system is called metro alerts, designed to give both bus and rail customers up to the minute updates about service changes and disruptions. bus riders will be able to receive information on up to four bus lines. rail riders can get advisories for the four stations they use the most. the alerts for rail will be available in short 140 character texts or longer more detailed e-mails. three students have now died after the tragic school shooting in ohio. two remain in the hospital tonight. the teens were shot at chardon high school in suburban cleveland yesterday morning when a student opened fire in the school cafeteria. the gunman, t.j. lane made his first court appearance today in juvenile court. lane said he picked the students at random, didn't know any of them. he was placed on a 15 day detention for now. a hearing was set for march sixth. >> on friday march second all of our schools will be open for business. certainly not as usual.

certainly we have plans in place. i want to assure parents. i want to assure our faculty, and most importantly our students that you'll be safe when re-entering our program. prosecutors said lane admitted to firing ten shots inside the school. we have a developing story from the pentagon today. a new pentagon report finds that partial remains of 9/11 victims were sent to landfills after they could not be identified. the remains came from the attacks at the pentagon and shanksville, pennsylvania. the remains were first cream mated and then given to a biomedical waste disposal contractor who incinerated them and took them to the landfill. a former fairfax county band teacher was found guilty of soliciting sex online from a 14-year-old boy. 43-year-old michael cook entered a plea deal in court today. he was arrested at his home in

centreville in august. court records indicated former band director at robinson secondary elementary school asked for oral sex from an undercover cop. his sentencing is set for may. there are republican primaries today in michigan and arizona, all eyes are on michigan where mitt romney was born and raised. the race was tight and a win from rick santorum could badly damage the romney campaign. michigan's primary is open. democrats are allowed to vote. a robo call on behalf of the san forum campaign urges democrats to vote for him to punish romney for opposing the auto bailout. romney calls it, a dirty trick 37. >> we don't want the democrats to choose who they think is the easiest person to run against. >> and say no to the dirty tricks of a desperate campaign. >> president obama's re-election campaign is asking democratic voters just to stay home. for his part, ron paul will watch those elections returns

from northern virginia tonight, he's in springfield right now. paul and mitt romney are the only two republican candidates on the ballot for the virginia primary. that's next tuesday, newt gingrich and santorum tried but failed to qualify, virginia does not permit write-in votes in primaries. the ballot rules are considered the toughest in the country. it was a long time coming on wall street, the dow closed above the 13,000 mark for the first time since may of 2008. if was four months before the start of the financial crisis. today's finish puts the dow less than 1200 points away from an all time high. after nearly six hours in the dark, the lights are back on at dupont circle. the department of of transportation cut power from traffic signals today to make some necessary upgrades. tom sherwood is live at a busy thoroughfare. the traffic control officers had their work cut out for them.

>> reporter: on a normal day, dupont circle could be a nightmare. so we weren't sure what to expect when all the traffic lights were turned off for hours. that was the sound of the day. all day at busy dupont circle where for hours all 110 traffic lights and walk signs went dark on purpose. >> the short term inconvenience of today is to solve a long term issue. what this does is put battery backup power in place, so when the signalses when the power cuts off, the signals keep working and for the motorists and the pedestrians it's seamless, they don't notice the power web with the out. >> the little white backup batteries are an effort to avoid the chaos and confusion in the snowstorms when the power goes out like january last year. >> it really will help with traffic in the city. particularly if power goes out during rush hour, which can

chesapeake bay, look at annapolis, only 49. a little cooler along the water, the rest of us seeing a nice afternoon. nothing as far as rain is concerned right now, that will not be the case tomorrow. i do, however, think we'll get right on through the 5:00 and 7:00 hour tomorrow without a hitch. i don't expect any rain during the rush hour tomorrow. that's good news. i'll show you how much rain i think we will get coming newspaper a minute. wendy? >> all right. he says he paid a man $600 in drugs and cash to murder a pregnant 17-year-old. >> today mcdonald abraham took the stand as a prosecution witness against his codefendant in the murder of stacy seton, the buoy teenager was found shot to death behind her home in june 2005. darcie spencer joins us from upper marlboro well more on this. >> reporter: he was a key witness for the prosecution, and the defense went after him right away, very aggressively saying that he sold his testimony and basically just too save his own skin. now, the defense again went

after him very aggressively in this case, and he also had some discrepancies in his testimony in terms of what time he was at certain locations. but that's kind of become a pattern, after all this crime happened seven years ago. mcdonald abraham, who has confessed to hiring a man to kill stacy seton in june 2005 took the stand to pin the murder on this plan, jarvis tyler, who's now on trial for allegedly being the trigger man. abraham's credibility immediately came into question by fiehler's attorneys who pointed abraham's testimony is a plea deal that could land him in prison for as few as 15 years. defense attorney william brennen pointed out that abraham bragged to a friend that he got a sweet deal after turning down offers from prosecutors four 30, 25 and 20 years in prison. the reality is, you cut a deal for 15 years in prison, correct?

