and now, from washington's leading news station, this is news 4 midday. snow is falling to our south right now. in fact some of our area's under a winter storm warning this morning. tom kierin will tell us how long the snow will last. good morning, welcome to news 4 midday, i'm barbara harrison it's monday, march 5th, 2012. we begin with the weather. snow is not falling in dc right now but it is to the south of us, right now where winter storm warning is under way. tom kierein joins us with the forecast. >> it's march we had flowers up, doesn't mean winter is over yet. look at the snow pic, i got a

photo in from sandy perkins in virginia. in southern spotsylvania county, there is the ruler and it says four inches on that railing there -- this was as of 10:00 this morning. probably more there and you can see the snow is covering the ground there. there is a good four inches all over that part of southern spotsylvania county. a narrow band of heavier snow moving in. that narrow band has been moving from the south to the north and east over the last couple hours. tapering off to the west. as we look at radar you can see the bright white band, now beginning to move in the northern neck, and tapering off around fredericksburg and now moving in st. mary's county. a few flurries south of washington, in fairfax, prince william. stafford, the brighter white

areas in southern charles county and st. mary's county. we still have a winter weather advisory, there is a warning out for four to six inches of snow in those counties in pink includes spotsylvania, albermarle, all this expiring in the next couple hours and forecast here for the rest of the week all coming up in a couple minutes, barbara. can't wait to hear what else will happen, thank you, tom. as tom mentioned the snow is falling in the fredericksburg area where we find megan mcgrath. what does the situation look like now? >> reporter: it's a winter wonderland. we're down in fredericksburg, vid vid. look at all the snow. >> it started falling i guess over the night and still coming down as megan was telling us,

tom says four inches had fallen a few hours ago and continues to fall. megan, tell us what you're seeing. >> i was hoping we were done with this. so far my kind of winter, no snow, pretty warm. i'm not thrilled with this. >> are you surprised it's snowing? >> yes, very surprised. this heavily, i thought it would be a little bit. >> weird spring. >> weird. >> we will check on the midday traffic now, any problems from the snow falling in some areas to the south of us? >> a live look at i-95 at route 61 volume is very light and this is the southbound view. volume is very light but slick road conditions, if you're traveling in this area, please use caution. and just travel under speed. if you're traveling on i-66 toward the beltway, no snow here

and nice, clear roads. if you're on i-66 eastbound, really good travel speed at 60 miles per hour, only taking 11 minutes to get from fairfax county parkway to the capitol beltway. crossing over the beltway at american legion bridge, no issues on the outer loop or inner loop. barbara, back over to you. thank you daniela. a 23-year-old d.c. man faces several charges in a crash involving a crowded metro bus, happened at southern and pennsylvania avenues southeast washington. the man wouldn't pull over for a police officer trying to stop him in prince georges county. investigators say he later crashed in several cars and a metro bus. a prince georges county officer responding to the call was involved in a separate crash when a car made a u-turn in front of him. in all, six people were taken to the hospital including three children. police arrested rodney miller, charged with running from police, leaving the scene of the

crash, and driving on a suspended license. today a campaign volunteer for d.c. council candidate facing murder charges. it happened yesterday in the 3600 block of high wood drive southeast. >> reporter: people who live in the community tell me they cannot believe that a dispute between two neighbors would end with one being allegedly stabbed and killed by another. >> you can't imagine it going to that level. >> neighbors say an argument over one neighbor picking up after his dog led to another neighbor stabbing and killing him on sunday. it happened in the 3600 block of highwood drive in southeast d.c., after 10:00 a.m. robert wright, who lives in the 3400 block of carpenter street was found stabbed to death. his neighbor, 56-year-old ellworth colbert was taken in custody, charged with killing his neighbor. >> he grew up here, they built

the house, the one that did the murder. it has been here 35, 40 years. it's not like, you know, they rode their bikes. >> not only did the suspect grow up in this neighborhood, he was also considered a community leader. >> participated in some politics, neighborhood block watch. >> a community activist? >> oh, yeah, all of us usually participate. >> he most recently signed on as a volunteer for the kevin b. chavous campaign. the campaign released this statement saying mr. colbert was a volunteer on my campaign as are more than 100 residents of ward seven and the district. he was not involved in the leadership of the campaign and did not have decision making responsibilities. mr. colbert had a charge for attempted threats to do bodily harm dismissed against him last year. he has a history of charges

