drivers need to be rescued from their cars. >> the rain is part of a huge system devastating communities from kansas to tennessee. death tolls still climbing tonight from all the tornados. >> live in missouri where some of the significant damage can be found. we'll show you all the impact of the rain here. >> first, we go to doug kammerer with what we can expect. >> we have areas of moderate to heavy rain making its way through the area, and some of the same areas that have been hit hard across the region today. the weather making its way into montgomery county, and another area of heavy rain moving into falk ear county. part of this area, the same area, very heavy rain throughout the afternoon, there's still a couple strong storms through west virginia. we're not quite done with the rain just yet. some locations picking up one to two inches of rain, including the washington airport at 1.43 inches, toward gaithersburg.

1 3/4 inches of rain, where we've had the biggest problem from this. flood warnings have been cancelled, we still have a flood watch in parts of the area. shem shemary stone has more. >> reporter: it's been a dangerous night for some drivers here in northern montgomery county. we're at captain john's station. water crews are ready to go. it's been a busy night for them already. two cars got stuck in standing water at barnesville road and baltimore road along with barnesville and peach tree road. the drivers tried to plow throughed water and it flooded out their cars. people are also advised to stay away from streams and creeks. >> turn around, don't drawn. if you have water across the roadway, an interstate, a

backroad, hard paved road, just stop, don't drive through it. >> reporter: now, officials say even a small amount of water could overtake a car or suv. live here in potomac maryland, shemary stone news 4. >> the impact of the storms is muchp more severe further to the south of us. three people confirmed dead in tennessee, after violent weather tore through the state this evening. officials say high winds tore roofs off of buildings, caused homes to collapse and ripped down a number of trees. they say hail the size of ping-pong balls was also reported. in the middle of the country and in the middle of the damage, jay gray live in harrisburg, illinois. jay? >> reporter: doreen, yeah, this is perhaps one of the toughest areas taking one of the toughest hits. there are reports of as many as 20 twisters touching down throughout the evening and into

the early mornings, ripping apart communities like this one. and there's a big concern that even more dangerous weather could be on the way here. the violent attack happened overnight. shatters across five states. >> the windows web with the out just like a big shotgun went off. >> reporter: at least 20 funnel clouds touched down through the night and in the morning. shredding communities. >> i opened up the door and the whole nieighborhood was gone. >> they're devastated they lost one member of the family. >> reporter: a path of death and destruction stretching through kansas and kentucky. >> i toured the area, i saw how devastating the damage is. the overturned semis and cars and apartment buildings shredded to bits. >> reporter: harrisburg, illinois may have taken the hardest hit. winds of 170 miles an hour, searing through the core of this

tight knit rural town. >> hearts broken. you know, knowing that we've with lost childrenp. we've lost loved ones, we've lost part of our family here in this community. >> reporter: six people died in harrisburg, at least a dozen were killed in storms across tornado alley over the last 24 hours and more than 100 were injured. some those in the resort town of branson, missouri, where a twister stayed on the ground for 22 miles. the cleanup started as soon as the winds died down. >> you always see these things on tv, happening to somebody else. this time it happened to us. >> reporter: forecasters warn it could happen again, with the possibility of more storm as cross the heartland through friday night. in communities like this one, they're not so much worried about the forecast right now, instead, looking to help those who have lost so much, and trying to find some way to start to heal. that is the latest live from here inform harrisburg, jay

political ads based on content. moran worries this sets a dangerous precedent especially as we head into a contentious election season. >> this is an inp appropriate ad. if this gets allowed, it's going to be a signal to others to put even more inappropriate ads on public property. >> metro says it doesn't endorse the ads in the system, and said that it does not reflect thoughts of the company. and a lot of people we talked to who walked past the ad said they didn't notice it. back to you. thanks, wendy. the senate will vote on a bill tomorrow to deny health coverage they find morally objectionable. the blunts bill is backed by a number of senate republicans including roy blunt, who is a major romney supporter.

