trouble for drivers before moving out. it misses d.c. but not to our south. i'm jim hand. >> i am pat lawson muse. there is no white stuff here in d.c. but a winter storm dumped several inches of snow on parts of central virginia overnight and forced spotsylvania county schools to cancel all afternoon activities. megan mcgrath spent the morning in fredericksburg. she is here to talk about folks waking up to flurries. >> reporter: if you thought winter was done, well think again. we're back here in fredericksburg, virginia. take a look at the snow we're seeing here this morning. a system blew through and it dumped enough of the white stuff to actually coat the grassy areas and also coat the trees. so it looks like a winter wonder land out here. the road surfaces were in pretty good shape. very warm so when the snow hits the roads it's just melting. we're just seeing wet conditions out there. but a lot of folks were really hoping for spring. we've had so much warm weather lately that people we talked to are actually a little disappointed to see this white

stuff falling. >> i was hoping we were done with this. you know, so far it's been my kind of winter. no snow. pretty warm. i'm not thrilled with this. >> are you surprised it's snowing? >> yes. very surprised. this heavily. i thought we'd just have a little bit. >> reporter: weird spring. >> weird. >> reporter: if you're not a fan of the snow, don't worry. it's not expected to last very long. we're expecting temperatures in the upper 60s come thursday. in fredericksburg, virginia, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> that's right. it could be the coldest day of the work week so far. >> meteorologist veronica johnson is live in storm center 4 with our first forecast. >> yeah. we're talking about a warmup for the week, folks, but more than just flurries there in southern maryland today starting out. take a look at this image. it's sent in from sandy perkins in virginia. this is spotsylvania county where they picked up 4 to 5 inches of snowfall today and

across the area between 1 and as much as 8 inches of snow. take a look at the radar. we're still getting snow moving through from the northwest down to the southeast. you can see very, very spotty and scattered as far as amounts go throughout the area. here's what we came in with so far. marshall just around 0.5 inch of snowfall. then of course the higher totals down to the south around st. mary's around spotsylvania. earlysville the southwest pocket just below culpepper county 8.5 inches of snow just to the north of earlysville down in virginia. spotsylvania coming in with 5 inches of snow. so more than just flurries there today. what we're left with, centreville now reporting some moderate snowfall. you can see mainly down to the south still around 301, clinton, maryland and waldorf, maryland still seeing very light precipitation. we're at 43 degrees right now. some wind, too, at 30 miles per hour.

here's a look at your good night forecast where it is going to be a cold night and a cold start to the day tomorrow. so winter's last gasp trying to hang on. a warmup. we'll talk about the potential for any spring thunderstorms coming our way this week. a campaign volunteer for d.c. council candidate is facing murder charges now after an attack. it happened here in the 3600 block of highwood drive southeast. tracee wilkins with the latest. >> reporter: people who live in this community tell me that they cannot believe that a dispute between two neighbors would end with one being allegedly stabbed and killed by another. >> you just can't imagine it going to that level. >> reporter: neighbors in an argument over one neighbor picking up after his dog led to another neighbor stabbing and killing him on sunday. it happened in the 3600 block of highwood drive in southeast d.c. just after 10:00 a.m. 37-year-old robert wright who lives in the 3400 block of

carpenter street was found stabbed to death. his neighbor, 56-year-old ellsworth colbert who lived around the corner in the 3500 block of pope street, was taken into custody and is charged with killing his neighbor. >> well, he grew up here. they built the house. i mean, they've been here at least 35, 40 years, so it's not like, you know, they rode their bikes. >> reporter: not only did the suspect grow up in this neighborhood. he was also considered a community leader. >> participate in some politics, neighborhood block watch, you know. >> reporter: so he is a community activist. >> oh, yeah. we all in this neighborhood were shocked because all of us usually participate. >> reporter: he most recently signed on as a volunteer for the kevin b.chavous campaign for council member. the campaign released this statement saying mr. colbert was a volunteer on my campaign as are more than 100 residents of ward 7 and the district. he was not involved in the

leadership of the campaign and he did not have any decision-making responsibilities. mr. colbert had a charge for attempted threats to do bodily harm dismissed against him just last year but he has a long history of multiple charges all centered around violence and allegations of violence including some domestic violence issues as well as protective orders that have been placed against him. he's due in court again today this afternoon. in southeast i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. jury selection is under way in a wrongful death lawsuit related to the 2007 mass shootings at virginia tech. celeste and graphton fairfax are parent of aaron who died in the shooting. petersons are one of two families suing the school for $100,000. they claim administrators waited too long to alert students about the first shooting on campus. virginia tech's president and other top university officials will be asked to defend their actions.