center tg around violence and allegations of violence including domestic violence issues, as well as protective orders that have been placed against him. he's due in court again today this afternoon. in southeast tracee wilkins, news 4. jury selection starts today in a wrongful death lawsuit related to the 2007 mass shooting at virginia tech. the parents of two victims are each suing the school for $100,000. they claim the school waited too long to alert students about the first shooting on campus. the president and other top university officials will be asked to defend their actions, 32 people and the gunman died in the shooting. despite a public apology, a seventh advertiser is pulling spots from rush limbaugh's head yo show. >> it makes her a slut, right? >> internet company pro flowers is suspending ads after limbaugh made the comment about a

georgetown law student. the host singled her out after she testified on capitol hill until favor of a policy that would have employers offer birth control under health insurance coverage. in a statement, pro flowers said "mr. limbaugh's recent comments went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and we do not -- that does not reflect our value as a company." our time 8 minutes are a 11:00. we will sit down with dionne warwick, debbie minor. top level meetings happening at the white house and what president obama is saying about iran today. >> the latest

you're watching news 4 midday. this morning, a gang of gunmen disguised in military uniforms killed 25 iraqi police officers in the western part of iraq. the gang started the killings by kidnapping two police commanders from their homes. then they claimed they had warrants for 15 police officers. in the end the gang shot and killed 25 people, and raise the al qaeda flag at a police checkpoint. police killed three gunmen but the rest escaped. the city is locked down and curfew in place. the iraq ish army deployed to keep order. right now, president obama

is meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, discussing iran and rumors the country is developing a nuclear weapon. yesterday the president spoke at the conference for american-israel public affairs committee. told the crowd of more than 13,000 that israel needs to be patient with iran, in the hopes that international sanctions work. but he did say that the u.s. would use force to help protect israel from a possible nuclear attack. >> i will not hesitate to use force when it's necessary to defend the united states and its interests. moving forward, i would ask that we all remember the weightiness of these issue stakes for israel, america and the world. >> president obama added a nuclear armed iran is not only a danger to israel but the united states as well. officials in moscow say thousands of people are protesting vladimir putin's

victory, he won a third term as president giving him six more years of power. independent observers claim the 63% win should be invalid because it was the result of voter fraud and ballot stuffing. in the race for the white house, gop candidates are making a final push for votes ahead of super tuesday. tomorrow than 400 delegates up for grabs in 11 states including virginia. mitt romney has an edge in the latest poll numbers. in the nbc news, wall street journal poll romney would beat rick santorum if they were the only two on the ballot. he leads 50-45, but when pitted against president obama, he loses 50-44%. each of the candidates is hoping to have a strong showing tomorrow. >> sure hope to get support even in the primary process throughout the south. i think i will. i got good support in florida. >> great grass roots campaign, hanging in there. >> very hard for one of the

major candidates to not carry their home state and continue to move forward. >> as for now, rick santorum has a slight edge in tennessee and ohio. newt gingrich is expected to win big in his home state of georgia. and mitt romney, as one of only two candidates on the ballot, is expected to take virginia. along with an edge in the polls, romney has a key endorsement. eric cantor says romney has the best plan to get the economy back on track, but the virginia congressman says he does not plan to be a running mate if romney wins the nomination. well, storm 4 meterologist tom kierein says it's snowing, how long will it last and will we see it in town? >> no, a few flurries here around the metro area, just to our south they are singing "jingle bells" in march. this is a photo sent in this morning,ing from an hour or so

ago just south of fredericksburg in partlo, virginia in southern spots taylvania county. you can see how wide spread it is, it's a winter wonderland in southern spotsylvania county on march the 5th. quite a scene here. here is the scene over the potomac river, we have a gray sky, and cold, we have a few flurries. right now 40 degrees at reagan national with a calm wind, thankfully. as we look at what has been happening here over the last 12 hours, one very narrow band, i'll repeat this loop here and show you what has been happening. watch this very narrow band, white band, the one produced the quick four inches of snow from charlottesville to south of fredericksburg, now breaking up as it moves toward the lower part of southern maryland. the areas in gray a few flurries here in prince william county, charles county, southern faulk,

can and to the east of there, few pockets of moderate snow now falling in the northern neck of virginia and in southern maryland and st. mary's county, that is breaking up as it moves off to the east they will have diminishing amounts there. the counties in lavender, including charles and st. mary's, northern neck, another hour or so. some of the higher spots along the blue ridge could get six inches of snow. it's cold snow is melting slowly, fredericks, temperature a little above freezer, culpepper and charlottesville, near freezing in winchester, leesburg and fairfax, arlington, montgomery, prince georges county in the mid-30s to near 40 degrees. the wilder view showing breaks in the clouds off to the west, little sunshine breaking out over the shenandoah valley at

