because you can't do anything, you're in a helpless situation. >> more tragic news in the small town of chardon, ohio. we're getting word that another student has died from his injuries. school officials have to figure out how to move everybody on as the student body grieves. good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. we begin with more heartache for that ohio school rocked by the gunfire. a third high school student wounded in that attack has now died. >> the 17-year-old accused of gunning down his classmates is in the courtroom right now for his first court appearance. as jay gray reports. the big question here remains why this happened. >> for the first time since the attack, the alleged it gunman appears in juvenile court. this community can't hide the pain and emotion left in the wake of the horrific rampage he's accused of here. >> it's hard to fathom he would do such a thing. what i was trying to deal with

yesterday, i was sitting on a bus with a boy who had the intent to kill people. >> most every morning students waited in the cafeteria for the bus ride to a vocational or alternative campus. yesterday, though, was anything but normal. >> we have an active shooter at the high school. >> reporter: five students gunned down, three, daniel, russell and demetrius fatally wounded. two others fighting for their lives in area hospitals. to honor the fallen and support the injured, hundreds of red ribbons have been wrapped around almost everything in this small town. most here can't tie together how or why it happened. all of the schools are closed. a team of grief counselors will be in place as classes resume on friday, to help work through the emotions that are sure to surface for so many. >> we have to come together as a community. and i think even if i'm not

ready to go back into the facility itself, i need to be with my friends, i need to be with with the community and we need to help each other as best we can. >> help they will need for a long time here. that help will begin tomorrow with grief counselors in place, as facultity and staff return to campuses here, they will remain in place on thursday when parents and students visit the campuses. in chardon, ohio, jay gray, news 4. >> as far as a possible motive, some students say lane was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied, others are disputing that. the correredibility a key witness in a murder for hire case is being called into question. this 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in a park in june 2005. two men are on trial in her murder. mcdonald abraham testified for the prosecution in the case today 37 he said he paid jarvis tyler $600 in cash and weed to

kill seton. defense attorneys for tyler say abraham is the one responsible for the murder, and is only cooperating to get a lighter sentence. after a day in the dark, the lights are finally back on at dupont circle. the traffic lights at the busy intersection were out for several hours today while crews made some improvements in the area. just moments ago, the lights began functioning once again. megan mcgrath reports, officers were on hand to try to keep traffic flowing. >> reporter: dupont circle, it's a busy place with a complex traffic pattern. there's congestion on a good day. but turn off the traffic signals and things can get pretty dicey. >> it's ridiculous. >> reporter: ddot is updating the traffic signals, adding a backup power system so they'll work even when the electricity goes out. but to make the change, crews had to take all the traffic lights offline. the work began around 10:00

here in new jersey last night. the faa says a united express flight was trying to land when its front landing gear got stuck and wouldn't deploy. the pilot used the mainlanding gear to safely touch down the plane, it then slid about 200 feet on its nose before it came to a stop. passengers had to leave the plane using emergency chutes. afterwards one said i thought it was the end. airport body scanners are safe for even the most frequent travelers, that's according to a new report from the department of homeland security's inspector general. the ig says independent testing shows a passenger would have to be screened 17,000 times a year to reach an annual radiation dose that could pose a health risk. the report recommends that machine operators get more extensive training. critics of the report say the i.g. investigators used existing radiation assessments rather than conducting their own

independent tests. prince georges county members want leslie johnson to pay a fine before she heads off to prison next month. she would have to pay a $15,000 fine before she begins her one year one day sentence. she admitted last year to trying to flush a $100,000 check down the toilet and stuffing $80,000 inside her bra. prosecutors made a similar request before her husband jack johnson reported to prison. that was denied. we're following a developing story right now out of the virginia senate in richmond. senate lawmakers have passed the revised ultrasound abortion bill. it requires women undergo a noninvasive ultrasound exam in order to get an abortion. the measure passed by a vote of 21-19. if now heads to the governor, who has said he will sign it. the virginia senate has killed a proposal that would have repealed the mandate ta

costa and parent company carnival, starting with a deadly virus. norovirus outbreaks and now this. but drifting inned dark, waiting on deck for help to arrive, was not supposed to be part of the package. the problem has been getting out to the ship to help it. a helicopter was able to get out there this morning and bring food and communications equipment. it is now being towed, but it won't be able to get to the nearest island that's big enough to handle all those passengers until thursday. just this morning the company said it was sincerely sorry for the inconvenience. back to you. big celebration planned for the arrival of the space shuttle "discovery" at its new home here at the smith sewn yum. the shuttle will be on display soon near dulles airport.
