news, this time it's in the district. right now, hazmat crews on pennsylvania avenue, we first told you about this situation about 30 minutes ago. there is a report a suspicious powder found inside the restaurant. no one has been hurt. a suspicious white powder was also found at a restaurant on f street. >> resident also cross the south and midwest continue to sift through the debris following that deadly string of tornados. a total of 46 tornados tucking down in five states. among the survivors is stephanie decker. she's credited with saving her children, holding on to them while the storm tore through her house. despite being paralyzed by the storm, decker's spirits remain high. >> i'm blessed that i have my children today. if i have to live without legs, get prosthetics, that's okay, can i do that. >> the death toll from friday's storms now reached 40. insurance claims could top $2 billion.

>> let's take a look at our weather here. it's a beautiful day. temperatures are a little cooler than normal for the second day in a row. >> this is only the fifth day that we have seen temperatures below average since the first of february. that is amazing, and don't get used to it, we're going to go right back above average during the day tomorrow. take a look outside today. bright blue skies, incredible how much sunshine we'll see. winds out of the south at 14 miles an hour. the wind will make it feel a little cooler, it's that southerly component to the wind we're finally in that will help things warm up a little bit. fredericksburg around 51 degrees, to the north, up around baltimore, only 44. look at packs river 44. it is cooler along the water. nothing to show you rain wise, we're going to be dry not only through the day today, but

through the day tomorrow, through the day on thursday. probably until friday, before we see a chance rain, it will be another chilly night. this is what you can expect when you wake up, temperatures in the low 30s for most of you, some of you getting into the 20s. i'll break it down for you coming up. when a school bus is stopped, drivers are not supposed to go around it, now you have more incentive to obey that law in montgomery county. the counsel approved a measure to install cameras on their school buses. those caught by the cameras are facing a maximum $250 fine. if the bus driver could identify you, that could come with a misdemeanor charge and the fine goes up to $1,000. counties have 90 days whether to fund phase two of the dulles rail project.

it would fund more than 11 miles of rail, all the way out to dulles international and beyond. more than a billion dollars was saved by eliminating an underground station at the airport among other cost saving measures. it's super tuesday. voters in 11 states, including virginia, allocating delegates for the republican presidential nomination. we're going to have more on virginia in a moment. first we want to check in with steve handlesman, he's in ohio, that's a battleground state, it's historically considered a must win for republican hopefuls. why is ohio still so important? >> reporter: it is true that newt gingrich is looking at a likely win if the polls are accurate in his home state georgia. most republicans around the country, most establishment republicans are inside the beltway. see this republican race is down to just mitt romney and rick

santorum. last week they dualed in michigan. this is another big battleground state where neither guy is from. santorum from neighboring pennsylvania, romney from michigan, since it's considered must win in the fall. this is the place where these two guys are going to go head to head. georgia's got more delegates at 76. ohio 63 many and tennessee's got a lot today. 56. there's going to be contention there as. unlike virginia, where only romney is considered a factor. the short answer is, this is where these guys go head to head, and it looks like the winner is going to have a lot of momentum coming out of super tuesday. >> will there be a winner? is the race going to be decided today on super tuesday? >> there could be a loser, wendy. if rick santorum wins nowhere, which is possible, he could get no wins today, he's going to be seen as the loser. if he loses in ohio but does

well elsewhere, he can continue, because a lot of these republican primaries today are not winner take all. everybody's going to get delegates, even ron paul today. if romney wins here in the state of ohio, and he wins as he could, five, six, seven other of these super tuesday 11 state kwon tests, he's going to be the big western. santorum could lose, romney could be the big winner on this election day. >> all right. we'll stay tuned. steve handlesman in ohio. thanks. now we head to fairfax county, where voters in virginia can only choose mitt romney or ron paul as steve just mentioned. julie carrie is in the oakton area. is anyone going to the polls today? >> it's been extremely quiet at the polls today. at this precinct just 180 of the 3900 registered voters cast their ballots as of 4:00. it's not indicative of a lack of interest. it's due to the fact that