system moves off to the east, we'll get sunshine breaking out later this afternoon leaving in its wake dusting to two inches in southern maryland and light blue band farther to the west. this is that narrow band just to our south anywhere from two to six inches from that system and as i mentioned, it's winding down now, pretty much ending now. for the rest of the afternoon, may get sunshine breaking out, any of the snow ending, temperatures then rebounding back in the low to mid-40s, much of the area after that snow ends, the winds rather gusty. winds diminish tonight, temperatures fall to near freezing by midnight. by dawn tomorrow down to the mid-20s. feeling wintery cold starting off tuesday morning. tuesday afternoon, sunshine, near 50, all the snow melting. near 60 on wednesday. we'll go what snow, i don't remember any snow. feels like spring. flowers will be happy. mid 60s on thursday.

you're watching news 4 midday. tonight at the kennedy center the capital stars talent competition will be held the event honors outstanding academic achievement and artistic abilities of college bound students from the district of column bee gentleman. judging the talent is dionne r warwi warwick, debbie allen, ricky minor. so excited to have you. an honor for us here at nbc 4 but the city that you've come here for our kids to help them feel important. thank you for doing that. tonight's winner gets scholarship money how important is it to give scholarships to these kids? >> i think vitally. i went to college on a scholarship and i know how important it was not only for me but for my family, who couldn't afford to just plunk down all

people here in washington at the kennedy center. >> how were you discovered? >> discovered one day -- i was discovered many times, it wasn't one time. first it was in aida, i was in the ballet, someone stepped on my skirt and it came off and director said "she's fantastic, all skirts off." >> dionne you were discovered because you were singing back-ups. making money for college? >> that, too, yes. for the drifters and a song that bacharach approached me and if i would be interested in doing demonstration records, he would be writing with hal david. >> you and burt bacharach and hal david have a history like no other. >> they heard you and loved you, is that right?

right now on news 4 midday, president obama is meeting with benjamin netanyahu, two discussing iran's plans to develop a nuclear weapon. the president has already assured israel that the united states will do whatever necessary to protect israel and prevent iran from developing a weapon. communities dealing with the devastation of tornadoes have a new concern this morning. snow that fell overnight could weigh down structures barely standing after the deadly storms. debris is scattered for miles and 38 families are trying to cope with losing a loved one. jay gray has a closer look at the strike zone. >> reporter: this morning, across tornado alley, battered communities preparing for anything but a normal monday. the message seems a bit obvious. like so much here, henryville high school has been torn apart. there are, though, other signs of survival.

sunlight brings the rhythm of crews working to pull away and pile up what they can. others sifting through the rubble by hand to find anything they might be able to save. evidence of their lives before the storm. >> she is probably 70 and she lost everything except what we can pull out. >> three dozen families know they won't find any help or hope in this debris. they lost loved ones in the storm. one of those, 15-month-old angel babcock, after the storm, first responders found the toddler fighting for her life in this field. her mom, dad and two brothers already dead. yesterday, angel passed away after being pulled from life support. her grandfather shared his emotions just before he made the agonizing decision. >> my pastor will go in with me, we'll pray there and i'm going to tell that little girl that i'm going to tell her that -- it's time for her to meet her mommy and daddy.

>> reporter: while those left behind now fight through their overwhelming grief, as they face the difficult struggle to survive. jay gray, nbc news, henryville, indiana. the man who lived next door to the toddler who died is still in the hospital, jason miller says he took 15-month-old angel babcock and her family in the home the tornado hit as soon as they gathered to pray. miller spoke from his hospital bed on "the today show". >> i can't believe it was me and the rest didn't make it it's very saddening to hear the whole family passed away and i was setting this holding their hands seconds before they died. it's a very devastating and you know, very thankful to be here and thankful for the people who prayed for me. >> miller hoos a broken back, broken arm and bruised ribs but says he's fortunate he survived. now to the snow moving to the south of us, south of the district, the weather is forcing

spotsylvania county public schools to cancel all their afternoon activities. megan mcgrath has a look at conditions right now. >> reporter: thought winter was done? think again we're down in fredericksburg, virginia, look at the snow we're seeing here this morning. a system blew through and dumped enough of the white stuff to coat the grassy areas and coat the trees. looks like a winter wonderland out here. fortunately the road surfaces were in good shape, very warm, so when the snow hits the road it melts, just wet conditions out there but a lot of folks are hoping for spring. we had so much warm weather lately, people we talked to are a little disappointed to see this white stuff falling. >> i was hoping we were done with this. so far my kind of winter, no snow, pretty warm. i'm not thrilled with this. >> are you surprised it's snowing? >> yes, very surprised. this heavily i thought it would be a little bit. >> weird spring.

