mother killed in a violent crash on a water logged roadway. good evening, everyone. i'm chris gordon. 18-year-old taisha williams was thrown from a car when it hit a tree on suitland road in prince george's county two weeks ago. her family, still in mourning. but, tonight, a little bit of closure in her case. darcey spencer with the latest. >> reporter: chris, the family is feeling some sense of relief tonight, that's because the pan who police say was behind the wheel in this fatal crash is now in custody and it's not even in connection with this crime. >> authorities say the driver of an suv that crashed on suitland road two weeks ago taking the life of a young mom left the scene. news 4 has learned that that driver is now in police custody in d.c. being held on a gun charge. tammy holland is the mother of 18-year-old taisha williams who died in that crash. >> i'm just glad that he's locked up. p.d. doesn't have him yet, but he is in custody.

>> police have identified the driver at 21-year-old theron britt. prince george's county police say they have a warrant on file chargie ining him with manslaug. >> and then to leave people on the seen in a wreck like that and don't know what the outcome is. and it's just unfortunate that my granddaughter was the one that died. >> reporter: relatives and friends gathered at the site to pay tribute. hydroplained on standing water. residents have complained about drainage problems here before. >> everybody eegs pulling together and trying to encourage the community to try and fix the damaged roads here so that we don't have to lose a life. >> taisha's mom was greeted by county police captain robert

clark who held her son in his arms after he was fatally shot and wounded in 2006. he was also just 18 years old. >> it means a lot to me. it tells me that my daughter was loved and people cared about her. >> reporter: taisha's mom tells me that more than 600 people turned out for her daughter's funeral on friday, just a testament to the impact this young lady had here in this community. now, again, the driver who was behind the wheel in this case, according to police, he is still being held in d.c. but we're told he will be brought here to prince george's county to face charges in connection with this crash. >> darcy, thank you very much for that update. we turn now to those deadly tornadoes that ripped across parts of the midwest and south. the death toll has risen to 38 tonight. the latest casualty and elderly woman in georgia and, as the search for survivors continues, some of the hardest hits

communities are being told to prepare for snow tomorrow. >> the night sky is mostly clear. the ground below, though, is not. the darkness unable to hide the devastation that stretches for miles. the day after clean-up teams stormed the hardest hit area sifting through debris all that's left from so many communities and lives splintered, twisted and tossed for miles. >> tragic. terrible. i mean, it's just like one minute you're here and then you're gone. >> a disaster spread by a hundred tornadoes that left deep, painful scars across a hundred states. >> cheryl picket's husband, ron, wasn't supposed to be home when the storms hit. >> he shouldn't have been here. he came home early from work because he didn't feel good. and wanted to take a nap. >> reporter: now, cheryl, who had been planning a celebration

for their 40th wedding anniversary. now, instead, has to prepare for a funeral. across tornado alley for many, the only thing to hold onto is each other. and they understand they are the lucky ones. >> they were all okay. that's all that matters. >> as they work through the haunting images of what's happened here and the painful reality that's left behind. >> reporter: many of those survivors will return at first light tomorrow to search for any debris of lives before the storm. jay grey, nbc news, henryville, indiana. >> there are also stories of survival tonight. in se lemme, indiana, a 2-year-old girl was found ten miles from her home in the middle of the field. her house destroyed, her entire family gone. the child is in critical condition at an indiana hospital. and, a dramatic escape for a dozen students in henryville, indiana. officials there say school was

dismissed early for bad weather. bus drivers noticed the storms and turned around. the kids got to safety just moments before winds picked up a bus and threw it into a building. chuck bell is in the storm center now with more on these storms. >> when it comes down to tornadoes, the most important thing that you're up against is the intensity of the storm itself. what do i mean by that? well, we rate tornadoes on the ef scale. and only one to two percent of all tornadoes that occur land in that top one or two categories there. only one or two percent are an f4 or an f5. but those type of storms represent 65% of all of the fatal days that we see in tornadoes. yesterday, there were 98 storms reported and i'd be willing to bet that 25 to 30 probably came from only one or two of those 98 storms. for us, we don't have to worry about severe weather. just kind of a cloudy and cool sunday. but there's at least the mention of a snow flake still in the forecast. we'll give you more about that coming up in a few minutes.