virginia's ballot has two names on it, not 4. >> turnout was so light that five minutes or more could pass between voters at some polling places, because only two names, mitt romneys and ron pauls are on the virginia primary ballot. some republicans decided to stay home. the other two failed to gain enough ballot signatures to meet virginia's tough ballot access rule. >> was your choice on the ballot? >> not my first choice. second choice was, but not my first. >> reporter: how do you feel about casting a vote for your second choice? >> second choice. it's not what i would have wanted. >> reporter: this woman came to cast her ballot for mitt romney, while her husband decided to sit the primary out. >> well, my candidate is on the ballot, but my husband is a

once a woman hits age 43, her chance getting pregnant on her own is pretty slim. that leaves a lot of women looking for help from egg donors. the problem, it can cost thousands of dollars. and insurance doesn't usually pay for it. doreen gentzler reports on a new lower cost option that is helping women have children. >> i had a 2% chance of getting pregnant naturally with my own eggs. >> reporter: marina is 42 years old, she had just gotten married and they were ready to start a family. because her age, the doctors said she didn't have enough healthy eggs to conceive a child. >> i was surprised. >> reporter: doctors said her best option would be using a donor egg. that means she'd get a healthy egg from another woman, it would be fertilized with her husband's sperm and implanted.

we're talking naggals? >> yeah, they're looking really good down there in spring training. nationals first baseman is hoping that's the case after signing a two-year deal in 2011. his season was cut short by labrum surgery. this offseason, the nationals took a look at other first basemen. as for laroche, he's embracing the new opportunity this season presents. a year ago he was the guy who could make a difference. sure the nationals signed jayson werth to a 100 million dtz deal, but first baseman adam laroche was considered a linchpin in the nationals hopes of improvement. his play on the field confirmed the possibilities, but less than two months into the season, it

was over for laroche. he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. it was a tough pill to swallow for a player trying to make an impact on a new team. >> i think a big reason why is because i haven't been hurt in my career. i've been really lucky to go out and play a full season every year. and then to be shut down that early on a new team and sit there and watch games and not be able to do anything, it's -- i'd rather not do that again. >> in light of laroche's injury, the nationals web with the shopping for insurance during the offseason, making a pitch for all-star slugger prince fielder. in the end the big first baseman would sign with the detroit tigers. the manager makes no bones about it. fielder would have been an upgrade over laroche. >> how close are you to landing prince fielder?

it is super tuesday. voters in 11 states, including virginia are making their pick. a prince georges county council woman has been cited with reckless driving after she was clocked driving faster than 100 miles an hour on the beltway. she will be fined $500 and get six points on her license. she became a sensation because police initially only issued her a warning for that excessive speed. there's going to be cameras on school buses to catch drivers

who pass stopped school buses. fines could range between $250 and $1,000. now, let's fast forward to the weather. doug? >> temperatures are on the warm side, just not here. take a look at the eastern half of the nation right now, 47 in washington, 40 in new york city. look back to the west, st. louis at 72. chicago right now at 67 degrees. and that warmer air will make its way our way over the next 24 hours, a much nicer day. temperatures tomorrow could be 15 to 20 degrees warmer than where they are during the day today, we're not done just yet. we'll have the updated for cast for you coming up in a few minutes. an fbi raid that has shaken the city's political establishment. on friday, agents raided the home and offices of one of the city's most prominent businessmen. that raid is now looking into wrongdoing in the mayor's 2010 campaign. tom sherwood reports.

