about a gunman heading towards the campus. jane has our report from foggy bottom. jane. >> reporter: jim, we definitely have breaking news here on the campus of gw university. i'm on h street between 21st and 22nd street. i'm going to step out. there's a secret service patrol car. they got an alert there was a man carrying a gun coming from the white house toward the gw campus. it was very quiet on campus. then they got an alert saying the authorities couldn't find anything. about ten minutes ago a lot of police officers, metropolitan police officers with rifles, secret service agents all went into the library here on h street. you can see some of the officers outside here. they went into the library. they weren't allowing gw students into the library. something is going on concerning the alert. the alert that went out at 9:30

tonight said there was a white male balding with eyeglasses wearing a gray fleece sweater, possibly carry a handgun going west from the white house to the gw campus. again, the library is basically on a lockdown. no students are allowed p in. there were a dozen police officers many with rifles insided library, and they are presumably it has something to do with the alert of the gunman coming from the white house toward the gw campus. that's what we know at this time, jim. we're reporting live from the gw campus. i . we have two other breaking stories. a suspicious powder linked to envelopes in dallas and new york. in fair fast county a bomb squad called to a neighborhood where someone found a box of nails and wires. first downtown, the fbi analyzing that powder. it was sent to a restaurant at

9th and f straights. hazmat teams were called this evening. no one was injured but we learn the letters sent to the restaurant may be part of a b s bigger investigation including packages sent to new york and texas. scott gordon with our affiliate in dallas has more on the case. >> what happened at the restaurant there in washington today was similar to at least nine other incidents across the country today including several at schools here in the dallas area. the fbi has been investigating all these mailings since 2008. they've been sent to schools, airports, governor's offices and u.s. embassies overseas. in may at least 20 letters turned up at dallas center schools. the person doing all this hasn't been caught. the motivation isn't clear, but notes in the envelopes appear to taunt federal agents. the one in new york today made reference to the nazi police and corrupt law enforcement.

in the past some letters have included return addresses but don't give agents much of a clue, they're the addresses of fbi offices in he texas. after that breaking news in fairfax county, a rare callout for the bomb squad there. jamari stone is on a guilder street. >> reporter: rare indeed, jim. the owner of this house momenting ago we learned recently moved to afghanistan. police say a suspicious package was left behind. you can see this unit here. the bomb squad is walking up to this thing putting on their kevlar suits. they put it on in case the suspicious package was going to explode. they walked in and out of the doorway there. basically what they're doing the fairfax county police roped off the area while residents wait and wonder if this box is explosive.

police said around 5:30 p.m. a realtor sent a cleaning lady to cleaning up the house. that woman found the box covered in tape containing nails and wires. she called police. police brought out the bomb squad. now nare in the process of looking at the box and what's inside it. meanwhile, residents are concerned that the bomb squad is out here. >> that's kind of freaking me out. that really is. you don't really expect to see something like that in a small town. >> reporter: you're not surprise that police found a suspicious package in this townhouse? >> not at all. >> reporter: why not? >> the guy was very, very strange. he used on to stand out in the parking lot and kind of yell things, and he was a little interesting. >> reporter: that's right. other residents said the man would put skeletons on his lawn. they thought it was part of halloween. halloween ended and they were still up. many said this guy is a little weird. he's now in afghanistan. police plan on contacting him. meanwhile, they're investigating

the snow into parts of the area. that storm is out of sea. in behind it we see cold temperatures and see winds. winds gusting to 23 in leesburg and 33 miles per hour in washington and down towards packs river 23 miles per hour. look at the windchills associated with these winds. 26 at the airport, 31 towards fredericksburg. temperatures continue to go down. i'll let you know how cold things will get and how long mother nature can hold onto this winter weather. the death toll continues to rise from those tornadoes that tore through indiana, kentucky and tennessee on friday. four people -- 40 that is, 40 people now confirmed dead. the weather is not helping in the recovery. jim is here with more on that. >> thank you. survivors of the storms are trying to regain a sense of normalcy, but that's being complicated by several inches of wet, heavy snow. a big danger to already fragile

buildings there. they could come down under the weight. the soggy and cold conditions add to the dismal scene homeowners look over. this snow covered slap is where stephanie decker used to live. as the tornado approaches her home, she rushed her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter down into the basement. she used her body to shield the children as the home collapsed around them. the kids weren't hurt but decker lost both her legs. >> i prayed to have the strength to survive. i wanted these kids to have a mom, and that i did not want them to grow up without me. >> how strong she is, and, you know, i knew before but people talk about all the time, the sacrifice of a mother. mothers will do anything for their kids, but she did. >> residents and cleanup crews tonight face another hurdle. there's concern about looters and scam artists now it trying