>> the idea of presidential candidates getting into questions about contraception within a relationship between a man and a woman, husband and wife. i'm not going there. >> romney later said he misunderstood the question and he supports the blunt bill because he believes in a conscience exemption for religious institutions and people of faith. all of this comes as we learn romney's win in michigan actually results in a split of delegates with rick santorum, 15 a piece. the republican race should become clearer next tuesday when ten states will hold primaries, including virginia. tomorrow maryland's governor martin o'malley is set to sign the bill that legalizes same sex marriage in maryland. it will not go into effect until january. opponents are working overtime to try to get the issue on the ballot. earlier today, the state board of elections approved petition drafts filed by an organization called the maryland marriage

alliance. they need 56,000 signatures to get that issue on the ballot. police in laurel tonight, trying to identify a person critically injured in a hit and run. the white pickup truck jumped the curb on route 198 this afternoon, hit a man walking on the sidewalk. the force of the imz pact threw the victim down an embankment and into a parking lot. the driver of the pickup truck took off eastbound on 198. the. the man in charge of prince georges county says everything will be reviewed after a councilmember was caught doing 105 miles an hour on the beltway. tonight she says she'll take a driver's safety class. jackie benson reports. >> reporter: prince georges county member baker is the latest to weigh-in. >> i have all the faith in the world our police chief and inspector general will handle it the way it should be. i thought her statement was

appropriate. >> the prince georges county police department will conduct an executive review why the officer who stopped karen tolls gave her a $90 ticket for an unsafe lane change, but only a warning for speeding. >> we didn't have radar, and the time period that the officer had on the beltway to establish a good pace of the vehicle that he eventually stopped didn't exist. >> in a newly issued statement, tolls told news 4, in addition to paying the appropriate fine, i will not be driving a county owned vehicle until voluntarily completing a driver improvement course to ensure my safety and the safety of others. >> if i would have done that, i would have got the whole book thrown at me. >> i would have gotten a nice ticket or my license taken. >> reporter: when with county executive baker was asked whether this will make him reconsider the rules on take home vehicles for county employees, he said all options are on the table. jackie benson, news 4. police in arlington are

looking for two police impersonators. they robbed a family at gunpoint in their house. it happened in the 300 block of south fillmore street. the suspects had a fake search warrant when they knocked on the door last week. they got inside they stuck the residents up. they took things inside with them out of the home. >> i opened the door. they have a gun and a knife. you know, he's wearing mask and gloves. the other one -- >> the two made off with $13,000 in cash and jewelry. police say it appears that the incident was isolated. and that one of the people in the house is currently awaiting trial on charges of bank robbery. remember that fire that sent seven prince georges county firefighters to the hospital last week, it was arson? chopper 4 was over the scene as wined withes fuelled the fire on 57th avenue in riverdale friday

stopped school bus in montgomery county. next week, county council is set to approve a program in which cameras mounted on buses will capture cars and ticket drivers who pass them illegally. the tickets will be sent in the maim. an elevator company fired five mechanics blamed for a deadly elevator accident in new york city. the mechanics cut off a safety system when working on the elevator back in december. ad executive suzanne hart was crushed to death when her foot got stuck in the door and the elevator took off. the city suspended the license of the elevator owner for failing to put the elevator back into service. the cell phone's auto correct is being blamed for a scare that locked down two schools in georgia. somebody got a text about noon, it read gunman be at west hall tod today. west hall is the name of a middle school and high school. police eventually tracked the

back in 2002, a multimillion dollar project in northeast. sidewalks, roadways, lighting, wrestler wrestlers popped up when they realized the soil underneath was in bad shape, requiring change orders with the project. >> salahi says by the time the project wrapped in 2004, the money from d.c. had run out. seven years later, the company says it's still waiting to be paid for, those change orders and other costs. >> 1.2 million is what is still outstanding. >> reporter: rustler sued and ended up here. the d.c. contract appeals board. a special group of judges that deal with all contract disputes against the city. there are at least nine other road projects with claims against the department of transportation. including f street, the 35th street bridge and the new