>> reporter: for nearly a year, the mayor has tried to stick to city businesslike this groundbreaking tuesday. even as a federal probe swirls around his 2010 campaign for mayor. there are allegations of possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars may have been improperly raised and spent. some of it through money orders to hide the source of the cash. on friday, federal agents raided the home and offices of jeffrey thompson. thompson has raised large sums of money for many candidates, including using money orders. thompson has declined comment on the raid. >> jeff thompson has been a successful businessman in the city, he's run a leading accounting firm in the city. he's been involved in health care. this is the situation that we'll watch unfold and see what's going on here fp. >> in his first real comment since the thompson raid.

major artery here at rush hour. this crash happened a short time ago on university boulevard and eisner street. we have heard of at least one person injuried. we will have much more on this developing story as it comes in to news 4. stay with us. the suspect in a drive by shooting that injured a sleeping child is now in jail. thomas baldwin turned himself in yesterday nearly six months after the shooting. baldwin shot into a house and the bullet struck an 11-year-old boy in the back while he slept. he was not seriously injured, however. baldwin is facing a laundry list of charges, including attempted murder. police in maryland are looking for a man they believe was trying to take pictures of a woman using the ladies room in a restaurant. it happened at a panera bread in glen burnie. a 19-year-old female employee says she was with using the restroom when an unknown male

entered it and held a cell phone camera under the stall she was using. the man fled the restaurant. an update on the breaking news from last night. a bomb squad found a suspicious device in franconia. a cleaning crew found a strange looking box with tape and wires. inside a vacant house up for sale. the previous homeowner had just moved to afghanistan. the lineup for the kennedy center's 42nd season is now out. the kennedy center released some of the new productions set to grace the stage. >> we're going to have great theater, war horse, the book mormon, anything goes, a play called the guards man. there's going to be a festival of in orderic culture, a full season by the washington national opera and the national symphony orchestra. there's modern dance, ballet, jazz, something for everybody at the kennedy center. >> a lot of big names. there's also one free performance a day on the

center's millennium stage at 6:00, no ticket for that is needed. religious leaders want a fortune 500s ceo fired for his alleged role in the foreclosure crisis in prince william county 37 a group of religious and civic organizations marched to the offices of general electric this afternoon, general electric was the worst lender in the prince williams area during the sub prime lending spree. they're asking for jeff immelt to be fired for his alleged role. ge is part owner of nbc 4. a change could soon be coming to the heart of herndon, the fire station on spring street. may be torn down, and a new station rebuilt on the same site. at 62 years old, it is the oldest station in the county and cannot accommodate some of the larger new trucks. fire service would be relocated nearby the destruction. a similar project has just been completed in great falls.

we have more break news right now in the murder an elderly woman in georgetown today. a grand jury indicted the suspect. viola was found beaten and strangled inside her home. muth was charged with her death, today's indictment also sites the violent nature of her death, and the fact that her old age made her particularly vulnerable as aggravating circumstances in the case. if convicted, muth could face life in prison with no chance of parole. he'll be back in court next week. we're learning more about what caused the deaths of three family members in calvert county. the two adult symptoms tested

positive for influenza a and developed sepsis. their mother came down with flu like symptoms in maryland. as melissa mala ireports, three of her children went to care for her, they got sick as well. >> reporter: health department officials spent part of tuesday conducting a searries of tests inside this home now. any samples will be sent to the cdc. 81-year-old ruth blake lived in this home in southern calvert county for decades. on february 23rd, she got sick with a respiratory illness that turned into pneumonia. she died in bed last week, but three of her children had been caring for her. two of them, a 58-year-old man and 56-year-old woman decide just days later, the third who lived with her mother is in critical condition. the neighbor -- >> that is very frightening, something like this, something serious like this is in the neighborhood and nobody knows

about it. >> reporter: ruth blake's son fred was brought here to calvert memorial hospital, then flown to med star washington hospital center with double pneumonia. he died monday just hours later his sister vanessa also passed away. another sibling, 51-year-old elaine was taken off a respirator yesterday and is breathing on her own. >> this is a very unusual event which is why it is newsworthy. >> calvert county health department head david rogers has been fielding calls from worried residents. >> i want to emphasize at this moment, it seems to be confined to this one close family situation. >> mary dennis says she's worried, she got a call from the school system warning anyone with a respiratory illness or flu-like symptoms to see a doctor. >> that's very scary. >> reporter: the samples from the home, blood and tissue and ined views with other family members will help investigators determine what was strong enough to kill a mother and two of her

