more than 100 miles per hour on the belt way and police gave her a warning. some rain on the radar. we'll tell you when it will get here. a warning for parents after a local teenager dies from caffeine toxicity after too many energy drinks. we begin with two wins for mitt romney, and the problem is his sweep is not as convincing as some of his supporters would like, and three other candidates are joining him for super tuesday. steve has the report from michigan. >> reporter: mitt romney had to win michigan or face the collapse of his campaign, and he did win. after losing the lead and then gaining it back. >> we didn't win by a lot, but we won by enough and that's all that counts. i'm going to deliver on more jobs, less debt and smaller government. we have to hear that day in and day out. >> he went 2 for 2. he gets all 29 of arizona's delegates. arizona's primary was winner-take-all, not michigan's primary today. so rick santorum wins delegates

in michigan, and he claimed tonight he won more. >> a month ago they didn't know who we were, but they do now. >> reporter: santorum vows it to fight on into super tuesday. that's when ron paul hopes to grab delegates. that's when newt gingrich makes his stand next tuesday in georgia, must win for him. georgia is gingrich's home state, and that's why romney, born and raised in michigan, had to win tonight. i'm steve handlesman, nbc news detroit. virginia is among the states holding primaries on super tuesday. ron paul is already in virginia. he watched tonight's election returns from the hotel in springfield. paul, along with mitt romney, are the only two candidates on the ballot in virginia. newt gingrich and rick santorum tried, but they failed to qualify. new developments to the huge fire that sent seven firefighters to the hospital last week.

we're live at the house where the flames broke out. >> reporter: we're at the house, and we learn that the other firefighter, one of two who was in critical condition, is now back home. that other firefighter, kevin o'toole is still recovering. let's roll video to show you the latest developments with this story. now, ethan is supposed to speak to the media tomorrow. the other fighter, kevin o'toole is in the burn unit. tonight a firefighter told us this investigation looks, quote, troubling and they're expected to tell us the cause of the fire tomorrow during a news conference. that fire broke out shortly after 9:00 last friday in this abandoned one-story home. a rush of air from the rear of the house created a fire ball injuring those seven firefighters. back out here live. you're looking at a live picture of the house. you can see all the damage inside, and we'll bring you latest details tomorrow as they become available on our website and twitter #nbcwashington. live in riverdale heights, news

4. a sea of candlelight did little to lighten the somber mood in chardon, ohio. there were tears, hugs and prayers but still very few answers. earlier today suspect t.j. lane made his first court appearance. he arrived wearing a bulletproof vest and sat with his hands in his lap and his jaw clenched as prosecutors recounted the shooting. they say he chose his victims at random. >> this is not about bullying our drugs. this is someone who is not well and i'm sure in our court case will prove that to all of your desires and make sure justice is done in the county. >> one of the victims used to live in the district as a child. his family released a statement saying he was a happy young man who loved life. two other victims are still in the hospital tonight. the average speed on the

daytona 500 speedway is 130 miles per hour. a council member from prince georges county was recently clocked at 105. the difference is she was on the beltway, and when cops caught up with her she was begin a warning. jackie benson has our report. >> reporter: sources tell news 4 that prince georges county council member karen toles that represents an area was driving a county suv an estimated 105 miles per hour on the belt way near branch avenue the afternoon of february 22nd. though sources say an officer followed her onto an exit and two lights before he could catch up with her. police confirmed she was given a ticket for an unsafe lane change, $90, but only a written warning for speeding. that does not sit well with her constituents. >> it's wrong. nobody is supposed to be speeding like that on the beltway. >> if i'm out there doing the speed limit, i'd get jail time because that's over the speed limit. >> reporter: in a written

statement she said i was leaving a meeting and was late for my next appointment. i consider moving violations serious matters and i regret the incident. i intend to pay the appropriate fine for these traffic violations. i spoke to officers from several other jurisdictions. they said it's not only unusual for not getting a speeding ticket but in many areas it's an arrestable offense. really nice out there today, but as we -- as we -- >> yep. >> did you get that? >> i got it. >> really nice out there today, but it's all about to change. we could see something for the first time in four years. help me out, doug. >> i think longer than four years. we're talking about leap day rain. we saw rain four years ago, but we have not seen thunderstorms on a leap day in quite some time. we have thunderstorms that could be out there, and not just that. this is a monster storm that's making its way our way right now.

blizzard conditions up towards the dakotas towards minneapolis. it could be their biggest snow of the season, and you can see the trailing cold front with some severe weather and even a couple of tornado watches down to the central part of the country. it is all moving our way. we will not stee any of that snw or severe weather. what we are going to see is the potential for heavy rain during the day tomorrow. it will move in quickly. i'll show you when it moves in and when it moves out. what comes next as we head towards the weekend in my forecast in a minute. tonight a large crowd lined up to ask questions and make their opinions known about a proposed casino in prince georges county. the county executives want to bring a $1 billion las vegas style gambling and entertainment facility. he said it could create 35,000 jobs and generate millions of dollars in tax revenue. some said county residents should vote on whether it happens. today a judge delayed two trials involving the deadly met row rail crash in 2009.

