >> it's going to be a mess. >> reporter: she dreads tomorrow's commute in dupont circle. the district department of transportation will turn off the traffic lights starting around 10:00 a.m. >> i think 10:00 in the morning is a bit surprising and here it's 8:00 in the evening and we have a lot of traffic. >> the lights will be off for several hours while they upgrade the system with backup power to keep the traffic lights on during outages. officers will direct drivers. >> it would be smarter to pick aa time on a weekend or late, late evening. >> reporter: when we questioned d-dot this afternoon, they didn't have an answer. they said 10:00 is a good time because crews don't work overnight. >> the impact to motorists is negligible because the traffic control officers are there.

>> reporter: they recommend drivers take alternate routes p if you're concerned about delays. police are urging people who live in the frank cone yun air of fairfax county to be vigilant. that advice was given tonight at a community meeting prompted by a recent rash of burglaries. burglars have hit fooifl homes in the middle of the day. they have gotten away with jewelry, electric p in this cases and other valuables. >> peta is the acronym for people for the ethical treatment of animals. it's mission is to protect animals, but tonight they admit to killing hundreds of adoptable dogs and cats. a new report shows of the 2,000 dogs and the cats peta received at the animal shelter at norfolk, virginia last week 24 were aadopted, 34 were transferred and the others were ut niz euthanized. they used data collected from the virginia department of agriculture. a spokesperson says that

minute. >> thanks. another cruise ship is in trouble tonight in the indian ocean in an area infested with pirates. a second tugboat is making its way to the boat. the ship lost power today of a fire in the generator room. it is a sitting duck not far from the area frequented by pirates out of so malia. the fire comes just six weeks after another costa shipwrecked off the italian coast. 32 were killed. one of the two service members shot and killed over the weekend in afghanistan is from our area. army major robert marchant xwr and another senior officer were shot in the back of the head. the taliban claims responsibility saying they did it in retaliation for the burning of the kor aran at a u. base. he leaves behind a wife of 24 years and four children who all remember him with love.

>> the whole school lost a brother, and it's one of those bonds that can't be broken. >> the medical examiner has ruled the death from natural causes due to a blood clot that travelled to his lungs. the death of a 10-year-old girl after a school yard fight in california has now considered aa homicide. the coroner ruled tonight that joanna ramos died of blunt force trauma that resulted in a fistfight with another fifth grade girl. they say the two were fighting over a boy. police have identified the other girl involved. she's 11 years old. they have not filed any charges yet. take a look at this video out of sacramento, california. emergency crews transported two police officers to the hospital after a violent outburst by members of "occupy oakland." protesters threw cans and bottles at the officers as they escorted members. police arrested three

protesters, the injured officers are all expected to be okay. michael douglas is teaming up with the fbi to fight financial fraud on wall street. douglas stars in a few public service announcement that encourages people to report securities fraud and insider trading to the fbi. the public service announcement uses scenes from the 1987 movie "wall street," in which douglas played the role of a cheating executive named gordon gecko. gas prices are soaring right now, and every penny counts. how do you know you get the gas you're paying for? the news 4 i-team is on the job. tisha thompson finds out who is watching out for you. >> think you're watching every penny at the pump these days? >> many, many. probably thousands. >> you've got nothing on elizabeth conkey. every day she's on the road inspecting gas stations in maryland. >> all inspections are unannounced. >> for the state's department of

agriculture, and boy, can she the stop the meter on a dime on this case a penny. >> my greatest job skill is to stop at five gallons and ten gallons. >> she uses these specially calibrated containers. they look a lot like milk jugs. first she makes sure each pump starts and stays on zero for 30 seconds. >> i pump until this says five gallons, and then i read how much was actually dispensed. >> there is a tolerance if the pump dispenses too little or too much, she can shut it down. >> i do find errors. >> reporter: meters that keep rolling after you stop filling up can put a pump out of commission. >> we would like to check them once every year, but due to so many pumps versus so p many inspector it's once every two years. >> i'm here now because i had another child and gas prices are going up. >> kevin jones called after seeing inconsistency the at the

pump with his new car. >> you get, you know, 23 in a 20-gallon tank, you have to wonder. >> he has the same issue with his motorcycle. a 10 hoof gallon tank that holded 12 gallons of gas. >> with it being a machine it could be it's not indicate brated or off. >> to find out how often a pump in cited, we dug through hundreds of maryland's most recent inspections. in just montgomery and principle georges county along, 57% of stations had to be re-inspected for different violations. most were for small technical issues, but 12% remember cited for short changing customers. one of the worst is a rockville station that shorted drivers by almost two gallons, but it's not always bad for the driver. 16% were cited for giving more gas away than the pump showed. >> that's acceptable and approved. >> reporter: back in montgomery

the hard way what can happen when you park on thin ice. they were at an ice fishing contest in oshkosh, wisconsin. 36 vehicles broke through the ice on lake winnebago on saturday. that looks bad. several were salvaged. officials say the cars were parked too close together for the ice to hold their weight. a marine stationed in maryland credits karma with helping him win a jackpot. he was in navlz foster training a couple weeks ago and ended up at the penny slots. he won nearly $3 million. as for the karma, he recently volunteered to be a bone marrow donor for someone he doesn't know and probably will never meet. he was offered the chance to back out when they took him about the pain he might suffer. he said add he'd take a little pain to help save a life. a few days later he won na jackpot. >> wow. >> that would convince you it to believe karma or something.

hour. we'll see the wind shift a little bit, and we'll see the numbers go down. still nice and mild, though. 51 down there towards pax river and martinsburg. it's still nice and mild. the cool air doesn't make its way in just yet. storm 4 radar is clear through the day tomorrow and probably through this time tomorrow night. we'll see shower activity begin to make its way into the region. you don't see it here on the mid-atlantic view. you see this batch of clouds right here. that's the cold front that made it through here. that cold front is making its way through now will switch the winds around and bring in cooler numbers. look at the numbers just off to the west. 31 in pittsburgh, 33 in columbus after a high temperature of 58. they dropped 25 degrees over the last few hours, and that cooler air is settling on down. you will notice a difference tomorrow morning. you'll notice a difference tomorrow. high temperatures tomorrow about 10 degrees cooler than today. with plenty of sunshine we make

it to 55 degrees which is still 5 degrees above average. plenty of sun today with that front moving through. tomorrow it's partly sunny. it will be mild so you need the jacket bh you step outside. by lunch looking okay out there. then comes wednesday, and here's a pretty powerful storm. this storm has a lot of moisture with it along with i frontal boundary and a warm front. we're on that axis point, and that means we have the potential to see good rains, maybe a half inch up to an inch of rain. that storm is a fairly fast mover. then it moving right on through, and thursday we're back in the clear and also back in the warm temperatures. mostly clear and a chilly start tomorrow. 30 in the suburbs to about 37 inside the city. as we move through the day tomorrow, we see sunshine and a few more clouds than today, but still nice weather. 51 to 55 degrees as the winds shift to the northwest. it will be breezy on thursday