to exploit the destruction. they had to set up checkpoints to prevent tornado tourists. people who weren't affected but want to look at all the devastation. jim and wendy. > to stafford county where someone spray painted the church. the pastor discovered it when he arrived to prepare for sunday services. >> it's sad to know that you got people close to the church that would do something like that. it makes you think nothing on the property is safe. >> tonight police are still looking for those vandals. a campaign worker for a d.c. council candidate has been charged with second-degree murder. it apparently started with an argument over dog waste. they say colbert stabbed robert wright to death because wright's dog did his business on his lawn. colbert is a campaign volunteer

for kevin shavis. we expect opening statements to start about the mat shooting at virginia tech. the families are suing the school. they say university officialed botched the response. a jury of seven should be seated sometime tomorrow. this trial could go into next week. tonight it's not just advertisers who are distancing themselves from rush limbaugh. after his controversial comments about a georgetown law student. angie goff here now with that story. >> support for sandra fluke is widespread, and now fallout for rush limbaugh is growing such as strong. kpua a.m. in hawaii is the first station to dump his show from the line-up in the wake of his comments. the station said while it believes in free speech, it does not condone the personal attacks limbaugh made. he called fluke a prostitute and

slut several times on the air last week in response to her stance on birth insurance coverage. now one of the nation's largest veteran groups is pushing to get limb bush off the air waves. he they asked the american forces network to stop broadcasting the show. three female iraq war veterans drafted the statements that reads in part american forces radio should no longer give him a platform. our entire military depends on troops respecting each other, women and woman. there's simply can be no place on the military air waves for sentiments that would undermine that respect. there was an apology online and fluke said she wasn't buying on the view this morning. >> i don't think a statement like this saying his choice of words was not the best changes anything. >> as of tonight nine companies

to evacuate the library that's located on h street between 21st and 22nd streets. a lot of students said they weren't sure what was going on, but when they saw police officers walking in with rifles and armed and being told to leave, they knew something was going on. earlier tonight there was an alert sent out around 9:30 that a white male, possibly wearing glasses, wearing a fleece sweater and bald was running from the white house toward the gw campus. presumably that's what this incident is about in the library. a couple of students say it was quite startling as they were studying when they were told to evacuate. >> at first they had a guard at the elevators telling us not to leave and then they said to evacuate immediately. >> we were about to leave the library and two police officers walked in with heavy-duty

nice colors out there. temperatures are on the cool side and mentioned the snow. we saw snow down towards the south. around culpepper, this is a picture from janet furlong. a little snow there as a couple of birds look like they're fighting for food there. matt sent in a picture from front royal. most of the snow is farther south, we're talking about orange county in virginia that picked upwards of ten inches the snow. at the airport a trace of snow. at least we saw flakes p in the metro area. high temperature today 46 degrees and a low of 32. we were below average today and i think tonight is the coldest night we've seen in about three weeks. 35 degrees is the current temperature, but the wind still gusts upwards of 33 miles per hour. the windchill in the low 20s right now. a very cold night. you need the coats out there. 35 right now in fredericksburg and annapolis at 37 degrees. as far as the temperatures

around the region, here's what's happening. there's our storm system and the snow showers earlier. now it's the colder air filtering in here. no rain or snow to talk about at this hour. we went see any in the next 24 to 48 hours. we mentioned 46 here in the district, about the only 42 in richmond with the snow down there. 30 for a high today in pittsburgh, and that colder air is going to stick around, at least the mid-atlantic over the next 24 hours. low pressure off the east continues to move to the he's. still chilly but with high pressure we see plenty of sunshine. temperatures stay in the 40s, but it's not going to be all that bad. cold to start, but by this aench you need the jackets instead of the coats. by wednesday the high pressure moves to the east and that means a return flow and for us nice and warm. back into the 60s as temperatures go back. cold, 22 to 29 degrees.

winds out of the northwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. tomorrow we see high temperatures around 49 degrees at the airplane. most areas in the mid-40s tomorrow after a low this morning of 29 tomorrow morning rather. 63 on the wednesday. i think some areas hit 70 on thursday, going for 68 at the airport, the same areas that saw snow today, 70 degrees at least for you folks. friday a temperature of 59 degrees with shower activity out there. it will be rain. we cool off for the weekend but that's relative. high temperature on saturday is 51 degrees with sunshine. that's not too bad at all for the beginning of march. it looks like most temperatures stay above average. coming up in sports. all this talk about ♪

we continue to follow the breaking news at gw university. an alert going out to students about 9:30 tonight after the secret service reported a gunman running away from the white house toward the campus. just before 11:00 tonight d.c. police and secret service agents converged on the library at gw with guns drawn. they are still searching that
