good morning. welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. it is friday, march 2, 2012. arlington police are on the hunt for three men who impersonated police in two unrelated cases. one of the incidents was in the 300 block of south fillmore street. news4's megan mcgrath is live on lee highway where the other incident happened. what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: barbara, scary for the victims. especially in the home invasion-style crime. that happened on fillmore street. there was a second incident that

happen order lee highway. that was more of a bogus traffic stop. bottom line here is that there are a lot of people out there who are very trusting. when they are approached by someone in regular clothes that says they are a police officer, they believe them. unfortunately there are criminals out there who are taking advantage of that. a uniformed officer in a police cruzzer get pulled over and things are pretty straightforward. but what if you are approached by someone in plainclothes who claims to be a cop. >> if somebody is pulled over by a person who is in plainclothes, please, by all means, verify this person is affiliated with arlington county police department and make sure that this is a legitimate stop. >> reporter: arlington county police are investigating two separate incidents involving suspects pretending to be police officers. one crime happened in the 3700 block of lee highway. the victim was stopped at a traffic light when a black convertible mustang pulled alongside him. the man in the mustang told the other driver he was a police

officer. and had seen the man speeding. they pulled off the road and into the safeway parking lot. investigators say that the police impersonator took the victim's wallet, presumably to get his driver's license. when the victim got his wallet back, $160 was missing. in the second incident, two men identifying themselves as arlington police officers knocked on the door of a home on south fillmore street. >> when they knocked on the door and identified themselves as the arlington county police department, forced their way through the front door, held an adult fee hail and two juvenile children at knife point, the second subject with a handgun went through the remainder of the house looking for valuable items. upon finding about approximately $13,000 in cash and jewelry total, both subjects fled the scene. >> reporter: a frightening experience for that family but were not injured. police don't believe that these two incidents are related. the descriptions of the suspects are different. they believe that will -- completely different incidents.

three people total have done this. two in one of the cases and one in the traffic stop. people are asked to be very cautious. if you are pulled over by somebody in plainclothes, they say they are a police officer, don't be afraid to ask questions. ask for i.d. and you are also encouraged to call 911 and explain what's going on if you have suspicions. reporting live in arlington, megan mcgrath, news4. the fight over whether the government can mandate employers can cover birth control is a heated one. a georgetown law stun found herself in the middle of a debate and the target of conservative talk show host rush limbaugh. >> what does it say about the college coed susan fluke who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? what's that make her? it makes her a slut, right? makes her a possibility tut.

she wants to be paid to have sex. >> those were comments limbaugh made wednesday about sandra fluke. she testified in a house committee this week that her friend needs birth control pills to prevent ovarian cysts. many have called for limbaugh to apologize but he has refused. this morning, fluke spoke to matt lawer and she says the way limbaugh characterized her is troubling. >> i do want to make sure everyone understands that this wasn't just one man who said these things. there's actually many conservative commentators on several major broadcasts networks who did make these types of comments and i would really encourage people to look into that because i think it is -- a very important thing porous to think about that in our society, this is evidently still acceptable. >> republicans and democrats expect this contraception controversy to be part of this year's election. it has been an eventful past 24 hours important limbaugh which included a bomb scare. the bomb squad was sent to his florida home after he received a

suspicious package from pennsylvania. limbaugh has a scanning device in his home and the package appeared to show wires in it. police say the box turned out to be sent by a man who wanted to present limbaugh with a business opportunity. he apologized for the mix-up. turning to our weather now, a chance of rain and thunderstorms in our forecast. storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell is in for tom kierein today. and joins us with his first forecast. >> good morning, everybody. a bright and beautiful start to our friday is starting to fade back behind a little veil of cloud cover headed our way. clouds will continue to lower and thicken as we go through the remainder of your friday. temperatures ahead of the cloud cover, though have jumped into the upper 40s and low 50s. it is a fairly mild day on outside. storm 4 radar shows nothing in our immediate vicinity but nonetheless will are showers moving into central and southern west virginia now. even a few rumbles of thunder across western west virginia and eastern kentucky on the wide view and the yellow, orange and red shadings shows the areas of