>> weird, it is. >> if you're not a fan of the snow, don't worry it is not expected to last long. we're expecting temperatures in the upper 60s come thursday. in fredericksburg, virginia megan mcgrath, news 4. that what is we thought it would look like a month ago. tom kierein. >> a few flurries around sterling, virginia, fairfax county and loudon county, the camera bouncing around a bit, getting a wind picking up. the heaviest snows are brighter white areas, there is one in orange county, and then another white, bright area, that is some moderate snow falling in the northern neck of virginia around north umberland county, st. mary's county getting a dusting. most of it winding down rg total amounts of dusting to a couple of inches all on grassy areas as you saw there with megan in

fredericksburg, but it has accumulated slushy areas farther to the south, two to six inches some of the higher amounts along the blue ridge to the west of charlottesville and farther east, most of this all ending. temperatures right now, beginning to get more above freezing, a lot of this will be melting a bit during the afternoon. then it will freeze up this afternoon late and in the evening hours, we're getting breaks in the clouds farther to the west and north. little bit of sunshine breaking out there, may have sun breaking late this afternoon as we reach the low to mid-40s locally, tomorrow, sunny, near 50. near 60 wednesday, mid 60s thursday, with sunshine, maybe rain friday, chilly and dry for the weekend. barbara, that's the way it looks. tom, thank you. midday traffic, here is danella. >> traveling i-270 southbound at 85, debris slowing you down, be aware of that. i-95 in virginia, connecting to the beltway, no issues to

well. without volunteers we would be in a very unfortunate position. these folks give so much back to the community, countless hours every month. >> i'm sure there are seniors who are watching that don't know there are these opportunities out there. donna, tell us what you're doing as a volunteer how you got started. >> i volunteer for the senior connection, they take care of seniors, 65 and older, we do drives to mostly doctors offices, appointments, will take you shopping, they have a program where you come in and help with you your paperwork, and we have visitors program where people go in to people's homes to visit with them or play cards or something like that. and we also have a telephone program where if you can't get help but you want to volunteer you can make phone calls to other people who are home-bound. i have been doing this for 14 years now, and i enjoy it. the volunteers are very much appreciated by all the old people, and they are not all

older, but mostly they are, in their 80s and 90s or house bound or don't have family around anymore. >> bill, how about you? how did you getnto it, what made you decide to volunteer and what have you been doing? >> my lifetime work was in human services as a manager and provider for human services. then i retired. for six years i thought golf was going to be great and after i got tired of that. i began to look around for an opportunity to work with people i really love working with people, and i found the montgomery county long term umbudsman program. i'm one of 55 people volunteering in the program. i needed to give back where i was helping and doing things with people and i love this job. i work at an assisted living facility, our volunteer program

works with nursing homes and assisted living. and we try to guarantee the highest quality of life, to protect them from harm, neglect and abuse. >> i think it's fantastic. if you can get out there and do it, it doesn't matter how old you are, you can be 80 or 90 if you can get around and help out they can use your help, somebody can. can you tell us how you can vote for the senior you know who is -- who you think is doing an outstanding job, senior here know someone's life out there? >> people can either mail in a nomination form or go on to our website at salutetoseniorservice.com, and there is a nomination form on there, somebody can nominate themselves or if you have a friend or family member you want to nominate, just tell why you

clientele. >> i'm going to start cooking here. basically what i'm doing a one pot type or want pan dish, hangar steak with wild mushrooms. >> how do you pick a hangar steak? >> it's a cut of meat it comes from the side here of the animal, of the cow. has a lot of flavor. full of flavor, and you'll taste it in a little bit. >> a tender cut? >> very tender. >> you can fry it up and leave it? >> you can grill it, fry it. this is red wine sauce. that is a reduction of red wine and what i do is i add in shallots and garlic and thyme and a touch of butter. we're doing it all in one pot. this will be right in here you can smell that coming out here a little bit. >> does smell delicious. >> onions or shallots in here.