>> correct. abraham is changing his story. in interviews with police in 2005 and 2009, he said abraham lied and said he had nothing to do with stacy's murder. in 2005, you thought lies would set you free. abraham, yes, sir. he also took issue with brennan characterizing him as a murderer. i told somebody to do it, but i didn't pull the trigger, i'm not a murderer, i didn't kill her. abraham said he paid jarvis tyler $400 and two bags of weed for killing stacy. stacy set him up by introducing him to chris smith who admitted on the stand he broke into abraham's apartment and stole drugs and a gun. stacy was not involved in the robbery. stacy's mom is here for the trial. >> it's hard. you don't know what goes through the people's finds, witnesses minds. it's difficult.

>> reporter: good friends lauren and katherine met online a few years ago, not because they had mutual facebook friends but because they both had a rare heart condition. their disease is called scad, the inner layer of the heart artery tears away from the outer wall. >> i remember laying on the cath table and the cardiologist looked like he was about to die. >> they said, it's very rare, you're lucky to have survived you're very brave. and they didn't really have any other information to give me on it. >> laura and katherine turned to the internet, the only resource available was an online chat group. after a few years, that chat room turned into the largest group of scad survivors ever identified. they decided to bring the survivor stories to the attention of the mayo clinic and push for more research. >> i had this patient coming and saying, and challenging and laying down the gauntlet, what are you doing?

i basically felt like i had to say, i'm going to do something about it. >> mayo clinic designed a study. >> this was truly patient initiated research where they came forward and got this research off the ground. >> i felt like this was my job to get the research going and to see it through. >> there's no shortage of participants. >> we're finding more women joining our group every day. and we just keep pointing them to the studies that are ongoing right now and encouraging them to participate. >> turning an online chat group to a catalyst for research. after conducting research on scad, doctors now know that 70% of these cases are in women and one third of those appear to be related to pregnancy. more studies are planned to determine if genetics are playing a role in this heart condition at all. we know those energy drinks can give us a boost, how much is too much when it comes to these buzzed up beverages?

a 14-year-old girl died of caffeine toxicity after she drank two large energy drinks. some doctors are warning that too much of a toxic ingredient in these drinks could be dangerous, even deadly. doreen gentzler has the story about energy drink dangers tonight at 11:00. new warnings tonight for a popular group of cholesterol lowering drugs, the fda is adding safety warnings to statens because of memory loss and elevated blood sugar. statens are prescribed to nearly 32 million americans. accord together fda, most problems related to memory loss were generally not serious and went away after patients stopped taking the drug. we had another lovely day, but we're going to -- now we have to water the place a bit. >> that's very well said, wendy. we do need the water. we're well below average by

about two and a quarter inches. we need to see some rain, a lot of things starting to bloom outside, very early because of the lack winter like temperatures this rain is going to help some things out there a little bit. right now, look at this, a pretty nice shot, clouds trying to stream on through the area, not too bad. you have some high cirrus clouds there. the temperature right now, 54 degrees under mostly sunny excise. winds right now at the north-northeast at 7 miles per hour. it's a gorgeous yeah noon, and temperatures are 10 degrees below where they were yesterday. yesterday's highs, 64 in the d.c. area, 54 in d.c., 57 in manassas. 60 down toward charlottesville, 56 toward fredericksburg. current temperature in maryland is 50 degrees. don't expect any rain over the next 12 hours or so, but after that 12th hour, and we're talking about 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning, that's when we can start to see more of that

rain move in. it's all because of this storm system move in. this storm is going to be a monster storm for portions of the country. the great lakes could see six to 12 inches of snow, even up toward portions of new england, 6 to 12 inches of snow too. for us, it's too warm for us this winter, it's going to be all rain. mild across the region today with partly to mostly sunny skies, we'll see that move on through. a warm front will move through, that comes through early tomorrow morning, i think the rain will hold off until about the 9:00 hour, the rush hour looks okay, but then around 9:00, 10:00, the rain will move in quickly, i think some of it could be heavy at times as we move on through the morning hours, we get a little bit of a break during the afternoon, and then another front moves, in this time a cold front moves through, that cold front will continue to usher out that rain, it will, however, not usher in any colder air. we get warm behind this cold front. temperatures on thursday could be right back in the mid-60s if