hampshire avenue bridge. companies claim they're owed more than $8 million for work. >> you don't get a job like this very often. >> the excitement to work on a historic bridge project on connecticut avenue turned into frustration. his company, a&m concrete is suing ddot for $2.2 million. he says the project was delayed because ddot made a mess of the traffic closures and didn't plan enough for an unexpected expense. >> the skeleton was rusted more than what they showed on the plan. >> he says he's been waiting for more than five years just to get a trial date. >> maybe they have a point or we have a point. maybe we're wrong. we can't get our day? court. we can't get them to responts. >> reporter: ddot is represented by the d.c. attorney general's office, neither would comment on pending cases. the a.g.'s office admits there have been delays and it's had to replace the attorney on the a&m

case at least three times. the new head judge also blames the backlog on staffing. he tells the i team the board finally has a full panel of judges for the first time in seven years. and they just recently assigned trial dates for every claim. >> on this job, we have spent a good $250,000 in attorney fees on this job. >> reporter: rustler construction keeps raking up the bills as it waits for its day in court. and the cost is keeping some companies frommen watting to work here, and less competition could mean we're all paying more to get that new road. >> when they bid for projects in maryland, or virginia, there can be close to a dozen companies competing. compare that to about half in d.c. the attorney general's office says it's committed to dealing with the claims as quickly as possible. it might lead to a net recovery

storm affecting areas out toward denver, chicago, down to the south, up to the north. it's a big storm, bringing us rain. fortunately for us, we have not seen the severe weather like they have down to the south. we have not seen the winter weather like they have to the north. for us, it's rain and it's raining out there right now across much the area. even heavier rain trying to move on through. take a look at storm 4 radar, can you see where the heaviest rain is. down toward the south, falk ear county just to the north of warrenton. no lightning or thunder with this just yet. i wouldn't be surprised to see a rumble of thunder or two. nothing severe however. we'll zoom on into this area, this is the same area right on in here. southern frederick and northern portions of montgomery that have been hit with upwards of one and a half to two inches rain, we could see flooding problems here, and down to the south. right along 50 and 66.

that's where the other batch of heavy rain is, that's not it. we still have the frontal boundary to the west. this cluster of strong storms that's going to continue to make its way east, i do think they'll start to die out, we will still see another round of heavy rain. it's not just the rain, it's the severe weather down to the south where they're still looking at the possibility of storms overnight. everyone the snow and potentially the biggest snowfall of this winter up toward parts of new england including the boston area. up toward portland maine where they're expecting 8 to 14 inches of snow over the next 24 hours, so a big storm for them, and they're not even close to being done. another storm develops in the same area that got hit today with the tornados, could see another round tomorrow and into early on saturday. so we're not quite out of the woods just yet. look how much rain we've seen over the past 24 hours. almost an inch and a half in washington, just over an inch and a quarter. that's why we've had flood watches in effect until 3:00 in

the morning, out toward i-81, that's why we had the flood warnings, once again, turn around, don't drown. can you always find another way around a swollen creek or river. 54 degrees the current temperature out there right now. temperatures have gone up tonight. 50 in manassas, 57 in laplata, and 60 in fredericksburg. still quite chilly with that rain, 42 and a cold one in martinsburg. 43 in toward frederick. the rain will move on out, guess what happens tomorrow, we break out into the sunshine, and i think temperatures get into the mid-60s for most of us, some 50s up to the north, but mid-60s for parts of northern virginia, around the district and portions of southern maryland. here comes storm number two, this one fast on the heels, i think we'll see shower activity by late in the day friday. and a potential round of thunderstorms for our area early on saturday before we see things cool off, as we make our way toward the end of the weekend and early next week. partly sunny tomorrow morning.

breezy and mild, 46 to about 55 degrees, tomorrow afternoon we will see sunshine and warmer temperatures, 58 to 68 degrees, spring is here. the first day of meteorlogical spring begins tomorrow. 57 on friday, 68 potentially on saturday. with a chance of showers, maybe some thunderstorms on saturday. and then we cool off a little bit, and we're still talking about that chance some light snow overnight sunday night into monday, i don't think it will accumulate too much. but hey, snow has been hard to come by in the forecast. >> any little bit will be excite something. >> i would stay up to see it. a formal dinner at the white house thanking veterans of the iraq