two families filed wrongful death lawsuits. both were set to go on trial in march. however a judge delayed one case until october and the other until november. the families of the seven other victims killed in the crash settled their cases out of court. outrage over the mishandled remains reached a boiling point today when it was revealed 9/11 victims were among those that ended up in a landfill in virginia. wendy is here with more. >> they found the partial remains of victims in the pentagon attack and the downing of united flight 93 in shanksville, pennsylvania wound up in a landfill in virginia. this came to light amid an ongoing investigation into the practices and procedures at the military's mortuary's air force base. they found the remains of the war dead was mishaneddl or improperly disposed of. the investigation found that the practice of sending cremated remains started just after the 9/11 attacks.

partial remains from the pentagon and shanksville were cremated at that mortuary when they couldn't be identified. they were then incinerated by a biomedical waste disposal krftor before they wound up at the landfill. this outraged family members of fallen troops whose remains were similarly disposed. >> it's aa pat thettic and sad a love of people at dover if they had any integrity at all would step down from their positions effective immediately. >> i don't know how extensive it was, and it was only the victims that went through the mortuary. >> how many of these were there? do you know? >> i don't know. >> in a statement white house officials say they're deeply concerned about this report. it says the president strongly supports pentagon efforts to reform the mortuary so nothing like this ever happens again. jim, doreen. >> thanks, wendy. tonight a controversial bill requiring women in virginia to get an ultrasound before an abortion.

that bill is on the verge of becoming law. the virginia senate approved the bill today by a vote of 21-19. the revised bill requires a less invasive procedure than the original bill. it also makes an exception for victims of rape and incest. the house now needs to approve the amended version of the bill, and then governor bob mcdonald says he will sign it. >> i'm a pro-life governor. i've been pro-life my entire life, and i think the more we do to embrace a culture of life in our society, the better off our world will be. >> critics call it an unprecedented invasion into women's rights. two democrats did vote in favor of bill. among nthem senator charles cogen. at the u.s. capitol a stone was unveiled. it pays tribute to the slaves that help build the capitol. they say the slaves worked 12 hours a day six days a week. the government rented the slaves at a rate of $5 per person per

month. news about apple. analysts predict apple will unveil the third generation ipad at an invitation only event scheduled next wednesday. apple wouldn't confirm anything, but it sent shares soaring to $535. among the features expected on the new ipad are clearer screen, faster processor and even better camera and 4 g come patibility. >> new technology is everywhere these days, and now it helps to keep the peace between divorced parents as more and more judges send couples online to keep them out of court. we have a report. >> the divorce was no walk in the park. >> it was really chaotic, and it started during the separation. unfortunately, we were highly conflicted, and that just made things a lot more challenging.

>> reporter: like many divorcees she found co-parenting complicated, which is why more courts are turning to the internet to help, ordering parents to use online software to keep the peace after the split. >> this is easter weekend? >> yes. >> the e-mails going back and forth were getting nasty and it was a he said she said thing. so this seemed to quell and calm that down a little bit. >> reporter: this judge mandates the use of online technology in his divorce cases. >> that takes all the mystery out of when they used to come to court and said, he said this or she said this and the other party denies it it. now it's right there in black and white. >> reporter: this judge is one of many using online tools. a divorce mediator says it's a growing trend keeping families out of the courtroom. >> when the couples i work with are a much younger demographic, and they like the technology. >> reporter: early says at least 44 states and the district of

columbia have co-parents forced online. one says it's seen a 30% increase in demand for services in the last six months. in her d.c. home, she found success with another program called our family wizards. from calendars to vaccinations to money matters the software records everything and there's an iphone app. it averages about $100 per parent per year, so it's affordable for those forced to use it by a judge. jim. a new report out tonight by the federal government claims that full-body scanners are safe for air travelers. according to the department of homeland security inspector general someone has to be screened 7,000 times a year to surpass the acceptable reading of radiation. they did issue recommendations including one that calls on calibrations to be conducted consistently and that they be documented.

reading the cans of popular energy drinks these days, you might see promises of three times the buzz or charged up intensity. what you may not find on the label is just how much caffeine is really in one of those drinks. now some doctors are warning that drinking too many energy drinks are dangerous even deadly as the family of a teenager in maryland found out. >> she was upstairs watching a movie with her boyfriend, and he came running down and said, there's something wrong with anise. >> she exhaled funny, loudly, and then she went back a little bit making noises. >> that was the last time 14-year-old an si e would spend at home with her loved ones in maryland. >> it was horrible. i mean, no other parent should ever have to go through that. >> her mother says she suffered a severe reaction after drinking two large energy drinks in it 24 hours. she was rushed to the hospital that day, but she never regained