slight, moderate and high chances for sfoer weather today. so if you have pilots in and out of cincinnati or nashville, tennessee, lexington and louisville, be on the lookout for flight delays. our first raindrops are probably about four, five hours away. so probably before most everybody gets home from work and school, we will start to worry about the rain showers. clouds lowering and thickening. showers possible by late this afternoon. might even get a rumble of thunder late tonight into early tomorrow. we will talk about that and give thank you 7-day and detail your weekend in a few minutes. >> chuck, ready to talk about the weekend. >> okay. developing story today as chuck mentioned, communities in the midwest and south leveled by tornadoes earlier this week are starting to get hit with more severe weather. just now, we hearing reports of tornado damage in alabama. no word just yet on any injuries there. this line of storms could bring more tornadoes and they could be even stronger. crews are just starting the massive cleanup process shoveling and piling up debris. on wednesday, 27 confirmed

tornadoes swept through seven states. 13 people were killed, six of those victims in harrisburg, illinois. survivors say they can't take much more. >> nervous, shaky, i'm -- i'm tired. i'm -- i'm -- it is -- i just don't even have words for everything that you feel. >> we do not want to go through this again. we will do everything we can to protect our people. >> storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell says the most likely window for tornadoes will be mid to late afternoon today. check on our traffic now and see how things are moving on the roads around washington. here is danella sealock. >> good morning. last check we had a serious crash blocking all of your eastbound lanes of route 50 at south park drive. also it was affecting the westbound side of route 50 arlington boulevard. avoid the area if possible. taking the inner loop of beltway, you are jammed at robinson terminal. these delays con to the dulles toll road as you travel a slow 22 miles per hour. delays start right around the

i-95ber change. barbara, over to you. >> thanks, danella. one person is dead and another in the hospital this morning after the two were shot in southeast washington overnight. the shooting happened at the intersection of benning road and h street. one victim was inside the building and one was outside the building. so far one victim died. a prince george's county jury found man accused of killing a 17-year-old man not guilty. >> mr. tyler, how does it feel to be a free man? >> news4 was the only station there when jarvis tyler was released last night. he was accused of killing stays write seton in bowie, maryland, as part after murder-for-hire plot. hours before the murder his defense team actually offered prosecutors a plea deal in exchange for 30 years behind bars but they rejected it. >> there was no plea deal in this case that would have, for us, served justice. today's verdict was not what we hoped for. but we do respect the process

and we also respect the jury's verdict. >> stacy's mother released a statement saying, quote, we feel as though stacy has been killed again. i'm going back to 2005 all over again. stacy was betrayed by the justice system, she said. a major challenge looms now that maryland legalize same-sex marriage. governor martin o'malley signed the bill into law last night at the state house. couples will be able to tie the knot come january. the measure narrowly passed the house last week. same place where it failed last year. o'malley says this law ensures equals rights to everyone in maryland. >> we are one maryland and all us at the end of the dawe want the same thing for our children. we want them to live in a loving, caring, and committed home that is protected equally under the law. let's signing the bill. >> opponents of the law have already started the process of

trying to overturn it. they are working to collect 56,000 signatures that would put it on the ballot leaving it up to the voters to decide. students in chardon, ohio, are back in school for first time since the deadly school shooting. this is a video of the stun heading to school this morning. yesterday parents, students and teachers gathered at that time high school to remember the three victims from monday's shooting. studen one of the victim was dating t.j. lane. the coach credited with chasing down lane said he comforted students as they lay die. >> i don't know why this happened. i only wish i could have done more. i'm not a hero. just a football coach and a study hall teacher. >> t.j. lane was charged with three juvenile counts of aggravated murder. he could still be charged as an

we have breaking news relating to the dover air force base. a mortuary supervisor resigned according to "the washington post." quinton randy keel was one of lee sf three supervisors charged with mishandling of the war dead. he has already been stripped of his title and transferred. president obama will head over to walter reed medical center. he will see troops wounded in iraq and afghanistan. meanwhile, the president is sending a clear message to iran in a new magazine interview the president said he's not bluff when he insists it is unacceptable for iran to have a nuclear weapon. the president says he won't advertise any plans for iran but he says containment is not an option. right now search and rescue crews are searching for the fourth and final victim killed in a coast guard helicopter crash in alabama.