imprezza made the list. the imprezza is a room my sedan. the top family hauler went to the siena v-6. it's the only minivan that has at least average reliability. you can view the entire list on our website, nbcwashington.com/top cars. the full report will be available in the april issue of consumer reports magazine. it's time to file your taxes for 2011. but let's rewind for a minute. the irs is looking for folks who did not file their taxes for 2008. that's right, the irs says 1 million people who did not file 2008 returns because maybe they made too little money are due refunds totalling more than $1 billion. but time is running out. in order to collect the money, a return for 2008 must be filed no later than tuesday april 17th. nearly 60,000 people around the d.c. metro area are eligible for the refunds.

the median potential refund more than $600. taxpayers seeking a 2008 refund may have their checks held if they have not filed for 2009 and 2010. think about it. we heard consumers complain about bank fees, i have anyway. a new study shows consumers have taken their business elsewhere. a study released by jd power and associates finds nearly 10% increase in new customers in the last year. fees are the main reasons customers stopped for a new primary bank. they're going for small banks and credit unions. >> and a lot of the smaller banks -- >> they're merging, people are getting used to the rules. >> they are also advertising they don't have fees. >> if you're angry with your fees, it's easier to switch

students at a manassas elementary school have plenty of pride. they're the first school in the county to have a band. jewelry carrie takes in the sights and sound. >> reporter: it's a big night for a debut of sorts at york shore elementary school in manassas. the tunes are still pretty basic, but until a few months ago, these 4th and 5th graders had never touched an instrument. now they make up the first elementary school band ever in the prince william county schools. the principal was inspired when he learned about a program that uses classical music to improve the lives of poorer children. >> we thought it would spark

them to come to school, when they went to middle school, they would have a leg up on some of those children that get private lessons. >> the fund-raising began to buy baritones, flutes and trumpets. a local car dealer kicked in $5,000. and more came from grants sean private donations, the $20,000 collected meant instruments and music for 35 kids. they held a lottery for the spots, 90 students entered. ariana was one of the lucky ones selected. >> i got off the bus, i was excited to tell my mom. >> the students learn their instruments and practice after school three days a week. homework comes first. >> your instrument goes home today. >> the music teachers teamed up to tackle the challenge. >> you see them from not knowing how to put it together to what they're doing tonight and it's amazing. >> reporter: baritone player russell robinson remembers the first time the whole group played together after each

board told us why she nominated her former boss. he's dedicated to helping educate african-americans in technology fields. a restaurant in herndon, virginia closed its doors for good. they served their final meals over the weekend after 37 years in town. the owner says the restaurant is a victim of the bad economy, and the deteriorating building, the mexican food restaurant was known for its homemade salsa. he promises to reveal the ingredients now that the store is closed. a couple months ago everyone was tebowing. but after the oscars, everyone is now jolieing. imitating angelina jolie's front leg that was front and center on the red carpet. and now tumblr is flooded with people copying that pose. some people are posting pictures

a charity run by tarek salahi has settled with the state of virginia after a multiyear investigation. virginia attorney general announced today that the journey for the cure foundation will pay $32,500 in penalties and salahi must personally pay $2500. the charity made false stamtzs and solicited donations without being registered with the state. they're also accused of misleading donors about how donations are spent. and now we talk about some gum, chewing gum, and apparently kids are not the only ones getting rid of it when they're not supposed to. >> it's creating a sticky situation all over our area. from sidewalks to schools. news 4's chris gordon has our story. >> reporter: wood row wilson

people there a lot. i just kind of all fit well, and it's getting closer to spring training, i started getting itchy. i said, give the nationals a call, let them know i'm interested. we did that rizzo was great and receptive, he said, let's do this. it's it. >> it's been feast or famine for brad lidge over the last three years, when healthy, he's been one of the game's best. more often than not, he's been nursing injuries. the nationals bullpen appears strong. it has storen who had more than 40 saves last season, but a healthy lidge could certainly make the unit one of the premiere bullpens in all of baseball. >> they want me to set up obviously, they want me to take some of the burden off those two guys. kind of make it easier for them. i think they also know if he needs a night off, i can go in there and close and i feel confident about my ability to close the games. >> of course for the nationals to make the playoffs, the measuring stick in their