let's get another update on our forecast. we had a beautiful day. very crisp. >> something very nice wendy. a lot of people enjoying this winter so far because it's been so warm. and it looks like those warm temperatures are coming back. this is the reason why. you don't notice a lot on this satellite and radar. one thing you will notice, see these cloud here making their way to the north and east? that is a warm front. it will start to usher in some warmer temperatures. out there right now, look at the sun trying to make its way down hinhood some of those clouds coming down. winds out of the south, the southerly direction is normally a warm direction for us, that's what it's going to be over the next couple days. south at 14, it makes things even a little cooler. 45 at gaithersburg right now, around resten, 47. herndon, down through ft. bellvar, 43. silver spring coming in right now at 48 degrees.

tomorrow morning still on the cold side. 25 in culpepper, going for a low in washington of about 34. when the sun comes out, the southerly windses kick in, and so do the warm temperatures, getting up to 64 in washington, near 70 to the south. 66 in culpepper, 66 in fredericksburg, even hagerstown getting above the 60 degree mark, we get warmer during the day on thursday. most of you south of us should hit that 70 degree plateau. 69 on thursday, 58 on friday, with a chance for shower activity. not a lot of rain. saturday right now, looking like a temperature of 50 degrees. looks like we get back above average as we make our way into early next week with a high of 65 on monday. do you feel safe on metro? new data shows which metro stations log the most crime in 2011 and which ones stay trouble free. what's being done to keep riders safe. >> reporter: every year there's a new station in and out of the

top ten list for high crime areas in metro. this year, deanpwood with made number one. if you don't live in deanwood or know someone who does, chances are you've never stopped at this station on the orange line. according to metro's 2011 crime report, this little station ranked number one for part one crime, that's aggravated assaults, burglaries, larceny and motor vehicle thefts. >> that's crazy. nobody wants to feel unsafe. >> reporter: crime on the rails is still high in comparison to a few years ago. but crime on parking lots and buses are experiencing a five-year low. >> every two weeks we analyze it, look for trends and we adjust our resources according to those trends. you're going to see movement in that top ten list constantly. >> this is how the year ended. there was crime in every area of

an unusual story now out of florida about a millionaire there who adopted his girlfriend. john goodman is going on trial in a dui manslaughter case. he did the adoption to protect his fortune, in case he loses the case. he pleaded not guilty and today jury selection has begun. kerry sanders has the story. >> john goodman's sedan. a high end bentley allegedly ran

the stop sign and t-boned scott wilson. pushing wilson's car across the intersection and flipping upside down into the canal. in the early morning darkness as wilson's hyundai sank into the water two years ago, goodman is accuses of stumbling from the scene. phoning friends, a lawyer and then 54 minutes later, finally dialling 911. >> yes, i just got in a wreck, and my phone was dead and i'm -- where am i? >> in that 7:50 call to 911. >> is everybody okay or what happened? >> goodman asks the same question three times? >> is everybody okay? >> i'm not sure, sir. >> it's a powerful piece of evidence for prosecutors, because the victim in the car did not die in the accident. the medical examiner says scott wilson drowned. >> he was the most amazing person you could ever meet. >> i would like to know if there

was any possibility that he could have jumped in and got him out. that's what i'm questioning in my heart. >> hours later at the hospital. detectives took these pictures of goodman, grinning, a nurse had just drawn fluids, his blood alcohol level 1.7. more than twice the legal limit. goodman, whose family sold their air conditioning business could be forced to pay civil damages in a lawsuit filed by the victim's family. a penalty that might threaten his family fortune. a majority of that money is currently locked up in a trust fund for his two biological children. he recently engineered protection for his remaining fortune. goodman legally adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend, which gave her immediate access to an estimated $100 million. his two teenaged children have now filed to clock that adoption. and the transfer of wealth.