the bill was passed by the house this week and is expected to be signed by governor bob mcdonald. the washington state caucus just wrapped up a few hours ago. nbc news is projecting the winner will be mitt romney. romney will likely get a good number of those. we're not sure exactly how many. all attention now turns to super tuesday. ten states are up for grabs this tuesday, including the key swing state of ohio. that's where rick santorum and mitt romney spent the day campaigning. romney, hoping to gain, today picked up a key endorsement from the state's biggest newspaper. now, to secure the nomination, a candidate must earn 1143 delegates on super tuesday. there are 419 delegates up for

a driver had a run-in with a pizza hut earlier today in silver spring.

it happened around 3:00 along georgia avenue. the crash shattered some windows and doors and sent glass flying. no one was hurt. the windows were boarded up and the restaurant was able to remain open for business. an interruption of 9-1-1 service this afternoon in the district started with an electrical problem. d.c. officials say a feeder problem sent multiple surges through wires near the unified communication center in northeast washington. it knocked out power and also stopped the center from switching to its back-up generator for about 20 minutes. police say a back-up emergency operation center went on line and 9-1-1 service was quickly restored. police are working with pepco to make sure 9-1-1 service remains uninterrupted. up next, a senior at the top of her class and her struggle to stay in the country she calls home. plus, chuck is back with your plus,[ male announcer ]h your with citibank, it's easy

outside, we ended up with some bonus sunshine on a saturday. everybody loves bonus sunshine on a saturday. and as a result, 63 degrees for your high temperature today. hope you enjoyed it because tomorrow, not going to be quite that nice outside. out we go, now, clouds have already started to sneak back into the area. a lot of clouds down across southern maryland where you may have to worry about a rain drop or two. early tomorrow and then off and on sprinkles during the day. trying to usher in some cooler air. tomorrow's high temperatures may not be much higher than where we are right now. temperatures back into the upper 30s and low 40s. northern maryland heading south. 30s in the morning. get your day started with a generally clouded sky.

the further north and west you live, the more sunshine you're likely to see. you folks down into southern maryland, that's going to be sunshine challenge for tomorrow. we'll just call it partly to mostly cloudy. there's the shield of moisture already bringing light rain back into virginia. that's the chances that just sort of graze apart the eastern shore. the bulk of all this is going to stay way off the shore. so the colder air is draining in on that northwesterly wind. there's your shower chance during the course of the day tomorrow. then, with a chillier air, plenty of clouds on our sunday. there's that little monday clipper as it turns the corner. it looks like it just may stay a little bit too far down to the south. so any real snow chances are going to be south of the washington area. not much going on sunday afternoon.

here we are at 6:30 monday morning. there's that little chance of a couple of snow flakes way down to the south. maybe, possibly on the grass, up to an inch. don't get your hopes up for that. we'll be watching it. cloudy and chilly. maybe a sprinkle for your folks in southern maryland. wake up temperatures in the 30s. and then tomorrow, sunshine challenge from washington southbound. a few more breaks from the sunshine out in the mountains of west virginia. cooler tomorrow. and then a nasty, chilly, cloudy day. even if it doesn't snow a whole lot, it's not going to be anywhere near warm monday afternoon. staying chilly through midweek and then back near 70 for thursday. >> coming up in sports, their

there was a whole lot of yelling in your sports department. >> we were just so pumped. i know it's march and we're just yelling and going crazy. this was an awesome game, georgia state and george mason. this was awesome. to get to the big dance, george mason will have to sweep the caa tournament off its feet. tonight, the patriots going toe-to-toe. and, in the past, george mason has had its way winning six of the last seven meetings. only had four points before fouling out in the second half. so it was up to the rest of his teammates to step up. this is awesome. this is the definition of hustle.