crews are looking for drew knight, coast guard mechanic. earlier this morning officials found the bodies of two other victims about 100 yards away from the crash site at the bottom of mobile bay. the cause of tuesday's crash is still under investigation. the families of jeffrey dahmer's victims are outraged about a new walking tour centering around the serial killer. the tour gained attention when groupon offered people a chance to take a walking tour of some of dahmer's favorite places in milwaukee, wisconsin, including a bar dahmer used to use to meet some of his victims. dahmer was arrested in 1991 for killing and mutilating 17 young men. the victims' families say the tour is insensitive and in poor taste. the group behind the tour says it is meant to be educational. storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us now with a look at our always favorite weather, friday's day. >> everyone's -- eagerly awaiting the weekend. no doubt about it. spring -- little touch of spring

fever started to break out yesterday when we reached 70 degrees with all of the sunshine and people started thinking -- is this going to last all the way into the weekend? reality check, everybody. this is march when things tend to move very, very quickly. your 70-degree sunshine is a thing of the past. in fact the sunshine is about ready to leave us here in the washington area. still sun getting through. but clouds are going to continue to thicken here over the next couple of hours. and eventually they will lead to rain deposit drops before the day is done. lot of folks may get the first raindrops before sunset tonight. just sort of keep that in mind as you make your plans and get three, four more guaranteed dry hours in front of you. 51 degrees now in washington with a southeast wind at 7 miles per hour. that southeasterly breeze will continue in speed this afternoon. 10 to 20 miles per hour for that southeast breeze later today. current temperatures upper 40s and low 50s around the metro area. even mid 50s now from culpeper to fredericksburg and stafford. 50 in st. mayor write's county.

weather. here's our future weather forecast by 5:00 this afternoon, there's the leading edge of the rain showers with a rumble or would of thunder. not completely out of the question late this afternoon and early this evening. but better thunderstorm chances come in overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. here we are at 7:00 a.m. saturday. just out ahead of that cold front, that will be our best chance for seeing the stronger thunderstorms so be ready for potentially a wakeup call from mother nature early saturday morning with a rumble of thunder. today becoming mostly cloudy. showers possible as early as late, mid to late afternoon today. highs briefly into the upper 50s and a few spots into the low 60s. then tomorrow, cloudy and mild. rain likely especially the front half of the day, chance of thunderstorms early on. i think our thunderstorm chances fade away before lunch time and i think that our rain chances should be done with us mid to late afternoon on your saturday. leaving us dry for saturday night and sunday. at least half your weekend looks good. cloudy, chilly, maybe a damp day coming up on monday before the milder air returns once again by

arlington police are looking for lee men who claim to be officers and committed two separate unrelated crimes. in one incident a man posing as a an officer pulled over a driver on lee highway and took his wallet and stole $160. the other, two men robbed a family on south fillmore street at news 7 point. if you have any information, please contact arlington police. if one of your co-workers had a medical emergency would you know what to do? an employee has the fast actions of a co-worker recovering from a heart attack. this story you will see first on 4.

>> reporter: chances are you have never seen this corner of watkins park. this is the maintenance area. the folks that work here care for a large portion of the parks here in maryland. yesterday they had to carry for one of their own. jim worthington is the lead mechanic for the parks. he fixes things. and not just equipment. but people. that's something he decided as a child. >> my father passed away when i was 9 years old in front of me. and -- i always wanted to make sure if anything like that happened i would be able to react properly. >> reporter: yesterday he got that chance. >> i was thinking if we don't act fast and do what needs to be done very quickly, that he was not going to survive. >> reporter: one moment he is standing and the next moment on the floor. >> he stood up to get a drink of water. our lunch break was almost over.

and as the rest of us was sitting at the table, he just began to fall to the floor. >> reporter: a co-worker collapsed and wasn't breathing. jim, cpr trainer, began compressions and then hooked the man up to a defibrillator. >> i thing second thoughts as to okay, does he really need this? am i -- am i doing something that shouldn't be done? i was doubting myself. but then the aed said administer shock. and i was -- really surprised by that. but i hit the button and -- just like you see on tv, he jumped. and -- i started doing chest compressions again. and that's when the first set of chest compressions he started breathing again. >> he was like a machine. he did what needed to be done and he -- he saved his life. >> the -- total gravity of the whole thing didn't hit me until one of the medics said to the other medic, he said -- if they didn't have that aed, he