32 people and the gunman died in the shooting spree. radio host rush limbaugh is still apologetic today but defiant about losing money from advertisers. today limbaugh reiterated his apology to georgetown university student sandra fluke. he called her a prostitute and slut on the air last week in response to fluke's stand on birth control insurance coverage. aol pulled ads from limbaugh's show today but limbaugh says the ad dollars will be replaced. for her part sandra fluke told hosts of the view today that she has little interest in letting limbaugh apologize personally over the phone. tomorrow is the biggest day so far in the republican race for the presidential nomination. it is super tuesday. there are nominating contests around the country. 424 delegates are at stake and the biggest prize? ohio. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: mitt romney toured a sheet steel plant in canton,

climbing nationwide. prices are up 14% since the beginning of the year. high crude oil prices and concerns over the situation in syria and iran are all contributing to the price spike. triple-a says the shutdown of oil refineries is also a factor. >> since this time last year we've seen six refineries shut down on the east coast, two in the last month or so. and that has taken almost one billion barrels of oil out of circulation a day. >> reporter: right now triple-a reports the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.88 in the district. in maryland it's $3.71. in virginia the average price is $3.65 and in west virginia it's $3.81. >> prince george's county could be next in line to pay a bag tax. a bill is moving through right now, the maryland general assembly, that would allow prince george's county to establish a tax on plastic and paper bags. prince george's county requires permission from the general

"entertainment weekly" says it became clear early on her range was limited. for most of the show she was relegated to making faces in the background while newsday called her performance "wooden and flat." she started off the show and keenan thompson was checking her pupils and kristin wick was patting her down. she was making fun of her bad girl behavior. but most folks didn't really think that her performance throughout the show was that good. i'm just glad she was able to get through the entire show and showed up on time. >> right. you've got to, right? because it's a live show at

an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the richter scale shook the san francisco area this morning. no injuries or damage were reported. aerial views of the very top of the golden gate bridge widened to the nearby city of el cerrito a mile from where the u.s. geological survey determined the center of the quake was about 8 miles northeast of san francisco. the quake and aftershocks were felt from santa rosa to santa cruz. a law enforcement officer described the quake as a jolt with some rumblings for a few seconds. as a precaution bay area commuter trains were temporarily stopped to inspect the tracks. >> back here for some the flakes are still falling. >> that's right. for anyone who didn't check the forecast. >> right. >> last night maybe they were surprised at the snow down south. they got some real snow there. around here just a few flakes. but what's next then is real

cold air overnight. it's going to feel a lot like winter during the overnight period. let's head over to the weather wall and talk about when these snow showers will be ending. 43 your temperature. we've got a mostly cloudy sky still but we're starting to clear out. that wind out of the north-northwest is 13 miles per hour. let's talk about what's going on in other parts of the area. our temperatures during the overnight period, everywhere, are going to be dropping down plenty cold overnight to around freezing most neighborhoods by 11:00 p.m. then tomorrow morning in the 20s, in the mid and upper 20s throughout the area. a cold start for us. take a look though. that snow will be ending about 7:00 or 7:30. you can see scattered snow showers making their way northwest, the southeast, still hanging on around gaithersburg. bethesda very light flakes. same thing around clinton and waldorf right there around 301 those moving through, dahlgren, too, and fair view beach. this system part of what is like

a southern slider if you will. that snow starting to the west around illinois. around indiana and, yes, that includes also southern indiana. this is the same area we were talking about at the end of last week, the tornado ravaged areas of southern indiana and kentucky so they had snow on top of that just adding insult to injury. and that system made its way off to the east clipping us. next, cold air for us with those snow showers and flurries winding down around 7:00 or 7:30. a cold night, sunshine with real, chilly air that will be on tap throughout the day tomorrow. so cool day coming our way tomorrow. flurries ending. skies clearing but cold. sunset today 6:06. 31 to 37 degrees with a northwest wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour. then yeah. cold air for a change starting out again. sun is up at 6:32 tomorrow and when you head out the door you're definitely going to need your coat. 22 to 29 degrees for the temperature but by the afternoon

good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. new at 4:30 a campaign volunteer for ward 7 candidate evan chavous has been charged with murder today. ellsworth colbert was arrested sunday for allegedly stabbing his neighbor to death after the two got into an argument. he pled not guilty this afternoon in court. rush limbaugh lost two more advertisers today. a total of nine companies have abandoned the show. this is a response to limbaugh's comments about a georgetown law student last week. limbaugh said he was sorry on the air today after issuing an apology over the weekend.

this was the scene in fredericksburg early this morning, a winter storm bringing snow flurries to parts of central virginia forcing some schools to cancel activities this afternoon. there was even more snow farther south. it came as a disappointment for many who hoped winter was over. and worries about slowing economic growth in china and the possible setback for a bailout of greece dragged on the markets here today. the dow lost 14 points to close at 12,962. the nasdaq was off 25 and the s&p 500 lost 5 to close the day at 1,364. a winter storm is adding to the woes of people in parts of the tornado ravaged midwest. 39 people now were killed by the storms that hit this friday. thousands of others have seen their neighborhoods destroyed. now the weight of several inches of heavy, wet snow is increasing the danger that buildings already damaged could come down. jay gray has the latest.