consciousness and was later pronounced dead. her cause of death, cardiac arrythmia due to caffeine toxicity. according to the autopsy report she had a pre-existing mitral valve prolapse, a common heart condition where one of the valves doesn't work as well as it should. her mother said she was screened regularly and never given caffeine restrictions. this cardiologist says some energy drinks are stoeld in larger sizes and therefore have much higher levels of after teen than the average cup of coffee or soda, but it's tough to know how much because not all the drinks list the amount of caffeine on their labels. the one na do give the amount per serving, not what's in the whole can which can contain as many as three servings. >> how many people would spread an open can over three different days? >> wendy says her daughter drank two of the 24-ounce monster energy drinks, a total of six

servings. while monster doesn't list the amount of caffeine in its products, mayo found it contains 80 milligrams of caffeine per serving, meaning she ingested 480 milligrams total, the equivalent of five eight-ounce cups of copies or 14 sodas. the american academy of pediatrics recommends adolescents have no more than 1,000 grams of caffeine per day. >> because of their size they have a higher chance of toxicity because the amount in their body mass is greater than that of a larger person. >> her family and friends are still in shock about her sudden death, but her mother is also angry. she thinks these energy drinks need to be regulated. >> i've seen kids about five or six years old walking around with those. >> the fda does not regulate the amount of caffeine in energy drinks or who can purchase them.

in a statement the american beverage association said, energy drink ingredients, including caffeine and their labels, comply with all fda safety requirements. a spokesman for monster energy company said, as a company, we vehemently deny that drinking two cans of monster energy by itself can cause a death from caffeine toxicity. two 16-ounce cans of monster energy drinks contain less or a similar amount of caffeine than one 16-ounce cup of filtered coffee from the leading coffee house. by calculation, essentially the same ratio would hold true for two 24-ounce cans of monster versus a similarly sized cup of brewed coffee. >> she was beautiful inside and outside. >> for anise's loved ones, they want to see a change in the way energy drinks are sold. >> it could be somebody else's daughter or son. >> today would have been her 15th birthday. the american beverage association says it's taking

steps to keep people informed about energy drinks and caffeine through a number of voluntary guidelines, which have been adopted by the coca-cola company, dr. pepper, snapple group, pepsico and red bull. there's something sticky even icky threatening the $100 million renovation at woodrow wilson high school. gum is carelessly tossed away on school grounds. the principal sent a letter to parents urging student to respect the school. cleaning gum off sidewalks and floors can cost $200 to $10,000 depending on the size of the job and how much gum there is there. a maryland marine is one of the our area's newest millionai millionaire. he hit the $3 million jackpot playing slots in las vegas earlier this month. he was in nevada for a training mission and decided to take a detour and it sure paid off. >> my friends were around me, and when it stopped on the

winter. we're going to get it during the day tomorrow, though. that's a good thing. we need some of that. we do not want to start off on a dry note. we were very dry last year through the middle of summer, and we'd rather not have it this year. a low of 40 degrees, both well above the average. we only saw three days below average the entire month of february. last year we saw ten days, more than a third of days in february below average. this year is a different story. a very warm month and it was a great day today. 44 degrees right now. winds out of the south-southwest at 35 miles per hour. temperatures are falling down. they won't fall farther saturday of cloud cover. 36 in frederick right now, 36 in winchester, culpepper at 34 degrees. there's no rain right now across the area, but that will change in about the next 12 hours, and 12 hours from now i expect the heaviest rain to move through the area. you can see a little bit of a

front trying to move through to the north. none is actually hitting the ground, but it is cloud cover making its way through. here's one batch of rain. this is the first batch that moves through overnight tonight, and then we'll get into this batch. this is the frontal boundary, and you can see some big-time thunderstorms here. 80-mile-per-hour winlds and golf ball-sized hail. up towards minneapolis and points to the north, blizzard warnings. had this is a monster of a storm. again, it's not a winter-type storm. this is an april or may type storm at the end of the february. for us it will be all rain. we saw the mild air today. you see the warm front and cold front coming through. in between our temperatures rise during the afternoon into the evening hour. at least to begin with, we're in for a little bit of a cold rain. then very warm air come inning during the day on thursday. yes, some snow back to the west, but the same winds that bring snow back there help us warm up into the low to mid-60s and even

the upper 60s across parts of the area. 7:30 still dry around the metro air, and here comes the rain at 10:30, 11:00 tomorrow afternoon. we see a break and see the cold front come through. 6:30 tomorrow night we look okay around rush hour tomorrow evening. here's the heavier rain once again, and this is where we could see thunderstorm activity and maybe some strong winds. we have to watch out for that, too. tomorrow morning starting off dry, but that rain makes its way towards the area. 34 to 40 degrees inside the region. tomorrow afternoon, rain, some heavy at times with possible thunder and rather breezy, too. it's a cool rain to start. on thursday 69 degrees, 60 on friday. rain move inniing in late frida early saturday and then maybe a chance for light snow on sunday. don't worry about that. that is almost next to nothing, and we will have the latest on