wouldn't have made it. and that's when it really hit me. >> the park service is not prepared to release the name that suffered the cardiac arrest. he's still in the hospital and in good condition. expected to be released in just a few days. he's sometime under observation. meanwhile, they are changing the way they live here in this park and the manager is telling me he is going to make it mandatory for all employees to learn cpr. upper marlboro, tracee wilkins, news4. >> we are going to check in now with chuck bell important the latest on the forecast. >> barbara, good morning to you once more. good morning, everybody. our bright sunshine of early this morning is starting to fade ever more behind a deck of cloud cover that's moving on in. temperatures made it into the low 50s now and pretty much all across the metro area. 52 now in college park, 51 rockville. 52 in ft. belvoir and springfield. 50 in manassas. 57 already in warrenton as warmer air is sneaking in our general direction. we might get into the upper 50s to near 60 for a brief time

today. storm 4 radar shows the first sprinkles now across parts of the mountains of west virginia and steadier rain showers with embedded thunderstorms now across much of central and southern west virginia. extending into southwestern virginia. that's all lifting in our general direction. very strong chance of severe weather today across parts of the ohio valley and central kentucky down to central tennessee. northern alabama and northern georgia. if you have friends or relatives flying into or out of that part of the country they could be experiencing delays. rain showers possible by late this afternoon. might get a rumble or would of thunder late tonight into the first part of the day tomorrow. before we see just a sliver or two of sunshine late in the day saturday. rest of the 7-day in a few more minutes. >> thank you, chuck. we would like to clarify something we reported earlier. news4 just got off the phone with the prince george's county state's attorney's office. the state's attorney's office says they did not reject a plea deal to put jarvis tyler behind

for 30 years. tyler was found not guilty last night for the 2005 murder of stays why you seton in bowie. in the state's attorney's office offered the defense team a plea deal in exchange for 40 years behind bars. the defense would not accept anything less than 15 years. no deal was made and a jury did find tyler not guilty. we are going to need extra time this weekend if you plan to use metro. especially if you ride the red line. three stations will be closed on metro's busiest line, shady grove, rockville, and twin brook stations. free shuttle bus less run between shady grove and white flint to get you around the work. trains will also share track between eastern market and stadium armory on both the orange and blue lines. all work begins at 10:00 tonight and should be done in time for your monday morning commute. let's check again on midday traffic out there. here is danella sealock. >> well, metro, speaking of metro, they are single tracking right now for scheduled track

district officials want the redskins back in the city limits. now they have a proposed location for new training facility. mayor gray wants to offer a piece of a 67-acre parcel of land, a block from rfk stadium to team. train flag silt would border independence avenue on a site in the hill east that used to house d.c. general hospital. city officials believe the train flag silt could be the first step to building a new stadium for the team in the district after their fedition field lease is up in 2007 -- 2007. some have already opposed that plan. mixed-use plan with that development but the train flag

silt might knicks those plans. proposed income tax would likely cost marylanders more than fwof martin o'malley originally touted. a review of the tax by the independent department of legislative services found that one in every five marylanders would pay about $274 extra in taxes each year under the plan. that's $80 more than o'malley's original estimate. the burden would be even higher in montgomery county and where about 32% ofs are dwoents pay up to $334. expected receive gnaw from t ee lower. stocks are mixed this morning. we will check in with brian shactman. he joins us with more on that. >> good friday to you. actually the one positive index was the nasdaq. that's now turning to negative as well. we have all three major indices in negative territory. one of the key things is oil. yesterday there was a report of an explosion in saudi arabia. that was proved a false story.

oil spiked up to 110. now it is down under 107. it is extremely high but pulled back about $4 or so from the highs from yesterday. i want to point out a big ipo. the biggest internet ipo before facebook which is expected very soon. yelp, online review site. well, it priced at $15. opened at $22, traded up to $25, up about 60%. talk about online stuff, kodak, of course, mighty have fallen p they are in bankruptcy and sold their online photo business to shutterfly. another publicly traded company for $24 million. when it comes to these companies, that's chump change. kodak is trying to come back as a printer company. right now the friday right now, in the red in terms of stocks. but who knows what will happen the last few hours. back to you. >> we will be watching. thanks so much. with his uncanny resemblance