>> reporter: a blanket of white can't hide the dark reality of what happened here. the splintered wood, and twisted metal, still pushes through the snow and so do survivors. >> we have to work through it. >> reporter: the soggy and cold conditions have made the effort a bit more difficult if that's even possible. you see, when you have lost everything 4 or 5 inches of snow doesn't really make that much of a difference. still, somehow in all of this mess families are finding important pieces of their lives before the storm. >> found our homeowners' insurance policy completely dry and buried in some rubble. started digging and there it was. >> reporter: it's hard to believe that anything could be found when you see the magnitude of the toado. this home video provides the first glimpse of the massive ef-4 twister that ripped through henryville pushed by swirling winds of at least 170 miles an hour. the battered remnants of henryville high school are evidence of the power -- the

roof peeled away to reveal a gutted building with books and work scattered for miles, but the lessons so many have been forced to learn over the last few days don't come from any classroom. >> i felt the whole house just getting sucked straight up into the twister. and then i blacked out. >> reporter: jason miller does remember pulling his neighbors from their trailer into his house right before the storm hit. the family of five did not survive including little angel babcock removed from life support late yesterday. >> i went over to the neighbors, brought them over into my house, and then they died. you know, that's just hard to -- very hard to accept. >> reporter: grief that so many are dealing with as they struggle to somehow make sense of all that's happened here. that just like the cleanup and recovery is going to take a very long time, especially difficult when you consider how early these storms hit. there are still two full months left in what has already been a deadly tornado season. in henryville, indiana, jay

gray, news 4. an employee at a pizza store gets caught in the middle of an armed robbery and the whole ordeal is caught on camera. take a look at this surveillance video taken last week of the pizza store in central colorado. the armed man stormed into the store, pointing his gun at the terrified employee. she crouches on the ground, unsure of what to do, as the gun owner orders the owner to give him money from the register. the owner says the robber was disappointed with the amount of cash he got. >> i put it in his hands and he goes is that all you've got? i said, welcome to a trying business in this economic crisis. >> the robber ran off with the cash. the customer and owner were not injured. police say the same man is responsible for 11 store robberies in the past month. police are calling him the 32 bandit because of the number on his sweat shirt he wore during one of those robberies. coming up on news 4 at 4:00

we're going to get the fever this week? which one? >> we're going from winter to spring fever this week. like we've been doing all winter but now it is spring so we want the spring weather. let's take a look and see what's going on outside. plenty chilly and it's going to be cold overnight. by early tomorrow morning we still have some of those snow showers coming through the area. northwest to southeast. you can see it on the loop here taking you back two hours. a wide view. you can see all the way west into west virginia. still some snow showers hanging on. and right there into d.c. just a little bit of precip around bethesda heading east-southeast through d.c. and down to the

south around shady side and diehl another pocket there around areas of mechanicsville, all of this moving east-southeast. calvert beach you're going to get wet before long again and right down to 29, culpepper and remington, again, pushing east toward i-17. so still a little bit of wetness hanging on, still going through the clouds and sunshine here for the next couple hours. 43 our temperature. it's after i think about 9:00 when we are going to really start to see the skies clear. precip should be ending about 7:30 or so. winds gusting to 25 miles per hour so a little breezy. allowing some of the temperatures to feel certainly a little colder. the wind chills i think later tonight before the wind really goes is going to be in the upper 20s. 34 degrees your 11:00 p.m. temperature. cold tomorrow morning at 5:00 and at 7:00 a.m. 29 to 30 degrees right there in d.c. for mount airy 24 to 25 degrees.

i was so focused on what we were doing and he spun around and he was wearing this jacket and i was like, he stole my jacket! >> all the studs on it and stuff. >> yeah. >> we were just like screw it. let's go crazy. and started like throwing things. it was really confirming and liberating. >> are you happy with your teammates? >> yes. our team is kracrazy this year. >> and seeing live auditions are behind us we're talking battle rounds. every time in our live chat we find new people that say i just watched the boys, first time. i am hooked. for those who don't know what the battle round is what exactly is that? >> the battle round phase is when cee lo puts everybody together in duets and you go against each other to see who the best singers are. >> okay. >> females, too. >> it gets heated. >> and since people who aren't necessarily supposed to be together so you kind of have to change and adjust. there's a lot of drama and stuff

ready for this? apple reaches a major milestone with 25 billion apps. that's been reported downloaded from the i-tunes store. apple officials tell us when they launched the apple store four years ago they never imagined the mobile apps would become such a phenomenon. by the way download number 25 billion was a free version of the where's my water game? it was downloaded by an apple customer in china. that customer will receive an i-tunes gift card worth $10,000. you can buy a lot with that.

>> yes indeed. a tech website is claiming to have a pretty good idea of what the newest version of apple's ipad will look like. the site m.i.c. gadget claims the new ipad will be a little thicker but with tapered edges to make it feel thinner. apple is expected to unveil the latest ipad at 3:00 on wednesday. if your dog's spending any amount of time at home alone you may want to leave the tv on. there is a new cable channel geared specifically to canine viewers. according to business week dog tv went live in february after four years of dog market research. the founder says the programming is meant to soothe your dog's abandonment anxiety. right now it's only available to time warner cable and cox media customers in san diego but the israeli production company behind dog tv hopes to expand across the u.s. by the end of the year. they'll charge about $4.99 per
